Lion’s Den Will Be Chinatown’s First New Nightclub and Live Music Venue in Decades | Eater SF

"In the 1940s the upstairs of the 57 Wentworth Place site was occupied by a restaurant called Kuh Wah, whose patrons would walk downstairs to access the basement ‘cave-like nightclub’ that was the original Lion’s Den." - Luke Tsai

Have had this place once or twice but this will be the last time. Got the chefs special chow mein and it was a gelatinous mess. Inedible. The fried rice was fine but the chow mein was so bad we wasted over $20.

Absolutely amazing! Fastest service in a Chinese restaurant I've ever had. We ordered and had our food within 15 minutes. Amazing personal service when I asked for a change in what my meal came with as they made my meal first, then my significant others meal. The starter soup is also amazing. I ate it all which is very rare for me to do. The sweet and sour sauce is to die for! I've never had better in another restaurant. My favorite Chinese dish of all is almond fried chicken. I was impressed with how good their dish was. It's a very authentic Chinese restaurant and I'm grateful my significant other suggested it. 💓 We will be back next time we are in town visiting! Thank you for the amazing service!

The mandarin orange chicken is really good. The wanton soup was pretty flavorless, and the almond chicken was alright, but could have used more sauce and peanut topping and less lettuce under it .. preferably none. The fried rice is dry and also without much flavor. It is nice that they include tea with the meal. You'll just have to ask at least three times for it, if you can catch a waiter. We had to chase one down a few times as it appeared they forgot we were there. The inside of the restaurant is beautiful, but extremely quiet. An uncomfortable silence that leaves you very aware of the sound of your own chewing.

OMG! My first time at this place and it reminded me of back home in Virginia! I loved the pork fried rice! And of course everything else my hubby suggested. I just wouldn't want to order from anywhere else now. Wonderful, friendly staff! Very accommodating! I just love this place. And it's right up the road!

We ordered the chow me in. Didn't look like chow mein. Mushy beansprouts cabbage celery? Your option is hard noodles or soft noodles. I was not told that when I ordered so I ended up with the hard noodles. The hard noodles have come in a bag and I have always been given those with sweet and sour sauce as an appetizer at restaurants. I didn't know because I have never seen chow mein like that. She talked to me like I was dumb and I should have known that is what it looks like. Even the chow mein in the restaurants in Chinatown look the way I expect. Picture 1) mushy veggies 2) hard "noodles"? 3) "chow mein" with soft noodles. 4) what chow mein has looked like my entire life Update: I did some research and they have traditional chow mein. Which is fine, but you should let people know that. She could have said "we do it this traditional way". I would have been on my way with no complaints.

Been going here over 50 yrs. Not the best in this "genre" of old school Cantonese quisine but, one of the few left that knows haw to make boneless almond fried chicken. It was 5 star back in the day.
