Lion’s Den Will Be Chinatown’s First New Nightclub and Live Music Venue in Decades | Eater SF

"In the 1940s the upstairs of the 57 Wentworth Place site was occupied by a restaurant called Kuh Wah, whose patrons would walk downstairs to access the basement ‘cave-like nightclub’ that was the original Lion’s Den." - Luke Tsai

My boyfriend and I went there early fir new years eve dinner. We like to sit in the bar. So pleasant and Charlotte our server was very friendly. We shared a combination dinner . Very good food. I noticed our bill seemed higher for combination dinner and plus a nice gentleman had bought my partner and I a drink. I.asked Charlotte about it and instantly her demeanor changed from pleasant to Confrontational. She rolled her eyes at me and she seemed insulted because I had asked about extra charges. Which by the way she had not explained when we ordered. I feel sorry if that is how she chooses to Go through life but from now on if we go to wa kues and she is waitressing we will not go in.

First time eating here. We had the meal B on the back of the menu. I had the almond chicken and my husband had the broccoli beef. If I could have given the food a 0 star I would have. My almond chicken came like flattened out in two thin long strips with batter and covered in a sauce. I have never seen it prepared this way before. I am uses to small chunks of chicken, nuts, and vegetables. I tried the sauce, I cannot describe the taste but I did not like it. Same thing when I tried it no breading or sauce. I honestly could only choke back the one bite of each. The fried rice that came on the plate was so dry it and had a hard time eating that as well. My husband liked the broccoli that came in his beef, but honestly had to run to the bathroom twice because the food made him sick. He did like the noodle soup and the wontons though. At the end we just asked them to package up the rest. We felt bad we really didn't like it, but with our bill being $72, maybe we can find a homeless person to give it to, who knows, they might like it...but it definitely was not for us. Staff was nice though.

I've been coming to Wah Kue for 50 years, I quit when new owners took over, food was bad. But these new owners have the food back to the way it used to be. Love the chow main and everything else. Missed this for a long time, glad they restored it.

Google
Authentic Chinese food ! Very flavorful, serving size is perfect , felt like it was way more than enough. I don’t live in this State but one thing for sure , whenever work brings me back here i definitely have a go to food spot :)

Google
Have had this place once or twice but this will be the last time. Got the chefs special chow mein and it was a gelatinous mess. Inedible. The fried rice was fine but the chow mein was so bad we wasted over $20.

Jojo H.

Google
The mandarin orange chicken is really good. The wanton soup was pretty flavorless, and the almond chicken was alright, but could have used more sauce and peanut topping and less lettuce under it .. preferably none. The fried rice is dry and also without much flavor. It is nice that they include tea with the meal. You'll just have to ask at least three times for it, if you can catch a waiter. We had to chase one down a few times as it appeared they forgot we were there. The inside of the restaurant is beautiful, but extremely quiet. An uncomfortable silence that leaves you very aware of the sound of your own chewing.

Google
Had reservations for 4pm. Didn't get drinks for an hour. Ordered food and waited another hour. Completely under staffed for Christmas. Absolutely ridiculous

Google
OMG! My first time at this place and it reminded me of back home in Virginia! I loved the pork fried rice! And of course everything else my hubby suggested. I just wouldn't want to order from anywhere else now. Wonderful, friendly staff! Very accommodating! I just love this place. And it's right up the road!

Yelp
The young gentleman that took my order was great and provided good service. I ordered three entrees for dinner this evening and let's just say that all the food is bland. A little salt and seasoning (sesame oil, soy sauce, or chicken bouillon) would go far. Fast Chinese from Panda is better, so I hope that you can adjust your recipes and improve. I really want to continue supporting local, small businesses.

Yelp
S.O. raved about this place. He started going here many years ago and liked their food. From the outside, it looks unassuming and your typical mom-and-pop place. We were seated right away. It wasn't very busy but it was rather late in the day. We ordered BBQ pork, almond chicken, pork fried rice. The food came out timely and the portions were okay. BF liked their chow mein underneath but there wasn't enough noodles. The owners were nice and made sure our waters were filled. It was a nice meal but BF did say that it wasn't the same but decent. It's good if you have a hankering for some quick Chinese American food from a local joint.

Yelp
Place is smelly and food was very bland we ordered 4 entrées three of them were OK the chicken with broccoli was terrible no flavor terrible taste and when we tried to return it, the lady had the audacity to say we ate most of it and we didn't even touch it. The waiter Aiden was very nice and assisting us. Won't be returning ever !

Yelp
Wah Kue is the best Chinese food restaurant in Burien. The food was good and portions were ample also. Typical ambience and the service was great too. Well priced in this crazy expensive time's we are in right now.

Jeff S.

Yelp
It's not Delmonico's..... it's just old school Cantonese.... Just like the Chinese restaurants I remember as a kid growing up in this area..... new luck toy etc... what I do miss is the Hong Kong cafe that closed down years ago in Seattles Chinatown.... So many memories

Yelp
Unless you have kids w/ you, try dining in the bar: faster, efficient service + great drinks. Everything here screams old school &: subtly quaint. The food here is a big step above pedestrian. Don't miss any opportunity to check out this hidden gem !!!

Alan P.

Yelp
Twice I have ordered through Uber eats and after 3 drivers each time stopped to get my order and it was not ready, after an hour my order was cancelled. I don't have a problem with them focusing on customers at the restaurant, but then they should not be accepting orders they won't fill. This place used to be very good, now they wont even take my business.

Yelp
Food sweet and sour spare ribs egg foo young pork chow mein excellent!!! People people customer service traditions!! I'm originally from Yakima and the Golden wheel restaurant in Yakima serves the food the same way the same taste always the best thank you

Lisa G.

Yelp
Bought #3 combo plate as take out . The young man who packed it and checked me out was so very kind and considerate . The pork chow mein , fried rice , egg rolls , almond chicken and sweet and sour spareribs were all delicious and well packed . He put the almond fried chicken sauce in a separate box which was perfect . The bbq pork was extremely fresh and big , delicious pieces . I have been coming here for over 35 years and today's meal was sheer perfection !

Yelp
This is the worse and overpriced Chinese food ive have ever had,the chow mien was like a hot slimey salad with grey boiled pork, the Almond fried chicken was pretty much just breading and the gravy had no taste at all? The fried rice was dry and had no flavor. They have junk stacked on the wall and in a booth looks like a dump and their food rating was not great, will not ever be back
google avatar

Yelp
It's your average Chinese food! The bad reviews on here seem really dramatic- its a Chinese dive bar that smells like smoke and has the decor and ambiance to match it. While nothing I had was outstanding, everything I had was as expected given the ambiance, shortness of staff, and time of day (late evening on a holiday). I kept it simple with General Tso's, Orange Chicken, hot and sour soup (was really good), veggie chow mein, crab rangoon, and green tea. I will say that the veggie chow mein had a LOT of vegetables in it and minimal noodle so if that ratio could be bumped a little I would like it :) Not bad but not horrible and yes I would go here again.

Yelp
Haven't been here in a couple of years, but read some good reviews so I thought I'd give them another chance. The food was fresh and presented good. But that's it,we ordered a Family Dinner and it was BAD, absolutely no flavor in anything and that's not an exaggeration!! Everything thing was bland even the Hot and Sour Soup it tasted like water with white pepper and food coloring. The sweet and sour Pork was horrible and tasteless the sauce was like Water thickened with Cornstarch and way too much Caramel food coloring it was BLACK!! Almond Fried Chicken same thing no taste in the Batter. Same with the Chow Mein and fried Rice. My Water had more flavor than my dishes, they need to learn Mandarin and Cantonese flavors, this is no longer a Great place for American Style Chinese food. Wasted my $53.00 don't waste your's. Also be careful with the sweet and sour Pork you can easily choke on it.

Wis.D T.

Yelp
i dont recommend this, i just ordered sweet and sour spare ribs the meat taste not fresh and the smell is not good and the chicken chow mein is so bland.

Yelp
Service good and friendly. Restaurant is clean. Food is awful and expensive. Unfortunately Mardarin Kitchen in Des Moines, which is our go-to is closed for a week or so, so we came here instead because I had heard good things. I am hugely disappointed and want my money back! Hot and sour soup has no flavor and way too much cornstarch making it a gelatinous tub of paste. Kung pao chicken has no zucchini or even water chestnuts but instead a ton of cheap celery. Oh and maybe 1/2 a large chicken breast in total for meat. House fried rice is adequate, but not terrific. Egg rolls meh. Don't recommend.

Yelp
Just went back, really improved the food & service, large portions for the price these days.Highly recommend.

Yelp
Food was delicious and the staff were very friendly! Some of the best Chinese food I've had in the area! Highly recommend! 10/10 will be going back again!

Yelp
Very admirable to have Employees that been there for 30 years! Meet nice people every time I visit. Good American Chinese food too.

Yelp
This food at Waukee is the best! The fried rice is so good. The sweet and sour has no match to any restaurant in the area. Everything is great!!

Yelp
I really wanted to love the food here. The service was delightful and expedient, but the meal? Not so much. Happened to be in the Burien area and needed to pick-up a late dinner. Chinese food was on my mind, and after a brief Yelp search, we quickly ordered from Wag Kue in the last hour of business. I was in the mood for something loaded, greasy, and full of carbs. When browsing their online menu via GrubHub, the Special Chow Mein caught my eye. Shrimp, chicken & BBQ pork with veggies and fried noodles was sure to hit the spot. We even pulled over to get dinner started before making it home - that's how hungry I was All of the meat seemed boiled, not fried, causing a rubbery texture. Chewing on meat soaked in some kind of liquid isn't what I pictured when ordering chow mein. I do appreciate the ample amount of toppings but it was difficult to sift through to find the actual noodles. Once located, they were soft, some burnt, off putting how unevenly cooked they were. I hope this helps the next person seeking good Chinese takeout. Wish I hadn't have rushed my dinner decision and took the time to read through the reviews

Anthony J.

Yelp
Probably the most flavor less over cooked chinese food I've ever had. The Salt and pepper chicken wing appetizer was oddly sweet for the amount of seasoning it did not have. Also some of the fried chicken was so cooked it was rock hard. The Kung Pow Chicken was like chewing on a piece of rubber and tatsteless except for the peanuts, it also was not spicy. The broccoli and beef again lacked flavor and the beef itself tasted like beef an the verge of spoiling. The beef chow mein was again very tasteless. The Mandarin Chicken was okay.
google avatar

Blake C.

Yelp
Disappointed. Wah Kue has been mediocre for years but it's reached a new low. The chicken noodle soup tasted like noodles in dishwater, awful. I sent it back. The beef fried rice and boneless almond fried chicken were okay, nothing like years past when it was pretty good. Expensive. Three dishes + drinks $144. I've been going here since I was a kid yet I may not go back.
google avatar

Trudy B.

Yelp
This is so difficult because the staff are SO lovely and kind. Unfortunately the food is awful. Right down to the fried rice which is hard to mess up. The almond fried chicken was tough as shoe leather, the same goes for the sweet and sour pork. It's been around forever, I grew up going here but sadly it's just no good. I would give it 1 star if the staff weren't so great.
google avatar

Percette C.

Yelp
Hadn't been in ages, but was craving some chicken subgum. It was delicious even if they forgot to give me any of the crispy noodles to go with it.

Julie H.

Yelp
Our usual place was closed and my husband craving hot & sour soup. Placed a pick up order and I tipped over 20% because while I waited they were very nice and place was clean and cute. Food was not great and soup was horrible! It was thick and gelatin like abd had weird sweet flavor. Inedible really if you like hot and sour soup. Sad because we like to support local and I originally thought this might be out new place. $80 later, won't ever go back!

Yelp
Ambiance is classic retro Chinese. The staff is wonderful. The food is a little overpriced, but the portions are good. Nothing was outstanding. Ordered pork noodles, got chicken, said nothing, no big deal. Super dry. Sweet & Sour chicken, tasty sauce but dry chicken. Mixed veggies nice. Almond fried boneless chicken, usually my favorite and sooo tasty was dry and so overcooked and tough on the edges, we cut off a ton of meat. Nothing was super hot when it arrived and we were 1 of 3 tables. Disappointing.

Yelp
This place has been around for decades. It was about 15 years ago (possibly a little more) since I have ate at Wah Kue's. And it was literally the one time. So this is the first time I had their food since the new management. The service was very good. That I would 5 stars for. The 2 people working were pleasant and attentive. The man that helped me offered if I would like tea while I wait and of course I said yes. I figured he would bring a teapot so I turned over a teq cup. Nope he brought me a bug cup of tea and it was the perfect amount. I ordered to-go was Special Chow Mein, Boneless Almond Fried Chicken and an order of egg rolls. Total cane to $45.60 after tax. The of what I ordered was the Boneless Almond Fried Chicken. Chicken was crispy and although a thinner cut it wasn't dry and the gravy/sauce was good. It had good, smooth texture. As for the Chow Mein... it was mediocre. Not horrible and will work in a craving pinch. But I like Happy Garden's Special Chow Mein better. It has better flavor & has beef, chicken, prawns and pork. The main disappointment with the chow mein here was the portion in comparison to the price. Not worth $14.75 in my opinion, especially with it how it tastes. Hands down the biggest disappointment of everything was the egg rolls. Quite frankly my main curiosity. I seen a few pictures of egg rolls on Yelp but they were from years ago and quite obviously before the new management. Because those photos showed a thick and very full egg roll. What I got for $10.95 was 6 tiny egg rolls and they weren't tasty at all. There was hardly any egg if not none at all. Really reminded of what you but frozen in the store. I will never order these again. Oh how I miss the original New Luck Toy that was in West Seattle Junction (not the new bar in it's tribute).

James M.

Yelp
If Wah Kue would only return original Egg Rolls, prawns with lobster sauce and of course original Almond Fried Chicken. Ambience inside is still original and kept up very clean.

Jeanie F.

Yelp
Went into WahKue tonight to have a casual birthday dinner and ran into a buzz saw. She started accusing one of us as some crazy sexual harassment comments right away. She said " I don't want any crap. I just want to serve you and that's it." She continued all the way to our table. She asked "what groups we were affiliated with." We said we had no idea what she was talking about and she said "you know what you did." We had no idea what she was talking about or referring to. I was so offended that I asked for the owner. I said they need a to fire her for her behavior. It was completely un acceptable. Sh must have been having withdrawals or something. We have been going to WahKue for at least 30 years but we will never ever b going back to WahKue after this terrible experience.
google avatar

Shay M.

Yelp
Sadly, since the new owners took over years ago, the food just is nothing like what it was. I gave it three tries since the new management took over in hopes it was just a fluke, and every time was a very expensive disappointment. The fried rice is bland, the once-huge flavorful egg rolls are now basically frozen spring rolls, and I don't know how you mess up almond chicken and BBQ pork, but...well there you have it. We ate a light portion of each and threw the rest in the trash. What a waste. I will not be returning ever again and it makes me heartsick. It was my favorite Chinese restaurant for almost 40 years. I live over an hour away and would still drive over sometimes to eat there, and recommended it to all my friends. No more. RIP Wah Kue that was...

Yelp
I'm loving the character of this place. I was transported when I walked in. Stuffed sailfish on the shiny gold-patterned wallpaper gave me the vibe that this was old school Chinese. Big, comfy booths in one room, tables in the middle with and a bar with side tables to eat in the third. They are definitely working a retro thing here and the food follows suit. Generous portions and old favorites like egg foo young make you feel like you're in the '70's. I've been a couple times and have also gotten some take out. The family style dinner combos are the best way to go for your first experience here as you'll be able to try a few dishes for a great price. My sweet and sour pork was a very generous helping. The sauce was not that orange stuff we've come to expect from Chinese restaurants but more of a brown sweet and sour. I've seen this type of sauce called "duck sauce" in other Chinese places and think this might be the same here. I like this better as there are more layers of flavor. The pork was cooked perfect, too. Succulent and tender chunks which were lightly battered and fried. These were so perfect, in fact, that my leftovers the next day were not greasy and held up well in the microwave. The house fried rice was not quite what I was hoping for. I was looking for more peas, carrots or green onions for color, flavor and texture and just a tiny bit more of the leftover proteins which make up a house fried rice would have been nice. But I still enjoyed it as the soy and other flavors were all well balanced and it was also not greasy. The place is clean, warm and inviting. And even though there are TVs and music in the background the place is quiet enough to have a conversation. The bathrooms were spotless and fresh smelling and they were well stocked. Table-side service was flawless and hospitable. Even when I'm waiting for a to-go order I'm offered water. That's a small detail for some but I think it shows that the staff want you to feel welcomed, even if its just for a little bit. I'm a fan of Wah Kue and I'll be back. I see other reviews are really trashing the place and the new owners. I hope people give it an honest chance and not give it a bad reviews because it's not the like what it was. Things change a little after 60 years. It's a perfect place to have a med-sized gathering of friends for a birthday, wedding dinner, etc. Will update again when I've had a few more experiences and, hopefully, can give them 5 stars.

Yelp
I have been eating at Wah Kuh since I was a child. Their food used to be absolutely AMAZING! Their egg rolls were as big as a burrito, stuffed with contents similar to chow main. Their sweet & sour was great! Not like the sugared vinegar you get now. I still eat there because other places I've dinned at are even worse. But I really miss the old Wah Kuh's. Plus every time I eat there, I can guarantee getting the Wah Kuh blues. Guess I'm a bit of a sadist...
google avatar

Lisa J.

Yelp
I have been eating here for years. The last few times we have ordered fried rice it has been terrible. I don't know what is going on at this restaurant but the food has gone way downhill. Also, there is no egg in the fried rice anymore and it is salty and gross. Time to find a new Chinese food! The two stars is for the staff, they are very nice.

Tracy M.

Yelp
I have been eating at Wah-Kue's since I was a little girl - over 69 years. Loved the food! However went there yesterday and the egg foo young was terrible. The gravy was changed and it was a thick orange sauce. Not a light chicken broth, sherry and soy sauce. Every thing else chow mein, pork fried rice and sweet and sour chicken was fantastic. Was disappointed in the egg foo young as it is one of my favorites.

Yelp
Great service - Great Food - Old School American Chinese - if you are looking for fancy, not here. If you are looking for really good food and a great place ... Try It .
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
awesome food and service. best bartender ever! just enough Sass and great pours. Bar has huge TVs

Ewes S.

Yelp
For the love of god don't ever order their sweet and sour chicken. This is as absolutely awful I could almost cry...
google avatar

Jeff D.

Yelp
Check your order closely. We've been going to Wah Kue for about 20 years but was really disappointed tonight. Just picked up our Christmas Eve family meal for 4 and got home to find one whole entree missing. I understand it's Christmas Eve and they are very busy but it really puts a damper on things when your order is messed up.
google avatar

David E.

Yelp
Sometimes I have a craving for old school chinese food, the kind you would get before they created things like lettuce wraps. They still make the chow mein with bean sprouts instead of noodles. The quality of the food is very good and they pour one of the stiffest drinks at any restaurant. The place has been here forever and hope it always is. How can you not like the older lady and gentlemen that work the place? Anyone thinking they are creepy just cannot appreciate someplace as good as this.
google avatar

Cheryl A.

Yelp
Present owners changed a few recipes and not for the better. They offer subpar rice and the eggrolls, which used to be fluffy handfuls of joy, are no more. The only dishes my family will order now are Sub Gum and deep fried prawns. Mess those up too and we will be gone.
google avatar

Judy O.

Yelp
Such excellent food. We got seated and orders taken right way. I wanted some won ton soup but not a whole order and they gladly let me order a half size ... it was excellent tasting and in fact all food was absolutely delicious ! The staff was friendly and attentive ... can't wait to go again.

James W.

Yelp
The atmosphere and service was good. The food was not. We were served the same exact sauce for three different dishes. Sorry but definitely not on my list for a next time....
google avatar

Mary O.

Yelp
ordered chicken chow mein and server brought out pork chow mein. I told him I ordered chicken and he said, "it's ok"...then proceeded to pick out the pork with his hand on the table!I will never go back.

Kodak C.

Yelp
Great food and great service. Judy was fantastic and the environment was so friendly. My soup was so amazing I ordered the won ton soup and it was amazing thank you
google avatar

James W.

Yelp
I just got it to go order from this place and it is complete garbage they charged me $52.80 for something that I can get at Panda Express for $14 the rice is hard and the meat is deep-fried and garbage when the owners left they ruined the whole business

Roger L.

Yelp
Very very poor their food was tasteless compared to a few years ago.costs up almost double food quality down
google avatar

Clarisse R.

Yelp
Here with my inSO for late lunch early dinner on a lazy Sunday afternoon. 1 combo meal is enough for 2 people. Plus an order of egg foo young. Well whiskey soda is $4.50 and heard they are well poured.
google avatar

Michael P.

Yelp
Wah Kue was good 20 years ago. My late mother in law loved this place. Today we were celebrating her birthday and spent over $100 on THE WORST Chinese food I've ever had! Frozen egg rolls, bland and dry chicken, etc etc. Our family had fond memories of Wah Kue but times change and I will never eat there again. SAD
google avatar

Heather M.

Yelp
To start off I was very scared to come here. I hadn't been in forever and wasn't sure of the new owners. This is legit old school American Chinese food. Everyone that works here will go above and beyond to make you happy. I ordered egg foo young with shrimp and fried rice with no meat which they made fresh for me. I'm not uber crazy about this style of Chinese but if I ever go back I know I'll be happy.

Yelp
Have been coming here with my family for years, Tim goes above and beyond every visit and the food is great as well!
