4 Best Day Trips from Houston

"Hearing the soothing trickle of the San Marcos River, seeing the blaze of individual fire pits, and looking up at the starry sky miles from anywhere is immediately soothing when you arrive at this luxe camping resort. It's named for the plentiful fireflies all over in the native tongue of the Tonkawa tribe that once inhabited the land here. Despite the escapist surroundings though, tents are full of amenities: indoor and outdoor showers and tub, a king-size beds and (thankfully for Texas in the summer) air conditioning." - Diana Oates

Wahwahtaysee Resort

"Describe your first impression when you arrived?Pulling up at sunset, my senses are ablaze. Hearing the soothing trickle of the San Marcos River, seeing the wild blaze of the individual fire pits. Stars have begun to speckle the sky, and so have the magical fireflies for which the property is named. What's the backstory? The resort is owned by a local Austin family—Robert Dillard and his sons Sammy and Donny. Not long after purchasing it, the family looked into the land’s history and learned that it was formerly inhabited by the Tonkawa tribe. The first time the Dillards camped together, fireflies were noticeably flickering at dusk leading them to the the name WahWahtaysee which translates to firefly in the original tribe’s native tongue. Tell us all about your accommodations. The Little Dipper is a 650 square foot luxury tent that features a king sized bed and a queen sleeper sofa. There is both an indoor and outdoor shower in addition to an indoor tub. There is a toilet and air conditioning which I normally would not point out but #glamping. There is also a golf cart for each tent. The linens are very comfortable and there are Aveda toiletries. If I were to return, I would rent one of the new two bedroom tents that opened in August 2020 so that my kids could have their own room. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi?There is currently no Wi-Fi, so get ready to unplug. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at?There is no restaurant here, however, you can have a breakfast platter delivered to your tent. The choices are a migas or pancake plates. You can also arrange to have a “Yeti meal” that is waiting for you when you arrive, stocked with all of the necessities needed to have either a burger or steak dinner. Last but certainly not least, you can order a s’mores board to compliment your private fire pit party. These options are not included in the nightly rate. And the service? The service was great, however, the beauty of this property is that it feels like you are alone. Wahwahtaysee Resort is self check-in, giving you only a welcome email with detailed instructions for arrival and check-out. Staff can arrange other activities though: meals, yoga, fly-fishing, or kayaking. What type of travelers will you find here?People are unplugged, casually dressed, and looking to relax while enjoying the gift of nature. What about the area? What else is around? The property is located on 100 acres with extensive river frontage. The property is isolated in the very best way. Any other hotel features worth noting? All rooms come with a coffee machine and coffee, a Little Green Egg for cooking, and a golf cart for getting around the resort. Bottom line: Worth it? Why?This property is absolutely worth it because of its ability to force you to unplug, unwind and connect with nature. The gorgeous land along the San Marcos river reminds Texans (as if they could ever forget) why their state is so special and inspires out-of-towners to consider the Texas Hill Country for both long term and short term vacationing." - Diana Oates

From the moment we arrived, the staff was amazing and accommodating. The grounds are so beautiful and the golf cart rides through the property were so peaceful. The cabin was so nice and so happy to have a place to cool down. The pool is great, salt water is definitely the way to go! We ordered breakfast to be delivered to us and the staff was so prompt and even gave us some coffee with our order. My two sons had a blast and didn't even want to leave. Definitely a place we'll be going back to.

Very cool, no frills, glamping spot next to San Marcos River. We stayed in the “Santuary” tent which is a perfect getaway for a couple. Golf cart was provided for easy and quick access to the whole property. There is a bar at the pool but no restaurant on the property. If you don’t bring your own provisions, you need to order food 24 hours in advance. We had a great time. One of the property managers, Mark, was very attentive. Definitely recommend.

This was my 2nd trip here and it once again enjoyed our time. Super luxury tents and beautiful grounds. We enjoyed floating the river and then hitting the pool for a refreshing swim. The pool was a nice touch though I do wish they would have let us BYOB and charge a corkage fee instead. I am super picky and would have gladly paid a fee for the day to bring in my own drinks. Other then that we really enjoyed our selves.

This is our favorite getaway spot ever! We’ve stayed here twice now and absolutely love it. The resort is quiet and peaceful. The commute is easy which makes getting here stress free. Everything about this place keeps us coming back.

The whole experience was awesome. My husband and I went with our 3 kiddos and really enjoyed the food and s'more's board (made sure we ordered 2 days ahead) pool with hot tub, the golf cart, trails, beach river entrees, bunnies, armadillos, deer, dragon flies, fireflies, birds and butterflies. Even Buster the raccoon. Big fella. Just everything. We didn't come across ANY snakes or anything scary in the water, thankfully! I did some research just to verify there's no bull shark or alligator possibly in there because it's not connected to bodies of water like that, just clean spring fed water. No worries about brain or skin eating bacteria because of the temperature and movement of the water. We could see through the water well and saw the beautiful fish! Wish we would have added a kayaking excursion of an hour plus instead of just floating a small part on our own. We seriously say sweet Wahwahtaysee dreams every night since we came back home looking forward to going back here for at least 3 days next time. Gracias, y hasta pronto! ~Maria

What a gem, customer service is top notch. The pool is amazing. Such a quiet and beautiful part of Texas. Mark made our stay super comfortable and easygoing. He mixes a strong drink as well ;)

This resort has been quite a disappointment. The cabins are very tiny, it was at least to say not very clean and a partner with Aveda has been long gone, since they have supermarket bottles of Dove now. You have a BBQ area, but no small table to eat your prepared food. Hearing in the cabin, but the bathroom is so cold, you don’t even want to go there. The property didn’t respond to email in our case and the breakfast service was so complicated and unwelcoming, we left it. Can only order 48 hours in advance if you are lucky. Pool is freezing and nobody made it inviting to sit there by the fire place. There was no fire. There are much better places to go for this money.

Yelp
G L A M P I N G [ glam-ping ] Noun Informal. The activity of camping with some of the comforts and luxuries of home. A fusion of glamour and camping. This was our first glamping adventure and didn't know what to expect. We had a blast... totally & utterly enjoyed every second of our experience from beginning to end. Donny from the Concierge Team provided us with excellent instructions, directions, attention, and was very responsive to every need. We stayed in the Stargazer tent and were in awe by the accommodations. Pristine and lots of attention to detail ( i.e. Aveda products, French press, white clean & crisp linens, ice chest, etc.). Not to mention the luxury comforts of air conditioning, electricity, running hot/cold water, and microwave. There's also a fully charged golf cart to scoot around to & from. The outdoor shower was definitely a unique experience in my books. With over 100 acres of land and extensive river frontage, Wahwahtaysee Resort nestled in the heart of Texas Hill Country offers something for everyone. This is the epitome of romantic hols, family vacay or whatever you desperately needed when you proclaim, "Let's disconnect to connect!" Waking up to the sublime view of San Marcos River is the cure for any wanderlust. The Team truly knows how to execute a tranquil and eye catching space- from the quality of the tents to the gorgeous textiles. We are coming back in the Fall to see a meteor shower (fingers crossed). If any of you looking for a 5-star experience under canvas, which focuses on the environment, respecting nature and keeping it high quality and as local and artisan as possible... this is the place to be! Fresh air and absolute leisure...what more could you ask for. Now, start counting on those threads... Yelp
I stayed here for the weekend and this place is very nice. There is an outdoor shower and it is a tent but inside it is really like a little apartment. They are very new and the designs are very trendy and nice. The area is very quiet but remote of course. HEB is about 25 minutes away. San Marcos is about 25 minutes away. We did float the river at a spot that was about two minutes from the tent. Very nice peaceful relaxing time. Highly highly recommend. OK

Yelp
This was the PERFECT socially distanced getaway that we needed during Covid! The tents are luxurious, the river is cold, and the golf carts made it easy to explore. We went in July 2020, but it looked like they were adding additional fun features, we'd love to go back.

Yelp
Amazing!! I heard about this place from a friend who recently spent a weekend here. I am not big on camping and I've been fooled before with "glamping" so I wasn't sure what to expect. It is hard to find, we passed the turn in a few times but finally found it. The land is very nice and very well kept, you can tell the owners put a lot of time and effort into this area. The property is large, there are 3 "tents" which are spaced just far enough apart for privacy. The tents are actually called yerts and they are amazing. This is true glamping, AC, fine furnishings and modern interior. The shower is huge you could easily fit 5 people in there comfortably, we didn't but you could. The tub is large and deep, it was so refreshing. Each tent comes with its own big green egg for grilling, classy touch right? They also have a yeti cooler on each porch and even come to fill it with ice. I know mind blowing stuff but that's only the beginning. You also get a golf cart to get you around the property, I don't know about you but I am lazy so not having to hike to the river was a huge bonus! Lastly, the outdoor shower..!! This thing has changed my life, my husband literally had to drag me out of there most days. I'm seriously contemplating an outdoor shower at home now. All in all this place is top notch glamping, it's very rare to see a place online and it actually look like the photos. If you hate camping and outdoors like me you're going to love this glamping!
