R and I came here for lunch because he wanted spam musubi, and, since he invited me and was going to pay, who am I to say no? :-)
There are less than 10 parking spaces in front of the restaurant, with more (not many, though) spaces behind the building. There is also a larger parking lot at the little strip mall next door, but I would assume that the business owners there would not appreciate any of Waikikie's customers parking there.
Due to Covid-19, the main dining area is not being used and is closed - it's either take out from here or dining in the patio, although the patio is enclosed so it's almost like being inside. There are three tables in the patio. I would not suggest eating in the patio because the patio is where customers walk in to either place their orders and/or pick up their food. The employee who took our orders was nice and efficient. She wore a facemask as she walked quickly between the patio and the kitchen, relaying the orders to the kitchen and bringing the food to the customers.
R ordered the Kalua pork meal and the spam musubi, and I ordered the Hawaiian bbq beef plate. The pork and beef had good flavor, and both of them were tender. The restaurant provided some nice tasting teriyaki sauce that I put on the beef and the sauce enhanced the beef flavor. Beside the meats, both of our orders came with some sautéed cabbage and onions that didn't have much flavor, two small scoops of white steamed rice (which was on the mushy side - too much water) and a very small scoop of Hawaiian style macaroni salad. Although the spam musubi looked great, the two big pieces we shared lacked the bold salty taste of the spam that I was expecting, and the rice was slightly mushy.
My parents are from Hawaii; I grew up in Southern California. I am very familiar with Hawaiian cuisine. The food at Waikikie is just ok, because it missed the mark on some of the flavors of the dishes. I honestly thought the macaroni salad was the most authentic tasting out of the whole meal. It would be nice if management here increased their serving sizes of rice and macaroni salad. Those are actually less expensive foods to make, so don't scrimp on the amount you provide with the meals. Let the customers feel like they got a good deal.
