This Summer’s Top Spots for Dairy-Free Frozen Treats

"Tucked inside Union Way, this Hawaiian-style shave ice shop serves photogenic fluffy ice spheres topped with fresh fruit and haupia (coconut milk) foam. Vegans can have their pick of creations, from the vivid violet ube topped with toasted coconut to the tropical pineapple-meets-strawberry Lava Flow. Customers can order online in advance through the website — just be sure to arrive at Wailua on time so your shave ice isn’t left sitting and melting at the service window." - Waz Wu

Where to Find Chilly, Snowy Shaved Ice Desserts in Portland

"For years, this Hawaiian shave ice shop has been a favorite among tourists and locals spending afternoons downtown, finishing a day of shopping with snowballs in fruit-juice-tinted pastel hues. Most varieties arrive with a dollop of house “foam,” like the coconut-y haupia foam or purple ube foam. Vegans will find plenty of options here without sacrificing flavor; the Lava Flow, a pineapple-strawberry shave ice with coconut foam, is a highlight." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

12 Hawaiian Restaurants To Try in Portland - Eater Portland

"This tiny downtown shop that has food truck roots in Kauai commanded lines when it first opened. These Hawaiian snow cones use finely shaved ice piled into fluff flavored with fresh fruit and all-natural syrups to craft traditionally tropical styles like Da Mango One (mango fruit and juice with condensed milk). The cafe also occasionally serves some special only-in-Portland concoctions, like one using Tea Bar’s Mint Majik (peppermint tea and spirulina). Wailua has implemented pickup procedures, but online pre-ordering is a must." - Krista Garcia, Jenni Moore

Portland’s Stellar Ube Treats and Desserts - Eater Portland

"Due to Southeast Asian influences and purple Okinawan sweet potatoes being a staple in Hawaii, vibrant violet desserts also thrive in the aloha state. Among other attention-grabbing options, downtown’s Wailua often offers a stunning ube version of shave ice, flavored with coconut milk and topped with fluffy ube foam and toasted coconut. Wailua has implemented pickup procedures, but online pre-ordering is a must." - Krista Garcia

Google
Initially I did not realize you had to order online, and that it wasn’t a walk in,but other than that this place is truly a gem. My group of 6 shared three of the big bowls and the proportion was plentiful. We ordered the Ube, spread ALOHA, and Wailua sunrise with no modifications. The true star of the show was the Ube. The cloud like foam was amazing paired with the toasted coconuts. If you are interested in making any modifications, adding condensed milk would be the move!

Google
Tasty and refreshing, especially on a hot day! Lost one star because you have to order from a QR code in the hallway, then they call your name to get it while you wait in the hallway. At least there is a cute local shop next door to browse while you wait.

Google
Such a good spot! I was really craving some shave ice and I found this spot on my maps and just had to try. A little heads up, you do have to order online which honestly at first I thought was inconvenient but it just made it so much easier. I got the piña colada shave ice with fresh strawberries on top and it was the best shave ice I’ve ever had. It had such a good natural taste to it, unlike most of the shave ice that I’ve had previously. I love that it all tasted so natural and didn’t have all of the insane colorings and fake flavors to it. 10/10, perfect for a hot summer day! Will definitely be returning.

Google
Wailua Shave Ice in Portland is such a cool spot if you’re craving something refreshing and different. Their shave ice is super light and fluffy kind of like eating a sweet, icy cloud and they use all-natural flavors, which really makes a difference. Ordering is done online via a QR code, and there's no indoor seating. It’s a quick pickup spot, perfect for grabbing a treat while exploring the city . While the lack of seating might be a downside, the quality of the shave ice more than makes up for it 🤤🤤🤤

Google
So incredibly DELICIOUS! Super unique and beautiful, and a true joy to devour. The owners are also AMAZING and have created a really special spot nestled in a beautiful space in Portland. Totally worth a visit!

Google
Really delicious Hawaiian shaved ice. I had the ube one and it was incredible. You order online using the QR code. There was a lot of people waiting outside but they move quickly and we had our order in less than 10 minutes.

Google
Shave Ice is all the Rage! What a joy melt in the mouth delight. There is a God and She is from Hawaii. Hallelujah! Had da mango and just had to go back for more after kid forgot/didn’t get theirs. Dog was lovely and enjoyed talking to the man confused about online orders. Online orders! Love it! Featured is only shot I got. Gone too soon

Google
How can shaved ice be so amazing?! It’s like flavored snow in your mouth but a thousand times more delicious! It’s hard to put into words just how incredible this is. The portion sizes are huge, and they even make their purées in-house. They offer vegan flavors too, which I included in a photo with this review. I’ll just leave it at that—they’re amazing! The girl who works there is so nice and patient. There’s always a steady stream of people getting shaved ice from this spot. I know it’s cold in Portland, but trust me, it’s totally worth it!

Yelp
I usually get the ube or love potion at Wailua but tried Spread Aloha, which is dragonfruit/Guava juice topped with a homemade chia haupia cream and fresh strawberries. It was refreshing. You have to order online or scan the QR code at the entrance. There isn't much space to eat your shave ice around the area because there are benches around the hallway, but it's a shared space. Service was quick, but usually busy on warmer days!
google avatar

Julie P.

Yelp
The service is easy to order through the website via square. Tells you the estimated time of pick up and able to look at the cute shop next door. The shave ice is delicious just wish they'd give more of the juice since the center wasn't filled so it got bland. First time trying the guava flow and it was refreshing and addicting. Will come back.

Yelp
It's located in a small alley with small shops. Lava Flow 5/5 Mmmmmm. The pineapple juice flavor is so strong! It's very refreshing. The fruit toppings weren't so sweet, sadly. The white foam on top was amazing. Overall a very refreshing pineapple shaved ice! We biked here, parking probably super bad.

Yelp
This is one of the best shaved ice places I've been to! It is so refreshing and revived me during my Portland trip. I'm a sucker for Ube, so that's the one I got. It was so delicious, and the portions are huge and cheap! One of my favorite things I ate during my trip!
google avatar

Yelp
This is probably the best Hawaiian shave ice I've had in the Portland area. It tastes more natural and real compared to others I've tried from food trucks, which often taste fake and cheap due to the syrup they use--almost like drinking chemicals. I didn't get that feeling at all with Wailua Shave Ice. I ordered online to save time because I knew parking could be an issue. I'd heard a lot about this place, but the parking situation had always held me back from visiting. As expected, parking was terrible. I ended up in a "no parking" spot outside, hoping I could just get in and out quickly. Even with my online order and arriving on time, I still had to wait about five minutes past the pick-up time. Fortunately, my car was still there when I got out. I'd come here more often if the parking wasn't so difficult. I probably wouldn't drive here just for it again, but I'd definitely visit if I'm in the area or taking public transit downtown.

Yelp
As someone born and raised in HI I will recommend this place! The mango shave ice was so good! Order online and wait for your name to be called! There's a cute shop next door to spend some time while you wait! I just got the keiki size and it was big for 1 person! Paid street parking nearby.

Yelp
Omgggg best shaved ice ever! It literally is so fluffy and melts in your mouth. The ube was a good flavor. Not extremely sweet even with the condensed milk. I love anything ube flavored! But I'm sure any one of their shaved iced is delicious! I also got their li hing mui powdered mixed candies. They were okay. I want a fan of the redvines. They were out of the ones with chamoy which I really wanted! But if you need a quick cool down stop by Wailua to get some shaved ice.

Yelp
Spotted this place because it was close by to Powell's, and though I was a little doubtful at first (how good could a Hawaiian shave ice be here in Portland??) but I was actually pleasantly surprised. My order: rainbow with snow cap, regular size, $8 Pros: - Decent portions, and I liked the rainbow snow cap flavor because it reminded me of classic Hawaiian shave ice. It was a little on the sweeter side, but I didn't mind on this day because I was craving a dessert. The condensed milk was very delicious - Easy ordering via a QR code, this is not necessarily a sit-down establishment, although there are a few tables outside that are shaded since it's in this indoor hallway area. - The shave ice actually tasted quite authentic, not too icy or crunchy - Came out pretty quickly, wasn't a long wait. - Different sizes available Cons: - I have AT&T and the signal wasn't great right outside the establishment - I had to have a friend order for me on her phone unfortunately, so that can be annoying. - Parking can be tricky, so I would recommend walking/uberring/public transit in this area Overall, if I'm in this area I would definitely come back! Surprisingly authentic this far from Hawaii

Yelp
Better than ever. Highly recommend. I have only had one bad experience here but the last 5 have been Ono Good!

Yelp
Delicious on a hot day! There is contactless online ordering only which was a little difficult if you have AT&T since there is not a great signal close to the store. Me and my friends got: - Rainbow shave ice: a little sweet for my liking and heavy handed on syrups -- a solid shave ice combo that reminds you of being in Hawaii - Da Mango One: a must get if you like mangoes! Super delicious and topped with ripe mangoes. What's not to like! - Guava Flow: guava flavor was delicious throughout! I didn't know what to expect from the haupia foam, but I was pleasantly surprised by the lightness of the foam. Tasted like I was eating a cloud.

Yelp
The online ordering system, is frankly, so irritating. They're still set up for Covid safety. The actual shave ice makes up for the annoying online ordering. Portions are large, but the quality is top notch. The strawberry guava was truly like a visit to Hawaii.

Yelp
I've been here two times in a week and I'm not sad about it. If you're craving Hawaiian shaved ice this place is a no brainer. The Lava Flow and Da Mango One with ice cream were delicious options and I could have easily eaten another serving. There is a small and regular option and I would just go for the bigger one because you won't regret eating more. Will be coming back for more!

Yelp
The fact that they have lihing powder as a topping already sets the bar! I luckily stumbled upon this little gem as I was walking through the area. I find it very hard to find a good shave ice place on mainland. And I was especially surprised to find one in Portland! Wailua shave ice is a Hawaiian style shaved ice place. They make their ice very thin and soft and nothing like your typical snow cone. The fact that the owners are from Kauai is a bonus as my family is from there as well. They most certainly do not skimp out on syrup or toppings. I would highly recommend this place if you are in the area. The only downside is that they do not have indoor seating. However, there are plenty of benches you can sit at nearby the store itself. This will be added to my must stops in Portland!
google avatar

Linda H.

Yelp
Five stars for this Hawaiian shave ice spot. Everything is tasty and so refreshing. My favorite is the Lava Flow with ice cream added. One order is generous so it could be shared but it also could be eaten by one person. They used to have limited seating but now it seems like you just do a mobile order and pick up from the window once your order is ready. If you're lucky, you can sometimes find a bench to sit on in the hall.

Yelp
Great ice even on a cold day. Would certainly come back. Order online ahead of time if there's a long time.

Yelp
They are from the island of Kauai ! What a hidden gem. All the island flavors and a very sweet and courteous staff! They bring in other local items from time to time. Stop by here for a trip back home! Adorable Instagram worthy decor!
google avatar

Yelp
There's shave"d" ice, and then there's "shave Ice". Hawaiian "shave ice" is so good. The ice is fine grained and texture-full, allowing you to taste the full flavors. Shave ice is one of the best parts of Hawaii! Only in Portland, is there another US location for Hawaiian shave ice. I got to taste Hawaii, without flying to Hawaii! 5/5 recommend
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
A returning customer to this refreshing shaved ice place. I wish more locations of this opened up. It's tucked down an alleyway in the middle of DT PDX. The perfect airy and light ice consistency and super strong flavors! Not too sweet, but really authentic deep flavor. They have an all online ordering system and can order it for the pickup time you want. I don't believe they accept cash walk up orders. Everything is still blocked off inside, so you just go up to the window and show your order receipt. I noticed on their online ordering site they have some limited edition flavor combos, but it said out of stock. Prices are high, but it's so worth it.
google avatar

Jazmine R.

Yelp
The ube is a must here with added mangos! It doesn't taste all artificial and there is just the right amount on top! They were also so kind and asked to put it in the fridge while we looked at the candle place next door so it wouldn't melt. It really tastes like the ones in Hawaii!
google avatar

Yelp
Hands down the best shave ice I've ever had -- better even than our (previous) favorite shave ice place on the island of Kauai! We'll definitely be visiting their Kapa'a location next time we're on island. For our first visit, we opted to keep it simple and ordered the "Come on Barbie, We go Wailua!" with a condensed milk "snow cap." I don't know how they shave their ice, but it was absolutely perfect. Based on food quality alone -- 5 stars for sure! However, there were a few non-food shortcomings. First, their location is a little odd -- just a window in a covered alley/hallway of other shops. There are a few benches nearby, but it would be nice if they provided more dedicated seating for their patrons. Second, all orders are done online -- no in-person orders. This probably works ok for most people, but would definitely be problematic for some. And finally, it was very disappointing that they don't provide a garbage can anywhere near their shop. You have to take your empty containers with you and find a city garbage can out on the street. That's just not very customer-friendly.
google avatar

Jeanne Z.

Yelp
This is an easy stop after going to Powell's Bookstore on Burnside! You just cross the street- and you can order online when you are in Powell's so it is ready when you walk up to the shop!! I've gotten the Orange Dream and the Love Potion #9- when I got the Love Potion #9 I added extra Nutella, it went really well with the Strawberries! THis place is great, whatever the weather is outside, the Shave Ice is delicious!
google avatar

Amelia R.

Yelp
Wailea shave ice uses fresh ingredients to make Instagram worthy shave ice desserts that make you feel like you are visiting Hawaii! We enjoyed the lava flow and orange dream. The orange dream tasted just like a original orange Julius. The. Lava flow was delicious but the strawberry and coconut flavors were so lite that it was really just a pineapple shave ice, I wish the coconut and strawberry were more prominent. Keep in mind you will need street parking that is paid. There is also zero seating inside the restaurant as you can only do online order pickup. The time of ordering to pickup was decently quick, around 10-15 mins after placing the order. I wish that the storefront was open to allow for additional seating. There are a few outdoor picnic tables nearby but those are essentially useless most of the year with the rain. We will definitely be back to try some of the other flavors!

Yelp
SOOOOO GOOD! It's a very popular place so be prepared to wait a bit if it's a beautiful hot day. The wait for this one was around 20ish mins but there was a back-up due to a complicated customer that slowed them down a bit. The owner handled the situation very well and even offered refunds for the hold up. I'm glad we made the decision to wait. The surrounding area is decent; there are plenty of savory food options, shopping, and the Powell bookstore is across the street so that you could make the most out of your trip here. The establishment is located in a hallway shared with other businesses but it was easy to find. You order online and pick up at a window - they are completely cashless. There is seating for you while you wait, but I don't recommend eating there as it could get crowded and there are better options right outside the hallway in front of Shake Shack (that's where the blue benches are that I sat at!) It was real cute today, lots of people out and about and a cool guy playing the trumpet on the corner to add an extra special ambiance to our experience. The shaved ice was fluffy, perfectly sweet, and refreshing! The mango slices on top were fresh, and a great addition to add a smooth texture to the treat. We opted to add some cream foam on top and it meshed very well with the mango and condensed milk. The ratio of ice to sweet ingredients created a nice balance that wasn't overwhelming, but very enjoyable! My friends got the Love Potion and Almond Joy and I'll tell you this: all of our bowls were as clean as a cycle in the dishwasher when we were done. Next time I'm in Portland on a hot day I won't miss the opportunity to treat myself to Wailua!

Yelp
I LOVE shaved ice. I love it so much I have stood on a figurative podium to talk about the different types of shaved ice at someone that was obviously not interested (it was my friend so it is ok). Unfortunately I was in Portland during a heat wave when I came here. I placed an online order. Then the email told me to be at the store 5 minutes before the pick up time. I got there and ended up waiting nearly 30 minutes. Not because I was late, but because there was a backlog of orders. The worst thing was that you can't talk to the employee because they have blocked off the entrance like how restaurants had done during the start of the pandemic. You pick up your order at the desk in front of the entrance. I had been waiting for a *while* when they announced that they wouldn't accept any more orders because they were going to close. Some people left. I got stressed out because I wasn't sure if that meant my order had made the cut and if I should continue waiting. We had driven from Beaverton to downtown Portland just for this darn dessert because we weren't able to come the previous day due to our tight schedule. This place also closes at 3 PM. When I finally got it, I was in a bad mood. And my partner photographed me while I was upset. Then I tried my ube shaved ice and it was delicious. And we walked back to our car, past the homeless encampment alleyway and the street that smells like urine, and drove away from Portland. Order the ube. Do not wait over 30 minutes because no dessert is worth the wait. They need to update the wait time on their email.
google avatar

Bernice C.

Yelp
Get the ube!! The ube is so unique with the toppings and flavour. I also got the strawberry but it wasn't anything special. It was a little on the sweeter end. My friend and I got both kid sizes and thought we could've shared one. So if you're not a big eater, make sure to get the kid size or even share! It was also a little expensive at $7 per cone (kid size)!
google avatar

Kim T.

Yelp
So tasty and refreshing! We got the pineapple flavor and it comes with a super yummy coconut foam on top. Definitely on the sweeter side but a yummy treat on a hot day!
google avatar

Eric A.

Yelp
I visited their OG location on Kauai awhile back and after one visit, it became my favorite shave ice on the island. I was blown away when I learned they had a location in Portland! You know how shave ice is generally pure sugar with flavors that are super fake? Not this place. The flavors are smooth, sophisticated, and sweet without being over the top. Order on their website before you show up. You only need to put the order in around five minutes before showing up and it will help you "skip" the line. The employees work quickly through the orders. I love the piña colada. And odds are if they have any seasonal flavors - they're gonna be banging. I had a blackberry lemonade one to celebrate the Barbie movie and it was FANTASTIC.
google avatar

Naly S.

Yelp
I enjoy going here when I'm in the area! It sucks the location is kind of inconvenient- lack of parking small seating area nestled in a building with other businesses. Not really a comfortable area to sit and enjoy it. The shaved ice is refreshing but the best part is the foam they top it off with! So yummy. Pretty standard service.
google avatar

Rena G.

Yelp
This is not the traditional shave ice I knew growing up in Hawai'i. It's bougie shave ice-- one of the greatest gems in Portland, and truly a delightful afternoon gourmet treat! With so many toppings to choose from, you'll never get bored trying out new combinations with every visit. My all-time fave is Love Potion w/ Haupia Foam, Ice Cream & Condensed Milk. You also can't go wrong with anything that says ube in it. For those who don't know the history of this iconic local dessert from Hawai'i, shave ice (or ice shave as it's known on the Big Island) traces its roots all the way back to the mid-1800's during the time of the controversial plantation era. It was actually the Japanese immigrants who first introduced the concept of "kakigori" or shaved ice in the Hawaiian islands. They used their tools to finely shave large blocks of ice into soft, light pillowy flakes into a cup or bowl, then coated it with sugar or fruit juice to cool off after a hot, hard day's work in the fields. Other immigrant cultures in Hawai'i also have similarly popularized icy cold treats, such as Korean bingsu and Filipino halo-halo.

Yelp
Happy Hawaiian memory. Saw the owner at Sam's Club with my friend. I'm super cool to see him just out and about. Delicious shaved ice. Don't get the small it's not enough. It's so delicious you want more.
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Shoutout to the short staff working during this heat wave! Came here twice on Monday and Tuesday. Monday only had 2 staff member. Tuesday only had 1!! She was quick as she could be and made sure to communicate with guest of the longer wait period and that she'd be happy to support customers if wait was too long. I hope she gets a bonus that day as she worked on a hot day! Shaved ice was delicious and hit the spot during this heat wave. Unfortunately many food items weren't available. Order online only and wait for pick up. I wonder if they will do a fundraiser for Maui victims?
google avatar

Yelp
This place was sooo good. It was kind of like a cross between a Hawaiian shaved ice place and a Taiwanese shaved ice place. The syrups used were packed with flavor. I ordered the mango and it really reminded me of the shaved ice I eat in Taiwan. They definitely use real fruit. My friend tried the ube flavor which surprisingly had a lot of flavor which I find rare in ube desserts. It was a little sweet for my taste though
google avatar

Mia H.

Yelp
After coming back from Hawaii and trying the shaved ice there, I wanted to update with my recent experience here. This time, I tried mango and pina colada flavors (in addition to the classic and always delicious ube), and they were phenomenal. I think Wailua shave ice does an amazing job at doing the foams (identical to the ones in Hawaii), the syrup is always flavorful and sweet, and the ice is soft. By far the best Hawaiian/Western shaved ice spot in Portland.
google avatar

Andrew R.

Yelp
Whew chile this was such a refreshing and delicious little treat! I had just finished hiking a couple miles and wanted a fun little treat, and decided on the Almond Joy (Coconut milk, Nutella drizzle, toasted almonds & coconut) and it was DELICIOUS! I got the kids size, which was actually plenty big (though I think I'd get the regular size next time because it really was that good). The employee making the shave ice was really dedicated to crafting them in a way that was super pretty, but also functional - as in, making sure to put the Nutella drizzle all throughout the shave ice, instead of just a pump on top. This dedication is what really made this place a true 5/5 for me. HIGHLY recommend trying this place!

Yelp
I ordered the keiki size ube shaved ice online and it exceeded expectations! Pick up time was 4pm and it was ready on time. They turn on and off ordering if it gets overwhelmingly busy FYI. The ube shaved ice was fragrant, smooth, creamy, and had good texture. The coconut flakes were a great addition too. I would have added mochi if it wasn't sold out. This is probably the best or one of the best shaved ice I've ever had! I've had it several times in CA and Hawaii too. I stopped by 30 minutes later because the ube was just so good I had to try another flavor. This time I ordered the keiki mango shaved ice and added strawberries for almost $1. It wasn't as good as the ube IMO. The condensed milk didn't complement the fruitiness and for $1 I thought they would give at least one WHOLE strawberry but it was less than one. I'd definitely come back if I'm ever in the area again and I think the keiki size is perfect!! No need to get the regular size since the portion is so good already.

Yelp
My fiancé and I were craving some dessert around the Portland area and came across Wailua shave ice. It's located downtown in a small indoor division with other random stores next to it. Keep in mind that parking is extremely difficult to find, but there is a garage about a block or two away. They only accept online orders at this time so you probably won't find an updated menu on yelp- be sure to check their online ordering platform to see what they offer. I ordered the love potion with condensed milk and vanilla bean ice cream in the bottom, and my fiancé ordered the Ube with vanilla bean ice cream as well. I highly, highly recommend adding ice cream and condensed milk to your shaved ice because it just adds that much extra deliciousness to it. let me tell you! This is by far one of the best shaved ice desserts I've ever tried. It honestly compares exactly, if not better than the shaved ice in Hawaii. I said what I said! The shaved ice literally melts in your mouth and is super light not to mention it being packed with so much flavor. The parents so well fed but definitely ice cream and it was not too sweet or heavy. If you don't finish it all, they give you a straw as well and drinking the melted shaved ice and ice cream was like heaven. This will forever be on our must go tos in Portland and should definitely be in your top five things to try it when in the area.

Yelp
Cute Hawaiian shaved ice stand in a covered shopping aisle. Order through their Square shop online, go for a walk around the block, then pick up from the counter. You can imagine this place gets pretty busy on a hot day! If there's lots of people loitering nearby, be prepared for a bit of a wait. Fortunately there's plenty of window shopping to be done in the rest of the aisle, if you're into hipster clothes and goods. It's difficult picking from all the flavors, but ultimately I ordered the Keiki Ube with Li Hing Mui (sour plum powder). I couldn't really taste the plum powder, but otherwise the shave ice was soft, flavorful, creamy, and did not disappoint.

Yelp
Decided to go to Portland instead of Hawaii? Satisfy your shave ice craving at Wailua Shave Ice (Portland). Originated in Kapaa, Hawaii, they brought their delicousness to Oregon! And i'm so glad they did! I think Portland needs something like this! Parking is very difficult given it's in downtown. Street parking or garage parking thats probably about 1-2 blocks away. They're located inside a small shopping center. So it might be hard to miss. We went on a good day because it was not busy! So our wait wasn't too long. My fiance ordered the Love Potion #9 and I ordered the Ube. We both opted for ice cream which is a must, in our opinion, when ordered shave ice. The only thing is we wish they offered macadamia ice cream in addition to vanilla. The shave ice is exactly how it's prepared in Hawaii. So smooth, so soft and so flavorful. It is not your average shave ice that used chunky ice and just has syrup poured on top. Both of our choices were so delicious! It's honestly the perfect treat! The ube is exactly how ube should taste and the ube coconut foam and toasted coconut also adds more texture to your shave ice! It's a party for your taste buds! The Love Potion #9 has vanilla bean milk, strawberry puree, and fresh strawberry! So if you're a strawberry lover, for sure get that one! The only regret my fiance and I have is not going every day during our trip to Portland!

Yelp
We stopped by here after breakfast and it was a short 5 minute walk from the restaurant. The corridor is really pretty but it looked like a lot of places weren't open or went out of business. We got rainbow and even my daughter said it was way too sweet. That's coming from a kid who loves candy and shave ice! Maybe it was the flavor but seeing as how the staple flavor is bad I don't see how the others would be good. The ice melts way too quickly. I've had better shave ice.

Yelp
Best shaved ice. Order at the window, pick up when ready and sit in the hallway or out on picnic benches. Bring friends so you can order a variety and share!

Yelp
THE BEST SHAVED ICE - hands down!!! I've had my fair share of Hawaiian shaved ice in Oahu and Maui, but this one takes the cake. Oddly enough, I've tried the Wailua in Oahu and I'm fairly sure they're the same franchise (somebody fact check me) but the one in Portland was sooooo much better for some reason. We almost didn't stop by because we visited Portland during the historic snowstorm this year but at the last min, we decided to just go and I am sooo glad we did because it ended up being such a wonderful experience. It was a little hard to find the entrance. There's a ton of construction being done around the building so we ended up having to call to ask how we find them. Once you find the secret entrance, there's a cute hallway that houses a couple other shops. For Wailua, you have to place your order online, and once it's ready, they'll set it on the little table outside. You can not go into their store. We opted to share a Keiki size of the Lava Flow flavor. The Keiki is a child's size but it's honestly perfect to share or eat on your own if you have more of a sweet tooth. The Lava Flow consists of shaved ice, pineapple juice, haupia foam, strawberry puree, fresh strawberry & pineapple. I added a snow cap (condensed milk drizzle), cause that's a must for me, every time. This was soo refreshing and sweet but not overly, and still delicious on a nice Winter's day. You can tell the syrups are good quality and I love the addition of the fresh fruit. I will make it a point to visit any time we wander back to Portland. It's THAT good!

Yelp
I've always heard amazing things about Hawaiian shaved ice, and it 100% lives up to the hype. It was my first time visiting Wailua and the staff was quick to answer any questions I had. The shop was tiny but had fun artwork/decor and I appreciate the walk up to-go window. I ordered the mango shaved ice with toasted coconut shavings and it was so perfectly creamy and refreshing. As soon as I started walking down the street, someone stopped me to ask where I ordered it because it just looked that good. I can't wait to come back and try some of the other flavors.

Yelp
As person with a big sweet tooth and as a person who lived on Oahu for a few years, Wailua Shave Ice was a must try. The shop is located in a little corridor. There is paid parking nearby and you can use the 20 bus too. The ordering process is placing an order on their website and waiting for them to put the shave ice on the table outside of the store once it is ready. All the offerings are preset. You can't make up your own flavor choices. It's also pretty fancy with fresh fruit and foams on the shave ice. I got the Lava Flow which was huge! The ice was soft and the perfect texture. The strawberries were fresh and delicious. The haupia foam was nice and I liked the coconut flavor. I added ice cream to the bottom of it which I really didn't need to do because I think it didn't really need it. Overall, I'm looking forward to revisiting for a treat.

Yelp
I'm giving this 3 stars because it really depends on what flavor you get. I love coconut and mango so the two times I came here we tried the triple mango and triple coconut flavors. The mango was great! No complaints and the shaved ice was top quality. Expensive but worth it! The coconut was just so bad. The ice tasted like nothing - no flavor. The toasted coconut on top gave it a savory flavor. And the coconut foam was not sweet enough. I struggled to finish it (I wasn't gonna throw it away with how expensive it was!). Overall, I do recommend coming here, just don't get the coconut flavor. Try the mango!

Yelp
So good we had to come twice! I really liked their ube, my partner enjoyed their mango, and the haupia topping is so fluffy! Best shaved ice I've had on the mainland. Unfortunately they didn't allow for modifications while I was there, but I'm hoping that they allow it next time we visit!

Yelp
You can taste right away that ingredients are fresh, not overtly sugary, just plain good. Inhale, gulp, sip, enjoy each bite as there's not better shave ice I've had in a while. Reminds me of Ululani's of Maui fame.

Yelp
If you're wanting to feel some Hawaiian vibes on a cloudy Portland day, this is your spot!! This shop is based off their original location in Hawaii, and these ices taste like they are straight from the islands. Love the variety of fruity flavors, but also chocolatey-nutty flavors too. Make sure to come by in the afternoon, because they close before dinner time!

Yelp
Tucked away in an alley lined with boutique clothing shops, I spotted Wailua on my journey to Powell's City of Books (which is nearby). Wailua is literally a hole in the wall, and to order, you scan a QR code and pick up at the window. The menu offers a variety of fruity, island-inspired flavors that can be customized with various toppings. I ordered Da Mango One, which was prepared in about ten minutes (there were a couple of people waiting for their orders when I arrived). Da Mango One was topped with chunks of mango and a drizzle of sweetened and condensed milk, which lent the shave ice a creamy texture like ice cream. The mango flavor tasted authentic and not overly syrupy, and the kid size was just right for a light snack (there is one other slightly larger size). While there is no designated seating area, the alleyway is lined with benches on which you can enjoy your shave ice and people watch.
