How These Family Hotels Have Survived for Generations - AFAR

"While select rooms have been restored to look as they were when the hotel opened in 1908, the fifth-generation owners invested $10 million updating the rest of this storied property in the Swiss Alps." - Heidi Mitchell

Hotel Waldhaus Sils (Sils Maria, Swiss Alps) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"A short drive from St. Moritz, but worlds apart in spirit, Hotel Waldhaus sits above Sils Maria like something out of a storybook. Still in the same family five generations later, it is a true grand hotel: stately and full of personality. The original key racks are still in use, the staircase still creaks, and the views, across glassy lakes and snowy peaks, still stop you mid-sentence. With 140 rooms, a forest-fringed spa, and just enough eccentricity, it’s as timeless as the landscape around it." - Tablet Hotels

Hotel Waldhaus | Best luxury ski hotels in Europe

"Following a £33 million renovation, this iconic hotel (featured in Sorrentino’s 2015 film Youth) has been restored to its former Belle Epoque glory. Rooms are plush and spacious, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing mountain views. The property’s centrepiece is the state-of-the-art spa, with its indoor pool housed inside a glass cube, showcasing 360-degree panoramic views. The four on-site restaurants, take guests on a gastronomic journey through the Alps, Italy, Lebanon and Thailand. " - Nicola Iseard

Its one of the best hotels in Europe that I have ever been to. We have visited multiple countries in Europe, Switzerland itself 3 times. But Waldhaus Sils is an absolute gem. The rooms are great. Food at the Giger restaurant is too good. Their wine list is excellent. They service the rooms twice a day. They can arrange your horse carriage trip to Val Fex which is heavenly. Only thing is- the hotel is on a hilltop with a steep climb. We enjoyed our 3 nights stay thoroughly. Would love to go back again.

-->>> This review is for those interested in booking Small Single rooms. |||This hotel is a gem, and has many wonderful rooms full of history and charm. However, I was deeply disappointed by the room that I got. On paper (=email), I booked a traditional room with a view on the Sils lake to be able to watch the sunset (following Tripadvisor reviewers' tips), for which I paid an extra fee. Oh boy when I entered room 187, I was met with Ibis/airport hotel style design!!! The view was there, yes, but I could have had that view in other hotels of Sils. I expressed my concern to the reservation staff, since I had a confirmation for a tradition single +lake view room. They pointed out that the hotel does not have Small Single traditional rooms with the Sils lake view. That's understandable, but they should have informed me about it in the booking confirmation. They did show me another room, traditional, which has a view on the opposite side (thus no sunset). I tried to upgrade my room to another option with Sils lake view (ready to pay for it), but the staff wasn't really helpful (maybe a bit junior).||I was truly disappointed to spend the last day of my trip in such a unique setting and end up in such a room.||Other than that, the hotel has a wonderful atmosphere and a wellness spa that reminded me of Turrell's art pieces. It is definitely worth visiting. I care for hotels like these, with unique character and authenticity. This is my humble attempt to encourage the Waldhaus to keep investing in being authentic to themselves, because I am a client who cares about preserving this kind of hotels, in a world full of airport-style stays.

The Waldhaus Sils is a place of rare history and culture — a hotel that truly sparkles with character and a deep sense of heritage. Its setting is breathtaking, and there’s a timeless charm in every corner, from the grand interiors to the peaceful surroundings. The small Stübli and the cheese restaurant were absolute highlights — warm, authentic, and filled with that unmistakable Swiss soul. However, for the price, the service felt inconsistent and at times impersonal. It occasionally seemed that the guest’s experience wasn’t always the priority, and the sheer number of guests somewhat diminished the intimate, special atmosphere the Waldhaus is known for. Despite this, the Waldhaus Sils remains a destination — steeped in history, beautifully situated, and brimming with culture. With more attentive service, it could easily live up to the magic its setting and story promise.

I join all the laudatory reviews and write just to mention two things I didn't see mentioned elsewhere. First, although there is no air conditioning, fans are available on request. Generally it cools down at night, and for that reason, there don't seem to be any complaints on T/A about the lack of a/c. Second, if you're willing to pay for a room with a view, room 51 is fabulous. There are views to the lakes to the East and the West, and north to a mountain. It's large with some lovely esthetic touches. See photo.

I'm not surprised that so many famous people have come here! And not just for skiing. Sils Maria is away from the big resorts and you can enjoy real privacy in beautiful nature. Even in winter it's great to go cross-country skiing on frozen lakes, in summer to ride a bike. The hotel itself has a beautiful hall, where it's a pleasure to sit for afternoon tea or in the small launges to feel like you're in an old club. It has very high-quality facilities for guests and a very qualified reception. And what I really like, that it's one of the few hotels in Engadine that offers single rooms. It's a hotel for loners and old bachelors. And they always have something interesting to tell. Thank you to all of you who take care of us.

Daniela brought me oat milk for my morning coffee daily and made a special tea of lemon and ginger for a sudden sore throat. ||My friend is celiac, and they brought her gluten free bread every day! So spectacular! ||They have a music room where you can play old vinyl records. ||Love this place!!!

We came here for the Spa. It is a lot more private (children under 14 not allowed into the Spa area) and the Service is class. Avoid Peak times by going during hours that hotel guests eat lunch / dinner etc if you're not staying here
