On December 26, 2025, in the late afternoon.
During my visit, I was trying on sweatshirts in the aisle. After finishing, I placed all items back on hangers and kept only the sweatshirts that fit, which I was holding in my hands with the intention to purchase. I was then approached by Asset Protection and accused of stealing.
I was asked if I had tried on the sweatshirts, and I answered honestly that I had. I was told that dressing rooms should be used for trying on clothing, and I immediately acknowledged this, apologized, and agreed. At that point, the situation should have been resolved.
Instead, the staff member escalated the interaction by stating that I was being monitored by cameras, that Walmart staff were watching me, and that the police had been called and were outside waiting for me. These statements were untrue, intimidating, and inappropriate, particularly given that I had committed no theft, had the merchandise visible in my hands, and was actively shopping.
After this interaction, I was followed around the store by Asset Protection, which made me feel humiliated, targeted, and treated like a criminal despite having done nothing wrong. This conduct was unnecessary, unprofessional, and deeply upsetting.
If trying on clothing in the aisle is against store policy, that policy should be communicated calmly and respectfully. Threats, false claims of police involvement, and continued surveillance of a customer who has not committed a crime are not appropriate or acceptable ways to handle a minor policy issue.
I hope anyone reading this, especially those who work at this Walmart receive additional training on professional and respectful customer interaction.
