Walt Disney Used Nuclear Weapons Technology to Bring the Tiki Room to Life | Eater LA

"Since its 1963 debut inside the theme park, this Polynesian‑themed animatronic show—famous for singing parrots, dancing flowers and other robot performers—has remained a popular attraction. KCET’s research reveals that its early mechanics repurposed 1950s U.S. nuclear‑weapons‑era technology: Walt Disney enlisted Wernher von Braun as a technical advisor and adapted the Polaris submarine magnetic‑tape control system to keep the birds in tune and to coordinate lights and music. Massive computers under the floor originally ran the show and produced so much heat that it became the park’s first air‑conditioned attraction. Though the control systems have since been modernized (now run by the equivalent of a MacBook, per KCET), those ballistic‑missile‑era innovations—combined with Disney’s earlier animatronic experiments in film and at the 1964 World’s Fair—made the moving, speaking animal kingdom possible." - Mona Holmes

Who doesn’t love the Tiki room. Surprisingly it wasn’t very busy for a weekend. Love the music and the cool lights. We didn’t get a file whip this time but normally we do. The pineapple float is the family favorite. Ten out of ten totally recommend checking out the Tiki Room.

A classic in Disneyland, The Enchanted Tiki Room is a historical amusement for animatronics. The birds were really good, and the music is super catchy! It’s also a nice place to sit down and rest a second. The speakers sounded off though, but it’s still a nice reset with a Dole Whip!

This is a game with a long history in Disneyland. I have played it since the first time I went there forty years ago, but I still don’t think it is outdated. If you are too tired to walk in the park, I think this is a very suitable game. Sit down and take a rest, listening to the beautiful songs of the birds and flowers, which makes you feel comfortable and relaxed.

Such a great retro attraction, with tons of old school animatronics and a catchy soundtrack. Very kitschy, but in a good way. The shows seems like it's about to end but then develops even further and ends in a really cool way with extra effects to enhance the experience. You can also bring your Dole whip inside and enjoy it during the show.

Tasty pineapple and strawberry dole whip and pork egg rolls... they actually went together very well! Fairly quick service and cushioned chairs for the win.

This year is the 60th anniversary of the Enchanted Tiki Room and it is just as enjoyable as when Walt Disney designed it. The Enchanted Tiki Room was Walt's first invention of audio animatronics and it pays off here. Originally intended to be a restaurant it was changed into the attraction as we know it today. Everyone sits on flat benches surrounding the center fountain and everyone has a good view of all the action around you. Photography is not permitted during the show but it always starts with your cast member waking up your host "Jose" He in turn leads the other tropical parrots into a tropical serenade that will have you singing along with them. Opening with the Tiki room song the water in the center rises to bring down the white birds with their French names to sing "Let's all sing like the birdies sing.." From there each and every part of the tiki room comes alive with songs and drumming of their own until it climaxes with a tropical rain storm! The entire tiki room joins in a grand finale and then Jose tells you to give them a standing ovation. While you are standing he tells you they will perform a magic trick-"they will all make you disappear!" Singing the Dwarf song "Heigh ho Heigh ho, it's out the door you go..." You find your way into the Tropical hideway refreshment area. Be on the lookout there-you'll find an escaped bird, Rosita. This is the full show as it was originally given. Definitely classic Disney at its best!

A relatively hidden oasis along a busy corridor. Take a minute to refuel on the terrace and take in the best show in the park!

Kids always love the Tiki room. We usually try to get there once while we're in the park.
