Overall, I love this store! However, the deli staff are absolutely terrible! I couldn't believe that this was the same place I've shopped for years. If those two ladies are going to be representing this store and their morals, I'll never be back. Never in my over 10 years of shopping have I had an experience as unpleasant as this one. On a positive note, the store manager is still awesome. I just think his hands are tied in handling these two ladies who are known to be problematic.

Google
Unbelievable what happened to this Walts. Walked in and the smell of bad meat overwhelmed me thank goodness for mask. I went to get the bread made by the 3 men of color only to see it was out dated. Not sure who's not managing this Walts but the community deserves better.

Google
Horrible customer service. I felt like an outsider because the two staff members infront at the help center kept staring at eachother as I was speaking to them. The smell is also awful when you walk in… it’s very uncomfortable especially for people with breathing problems it can trigger people. And again the customer service is horrible. Let me know if you need better staff!!!

My first time visiting this store and I absolutely love this store!! Friendly staff, good produce, great bakery items and good sale prices. I'm definitely returning back to this establishment. Oh, you must try the maple bacon doughnut-- it's so delicious w the sweet and salty taste but it's only sold on Wednesday.

Unfortunately, this local grocer is going out of business. Wishing all of the workers the best in finding other employment opportunities! 😁👍

Store staff is very friendly and helpful. Bill, one of the managers, is always willing to take time out to look for an item in the back or quick with a suggestion. Lines are fast. Never a long wait. The desserts counter has a good supply of tasty treats at good prices. The deli has good reasonably priced hot chicken to go and a wide assortment of delicious deli items. The sales ad has numerous great discounts for everyday food items to save you a bunch. The deli serves hot food such as chicken which you can purchase in large quantities for parties. The fried chicken is the best and reasonably priced. The cashier clerks are friendly and helpful. The app is finally working after 2 years.

Didn't get to use my app because cashier was busy talking to the cashier in the next lane and doing busy work stapling papers together. She couldn't apply it once she rang things up as she curtly replied. Tammy was a miserable cashier!!

This is a review, that I am so glad to do. I live a few blocks from this place and I had never been inside. I traveled out of the neighborhood to the other big stores. And their unhelpful staffs. This store damn near welcomes you into their stores, I looked lost at one time and the clerk stopped what he was doing and immediately asked me if he could help me. Their store is well staffed and well stocked I will be making this store my go to store weekly.....the prices are reasonable and fair!! They have an awesome meat selection and a great bakery. There coffee cakes are to die for.

Yelp
I've been shopping here for 5+ years. Never purchased stale bakery products. Never brought home moldy produce. Never had to bring back rotten meat. Seen the manager open up additional check out line when the line grew and guess what? The cashier was in her twenties. Sure the Jewel, ( not Jewels) is close by if you like tiny isles, long lines and waiting for a shopping cart cause they are all in the lot. This is a neighborhood store with friendly staff. Unique, local brands, with fair pricing. Sure they have product that have a short shelf life but it's clearly marked when it is sold at a great value. Some people on a budget might appreciate that. Butcher sets me up with bones for my dog. Ask the butcher at JEWEL do that. No shopping carts flying around in the lot either. They are in the store were they can be used.

Yelp
SPOILED & OUTDATED FOOD!! **SMELL YOUR MEAT BEFORE YOU PAY FOR IT** I am beyond frustrated with the poor quality of food that I purchased from this business. Yesterday I returned the SPOILED ITALIAN SAUSAGE to them, I also returned a slice of cake that was so old that icing was faded yellow in some spots Now today I just thawed the pork steaks that I also purchased... and "you guessed it" SPOILED AS WELL. This was the first (and the last) time that I will ever shop here. I could've gone up the street to a more reputable grocer and yes...maybe spent a bit more but at least I wouldve gotten Quality Food. #LessonLearned... Won't havta yell me twice

Yelp
This was my first time shopping here. Had always drove by as it's nearby to South Suburban College. Didn't know that there were multiple stores in Illinois & Indiana. This location was spacious and at the time I shopped was adequately staffed and had minimum wait times at check-out. It reminded me of Dominick's (Closed) and another competitor starting with name J. My suggestion is to improve signage. Possible to incorporate a more modern design which might drive more consumers to go to the store.

Yelp
New to this area, Walt's in Crete, IL is my local grocery store. Anything else is over 30 min away. You can tell it's been there for a while, but besides, maybe needing some upgrades, it is clean. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The meats and produce are excellent quality for the prices. Delicious! Other grocery prices are comparable to other grocery chains, with frequent sales that are often really great deals. The prices at the bulk spice rack are fantastic. It reminds me of a local grocer in my hometown, way before grocery chains, member warehouse, and specialty stores.

Yelp
I moved to the area in 2008. Both my parents spoke highly of walts. I didn't go often but whenever i went I loved it. It was everything the large chains weren't. It was a little more expensive BUT worth it. Now 10 years later this location just aint the same. Meat selection is poor. Fruit and vegetable selection is poor. Today i bought fresh brussel sprouts and what i thought was dirt turned out to be the sprouts going bad. I had to throw away at least half of what i bought. The Homewood location is MUCH better. Its as if this location doesn't care.

Yelp
There is something to be said for locally owned, smaller grocery stores. The staff is kind and helpful. They will walk you to the item that you are looking for rather than point. The small pharmacy staff is patient. You get a stamp card and after 5 prescriptions you receive a $10 gift card Nice deli and meat counter. Walt's is known for their produce. The variety isn't as large as a superstore and I do wish they wouldn't package it. The bakery has wonderful butter cookies. There is plenty of parking and easy access. Give Walt's try and download their app sales and coupons.

Yelp
Mopsie B. is on point... I agree. When I moved in this area, I received a coupon for $5 off of $50 so I made my way to Walts. I was so disappointed to see the store looked like it was in a time warp - the store has not been updated in ages. The food does not look fresh, the cashier are all over 70 yo and the prices appear to be higher than Jewel. I've only been in the store once - I did not make a purchase during my 1st and only visit. Drive a little further to Jewel in Homewood.

Yelp
Walking into this store is like going back into 1970! I kinda liked the feel of the place. All of the employees I personally interacted with were really cool. Some of the employees can be a little ghetto here. I've seen them arguing amongst themselves at the registers on who was going to help a customer take a cart outside. Anywho I was shopping for ingredients to make guacamole. While in the line the cashier working noticed what I was purchasing and asked me if I meant to get parsley instead of cilantro! What a good catch! She saved me from having to return and get the correct item, or making my guacamole completely wrong. I was so tired and not paying attention. Walt's has a nice selection of ready to eat foods available! Ribs, chicken, pastas. All kinds of things. I really enjoyed the bean salad. I will try a few more things here at Walt's. Until next time.....

Yelp
Every time I go here I find expired food on the shelves. Once I bought a few pizza pockets from the frozen food section only to realize all of them were more than 6 months past the expiration date! Went back the next week to return them and the the freezer box was still stacked the same expired food. Went back again 1 year later and tried the deli section. Big mistake! I bought a turkey sub and the meat was so old/dry, it was hard and chewy. Would have made a nice chew toy for my dog...if I had one.

Yelp
A coworker brought in pastries from Walt's - I have never had a better donut. It was amazing.

Yelp
Walt is a family owned grocery store. While it doesn't have as much selection as jewels it is a clean and neat grocery store. I suggest you go there if you need to run to the store quickly because many items are a little bit cheaper than jewels which is down the street

Yelp
I love shopping here. Manager Bill is friendly and helpful. Cashiers are very pleasant. I like the small town grocery store feel

Yelp
Having grown up in South Holland, and still living here now, Walt's has been, and continues to be my favorite grocery store in the area. Why, you ask? 1) Produce. In my opinion, Walt's has the best produce around. When I've been to Jewel (the second best), I've seen rotten apples sitting out. It also seems like they put the bad stuff "on sale". Walt's, on the other hand, has a reduced price rack where they put the produce that isn't quite right. Which, me being cheap, is great because I can get bruised apples, slightly brown bananas, etc. for super cheap and it doesn't make a difference most of the time. 2) Bakery. If you've never had a Walt's apple fritter, you need to. They are delicious! And at only 89 cents, pretty affordable too. They also have the 'reduced rack' for the bakery. Day old bread and donuts and whatnot. 3) The atmosphere. Some of the reviewers on here are complaining that it hasn't been updated. I'm pretty sure that's their draw: to have knowledgable employees, people that have been there awhile (although they do have younger employees as well), and an "old town" feel. 4) The whole "they charged me the wrong price" thing referred to in some of these reviews: I'm sorry, but every grocery store I've ever been to has done this. Sometimes the labels in the aisles are wrong, or the machine messes up the sale price. Whenever that happens to me (in ANY store), I look at the receipt and let the cashier know. Walt's is hardly the only grocery store that has done this before. 5) The expired food thing has never happened to me. Then again, I always look at dates before I buy the food. You can't blame the store for your reckless shopping habits, especially if you don't notice it until a week later! 6) Prices. I agree that some of the prices may be around the same price as Jewel. However, if you shop the sales, they come out pretty even. I'm not sure that the two stores are that distinguishable (and if price is that much of an issue, shop at Aldi down the street as I do for some ingredients). Anyway, I am a huge fan of Walt's, from the people to the produce, and I recommend it if you're looking for a customer service based trip with high quality produce and bakery.

Yelp
First some background--I am SHISH--Single and Happy In South Holland! I lived here for about 9 years then moved out for about two and a half years. Now I'm back and happier than ever. That being said you should know that I was never a real grocery shopper but now that times are tough I've gotten better at it and Walt's is my NFS (new favorite store). The food is alway fresh, the personnel is friendly and the prices are right. I especially love their bakery, deli and butcher shop. The butcher will not only suggest a cut of meat for you but tell you what he thinks is the best way to prepare it. I've done this twice and the guy was not wrong. I stop there once a week and look forward to the sales paper that's delivered to my home weekly. I've also check out the Walt's in Crete. It's much larger but just as nice. Don't pass this store up if you see one and need something. BTW--they also sell cooked food to go (fried chicken, ribs, pasta, potatoes, cobbler, etc), I rate that at 4 (out of 5) stars.

Yelp
I have read the reviews about Walt's. Many are pretty negative. Yes, Walts could update. Yes, we all know it's not good for us to eat bakery goods with all that sugar and color, but, this is the charm of this store. It is more convenient for me to shop closer to my job, but I do enjoy coming to Walts when I can. There is always a friendly woman in the isles. It seems her main job it just to be friendly and chat up the customers (yes, she is dusting the groceries, but I enjoy seeing her smile) Yes, sometimes customers like to write a check for some reason, but if that were my Mom or Dad, I would appreciate that the cashier does not rush them or make them feel uncomfortable. As a youngster, we had a Jewel in the community, but we always shopped the store around the corner with the sawdust on the floor. They knew our names.

Yelp
UPDATE: Things continue to go downhill...my mom went in twice in the last week for peaches that were advertised (twice!) as being 99 cents a pound. The first time, she was charged $2.99 a pound, and the second, $1.39. Last night, I went in for a box of pasta and some other random groceries and got in the express line (big mistake- the last time I did this, the person in front of me had about 25 items and wrote a check)...This time, the people had the correct 15 items but were so busy chatting up the ridiculous excuse for a cashier that they forgot to make out their check ahead of time. Result? It probably took 15+ minutes for them to write it up, to find one working I.D. and for the cashier to make it go through the little machine. Why do grocery stores even still accept checks, particularly in the express lane?? I totally feel like this store is Mayberry, with a bunch of low IQ yahoos running the show to boot. ARGH!!

Yelp
I love shopping at Walt's Overall. That being said, I have two issues first, The Ground Chuck. I would only purchase here, I loved their Ground Chuck & Beef. This year, I have purchased and the meat looks Fresh in the package but when I get home there is what obviously is old meat. "Grey and unappetizing." I have questioned the Manager about this and he stated that sometimes when the Air hits the Meat it causes that. Several packages later, I am still experiencing that with the Meat so I stopped purchasing it there. I purchase Ground Chuck from Wal Marts and from a Fresh Meat Market and have never experienced the "Graying Inside Meat." I also note that some produce is going bad but to their credit when asked if they have fresher Lettuce, Green Beans they are always very accommodating and bring out more. I will continue to be a Customer, I Love their Fruit Selection too and the fact they are always willing to correct a wrong.

Yelp
I recently placed an order for 72 pieces of Fried Chicken with Walt's in South Holland for a company party. The chicken was great the staff was very helpful . When I picked the chicken up it was ready and hot and Jan in the Deli department was very helpful. Everyone here at Chicago Wilcox kept saying were did you get this chicken it's great. I would say that any one that lives with in driving distance from a Walts will be placing there party orders with Walts.
