The Best Breakfast and Brunch Restaurants in Eugene, Oregon | Eater Portland

"A Whiteaker fixture for more than two decades, Wandering Goat is an excellent option for folks seeking out an exclusively vegan pastry selection and a coffee. The menu includes a regular rotation of buns, cookies, and scones in seasonal flavors as well as vegan biscuits and gravy. The cafe offers both indoor and outdoor seating and is delightfully Wi-Fi-free for folks who want to disconnect for a bit. Diners can also add to the breakfast experience by placing an order with resident parking lot food cart, Mother’s House." - Brenna Houck

Love the vibes and all the seating indoor and outdoor! Got their chai and cinnamon roll. The cinnamon roll was top notch I just wish the chai had more spice. They also have local artist perform every once in a while! Overall, will be coming back to try their coffee beans and catch a show!

Google
Was lovely once again, music is chill vibe . Food pumpkin bread was delicious with my cafe au lait. Drink Could’ve had an extra shot for a little more coffee flavor but was good. No sugar needed barista steams milk to almost Carmel the milk sugars! Must come back again soon!

Amy

Google
Numerous people touted they have the best beans in Eugene, and I’d have to agree! We tried the salted maple latte, and a vanilla latte, and both were well crafted. The maple latte tasted best when the salt hadn’t dissolved yet, which makes me think I should just sprinkle salt on all my lattes now. Friendly vibes, funny yelp reviews posted on the wall, and they bake all their items in house. Plenty of bike parking located right outside.

Google
Wandering Goat roasts my favorite coffee in Eugene! The coffee shop itself is full of life. A great place to get into a conversation or sit by yourself with your favorite brew. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Eugene.

Google
This is the best coffee shop in Eugene, HANDS DOWN. The baristas are all so friendly and highly skilled. The vibe is the best part, I grew up in Eugene and to say this place is a cornerstone would be selling it short. Never change Wandering Goat, never change.

Love the artsy funk and beautiful plants in this place!! Dope staff, great coffee and a rebel spirit. I'm in love!!

Google
My order consisted of biscuits and gravy, a chocolate hazelnut scone, and a twelve-ounce mocha. The coffee and scone were delicious; the biscuits and gravy appeared appetizing, although I did not partake as they were intended for my husband, who reported that they were excellent. The staff were really friendly and polite. They work extremely patient when waiting on me to choose something because this was my first time.

Google
Nice place for a cup of good coffee. Loved the Marty Robbins' music playing. Mocha was not my favorite but good - a tiny bit more chocolate would be perfect.

Yelp
Wandering Goat has my favorite coffee. Their borgia is so good! I also love their vegan biscuits and gravy. The ambience has changed little over the years. This is a quiet place to go if you are looking for for a place to sit and read or get work done. Be aware that they do not have WiFi so plan accordingly.

Yelp
Spacious, clean, friendly staff, good prices and options. Pastry was nice (cinnamon roll & blackberry almond scone for the wife). They don't offer wifi which is not an issue just a mention. Nice little eclectic local coffee shop. Has a punk rock new age feel with soft techno/trance music. It's not loud it's a calming but not put you to sleep music. Really a fun vibe worth the trip if you are in Eugene. It has indoor and outdoor seating.

Yelp
It is consistently one of the best coffee places around. One of my first memories of Eugene almost 20 years ago was stumbling into Wandering Goat, and a punk concert broke out. It was awesome! Today, I sat outside in the sun and had an iced brown sugar spice almond milk latte, and it was perfection! I've had their vegan biscuits and gravy in the past, and its awesome! Pro tip: go to Mothers food cart right next door and grab one of the best breakfast sandwiches around.

Yelp
While my husband was grabbing some beer at Oakshire, I stopped in here because I heard they had loose leaf tea. They also have a really impressive coffee selection. The owner, Aaron, was super knowledgeable and was very helpful with all of my questions. I appreciate how they store their tea in airtight opague canisters to keep it fresh. They had a lot of variety for tea considering it is a coffee-focused place. I also got the drip coffee to try and it was very nice too! Didn't try the vegan pastries but maybe next time. There are a few food trucks around if you want a more hearty meal. I do wish there was inside seating and hopefully they will bring it back soon. In the meantime there is a fair amount of seating outside.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the sense of humor, friendliness and helpful suggestions here. I ended up getting the cold brew that was spot on with just the right about of richness yet smooth enough to drink black. I got a snickerdoodle cookie to go with-to die for; as well as a day old ginger cookie that was excellent the next day - so 2 days old! My friend got a lovely looking chai that she said was tasty as well. This used to be a place I'd come to study in graduate school, and I saw a few students dotted throughout the inside, along with others from all walks of life. Now, 8 years later (had it really been that long?!), it was the perfect spot to meet up with an old friend-loved the music they played too. Keep it up Goat!

Yelp
I tried the mocha with orange zest. It was a delicious adventure! The earl grey cookie was also very yummy. The vibe was super chill here and I was able to do some journaling.

Yelp
Love this place! Super tasty single origin coffee. Staff is super nice, too. I haven't tried their pastries but they look great!

Yelp
I've had Wandering Goat on my list for a while and finally stopped by recently. I just ordered by the walk up window (couldn't tell if there was actually an indoor area open?) and there is a small parking lot available with about 4 spaces on the side of the railroad tracks. WG offers a variety of milk alternatives and sweet and savory pastry options (some vegan), and a scattering of outdoor tables. One of their coffee specials sounded appealing to me ("Borgia" - homemade chocolate sauce + orange peel) and it was smooth and delicious and I loved the hint of orange. Reminded me of one of those chocolate oranges you see around Christmas but with a coffee kick! I only got an 8 oz. ($5) but I could see it being too sweet /heavy in a much larger size.

Yelp
As a coffee lover and bean collector, Wandering Goat Coffee is one of my top picks. Even though I haven't visited the location in person, I drink their coffee almost every day. I love their variety of flavor profiles, and they always seem to come out with new flavors. I look forward to visiting the coffee shop soon. Thanks for making some of the best beans I've found! I absolutely love the artwork on their packaging!

Taylor D.

Yelp
Really enjoyed walking up and grabbing a quick $3 large drip coffee that rivaled some pour overs I've had! Not to mention ruin it was a Friday after 5, and all the food trucks were open plus some live music. The skatepark is also nearby if that's your jam. Definitely will be coming a common hotspot for me!

Michael E.

Yelp
I had the chance to try multiple roasts and preparations this past week. Staff were wonderful, coffee was excellent. Go and enjoy a great cup!

Yelp
It isn't quite the same since pandemic, but W.G. is still the best place to quickly grab coffee and vegan biscuits & gravy whenever I visit Eugene. Places like this are what makes the Whit the city's most interesting neighborhood.

Yelp
Fantastic place to grab a cup of coffee or specialty espresso. We got the Borgia (orange chocolate flavor) and brown sugar latte both were amazing. Found out about this coffee shop because we saw their coffee in a local grocery store and loved the packaging. Highly recommend checking them out.
google avatar

Yelp
Would like to give a review or thumbs up, but at 12:30pm on a rainy day the inside was closed. We wanted to get out of the rain. I hate to give a 1 star but unable to todY.
google avatar

Yelp
Feeling generous today--as I am forced to shiver outside. For a long time now, Wandering Goat has no longer allowed customers inside. We are relegated to five outdoor picnic tables along the sidewalk. This is a strange place. An unwelcoming vibe. As an earlier reviewer wrote, the wait staff here always seem to be thinking "What are you doing here?" And I too wonder the same. Maybe it's a better place to wait on an oil change than a car repair shop's lounge. But other than that, I'll pass. Wish I'd worn a coat.
google avatar

Yelp
I was not impressed with a place where you can not sit down to enjoy your cup of coffee. The brew is okay, but I need to be able to sit down and enjoy my coffee with a nice pastry or breakfast item that is home made.

Enricka S.

Yelp
Very friendly service! Not a sit down inside place but there are covered benches outside for you to sit and enjoy thier delicious coffee!

Yelp
This is the first coffee shop I came to when I visited Oregon my first time and I was very underwhelmed. It's kind of funny because they have their horrible Yelp reviews on the walls....if this tells you anything. The vibes were very Eugene if you're looking for that. The coffee was disgusting though. The taste was just not good and the girl I was with there didn't like it either. So, I write this not to get on the wall of bad yelp reviews, but to tell you to go literally anywhere else for a good cup of coffee.

Sunny K.

Yelp
A friend took me to Wandering Goat as I like coffee, saying that it is one of the best coffee shops in Eugene. We ordered Americano. I was very disappointed that it was not what I expected. it was just lukewarm old tasteless coffee, not piping hot java made with espresso shots. I regret not asking for refund or another cup. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

CJ B.

Yelp
Love this place Kind Good coffee Live music Hope it fully opens soon ...............

Yelp
It's hard to convey how surreal and bad the customer service experience is here. Every time I come, I'm reminded why it's been so long since the last time. The feeling is "wtf are YOU doing here", and I again have to wonder why indeed AM I here? Just go anywhere else and have a normal and sane interaction. It's a shame because the coffee is excellent. But there's no shortage of good coffee in the PNW.

Yelp
Popular and trendy coffee spot with a reputation that stands strong. Stayed nearby at an airbnb and checked Yelp for a coffee shop within walking distance. Almost went to another shop, but got lost on back roads and looked this one up second. Glad I did because the coffee here is epic. Although the spot is randomly in an industrial area and literally on the other side of the train tracks, the journey is very worth it. It shares the corner with another spot, and can easily be missed. As you go in there is nothing special or really memorable except this stuffed head of a goat on the wall adjacent to the counter. They have a wide selection of coffee, snacks, teas, and house-made syrups. I'd heard about the Borgia (mocha with orange zest) and decided to get that. Superb and nuanced latte that I feel the rest of the world is missing out on. If you're ever in Eugene (the only place you can get this), definitely hit this place up.

Yelp
Great locals coffee shop. Looks like they make their own muffins and scones. Went early in the morning. We felt like we were putting the employees out and bothering them by ordering coffee and a muffin. One never even turned around and the other was somewhere in Jamaica. Didn't say two words, nor respond when we said thank you. First time there. Recommended by a friend. Wouldn't go out of my way to go back. There is a Dutch Brothers right next to our hotel. We could hear the gals playing fun music and laughing as we got into our car to go to the grumpy goat. The food case was almost empty. It was great to see another gal using her bare hand to put new food into the case, rub her nose and touch the trash with the same hands, yum! Not planning on going back.

Yelp
If you ever WANDER in here???? Please try the cookies.. this sugared molasses cookie is fricken DEVINE.. the wife got a Chai tea, which she loved. I got a large mocha with 2 add shots, DE-LIC-IOUS.... my son got a chz begal.. also great... THANK YOU.....

Yelp
Aside from the somewhat creepy walk to get here, I enjoyed this coffery very much. It's very hipster/grunge, with interesting characters both behind the counter and patrons sitting in one of the various tables inside or out. It's not in a location near the central downtown area so you have to be committed if you want to try it, although the walk from voodoo donuts was only about 20 minutes. I had a pretty darn good vanilla latte and I'd come back again for surr.

Yelp
No other hangout in Eugene measures up to The Goat! Great coffee Friendly quirky baristas, responsiveness is great I like the pay-forward option and use it every time I come, which is - sadly - only twice a year. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Yelp
Best coffee - equals or betters any I have had in roasters and coffee shops from Melbourne to San Francisco and more. The staff are meticulous about their brews, checking for quality of pour. Vegan bakery offerings. The spicy cheese bagel is my favorite. Openings since Covid have been restrictive. I buy the coffee to bring home as well. It is the best I can find for my taste.

Steph H.

Yelp
Brown sugar spice latte was just the right level of sweetness. I will have to try their regular latte next time. The peach turnover was super crisp and flaky and exceeded my expectations.
google avatar

Yelp
I visit this place every time I would travel through Eugene. But the service has gone down immensely. They make you feel like they're doing you a favor. Also they took this Covid crap and just gone crazy with it. The biscuits that I always order tasted terrible this time. It's sad because it used to be such a vibrant place. Bring the freedom loving hippies back!
google avatar

Tricia K.

Yelp
Perfect mocha every time. Friendly staff. Grungy hipster vibe. Doughnut day. What more could one want in a coffee shop? I especially love that they use organic milk and encourage folks to bring their reusable travel containers by charging for to-go cups. I'm baffled by the reviews that cite poor service and high prices - it hasn't been my experience.
google avatar

Amanda D.

Yelp
I used to come here because they had $5 full order vegan biscuits and gravy. Now it's $7. I won't come out of my way anymore. Is understand a small increase in price, but that's really disappointing. Also not a great place to come if you have work to do unless you have noise cancelling ear phones as they play really loud and depressing metal music most of the time. It's too bad, I used to come here all the time for their full vegan menu. Bummed.

Yelp
I'd heard (and read) great things about the coffee at Wandering Goat Cafe so I was looking forward to visiting when we were in Eugene. First things first, the coffee was great! I had the Borgia (mocha with orange zest) and it was exceptional. I would drink this everyday if I could! Unfortunately, that where the goodness ends. We got ourselves a broccoli-cheese puff and half an order of biscuits and gravy. Both dishes were served cold to us with no offer to reheat them. When my husband requested the staff to reheat the puff, they directed him to a toaster where he could heat it up himself! Obviously we couldn't dump the biscuits and gravy in the toaster, and trust me, cold, rock-hard biscuits (and rather salty gravy) are no fun to eat! Also, the puff was super oily, although I did like the combination of broccoli and cheese. Mostly, I just did not understand the dismissive attitude of the staff especially since the cafe was not particularly crowded. In short, if you must come here, stick to the coffee. The food and service are disappointing.

Yelp
Overall, I really like Wandering Goat. I like coming here for a simple cup of coffee or sometimes I will splurge and get a fancy borgia (espresso, chocolate, orange zest, and steamed milk). Very casual, hippie vibe consistent with the Whitaker neighborhood location. I am often the one that stands out in the hippie crowd here but it doesn't bother me in the slightest. Staff is usually helpful, but I am not surprised to see some yelp reviews mention feeling that the staff was dismissive or unhelpful. The main food item that we purchase every single time is the seedy bagel. Man, I've never seen so many seeds on one bagel! It is delicious. They place your bagel in a toaster near the cashier's area and it is expected that you pick up your own bagel, no table service/delivery. Cream cheese is extra (as are to-go cups). My father-in-law who lives out of state often mentions this bagel to us in hopes of getting a fresh one delivered to him. Another item I purchase often is the biscuits and gravy. This item isn't always consistently good, sometimes the biscuit is too dense and dry, sometimes the gravy isn't hot enough, even though it is flavorful. They have some really cool Wandering Goat swag that they sell (t-shirts, coffee mugs, stickers, coffee equipment, etc) as well as bagged coffee beans (whole or ground). We often purchase these coffee bags as presents whenever we visit home and they are a big hit. Interior is pretty grungy, but overall adequate. It isn't comfortable enough for me to bring my laptop to do work for long periods of time. The outdoor seating is lovely when the weather is nice. Come here for a classic Eugene coffee experience!

Yelp
I had my first macchiato EVER here as well as food I NEVER eat well now almost never lol - biscuits with mushroom gravy! VEGAN of course The whole philosophy of this place is everything I dreamt this little college town would be about and I'm soooo glad I picked this place to come support and enjoy. Who knows, maybe this coffee shop that people actually are hanging out in and having intelligent conversations might help me decide to come live here for a while! Oh and Bev is AWESOME! She was super friendly and answered all my questions plus made me a bomb little espresso drink

Yelp
We don't fit in. Them - hipster, dark and bohemian. Mr. B and Me - cute little old couple. But why should that stop me? This speaks of good coffee. I like bohemian. I like this place. If you want to experience of a real coffee house feel, come here. Being close to the university you will find a cross section of suits and starving student types, curled up using the free wi fi and enjoying pastries and vegan foods. So Oregonian! They roast their own beans and bake their own pastries. You can peer in the large picture windows towards the back where the magic happens. Very good, friendly vibes. We came here because they are a roastery, but ended up sitting while we people watched and each drank a cup. They special made me a cup of Sumatra, my usual choice, but were brewing Bolivian today. Bolivian won the prize. Two bags of beans go home with us. Ahhh. My car smells divine, all the way back to So Cal. Next time I may indulge in a cup of their custom made Chai with 14 spices. We'll definitely come back.

Yelp
If you listen to this while you read thus review, it will be as if you were in this great little coffee house with me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvdyu0bYOL8&NR=1&feature=fvwp Because this tune was playing on the sound system while I waited on my order of really good, bold, very hot black coffee to be poured to go. While I waited I enjoyed free entertainment from the cute staff behind the service bar who were literally dancing along to the music, just as if they belonged in the associated music video, while they prepared coffee orders. Pretty fun...in particular since none of them were likely born when the song debuted! (When was it...1985?) Thanks to Yeeps who posted reviews for my husband and me to know about Wandering Goat when we visited Eugene. Based on this first experience we're fans - of the coffee, of the vibe and of the service. We would be regular customers if we lived in Eugene. We're looking forward to going back again for more great coffee and next time ordering "for here" to soak up the ambiance. Although a bit off the beaten path in an aging light industrial area, this really had a neighborhood-place feel and all people are welcome here vibe inside and out. As in outside a couple of guys were bundled up for the 42 degree weather and playing checkers at a table near the sidewalk with their coffee along side. As in inside where an older couple was playing a board game, Parcheesi maybe, a group of younger men in work attire were engaged in conversation punctuated by lots laughter, and other people were enjoying beverages and breakfast goodies and chatting or reading books. We were tempted to blow off our schedule an take a seat and bask in the happy vibe of the place as we sipped the excellent coffee. Next time. For sure there will be a next time. And maybe another star to go with it if the food is on par with the great coffee and vibe!

Yelp
Wandering Goat definitely belongs in this neighborhood. The casual charm it has makes me happy that it's my neighborhood go-to coffee spot. Parking can be a bit limited but there's a lot down the street. I love their homemade oatmeal here. It's perfectly sweetened and every bite was warm and filling. Their scones are good too! We also had a savory bagel that was delicious and almost pizza like. Their coffee is on point and they make a mean chai latte. There is indoor and outdoor seating or you can grab your goods to go. They have live music here sometimes which I hope to check out sometime. The staff were friendly and answered all of my questions with a smile. The prices here are a little steep but for the quality and consistency I don't mind it when I have the money to spend but personally can't make this my everyday stop unless it's for that oatmeal!

Yelp
Great coffee place with some interesting music and art performances My first visit and the dirty chai tea was great and some kind of trash metal performance , heavy and noisy, not my cup of tea but alrite !!! This place rocks

Yelp
Delicious coffee and quick service. I hear it's a locals favorite so I went there when I left town. I'll go back there again on my next trip to Eugene.

Andrew S.

Yelp
Great coffee! They have a walk up window and outdoor seating. Very smooth latte. We got a fresh blackberry scone that was perfect. We are definitely coming back!

Charles D.

Yelp
Very aggressive strong roast. This place seems to polarize people. The atmosphere was kind of coffee for the death metal crowd. It could have just been the vibe for that moment on that day. Decent baked goods. Did not get the impression they were made in house. My latte had strong flavor with notes tending toward the bitter. I do not think I am an edgy enough person for this place. I felt like how Tucker Carlson might feel at an Iron Maiden concert.
google avatar

Brooke B.

Yelp
This coffee shop is a little off the beaten path but totally worth it. They have lots of space for working and a fun, quirky atmosphere. Fantastic coffee! Their pastries looked delicious but I was full when I stopped in so will need to go back.
google avatar

Yvonne C.

Yelp
We paid $5 for an incredibly tiny cup of oatmeal and $4.75 (?) for a peanut butter bar. Their food seemed very overpriced for the portions.
google avatar

Anna T.

Yelp
The beer chz biscuits and gravy is amazing!! I love the vegan options here and the tea is great too
google avatar

Bill J.

Yelp
Wandering Goat is our favorite place to get coffee. The atmosphere and customers are a bit funky. Their coffee is excellent, but they make their coffee drinks strong. Small drinks have two shots and large ones have four, so be prepared for the buzz. This day we were after a pound of Chupacabara Espresso Roast and some lattes. My wife decided two shots was too much so she tried their Chai Tea Latte and found it nothing special. I had a quad shot large latte and it was smooth and good. We have not tried any of their goodies, which all seem to be vegan.
google avatar

Heather J.

Yelp
I have to say it! I love the goat great coffee, but...could be a little cleaner.just a hint to the baker, you might not want a big window to ur kitchen if your going to be touching food then your face, or your hair, without washing your hands. Thanks much

Yelp
A friend highly recommended this coffee shop and told me I had to check it out during my week in Eugene. Knowing that they opened early, I went around 6:30 a.m. to check out the coffee shop ... and hoped that I would be able to find it without any problems and find parking, too. I don't know Eugene really well, but the coffee shop seemed to be in a more industrial area. I probably wouldn't go here really late at night by myself, but the sun was beginning to peek out from between the clouds by the time I got there, and I ended up finding parking really close to Wandering Goat. While my friend raved about those garlic cheese bagels, I ended up not getting anything for breakfast during my visit. I was tempted, though, by the bagels and the assortment of pastries in the display case. But, I decided to just get coffee during this visit and figured I would try some of the baked goods during another visit. The two girls working were really helpful and it was evident that there were some regular customers ahead of me, who had "usual" orders and seemed familiar with the menu. I was just glad that the coffee shop wasn't too crowded, there was ample seating space and my order came out really quickly. Here's what I got: "Mocha": Mochas tend to be my go-to order (especially when I'm trying out a new coffee spot) because I know they have chocolate and I'm pretty satisfied with it every time. I was just glad there was both almond milk/soy that I could substitute in my mocha. I really like how there's an assortment of drink sizes here at Wandering Goat. Because it was cooler, I decided to order my drink hot and therefore settled for a 12 oz. cup (it also comes in 8, 16 and 20 oz. sizes). If I were getting a cold drink, I probably would have opted for the 16 oz. because liquid chocolate disappears so quickly! But, being that my drink was hot, the 12 oz. size was absolutely perfect. I really liked the velvety taste of my mocha and the latte art was on point. "Cheddar Bagels": I really do want to try one of these cheddar bagels because I love cheese and the bagels looked delicious. You can even have it toasted if you're planning to dine-in. I really wanted to try one, but I had already eaten breakfast by this time so I just got coffee. Definitely want to return here to try one of those bagels. Bagels are not my favorite when it comes to breakfast food, but for this cheesy option, I would have to make an exception. "Peanut Butter Bar": When I asked the girl what was in the peanut butter bar, she told me it was a mix of peanut butter, chocolate and Rice Krispies. I love peanut butter and chocolate, so thinking back to my visit, I must have had extreme self control to not get one. If I'm in the mood for something sweet during my next Wandering Goat visit, this treat would be first up on my list. "Biscuits and Gravy": Besides the cheddar bagel, this is a popular breakfast option, according to the girl behind the counter. She said that if people don't want an entire bagel, they often get the garlic cheddar biscuits and pair it with gravy. Those looked delicious as well, so I anticipate trying them one day.

Yelp
Wandering Goat roasts its own beans, which it supplies to stores and restaurants around town. I have been buying their beans for years, they are hands down my favorite beans for making pour-overs and espresso at home. I've explored some of their blends and single-origin coffees, but come back to their flagship Hair of the Goat blend - you can't go wrong with it. They also make superb espresso drinks in the shop. When I stop in I usually get a cappuccino, which they make traditionally sized (5.5 ounces) and consistently excellent, with a thick and rich micro foam - the baristas know what they're doing. I've always experienced the service to be professional and attentive, though sometimes a little matter-of-fact. The coffeeshop is in what has historically been an industrial part of the Whiteaker neighborhood, but the surrounding block is slowly changing as bars and restaurants crop up. The shop still has a pretty humble, hip-but-not-fancy vibe reflecting its origins and can feel a little rough around the edges, but comfortably so. The clientele is a mix of punks, hippies, hipsters, and boring people like me. If tattoos make you uncomfortable, you should probably get your drink to go - but do get it.

Yelp
Disgusting food and even more disgusting attitudes from the staff. Ordered biscuits and gravy, which my husband took a bite of, then spit it out. Asked for my money back and got a little attitude and a rude comment. "You shouldn't order biscuits and gravy if you don't know that you like it", she says. The 2nd barista looked at me and said IT'S VEGAN! I get that, but vegan doesn't have to equal absolute trash. The coffee was actually, not too bad, but I would never return to The Wandering Goat because the baristas have serious attitude problems.
