Remote Hotels That Reward a Long Journey

"Arriving at Wanosato feels nothing less than magical. You ascend by train through the mountains to the town of Takayama, a settlement that took shape in the 16th century and remained, for many years, wonderfully isolated due to its high elevation and distance from Japan’s population centers. That feeling is only amplified at the 160-year-old ryokan itself, folded as it is into the forest well outside of town." - The MICHELIN Guide

Wanosato (Takayama, Gifu Prefecture) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The roofs of the minka (traditional guesthouses built to resemble praying hands) may be covered in lichen, some of the walls may be made of pressed earth, and the floors and ceilings may have uncut tree trunks running straight through them, but don’t get the wrong idea; though the illusion of sleeping in the woods is persuasive, the comforts of Wanosato are as civilized as they come. This is the natural world as we wish it could be: all the lush greens, the fresh mountain air, a gurgling river, the solitude and the tranquility, none of that pesky dirt to smudge up the composition. Unless, that is, we count the timbers rendered a gleaming obsidian black by years of smoke from the communal hearth at the center of the ryokan." - Tablet Hotels

We stayed two nights at Wanasato and it was great. The room was huge with great views on the river and a nice bathroom. The Japnese style dinners were excellent (be ready for some unusual tastes) and the service was perfect. Private access to the onsen was great. Overall a great experience. On the improvement side, the exterior of the ryokan is disappointing and the garden could be better maintained.

My wife and I stayed here for one night. The friendly staff, the environment and the stay were excellent. We both would have liked to stay longer. We were welcomed with a small meal and some tea, kimonos were offered to us and in the evening, after a long bath in the hotel's own onsen, there was a multi-course menu. The room had a wonderful view of the Miyagawa River. This ryokan is a must for any guest seeking peace and quiet. I think I could write a whole essay about how much we enjoyed it here, but that's it for now. For me, it was definitely a highlight of my trip and definitely worth a visit. Unconditionally 5/5 stars.

Set in a really remote, lovely setting, this hotel felt like I was living in Japan of the past. They have clearly tried to kept the essence of the ryokan alive with things like a communal fire by the entrance, and basic (but refurbished) interior design. Really nice private onsens, food (Japanese) wasn’t our preferred type (it was shabu-shabu and sukiyaki) but the quality was great. The loveliest staff too! The only issue was we went in the spring season and there were lots of insects in our room. Would recommend for sure

We stayed here last summer and still talk about this wonderful place frequently. The location is beautiful and serene, the staff are incredible kind and attentive and the meal was amazing! Try everything! We really enjoyed chatting with Mr. Norio Nakashima, who was so entertaining and kind despite us only understanding about 20 words in each other's languages.

This is an exceptional ryokan dedicated to tradition even by the standards of a traditional ryokan. We stayed there this past April. A felllow guest who was spending six weeks travelling the country in luxury kept on using the word "authentic": a word I avoid. I can't think of a better one. The staff is attentive, and as they often cater to western tourists, are very patient. The food is excellent . We planned much of our itenrary around Wanosato and continued south on the scenic railway - I'm glad we did.

Our stay at Wanosato was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel incredibly welcome with their warm hospitality and attention to detail. The room was luxurious and spotless. The Kaiseki Hida beef dinner was one of the best meals of our trip. If you are lucky, stick around after dinner and enjoy local sake and a magic show by the fire. The onsen was also wonderful to relax in after a long day of sightseeing. If you want to experience Japanese hospitality at its finest, book this place!

Food was one of the best I’ve had for ryokans. The view from the room was so beautiful. Onsen was amazing with view over the snowy forest and river bank. The staff was also lovely. We loved the hot sake by the fireplace at night. Had a lovely chat with a Japanese couple. This was definitely an unforgettable ryokan for us

had a wonderful 2 days stay at this beautiful resort. Excellent Michelin level dinner and friendly service staffs. Had very much enjoyed the sake before dinner by the nice traditional fireplace and also after dinner warm sake with the ex-owner. Highly recommended.
