"The restaurant space home to noodle-and-rice mainstay Wares is on the market. Owner Johanna Ware is hoping to close the NE Sandy restaurant, focusing exclusively on her critically acclaimed flagship Smallwares. Ware decided to give up her casual counter-service spot for her own mental health. A year after reopening Smallwares, her original restaurant, the chef says balancing both businesses has been a strain. “Originally, I didn’t want to say, ‘I’m closing my place,’ but fuck it, I know my food is good,” Ware says. “It’s just too much... I’m just over my limit with stress.” The restaurant hasn’t closed yet — in fact, there’s no closing date on the books so far. Ware and her tiny team are holding out until she finds a new tenant for the space, someone to inherit her equipment and the tiny restaurant counter within NE Sandy’s Zipper building." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

The food is delicious, though they have a fairly limited menu. I had the 'burger' special, which had a patty made of pork and Chinese sausage, with peanut sauce, fish sauce, slaw, pickles, and crunchy noodles. The noodles were a revelation - I'd have this again in a heartbeat, so I think I'm doomed to disappointment on future visits, since this was a special, and I'd never count on it being available again. My dining companions were very impressed by the chicken ramen and the kale bowl.

Super service. Came here for burger week and their asian inspired burger was delicious. Also had their french girl mixed drink which was very interesting!

Eccentric excellent melange of Asian flavors with standout basics. The menu is rotating seasonally and order the specials.

Love this place. The rice bowl is so good especially with all the additions piled on! The yuzu miso is my favorite. Ohhhhh and the kimchi is sooooo good. It has the perfect zing to it without it being "too zingy." Ya know?

I’d like to preface by saying I mostly don’t like salad. So I never order salad. Today, I did it. I ordered a salad. And I photographed the results.

Amazing little gem. Food was a little pricey for the serving size, but I know I'll come back here because the fried shrimp was so insanely good. The octopus salad I had was also amazing, and the octopus was really tender and prepared well. Only gripe is I wish there was more on my plate!

I was in Portland a few nights ago to see some friends, and they highly recommended this place knowing that I'm hesitant--no, downright frightened actually-- to try new kinds of food. I'm a southern girl. Anyway we were really fortunate with our server Joshua who seemed to know exactly what I wanted! I initially ordered this mango drink, and when I wasnt enthused about it's overpowering potpourri flavor, Joshua steered me and my friends toward the wine menu and helped us pick out a few drinks that were much more our style. He also suggested this awesome sake for one of my friends who doesn't like wine! I know we asked a lot of dumb questions but he was courteous and attentive throughout. I took his advice and had the fried kale and scallops, which were delicious! If you're looking for a restaurant with unique, quality food and great service with knowledgeable staff, I recommend this place. Also, it would be great for parties--we enjoyed the ambiance and being able to watch the action in the kitchen at the Chef's counter!

Drink menu was fairly deep and interesting. Food menu seemed the same. Fried kale has great texture, but was overdressed with fish sauce and too salty. Dan dan noodles were similarly over seasoned. Great concept, heavy handed seasonings really detracted from the meal.
