50 Best Restaurants in India, From Kasauli to Kolkata | Condé Nast Traveler

"Wasabi by Morimoto has remained a steady Japanese fine-dining pillar in Mumbai for nearly two decades: white-fish carpaccio, black cod miso, Wasabi crème brûlée and sushi/sashimi flown from Japan sit in a minimalist room with sea views and an extensive sake and Japanese whisky list, exemplifying consistency and technical exactitude." - Karina Acharya

The outer-first-impression of Wasabi by Morimoto blends understated elegance and exclusivity: housed inside the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel (opposite Gateway of India), a short glass-and-steel lift or red-staircase transports you from the hotel lobby up to this refined Japanese dining space. Guests seated near windows often enjoy partial views of the waterfront or Gateway, enhancing the ambiance. The décor is minimalist yet chic — subtle nods to Japanese aesthetics, with cherry-blossom motifs and a warm, muted interior rather than flashy opulence.

We dined at Wasabi with high expectations, given the restaurant’s reputation and its location within the Taj Mahal Palace. Unfortunately, the experience fell short on multiple fronts. Our reservation was originally for two guests. Upon arrival, the team kindly agreed to accommodate a third, which we appreciated. However, after we were already seated, we were asked to move tables and were eventually relocated to the bar area. Being moved mid-dinner was unexpected and disruptive, and not something one would expect at this level of dining. Service throughout the evening was inconsistent. We were not provided with a cocktail menu, and overall attentiveness was lacking. The pacing felt rushed and disorganized rather than considered. The food itself was below average and did not reflect the quality or finesse typically associated with Wasabi. Combined with the service issues, the overall experience felt closer to a generic high-end mall restaurant than a flagship dining destination within a heritage luxury hotel. This review is shared with disappointment rather than anger, as the setting and brand promise much more than what was delivered during our visit.

I can assure you that this place serves authentic and the BEST Sushis in Mumbai for sure. Just loved each of them. Plus the view surely looks amazing. Wonderful service Too.

First, yes it is expensive. Second, service is very good, attentive and knowledgeable. We liked most of the dishes except the salmon sushi which was just ok. The Yurine mousse was divine. A great experience.

My first real introduction to Japanese food. I am so glad we came here instead of going to my favourite Italian restaurant... We had sushi and a sort of white asparagus (you can tell I am a total newbie) with a really delicious gravy. A salad that the chef had made for the president of the US (I added mushrooms and it tasted Divine)... Am sure the president didn't get mushrooms with his salad. They surprised us with a totally decadent rich dark chocolate cake with hints of raspberry in it. It was my birthday and this was a brilliant lunch. We sat by the window and we should have had a view of the sea... But the building was undergoing construction so that was obscured. The music was horrible and they did shut it off for a few minutes when we requested... But put it back on... That was the only thing that spoilt a lovely afternoon out... But the food was so good, I couldn't give them a 4 star rating. It has to be a full 5! Am I coming back here? Yes. Most definitely!

One of the best Japanese restaurants in town although a little overpriced. Its a must try but only a once try kind of a restaurant. Except the rock shrimp tempura which wasn't that great in terms of taste none of the dishes justify their price when it comes to the portion or the lack of it. The spicy angel shrimp sushi which is their take on prawn tempura sushi with a different sauce which came recommended by the server is a must try but the portion is a little underwhelming. The king crab robatayaki was good but neither the the taste nor the portion justify the price. The dessert which again came recommended by the server was the highlight of the night. I would recommend going to the restaurant even if its just to try the dessert.

Fantastic japanese cuisine with service to back it up. The chefs are well trained and masters at what they do as is evident by the presentation and detail. Fresh wasabi is quite rare at a Japanese restaurant but it’s served here fresh at your table side, ground on shark skin as is traditional. I would stay away from saucy dishes and just focus on the fish and rice and never be dissapointed here.

After reading many good reviews and recommendations, we came to Wasabi with very high expectations, but the whole dinning experience was very disappointing, I suggest if you are Asian or foodie who has been to other countries and tried Japanese food, don't waste your money here. We ordered 2 non-veg omasake, 2 soft beverages, 1 appetizer and 1 sushi, combination of omasake was a tragedy— heavy appetizers, everything was dipped in strong sauce, mayonnaise and Jalapeños on top, after thick starters they served light flavor nigiri sushi— your palate are already tired at this time, the mushroom rice and dessert are ok, but can't smooth our bad feeling, it’s the fusion Japanese cuisine that caters to foreigner taste, the whole dinner cost around INR 25,000, you will definitely have better options in Mumbai, especially Mumbai has bunch of fresh seafood can choose. Maybe because Wasabi is located in Taj Palace thus it’s so overpriced, but even more disappointed to have food of this quality under this shiny brand. And one more thing to note, you can’t even see gate way of India in the night, there’s only dark outside, they don't maintain the sights like others around the world.
