Chicago restaurant and bar closures for 2021 | Eater Chicago

"An all-you-can-eat sushi spot that operated for a decade before permanently closing in early May; the restaurant shared ownership with another longtime local noodle and sushi operation that had previously closed." - Naomi Waxman

We came in for lunch today and had Jackie as our waitress. She was amazing, on point, very fast and has a fun personality! We sat outside because I felt the restaurant is a little narrow and dark, for my taste. Every item we tried was delicious. The kids noodles were very flavorful. We loved the cream cheese and baked salmon sushi. The fried dumplings were also delightful. I would say, the only major negative was that one of the staff members came out and proceeded to smoke inches away from our table, and me and my children had to inhale his cigarette smoke. Smoking at any business is completely unprofessional, but doing it at a restaurant while you have patrons Eating is really gross especially around a table full of children.

Google
Paid 18$ for soup that wasn’t even worth 18$ then i get shorted on my beef for the pho . Will never come back to this location!

Paul G.

Google
The seafood pho was great. The chicken wings were fried perfectly and paired well with the sauce. The vegetables were fresh and we had a selection of spices and sauce to add in.

Google
We had the Pad Thai and Beef Larb! I definitely enjoyed the Pad Thai, 8/10 on medium spice. Beef Larb came with sticky rice, cucumber, and lettuce, 6/10 as it was a bit watered down and not as strong with herbs as it traditionally should be. Would love to come back again to try more! Great little/small place in concord for asian cuisine! would highly recommend :) Update- Laos papaya is good!

Tram V.

Google
I like their sushi and Thai tea. But not the other dishes and boba. Pad see ew is too salty and boba is old and soft. I have to take the boba out to drink the Thai tea.

Google
First impression, the floor and tables felt sticky and the fish at the sushi bar looked old. There was nobody inside except us (8 people) but it took them 20 mins to come take our order. Took another 15 to get our drinks, and another 40 mins for our food. The food was not good. Habachi chicken was absolutely the worst I’ve eaten! It’s not habachi if you boil your chicken! It was dry and bland. Beef larb was overly plain and disappointing. Pho broth was ok but small for price. Seafood dish and Thai dish was salty and lacked flavor. Servers weren’t attentive. Disappointed in the food and service. Go somewhere else for tasty authentic Asian food.

Google
The food was delicious, we ate everything so fast, so there were no pictures... They had a buy one get one special on rolls. So we had 4 rolls that were unplanned as the special was told while we were ordering.

Katara G.

Google
The food is usually really good here, I went Sunday because the shrimp fried rice is a hit always. But That sanitation grade just through me for a loop. a freakin 88 is horrible!!! Highly suggest fixing this because in my mind that means its disgusting back there. It already looks kinda hole in the wall on the inside. And not cleanly

Yelp
I used to love this place... so when a friend suggested we grab sushi before class, I was excited to eat here again. It took the server forever to take our order, and when she did it was up charge after up charge... I asked for duck sauce instead of shrimp sauce and it was an up charge... whatever. That's fine! When our food came, the sushi was warm, and the gyoza smelled like cat food. Our boba was so hard we couldn't chew it. Definitely disappointed. We walked out hungry but still paid for our meals. I hate leaving negative reviews but the server didn't seem to care when we voiced our concerns. Hopefully they can get it together because this was my go to spot a few years ago!

Yelp
This was my first time going to Wasabi Cafe. This place is small but very cozy, the floor was a little sticky but the service was good. Serenity was our waitress and she was very helpful and so sweet. They offer a variety of food from sushi to pho. They also have wine, beer and sake but no mixed drinks. I had the tuna as an entrée with rice. The tuna was seared perfectly, My guy got the pho with beef and chicken. I never had pho with the mix of beef and chicken so you know I had to taste his. The flavor was on point if you're in Concord stop in and get you something to eat. I believe you will enjoy it.

Hilllary C.

Yelp
Amazing amazing amazing, I love this place home here specially when I want sushi, highly recommend!!!

Yelp
In my opinion, it's the best in Concord all around. Sushi is good, pho is awesome and their noodle dishes are a comfort go to. Sexy back and pimp daddy are top choices for sushi. Tiny little place but that's what gives its charm. I've been going for many years and I'll keep going for many more. Love this place, you will too!

Nathanial S.

Yelp
Great service for a hole in the wall Asian restaurant. Food flavor and options have not disappointed after multiple visits.

Yelp
Great place for the concord area! Been going here for years highly recommend for sushi or other Asian dishes.

Abree B.

Yelp
I would never return....Dishes were dirty, sushi was amazing. However, I ordered chicken hibachi and got grilled chicken, grilled veggies (w/ soft potatoes) and white rice. It wasn't what I was expecting and not worth $16. 1. Cup had purple lipstick.. not ours 2. Fork had old broccoli as if it wasn't washed. 3. Menus dirty and had a smell 4. Hostess touched her hair and went underneath her shirt and touched the tops of the drinks and passed it around to everyone. I wish I got photos but I didn't as I won't be returning and was made because I waited 45 minutes for hibachi and instead got grilled chicken and veggies.. smh

Yelp
The owner of this place is very talented. Unfortunately, his wife and daughter are very rude. Read the other reviews here and on other websites. There are quite a few that talk about how rude they are. We swore this place off between 2016-2021 due to rudeness. When we gave it another shot in 2021, there was a new server, so we began frequenting this restaurant again. This time, we are swearing this place off for good. Apparently, they are unable to keep good help, so once again, Jackie's daughter is back waiting tables, and she is not happy about it at all. You can tell it in her body language and tone she uses. Here is what happened: We arrived at 6:18 pm. Our order wasn't taken until 6:35. We ordered appetizers and 2 sushi rolls. At 7:12, an adjacent table (who had been there a total of 15 minutes) received their crab rangoon. I had been there 54 minutes and still hadn't received my edamame (appetizer). I asked our waitress (the owner's daughter) about it. She went to the kitchen. About a minute later, an older lady brought me my edamame with attitude. I said, "We have been here almost an hour." At that point, the older lady raised her voice at me, saying, "Didn't she tell you that sushi would take longer?" Um, no. She didn't tell us that there would be a delay. She did nothing to keep us informed. I pointed out that I had only asked for my edamame, which takes 5 minutes tops to steam. (I have since put it together that the older lady was the owner's wife and the young woman's mother.) A few seconds later, when the daughter refilled my drink, she poured it on my hand. She apologized, but I'm not so sure that it was an accident, as this particular girl is known for her micro aggressions. (Read the other reviews here and on Yelp). We walked out at 7:30 because we still didn't have the rest of our meal. Another couple got up about 5 minutes before we did. If you decide to eat here and the owner's daughter is your server, do not ask if she forgot about your food. Do not ask for a refill. Do not ask for anything. She will get mad at you and do things to "punish" you. Other tables who arrived after you will get their food before you. You will wait 15-20 minutes for a refill, if you get one at all. Your appetizer will come out after your entree'. She will talk loudly about you in the kitchen. And at the end of your meal, you will be presented with a very high bill that is NOT itemized.

Yelp
Great food. Wide range of food options - such to Chinese. Good value, nice staff!. Yelp

Yelp
Assumed "cafe" meant more basic and simple food. Was astonished that prices are 50% more than South Charlotte, and the place is dirty. The general rule I learned to follow having lived near Little Tokyo is "dirty sushi restaurant do not go." If the front is not clean, one doubts how clean the kitchen it is and an a sincere wonderment if it is safe establishment to eat raw fish....

Yelp
Im so glad i found this small gem! Ive been craving pho in concord and this place really good pho! I will be back for more now!

Brittany H.

Yelp
Service and all the food was amazing. We sat in the back and had plenty of room for the 6 of us. I will definitely be back to try more.

Joseph R.

Yelp
The hostess was super friendly and really chill. She answered a couple questions I had as a first time guest. The food was amazing, I got crab rangoons and sushi! The vibe was also really relaxing.

Yelp
This place has some of the best sushi in the area. We have been going here for years and love it.

Yelp
Food is always reliable. They do have lunch specials and work pretty quickly making orders. I shared some recent pictures of the menu for 2023.

Yelp
I am a celiac and it's hard to find places to eat that are knowledgeable about gluten and wheat. I spoke to the chef originally and he didn't know what it was so he handed the phone to Jackie a woman who was knowledgeable about gluten, wheat and other food allergies. She said she didn't know what celiac meant. She took the time to let me explain it to her so she could understand her patrons needs :) This was extremely appreciated! This was our first experience with Wasabi Cafe. We ordered 3 things of sushi and it was delicious! FYI their spicy mayo contains wheat. They are open for dine in now also. It was late at night so we ordered to go. They don't have a website or online menu. I was able to order off a photo from their Facebook page. In my review I will include the menu inside that she let us take a photo of. We asked for a menu to take home but they didn't have any. Overall the food was delicious will definitely be back! They need a place online for people to see their menu and the chef needs to be knowledgeable about food allergies and celiac. Jackie was a tremendous help and super sweet and nice. The chef was nice as well he just lacked understanding.

Yelp
Excellent sushi and renditions of Thai classics. Very friendly service in a small 'non-corporate' setting. Maybe they could use a few more beer and wine choices?

Alondra R.

Yelp
Food was delicious! This is definitely a hole in the wall ma and pop shop. Everything is made fresh to order and made in house. I highly recommend if you're looking for somewhere new to eat!

Yelp
This is my go to sushi restaurant. Everytime I've been here the sushi is fresh and the portions are very big. I always get the miso to start and I enjoy it every time. My go to roll is the Red Dragon and it never disappoints. The tuna is always fresh and flavorful. The staff is always friendly.

Yelp
This was one of my worst lunch time dining experiences. This place is filthy and needs a visit from the health department. They don't even deserve 1 star. After looking at the menu I settled for "soy sauce noodles" because it sounded a lot like pad see ew. I also ordered Crab Rangoon as an appetizer. While waiting approximately 30 minutes for my food I noticed that the restaurant was kind of dirty. Dust and food splatter on the walls. The noodles finally came out but not the appetizer (the Crab Rangoon). The noodles were over cooked (mushy and sticky) but did have a good taste to them. Maybe within the second bite of my food I noticed a bug crawling on the wall. It was a cockroach . I was done. This place is filthy, slow, and the food was just ok. Eat here at your own risk. I'm positive they only had one server. She wasn't very attentive but she was sweet. But here is where

Yelp
This is a small, quiet spot in the same building that I work in. The staff is very nice, the food is very good, and the facility is clean. Nothing fancy but it doesn't need to be. Today I met my mom for lunch here. Their menu is pretty diverse with a variety of sushi and sashimi dishes as well as curry, pho, and other soups, and many rice and noodle dishes. If you are on a low carb diet it may be difficult to get what you need. I ordered the Nixon Special appetizer. There were 3 Three different types of appetizers on the plate. Crab rangoon, gyoza, and another type of dumpling I can't remember the name of. The appetizer was delicious! It came with 2 sauces. My mom & I both ordered the Soy Sauce Noodles with chicken. The portion size was plenty, neither of us ate it all. The only thing I would say possibly negative is the noodles were almost dumpling like they were so large. lol I'm used to wide rice noodles that are a little less wide, but the flavor was great. The broccoli was perfect and so were the carrots. The chicken was tender and cut properly to keep it tender with a nice texture. My mom and I both decided we would definitely go back.

Yelp
The cooked food is pretty good. I don't really like the soups or their raw offerings. Their spring rolls are good. My only suggestion is to clean this place up. They need to close for a day and do some deep thorough cleaning. The staff is friendly and helpful. The location and parking is convenient.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely delicious sushi! The Crab Rangoon are the best I've had anywhere around here! Family owned and operated so they take pride in offering locally themed sushi rolls. It's definitely our go-to place

Ella P.

Yelp
The floor was literally refusing to let go of my shoes it was so sticky like I want to take a shower in hand sanitizer

APRIL M.

Yelp
I ordered a lunch pick up which took me 30 minutes to get. They would not honor the menu online because they said they had a new owner, so I did not get the salad that was to be included and was charged more even without it. The food quality is not the same. Not sure who is the new owner and/or manager, but for those who live in the neighborhood, it's disappointing.

Eric R.

Yelp
Pho was very good! Loved it a lot good portion also definitely well be back at this location for more beef pho
google avatar

The Real Deuce R.

Yelp
Omg this is my new pho place. Listen the portions were great. The sushi was on point. I will be back many many more times! I've been a good 3-4x this month. I enjoy the pho. The atmosphere is semi-hole in the wall once you're inside. Those are the best joints though.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place for authentic Laotian food! Their papaya salad is on point! Be careful when they're backed up though. Many mistakes were made but they were very accommodating about it. The floor is really sticky and the space is pretty small so not that great for large groups. Food is affordable and don't miss their specials board on the right side of the hall as soon as you walk in! Appetizer sampler sucks, don't get it. The shumai is soggy and flavorless and the gyoza filling is bland and mushy. The crab Rangoon is bomb though! Larb Gai is a good chicken dish with Tom Yum flavoring! I love that it comes with sticky rice. Their papaya salad special comes with fried chicken wings that are nice and crispy!

Blair B.

Yelp
I love the sushi here. Hands down best sushi selection in town. Staff is always friendly and food never disappoints!

Yelp
So many friends have told me how great Wasabi Cafe is and we finally tried it on a whim driving to the mall. I had a pho craving for days but once I got there and saw the sushi menu I didn't even care about the pho (but that's a great reason to go back). The sushi rolls were amazing! We tried the Johnny K and South Rainbow rolls. O. M. G. I will dream about the Johnny K for many a night. They use real crab in their rolls and not imitation crab and it shows. This may be my new favorite spot. I'm looking forward to trying the pho and red curry. They have a huge menu that is varied. You're missing something good if you don't check them out.

Amber S.

Yelp
The service was good. The rolls way over priced. They aren't bad rolls, just basic.

Yelp
The good: ~ I was greeted promptly as soon as I walked through the door. ~ There was no wait for a table. ~ The waitress remembered my lemon for my water. (This is a huge pet peeve of mine!) ~ Speed of service (I only had 30 minutes for lunch.) The bad: ~ My sushi tasted like mush. I seriously could not decipher what I was eating as I was chewing it. So glad I did not pay the extra $1.50 for soy paper. It would have been a waste. ~ My cashew chicken was meh. There was no sweet heat as is typical with Thai cashew dishes. I'm still trying to figure out what the flavor of the sauce was. I think it may be tomato based, but I'm not sure. The only reason I kept eating it was A.) I hate wasting money on food and B.) I really wanted to figure out what the heck I was tasting. The ugly: ~ The place is dirrrty and I'm not talking Christina Aguilera dirrrty here. The floors are sticky and everything needs degreased. I'm shocked they passed inspection. ~ The place is tiny. It's literally a long hall with tables on the both sides of the wall and just enough room to walk between them. You aren't dining alone even if you are a party of one here. ~ Yelp reviews have yet again befuddled me. How anyone can call this good sushi and give this place five stars is beyond comprehension. I have had better sushi at grocery stores and airports and that is saying A LOT.

Tyler P.

Yelp
We love this place! Food is delicious, best crab rangoons you can find. Sushi is fresh and Thai food is great as well! Staff is always friendly, highly recommended!

Jenny T.

Yelp
I love this place until today! I ate so much and there was left over so I ate the rest in the evening until I found this INSECT HEAD in my food... look like a cockroach head WTF!!! I'm so disgusted!!!! I want to throw up!

Yelp
This place is hidden away in a medical/business complex, and it's truly a hidden gem of Concord. This was our first trip here and we'll definitely be back. The service was phenomenal and the food was insanely good. Everything was super fresh and tasty! They even make their own shrimp sauce - so good. We'd intended to come for pho, which is advertised on their window, but after exploring the menu and seeing how good the prices were for sushi and Japanese dishes, we decided to try that instead. My fiance got one of the sushi combos. I got beef hibachi. And we split an order of crab rangoons. The rangoons were some of the best we've had. The sushi was fresh and delicious (my fiance was gracious enough to share). I asked for no mushrooms on my hibachi and they were happy to accommodate. The hibachi was really flavorful and seasoned perfectly. It had potatoes in it which is unique twist on the dish and definitely added a nice texture. I've never had it served that way before. Kind of wish it was served with fried rice instead of steamed, but the shrimp sauce made up for it! Overall, this place is super awesome and family run. We'll definitely be back to try some other dishes in the future!

Yelp
Amazing food! Never disappointed when I go here. It's always quiet every time I go here. Definitely going back soon!

Yelp
Omg the best baked salmon roll! Also really enjoyed the Tornado roll, the Ugly roll, the shashimi and the veggie pad Thai. I could eat here everyday always great quality food! Well crafted rolls and great size.

Yelp
vibes are so cozy this time of year and the food is always so good, get the large miso soup and it warms your soul but everything on the menu is amazing and made fresh to order and the staff is very helpful and will answer all your questions! such a great little place cannot recommend enough

Yelp
The food from here has always been a plus ever since I was a kid, and the staff has always been nice. The masaman curry is always super good and the mango sticky rice is an absolute favorite!

Yelp
This is my family's favorite sushi spot! I have been coming here for years and have never been disappointed. The food quality is a 10. The atmosphere is authentic and a 10. And the staff and service are also a 10. Very traditional, authentic and so good! I have attached a picture of our recent take out order, which was out of this world!

Yelp
My little family and I decided to give this place a try because we alway drove by it and was always curious so we finally got to dine in today. We were greeted with a great waitress. We got to sit wherever we wanted. It was more of a, "walk in and sit wherever" kind of thing and not them sitting you down so I liked that. With my 7 month old son, I was looking for a high chair and couldn't find one but the lady was kind enough to ask if I needed one so she got us one. Ordered our drinks and it got here fast as well as our food. I got the coconut boba tea for the price of $3.99 -- it was okay, I had better. We also ordered beef pho $7.99, papaya salad combo that came with either fried chicken wings or beef jerky and sticky rice $12.99 & Asian Pimp Roll $12.99. The pho was okay. It didn't have much condiments or meat. Could had been better if they had them and tripe as well as tendon. I mean, who doesn't like those delicious stuff in their pho? The papaya salad combo with fried chicken was good. There was an option of papaya salad too, which I thought it was pretty neat. Laos, Thai or American. I decided to try the Laos and it was pretty fishy. Fish sauce wise. If it was a little less fish sauce, it would had been perfect. Oh yeah, 3 star spice level was pretty darn spicy. Next time I'm gonna try a 2 star instead. I didn't eat the fried chicken but my husband and kids loved it. Oh yeah, the portion of the papaya salad is kind of small for its price considering without the combo, it's $6.99 I believe? The Asian Pimp was pretty good. I will probably go back there to try the rest of their sushi though. So definitely a 4 star from me!

Yelp
Went back today and WOW. Had the beef pho and Thai tea. No lie, might be the best pho broth I've EVER tasted (this includes hole-in-the-wall joints in LA, and homemade pho at Thai friends' homes). I will say the steak in it was meh, but the brisket, tendons (requested addition), and meatballs were AMAZING. Best meatballs too, not that usual terrible crunchy eraser/flip-flop texture, these were soft and delicious. Only point of improvement/request would be to carry limes instead of lemons, but that's a minor detail. Very delicious big bowl of warm comforting pho. Thai tea was a generous and beautifully presented serving for the price. Also very delicious. Customer service was on point, and they did all the proper covid stuff. Awesome place. Will definitely come back much more often.

Yelp
I have been going to Wasabi for many years with friends & family. I was in there on June 2nd and ordered sushi for two for myself as I like to take home leftovers. I felt like when the waitress brought my food out something was missing. I questioned our waitress, what all comes with sushi for two. She said "I don't know" I said I have ordered this before and something is missing on the trays, not only that, they put my friends California roll on my tray, which was fine. My friend and I started eating and my friend stated "her California roll didn't taste right". So, when the waitress came back to check on us, my friend said "what is this in my sushi"? It was noodles. The waitress said "haven't you ever had a California roll before?" she said "yes we eat here all the time" and it has never looked like that the waitress said "well that is how we make them here". I asked the waitress again, did you check to see what all comes with sushi for two, she said "it's all there" I said no ma'am it's not. I know I am missing at least the 2 pieces of eel and something else. She brought that out and we continued to enjoy our lunch. I thought about what happened for a few days. I called back up there on June 6th and asked to speak to the owner. The lady who answered said "I am the owner". She said "I was the lady that waited on you and you are calling a week later complaining". I said to her very nicely, first of all I am not complaining and the reason for my call is to prevent this from happening again. I only want the food that I ordered and paid for. It isn't my intentions on trying to get free food, because I am not that type of person. I want to be clear so when I order again. I told her I took pictures of my order she asked "can you send them to me" I said I was out of town and prefer to come up there in the next fews days. I was able to go up there on June 7th, to talk to the owner in person. I walked in she said how can I help you, I said are you the owner and "she said the owners daughter". However on the phone she said "she was the owner" I said politely to her, you are the owners daughter, so technically you were not the owner. She looked at her mom and said "can you help her because obviously I can't" she was very rude in talking with me. I explained to her mom and continued to be polite. Her mother of course took up for her and said well technically we are a family owned business so you will talk to her on occasions. I said that was fine but as a business owner myself, I would never speak to anyone the way your daughter spoke to me. She said "well that is you and asked if I was done". I said to her mom see you don't even want to talk or try to apologize. So, my point for my review, kindness goes a long way and I was nothing but nice from day one. Lastly, while waiting to talk to the owner, with it being a family owned business. I am assuming that was their young child behind the counter dipping out his own soup and rice, as small as he was, I said to myself. I sure hope he doesn't burn himself. I'm pretty sure if a food inspector walked in that wouldn't be allowed. Makes you wonder what else goes on behind the counter that you don't see. Sadly, the rudeness got me and I won't be back.
google avatar

Traci S.

Yelp
Sushi here is great, especially when you look at the price, however, service was horrible. You can't send food back for any reason, even if staff got the order wrong. Also the man who took our order didn't even work here and was just 'helping out his girlfriend', even though she wasn't working at all and there was only us and another table while we ate. The other table had issues as well he forgot an extra soy sauce dish to us and to busy promoting his own business to the other table to ever check on us. Offered no refills until we already had our checks. The restaurant is disgusting as well.

Yelp
California roll was very fresh, great presentation! We also got the Thai Tea something new it was very refreshing! I love there red curry and Mee Krob. Staff is always very helpful. They just started a rewards program! "Spot On" when you visit 10 times you get a free roll! Stop by and see the Best, most friendliest sushi chef!! He always makes it the way we ask with fresh ingredients!
