Riding your bike on something as cool as the nation's oldest operating velodrome is a real treat, and we're truly fortunate to have it for free in our backyard. My only concern is that the rules don't seem to be posted anywhere, so those unfamiliar with the track may not be engaging in the safest practices. Always turn left; pass on the right; if someone yells "Stick!" or "Stay!" Hold your line and don't make a dramatic movement so you can be passed safely.
The Monday Night Stock Bike program is a great way to get your kids out of the house and pedaling like they mean it. It was so cool for my 5 year old that he was motivated to get off training wheels just so he could go around the track faster.
Tuesday Night Premiere Racing is a total riot. Seeing people compete from very first timers to national competitors is just so much fun. Bringing in food trucks to feed your family while you sit on the hill is a nice touch.
As a long time rider, and first season racer, I can assure you this is an excellent place to learn the discipline. The volunteers running the show are knowledgeable, kind, and really want to see you succeed.
If you can, sign up for a Track 101 session to learn a little bit about this public treasure.
