Famed for Its Diving, Bonaire Is a Paradise for Birders, Too

"Covering 14,000 acres of two former plantations in the island's northwest, the park is ringed by cliffs and beaches with a desertlike interior. We passed donkeys, progeny of animals left by the Spaniards who cleared the hardwoods in the 15th century. The place felt foreboding—yet birds were everywhere."

A must see when you visit Bonaire. Make sure you bring a 4x4 and your snorkelkit. Important: When you want to snorkel or dive at Bonaire you have to pay a nature fee (STINAPA). With this you can also enter the park for free.

A must visit if you are in Bonaire! Nice wildlife and good snorkeling spots. Be prepared and bring a lot of water and food, especially if you are doing the long route.

Slaagbaai National Park is an absolute must-visit in Bonaire! We took the long route and started early, which gave us plenty of time to explore all the incredible landscapes and wildlife. From rugged coastlines to hidden beaches and salt flats, there’s so much to see. We spotted flamingos, iguanas, and plenty of birds along the way. A 4x4 vehicle is a must—the roads are rough, but that’s part of the adventure! The views are stunning, and there are plenty of great spots to stop, take in the scenery, and even swim. If you love nature and a bit of off-road exploring, this park is definitely worth it!

Nothing really of interest here that was worth paying $80 for the two of us to enter the park yes idea for hikers not recommend you take a car into the park even with a pick up truck. It was a rough ride. The roads are really bad yes to say to see on the cliff you can see that anywhere. expected to see more wildlife the entrance down to the beach is really sketchy. If you’re young and healthy you would have a little bit of a problem. Otherwise it’s tough to get down to the beach. definitely have to wear water shoes. It could take anywhere from one and a half to four hours getting around the park we took the short route because the roads and the ride was so rough. there is nowhere in the park to use bathroom until you before the exit. There is no place in the park to get water or soda or anything to eat so bring something with you. Seen a lot of people discard the cigarettes and plastic bottles. I am a smoker and I bring a bottle with me to put my ashes in overall not a great experience. Nothing that stuck out said oh wow look at this. So just remember it’s $40 per person. Sometimes your maximum speed will be 15 to 18 km down to 5 to 7. There are some major potholes and bumps. The were some flamingos, but not a lot. We drove around the park and the most we seen was at the exit them. flamingos are very shy, so people were walking up to them, which scares them. They fly away. There was a sign posted. Don’t go past the sign, but people just ignored it.

Worth a trip. Be aware that the long route will take over 3 hours with a few stops. This is definitely an offroad type route. Don't attempt in a car with limited ground clearance. Expect very rough road conditions. It is worth it though. A totally different desert type environment. We stopped to snorkel at #2, towards the end. Very nice location, stairs down to the water and coral immediately off the beach. Our recommendation would be to get there early, bring lunch and drinks. Expect a 4-6 hour visit with stops and snorkeling.

Fantastic Park! This is such a contrast to the shores and coral reefs on the other side of the island. It rained but we still had a great time driving through the park and getting out periodically. The muddy roads were terrible and we definitely would not have made it with anything less than an SUV. Your STINAPA fee payment receipt gets you in here.

Boka Slagbaai: A Hidden Gem in Bonaire If you're visiting Bonaire, don’t miss Boka Slagbaai—one of the island’s most scenic and rewarding beaches. Nestled within Washington Slagbaai National Park, this spot offers crystal-clear waters and vibrant coral gardens that make snorkeling an absolute delight. You’ll find an abundance of colorful fish and calm conditions ideal for swimming. The beach itself is a mix of soft sand and fossilized coral, so water shoes are a smart addition. And the ochre-yellow colonial buildings nearby add a charming historical touch to the landscape2. Whether you're hiking through the park or just looking for a peaceful place to unwind, Boka Slagbaai is well worth the visit.

The roads are quite rutted/bumpy in places so definitely not to be taken on if you are of a delicate disposition! We had a fantastic day and did the long route which probably took the best part of 4hrs including stopping at every site marked on the map and snorkelling at two of the sites aswell. The landscape is untouched, much like Jurassic park without the dinosuars! Not to be taken on in adverse weather, we went the day after heavy rain and there Was a lot of mud/puddles to navigate through. Would recommend as a day trip If you are staying in the island for a while.
