Famed for Its Diving, Bonaire Is a Paradise for Birders, Too

"Covering 14,000 acres of two former plantations in the island's northwest, the park is ringed by cliffs and beaches with a desertlike interior. We passed donkeys, progeny of animals left by the Spaniards who cleared the hardwoods in the 15th century. The place felt foreboding—yet birds were everywhere."

Fantastic Park! This is such a contrast to the shores and coral reefs on the other side of the island. It rained but we still had a great time driving through the park and getting out periodically. The muddy roads were terrible and we definitely would not have made it with anything less than an SUV. Your STINAPA fee payment receipt gets you in here.

The roads are quite rutted/bumpy in places so definitely not to be taken on if you are of a delicate disposition! We had a fantastic day and did the long route which probably took the best part of 4hrs including stopping at every site marked on the map and snorkelling at two of the sites aswell. The landscape is untouched, much like Jurassic park without the dinosuars! Not to be taken on in adverse weather, we went the day after heavy rain and there Was a lot of mud/puddles to navigate through. Would recommend as a day trip If you are staying in the island for a while.

Washington SLAGBAAI park. We should have read all the reviews, but our love for off the beaten path places won over common sense. Well, this one was off off beaten path. First of all you have to buy STINAPA pass, which used to be $25.00 for non- divers and now $40.00 per person for everybody. Second : the roads are in such a terrible condition. For the amount of money tourists pay some basic road works could be done. What a disrespectful attitude. And the last and most sad news is that the famous someday snorkeling places : Wayaca and Boca Slagbaai are nothing but cemetery of the corals. Maybe they used to be much better in the past. There are so many beautiful places to snorkel much closer. Probably divers are more lucky. So some undoubtedly very nice views are not worth your time and money.

The National Park was great, hiking up Brandaris in particular was a highlight. As we had already paid the Stinapa fee to dive it was technically a free visit. Would definitely recommend a visit.

Great views, snorkeling and diving. Make sure you come early as beaches close by 3:30, park at 5. It takes a couple hours to drive the entire park and it is one way, so you must complete the loop. Recommend a solid vehicle, nonexistent roads and big up and down slopes. Not for those who can't take 2 hours of real off road driving.

A very big national park with roads that can only be driven if you have a big pickup truck (4x4). The snorkling areas are great but fir the rest the park does not offer anything really special. We did see 2 amazing birds of prey alongside the road. It takes you a few hours to drive around, max speed average is 25 km/h

The park takes hours to navigate so plan for a day trip if you want to enjoy yourself. Be sure to get there before noon if you want time to snorkel or enjoy the narrow, white sand beaches. You MUST have a four wheel drive vehicle that can handle some gnarly dirt roads. Take the long way, not the short way, as you'll see amazing scenery along the coast -- and both ways have to take the hour long trek out anyway. The park entrance has a ticket booth, toilets, a tiny shop with drinks, and a mini "museum." You have to buy your nature pass to get in -- buying it online before arrival will save you time. Due to the coral disease you'll need to disinfectant any snorkel gear you have (currently diving isn't permitted at any of the sites) but they have rinse tanks on site -- it takes about 4 minutes.
