Seeing a Beloved Slice of Southeast Asia Anew on an Oceania Cruise

"A cruise excursion to Koh Samui takes us on a whirlwind tour of the Thai island’s campiest temple complexes. At the flamboyant Wat Plai Laem, we gawp at an 18-armed statue of the goddess Guanyin."

A beautiful temple near the Big Buddha, built in a lake and surrounded by a giant lotus flower. The main reason to visit the place is the statue of Guanyin, the Buddhist goddess of mercy and grace with 18 arms and a giant footprint of Buddha. If you throw a coin at the statue and make a wish, you are guaranteed that it will come true. There are giant goldfish in the lake that will be happy if you feed them with food sold there.

Very impressive temple area that offers a lot of optical highlights. The fantastic architecture of these buildings and buddha statues are outstanding. The positioning of some buildings on little islands creates an unique arrangement which will be kept in the memory of the observer for a long time.

Beautiful temple with few big statues, also a chinese temple in the complex. Clean toilet are available. Easy to come and park in motorbike. You can buy for very cheap some food to give to the fish. We also saw some turtle.

Wat Plai Laem is a truly stunning and peaceful temple in Koh Samui. Surrounded by water, the main temple sits beautifully in the center, creating a magical view. The 18-handed Guanyin statue is breathtaking, symbolizing compassion, while the large Buddha shines brightly, adding to the serene atmosphere. The intricate details and colorful artwork throughout the temple make it a must-visit. You can also buy fish food for just 10 baht and feed the fish and turtles, which adds to the experience. There’s a small store nearby for refreshments. A perfect place to visit for both beauty and tranquility!

A beautiful complex. There's toilets and it's easy to catch a Grab/taxi. The temples are all in great condition and absolutely stunning to see up close. Watch out for the friendly cats, they'll hold you hostage! Sadly the Guanyin was blocked off due to flooding, but I assume it'll be open again soon.

Overall it wasn’t a waste of time to see, but don’t get your hopes up of being in awe. Anyone rating this 5 stars clearly has seen any other temple in their life. Even the one a 15 min walk to the coast is 3x better. Unfortunately you can tell it is a free attraction and honestly they could benefit by charging something so that they could maintain the exterior of the statues. Paint was chipping and flooring outside was peeling up. Smells were horrid - likely due to the overpopulated pond of huge catfish and others. Cats in the temple and chickens outside. It was still something different to do and see but left feeling a bit sad for the place as it clearly had potential when it was built. Please please donate money when coming if you can afford it! Would love to return here a couple decades from now and leave a new review.

Great temple with some nice views, I enjoyed this more than the big Buddha that was located close by. Lots of fishes and some turtles, even some frogs. Details on the big statues are lacking a bit, but the size is impressive. Inside the temples it was nice. Worth a visit if you are on the island

Highly recommended! Relaxed walking and taking photos around Wat Plai Laem will take about an hour. Don’t miss feeding the catfish in the lake—they’re so cool and fun to watch! A must-visit spot on Samui!
