Watershed Review - River North - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Watershed is the rare speakeasy that doesn’t have an air of exclusivity. It’s easily located in Pops For Champagne (a massive “W” marks the staircase) and bartenders will fist bump you while talking about the origins of the bourbon in your experimental cocktail. The whole place feels like hanging out in grandpa’s basement—complete with a leather couch and chess set—with friends who are studying for Mixology 201 by making hit-or-miss drinks. One cocktail might include white port, bitters, peaflower, and Sprite. Another might be more straightforward like a mezcal grapefruit margarita…with Malört. Luckily, the menu changes regularly, and every season focuses on a different TV show like The Good Place or Sex And The City. A night at Watershed depends a lot on the “season” and the crowd—which ranges from people on dates to rowdy groups of friends. But it’s worth taking a chance on this River North bar for the novelty and creative cocktails." - Veda Kilaru

Google
Nice place with very good service and many craft beers on tap (i think around 30). The menu offers a mix of Pub food and German food. All food options look very good and the Schnitzel was good as well. Definitely a recommendation.

Patrick Medina

Google
Great food with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere! I ordered the schnitzel dinner with spaetzel and jagersauce and it was delicious - perfectly cooked and savory. The employees were all extremely friendly as well. Will definitely be coming back to try the rest of the menu!

Google
Amazing food made from scratch. All of it! Amazing beer selection. Creative decor and unique music selections. The owner is almost always there (meaning the service is always on point). The owner as well as the bartenders/wait staff are friendly and easy to talk to. This experience (food and atmosphere) is NOT what you would expect in a strip mall location. I stop here almost every time I'm in Houston. Outdoor seating too. Kid friendly.

Jessica Pope

Google
Amazing beers, delicious food, cool environment…what more can one ask for! A great place with a unique and inviting atmosphere that feels like home. The Apple walnut & Brie salad is incredible, the Turkey club is to die for, Kohlrouladen and schnitzel are huge delicious portions...my goal is to try everything. I seriously can’t get enough of their food! Bring all your friends!!

Jonathon Taylor

Google
The loaded fries are amazing, but the deep fried pretzel bites with beer cheese were even better. Really friendly service as well. Feels very much like a local neighborhood bar but with a great beer selection.

Sarah Orr

Google
We wanted German food. We realized, oh this is a bar. But that’s ok. It was a really chill environment. The atmosphere is meh. It needs a pool table in the middle of the restaurant, but I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious the food was! Man it was Soooo good. I had the cabbage rolls. My husband had the chicken schnitzel with spetzel. It was really good! I’ve had spetzel a few times before but this was the best yet! They also had non-alcoholic beer. So I was happy to pretend I was drinking. Over all it was a fun time and really good food.

Auda Gee

Google
Just a delight to come here. Trivia night was fun! The pork shank was divine—somewhat similar to what you get in Germany. There were pieces of unsweetened apples cooked inside pork. The masked potatoes, as well as fries, were pretty awesome. Fried fish was light and flaky. The beer selection was stellar (keep the 512 pecan Porter). Fried pretzel rolls were ok, but mustard and cheese were really good. Overall, the staff was so incredibly accommodating.

Darrell Hooker

Google
The pork shank was flavorless (aside from smokiness (but smoked food also needs seasoning)). Wine demi glaze was mostly bland as well. And potatoes, which should’ve been an easy opportunity to bring some flavor, were uninspired and two dimensional at best. To top it off, the whole thing was ludicrously overpriced.

Yelp
Watershed is one of those awesome IYKYK places here in SW Houston. Located in Meyerpark, it's easy to get to, a big space, and a place is locals enjoy for drinks and food. The interior is plain, but the pops like the cassette wall and show posters on the walls keep it funl. They have a large bar, but for all the times I've been there, no one has gotten rowdy, and there are plenty of families that bring the kiddos (ours included). There is an outdoor patio with several picnic tables - I only wish the weather were nicer more often to use them. Okay! On to the main act - the food! It's good, all of it. Between us, we've had all the appetizers, sandwiches, all the sausages/ brats, all of the sides, and pretty sure we've got all the entrees as well. The child has made the round on the kids menu as well and remains satisfied with the fare. Some of my favorites are the goulash, kohulraden (the stuffed cabbage), and the schnitzel platter. Pretty much all the things are made in house and it shines through. It's counter service, but the ladies at the bar are super sweet, the runners always make sure we've got what we need, and a shout out to the owner who we adore and is also a local in our community (it's nice to be able to support folks who bring awesome sauce to the neighborhood).

Yelp
Nice location with plenty of parking Good German food - had the meatballs Lots of seating options inside and out Very good service

Yelp
Nice atmosphere and maybe a good place to hangout, but the food was mediocre, especially for the price. I had the reuben ($21.50) and pork schnitzel ($21.50) and both lacked flavor, even with the jagersaus ($5 upcharge, comparable to what a steakhouse would charge for a sauce). The reuben was overcooked and had gray meat, similar to what another reviewer said.

Yelp
I'll never understand Houstonian's views on restaurants and good food. 4.3 stars?! Travel and experience what good restaurants are. This "German" restaurant/bar had about 1 German beer on tap even though they list a lot more online (bait and switch). The sausages were extremely weird and ended up being unfinishable. I did like the bretzel (butter and pretzel) even though it was nothing like bretzel in Germany. The fries were also good. The Rachel sandwich was pretty bad. Instead of thousand island dressing like most US versions of Rachel's and Rueben's they did a weird bbq sauce. Horrible idea. The in-house smoked turkey needed to be smoked for more than 3 minutes in a microwave. Overall, most of the food really lacked flavor except for a weird, gross, undefinable quality.

Yelp
Service was great and there is quite a selection of beers. Food was mediocre. Tater tots were nice and crispy but tasted like fish. Pastrami was very overdone, cooked to a grayish color. Some retro decor, but boxes and storage out front is at bit of a mess.

Yelp
We got the packed fries, which we really liked. Loved the gravy combo with the cheese. The fries were really crispy, yet light and airy. They're pretty much perfect fries. It is a bit on the pricier side ($14 for the portion you're getting). I got the pork shoulder with sauerkraut and potatoes. The pork was pretty good (a little on the dry side), but the whole dish was a bit on the greasier side for me. I think it must be from the pork, but I moved it into a to go box and the next day the to go box was pretty oily too. I really wanted to try the pork shank, but it was $30 so I didn't want to go too ham that night (maybe next time!). My fiance enjoyed his weisswurst. The sausage had a nice flavor and it made a great combo with the pretzel bread. It comes with two sauces and my fiance said the mustard was really strong for him. It cleared up his sinuses. I liked the other sauce a lot. It kind of tasted like Japanese curry to me. The whole meal cost around $55 for us (a bit on the pricier side), but worth a try!

Yelp
Cool place for sure ! Parking: They're in a shopping center so there's tons of parking ! Seating: They have tables (4 tops) and booths. I didn't find the tables particularly comfortable or noteworthy but we were able to pull several together since we had a bug group which was nice. Ordering: You do have to go up to the bar to put in your order. They do bring your food order to you though! I love that they had a cider option instead of just beer. I think they have a full bar too I ordered the burger and it was DELICIOUS ! I was honestly surprised Ambiance: Their decor is pretty cool and a nod to having been in Houston for so long. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here but it's a solid and chill place if you're in the area.

Yelp
I have been going to this fun hole in the wall oasis for years now. Located just southwest of the 610 loop, this watering hole offers a fine variety of food (mostly German inspired), a fully stocked bar, and fun environment. A group of friends and I found this restaurant while searching for pub trivia's years ago, and most Tuesday we meet up for some friendly competition and libations. The bar itself has fun retro parody concert posters, and bar backsplash has old cassette tapes. Every table is a great seat for trivia or just dining in general. You can peer into the kitchen just slightly, and the delicious smells ruminate as the patrons enjoy their meals. The staff has always been friendly. The owner and manager is often there and makes his way around the bar ensuring everyone is having a great time. This has been a special spot for me and my friends for years. Come out for pub trivia nights on Tuesdays!

Yelp
Why did my apple pastry a la mode have no ice cream ? Also chocolate sauce on apple pastry? It was not good. Actual food was okay. Not super flavorful. The sweet potato fries are awesome though. Ambiance is nice and service was pretty fast. They have lots of cool posters and good lighting. Food is expensive but not worth it though so won't be coming back.

Yelp
Honestly amazing pretzel. We got it on a whim because we saw another couple with one and wow it was the best thing we ate here. If you are looking for a super bready dense pretzel, this is NOT your guy. This pretzel was piping hot and fluffy however. The whipped butter and mustard was the perfect addition. Next favorite part of our meal were the sweet potato fries. In last place was the bratwurst. It was technically very tasty. I think many people would like it, but it just tasted too natural for me (keep in mind my idea of a good hotdog is the costco one). Great little spot otherwise!

Yelp
Not worth it. I paid $27 for two fish sticks, a few fries, a coke and an 18% tip. Stingy portions. More fries in a small Burger King order. Next time I'll buy fish and chips frozen from Randall's grocery across the parking lot and cook them at home for a fraction of the cost. Sadly disappointed. I hate being disappointed with lunch.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Food just ok Service. Well you pretty much do all yourself but they delivered food to table fine The Diet Coke machine line must have got mixed with another line or they just don't clean the lines as it was awful and had funny taste to it. Told them. Nothing done Ice machine kept running out. Ambiance was ok. Nothing special No I won't return. Don't get me wrong. Just wasn't impressed. You might like.

Yelp
The food was lousy. The beer was good. The pretzel bites tasted greasy and the cheese dip was very bland. The Reuben sandwich also tasted bland and the meat was gray in color. Very little sauerkraut.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday afternoon. It wasn't too busy but it was also 1:30pm so the lunch crowd may have already left. The menu suggests that this is a German pub with some other traditional pub fares mixed in like fish & chips. Being a vegetarian, I was somewhat limited in choices. I chose the kasespatzle which is basically German mac & cheese. It was a good portion for one person as an appetizer. I liked it as it wasn't too heavy and the fried onions on top gave it a good contrast to the cheese. They have a good selection of beer on tap. Mostly German style of the local microbrew variety though. I saw Paulaner Weisse on tap and grabbed that. Refreshing on a summer day. I haven't found any microbrews that can emulate a true German hefeweizen.

Yelp
The food here is amazing and fresh. Service was on point and the restaurant has a good vibe.

Yelp
This is my secret go to in SW Houston. Super chill German bar with great food. I love their schnitzel and fish and chips. They always have something unique to try on the beer menu. Service is good. I go here like every 2 weeks.
google avatar

BeckyAnn S.

Yelp
They are a small local business and the food never disappoints, we've never had a bad dish. This is my go to place for a bretzel. We go at least once a week and the bartenders are always nice and they welcome you after recognizing their regular customers. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Taehee I.

Yelp
One of my favourite places in Houston. Food is a bit pricey, but they make up for it in quality. My favourites are the cheese kasespatzle, the fish and chips, and the pork shank. The schnitzel is great too. Love coming to this place!

Brian B.

Yelp
Christian miracle, the only that I didn't like about this place was their lack of a premium import beer from Colorado but they have seen the light and now it's a perfect 10! Go here and enjoy great food and wonderful staff!

Thomas S.

Yelp
An interesting menu is somewhat hampered by a strange interior and genuinely low quality service. The appetizer was OK sausage sampler. My cabbage rolls were tremendous, but my friends were less enthused about their meals and I'm not shocked. if the kitchen is half as confused as the bar it's no wonder I tried to get a cosmopolitan and after several bartenders, just sort of walked away from me finally, a server came up and asked if they could help and I said I was been waiting for a drink for a while She was a real sweetheart and tried to make a cosmopolitan, but had never seen one before. Absolutely the nastiest drink I have ever been poured. Worse than Campari. But again, no shame on her she was just trying to help It would've gotten more stars if it wasn't such a mess to get service

Yelp
I've been to Watershed twice. Me and my buddy play tennis in the area so we've stopped by afterwards for some dinner. Watershed is a German restaurant and bar located in a shopping center so parking won't be an issue. They do close early for a bar so make sure to get their early enough. You order at the counter and then they bring your food to you. I've had the sausage sampler and most recently, the schnitzel with spaetzle. The portion sizes are generous and the food is solid. Stop by for some quality German food and some brews.
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
Love Watershed! It's one of our default, go to neighborhood restaurants. Nice patio out front and such good choices on the menu. Top 5 best grilled cheeses I've ever had in my life too!
google avatar

Tim C.

Yelp
We had to do an errand so we needed fuel and Watershed was close by and the food is great. We scored a couple entrees that were very tasty, the fish and chips are crunchy on the outside and tender n tasty on the inside, they bring out a caddy with condiments to go with it, our favorite is the malt vinegar. I got a kasseler sammich, brined and smoked pork loin, bacon, sauerkraut, dill pickles, muenster cheese, dijon on toasted pumpernickel....all condiments are made in house...ate half the sammy and half of my side of tater tots done their way...yum, took the rest home so I'll get another meal out of it. We shared an 8 ounce glass of a tasty beer made by Real Ale, Coffee Porter, shoulda got 16 ounces. Great counter service.

Walter C.

Yelp
Cool little bar with a great beer selection and pretty good food. Service was excellent, very friendly people Definitely will go again

Rich K.

Yelp
Great local spot for a wide selection of beers and great food. We both enjoyed the authentic German menu items. Especially the smoked pork loin, sauerkraut and bratwursts. Staff was friendly, placing orders at the bar went smoothly, the 2 behind the bar worked well taking orders in and serving the groups around the bar area. Definitely recommend the Watershed.

Yelp
First time here. Man I wanted to love this place especially being so close to home. Sadly I was disappointed . The place definitely needs some TLC, tables were wobbly and high chairs sticky. Service was nice, the staff were friendly. Man the big disappointment was the food!! SALTY!!!! That's it! It was all too salty from the fries to the burger. The price is so so, ehh. Definitely not even worth going back to be honest.

Michael L.

Yelp
If you're here to eat bratwurst, this is the only review you need. You're either gonna love the bratwurst, or think it's just OK. That's because it tastes very natural, almost like seasoned ground pork within a light casing. Maybe this is due to my unrefined palette but this is unfortunately not the kind of sausage I look forward to. If you like this natural taste, then this bratwurst will knock your socks off and you should look at this like a 5 star review. But if you're like me, and you want some thing, that's closer to a highly processed, juicy, hot dog, with a little bit of snap, then go elsewhere, for you won't like this. Pretzels were amazing, definitely get one!
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
Love the sausages on the menu. Great selection of beers. Great local hang out for Willow Bend and Meyerland folks. I talked to the owner and convinced him that he needs a Bum Phillips sanctuary there in one corner.
google avatar

Spencer J.

Yelp
Moved here a little less than a year ago, and have really fallen in love with this place! Food is generally good, love the wings and sandwiches, but the real highlight is the staff! Super friendly staff and regulars, really love the neighborhood feel.
google avatar

Rodney C.

Yelp
Food is good, but the prices are high for the portion. The ambiance would be enjoyable if it weren't for the televisions and sports.

D J.

Yelp
Food was tasty and plentiful. Pleasant find. Lots of beer choices. I would return if back in that area.
google avatar

Melissa G.

Yelp
Came in on a hot summery night to cool down with some delicious cold pints and some German fare as suggested by a friend while we were visiting from Austin. Boy were we surprised to find such a great and local spot hidden in a strip mall where Randall's can be seen from the window seats and patio. Love the decor here! All of the screen printed artwork you see with bands & dates on it is done by famous Uncle Charlie - local screen printer artist that has this place lined with cool and nostalgic bands and shows. There is also a cool map of AstroWorld near the restroom area which adds to the coolness of this place. Beers here are a'flowin! So many good and local beers here on tap ready for you to have while you dine in or take one or two to-go while we at it! If you want some cocktails I would recommend checking out the curated cocktail list at the bar for some real good gems here like hibsicus margarita made from scratch! Seriously super tasty! We started with the Packed Fries and did not regret it as the goulash gravy in these fries are super delicious and flavorful. It's almost like having pot roast on top of bed of french fries. For entrees we had the roasted pork shank on a bed of buttery mashed 'taters where the meat just fell off the bone as you moved your pork around to set up for the best bites. I had the Kranken burger with browned caramelized onions, delicious applewood bacon, and smothered in beer cheese that hit the spot! Another entree ordered was the Smoked Rachel that had smoked sauerkraut, tons of cheese, and turkey on a marbled rye bread! It slammed. Great service and so much detail and appreciation for the amount of care all the employees have to maintain a safe dining in experience. We hadn't had dine in for over 5 months and this was the best experience so far that we had where we were comfortably 6 feet away from everyone, spotless tables, and super kind and friendly service. Great spot and the patio looked nice and welcoming as well. What a great gem to find in Houston. If I lived in the neighborhood you bet your butt I would be a regulars here.

Becca G.

Yelp
Small local place in Meyerland with; nice wait staff, awesome food and drinks. We recommend this place

Yelp
Their version of German food was not to our liking. My card was kept for an open tab, the next day fraudulent charges were attempted on my account.

Yelp
It has been two years since my family and I visited Houston, on the last visit is when we first tried Watershed. It was booming our first visit, great food, great beer, and great service and the irony was that it was 2020. So on our return visit we decided we really wanted to have this place again. To our suprise it was quite what we were hoping for, the entire visit was almost a domino effect. We showed up on a Sunday (10/23/22) around 12:30 PM and were greeted by a young lady at the bar. We waited to be told were to directed were to sit, at that point we were the only ones besides the workers there. My husband had to go up to the bar for menus which I slightly recall doing before. After sitting for a bit we decided on few appetizers only to be told what we had chosen was out. So my husband returns to the table and we decided on something else only to be told that was out, but they could modify the dish. At this point when he returned, I said it was probably best to ask what they did have so we weren't wasting anymore time going back and forth on what to order. When he returned to the bar this time he was told they were out of a lot of items because of the previous days of people coming in to watch games. Finally were settle on a pretzel and meatballs. We did wait a bit for the items which I believe are made fresh, so its understandable. When they are the pretzel was good and came with both a butter and a spicy brown mustard. The meatballs weren't quite what I recall as far as texture, a little more bread than moist than before. For our entrees we both decided to keep and easy and not face anymore disappoint of something else being not available and went with pork schnitzel. When both plates arrived they both seemed to have been slightly burned. Because we were so hungry, we decided not to complain because of the time if had already taken to receive each dish. I think what did me in for the visit was being thirsty and asking for a cup of water only for the young lady to reply with the drink station was in the corner. Kinda hard to get anything to drink without a cup!? I found that odd because he service had been on and she had previously apologized for them being out of so many items. In the end, I understand places and people have their days so maybe this just was not their day. I hope we can maybe give them another chance at some point in the future because it was definitely a place we raved about!

Yelp
I was going to do some much needed grocery sale shopping and have seen this place on the corner. This wasn't the first time as I'm a Taco Tuesday type of gal, Tho that's another post lol. I looked on YELP so I could see what others have said, well hey not too much so let's go see what's going on. I already ate so wasn't that hungry, so I ordered ahead. ummmm Pretzel with beer sauce yes please. So, I picked up my pretzel it was ready in 10 min and everyone was so friendly. There wasn't many people there as it was just opening. I proceeded to open my container and this glorious glow came off the pretzel. I knew I was in for a tasty treat and I was right. It was so good, then I opened up the beer cheese. Now as it was to salty for me I know some that like it. So I definitely would go back for the more just not the cheese.
google avatar

Gary G.

Yelp
Outstanding service and food quantity are consistent every time I go here, probably monthly if not more. Reminiscent to a German fusion style of culinary cuisine. You do order at the counter, which is nice since I like setting my own pace. The food is delivered and they the front of the house checks in to make sure I have what I need.
google avatar

FaEll H.

Yelp
Ordered to go...fish and chips were great (to be fair I substituted sweet potato fries for the original chips, next time I'll try the chips). The smoked Reuben is also good, but I tend to prefer an original Reuben. But again, it's a good sandwich. The spinach salad is amazing, very good flavors there. Service was good, food was ready when I went in to pick up. Nice setting - there were families there when I went in but it was still calm and chill. Definitely going back. Hubby will likely try a burger next time...I'm going back in for the fish and chips and that spinach salad!

Yelp
i wasn't huge on this place overall. to place an order everyone has to go to the bar which was kinda unclear. the sandwich was ok. was disappointed in the taste of the brussels sprouts side. staff were nice tho.

Jada S.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and service. Good food and drinks. Fish and chips was a winner for me.
google avatar

Kevin M.

Yelp
Food was good. Atmosphere was descent. It's a good quick lunch....Not a great quick lunch. Strip center location. Good for kids after a ballgame, where parents drink type place, which I like.
google avatar

Naren S.

Yelp
A unique experience in our neighborhood to get German food. They also have a good drink selection. A lot of neighborhoods supported them through covid but unfortunately they often got our order wrong which is really sad when you think they'd be super careful with takeout only orders during a lockdown. Houston is a really big city and this is a busy neighborhood so you don't get the "everybody knows your name feel" for a local restaurant.
google avatar

Nicholas E.

Yelp
Watershed is a neat German spot. You order at the bar, the beer selection is mostly German- as is the food; schnitzel, pretzel, etc. the service is pretty quick and friendly.
google avatar

Marco V.

Yelp
Cool little neighborhood spot, great beer selection and a dog friendly patio. Been here quite a few times , very friendly staff.
google avatar

Kelly P.

Yelp
I don't often leave reviews, but as someone who often misses her great-grandmothers German cooking on a regular basis: this place won my heart!! I live in San Antonio, smack dab in the Texas "German Belt" and can't find food this authentic. The atmosphere is relaxed, and unassuming, making it a great place to grab a beer (from their extensive tap selection) after work or on a nice day sit out on the patio with a craft cocktail. The Pork Schnitzel sandwich was perfection. (I highly recommend adding the sauerkraut on top). Even the pickles tasted like grandmas.
google avatar

Yi W.

Yelp
It was yummy. Got the pork shank - tender, but sauce wasn't as good as mushroom sauce from the schnitzel. And could use a bit more salt. Good portion size. Schnitzel was delicious. The outside was very crispy and the entire chicken was tender and flavorful. Mushroom sauce perfect. The cabbage was a little sour and so so.
google avatar

Iska W.

Yelp
This is such a great local spot. The food is consistently amazing - they make everything in house. The counter service is always great. My teenagers and I really like the casual vibe. Great beers on tap too!

Yelp
Was recently in town visiting in-laws and had to make a stop at Watershed, one of their favorite restaurants. It did not disappoint! The four of us ordered something like 10 different dishes so we could sample a little bit of everything and it was all so good. My faves were the Pretzel Bites (Watershed should bottle that cheese sauce!!!), Spätzle that reminded me of my childhood...the homemade Spätzle made by my German grandfather. yum! And I also loved the fish and chips, sausage sampler, and cabbage rolls. These are not easy dishes to do well, but Watershed nails it. The fish was crispy and perfectly seasoned. The sausages ("Best of the Wurst") were tender and flavorful. Fun, friendly place with creative, delicious food. We plan to go back when we are back in town so we can try other items on the menu.

C. B.

Yelp
Good large pretzel, fun selection of beers. I wish there were more options for dessert
