A slice of peace bobbing gently on Regent's Canal in Little Venice, the Waterside Cafe is a narrowboat with room for 15 or so inside plus another 15 seats at the half dozen aluminum tables and chairs outside. The setting is about as nice as it gets in central London: a stone's throw from Westway and Paddington Station or a stroll from Regent's Park or Lords cricket ground. Here, your only stress is fending off the pigeons who'll pretty much join you for your breakfast right as you're trying to eat it.
And who can blame them? The menu isn't lavish but the food is fresh, tasty and beautifully cooked. Omelettes would seem to be a specialty and my tomato / yellow pepper choice arrived hot, fluffy, without a hint of grease and with a perfectly dressed salad on the side. Cameron, a full English breakfast aficionado, said his was one of the best he'd ever had. I enquired after the home made looking sausage in hopes of forming an opinion first hand but it disappeared along with the grille-marked bacon, beans, egg and toast before I could press the point.
I see that people have complained about the service and although we had nothing to complain about ourselves I could sense the Waterside Cafe should not be confused with the other Waterside (at Bray). This place is all about the setting and the honest, fresh food. No loos, though loos are just a 2-minute walk away, and no wifi. But you're on a boat, goddammit, and if you want hot and cold running internet or any other jazz go to a pub or a sports bar or something. Here you'll just find peace. OK, and pigeons.
