Philly’s Newest Wawa Has an Opening Date - Eater Philly

"Philly’s newest Wawa, going into 2131 South Street right at the corner of 22nd and South, is officially opening April 12. The date coincides with Wawa Day, marking the anniversary of Wawa’s first store opening in 1964. To celebrate Wawa Day, every store in the entire chain will be giving away free coffee on April 12, including the brand-new South Street location." - Rachel Vigoda

I ordered a few things from this store last night, including fries (extra cheese with pickles and chicken strips) at 11 pm last night, and this is what showed up at my door 30 minutes later. Cold and soggy, stuck together fries. It had some sort of....'cheese' on it, but i believe it was just a slice they sent through the merrychef because they were too lazy to make a fresh batch! At least have the driver call the customer and explain to them, instead of pissing on the company values and processes.

Google
The customer service is horrible. They messed up my Wawa order and when I called about it I received attitude and a hang up. Food was burnt

Wawa on South Street, you know, it’s one of those spots you want to love for the convenience. It’s got the essentials, but man, it could use a little TLC. The shelves? Often looking a bit bare, like they could use a good restock. And the crew, they’re not bad folks, but sometimes you just wish they’d throw a smile your way. It’s not asking for much, just a bit more spark to make the place shine. It’s got potential, just needs a bit of that Philly spirit to bring it to life.

Google
Bought a hoagie. Store clearly has bathrooms said they are not open to public. Pretty sure you have to have a public bathroom with deli and food service in Philadelphia.

I want to give a huge shoutout to Shelly at the Wawa on South Street in Philadelphia for her absolutely incredible customer service. From the moment I walked in, she greeted me with genuine warmth and made the entire experience feel personal and uplifting. In a world where good service can feel rare, Shelly stood out for her patience, attentiveness, and positive energy. She went out of her way to help me with my order, made great recommendations, and made sure everything was perfect before I left. You can tell she truly cares about the customers and takes pride in her work. It’s small gestures like hers that turn a quick store visit into a memorable experience. Wawa, you’ve got a star on your team. Thank you, Shelley ! Keep Shining 💯🙏🏽

Google
Friendly employees and clean, but every time I come here there are homeless panhandlers who insist on opening the door for me as I enter and exit. Why is this store unable or unwilling to keep people from loitering? Maybe they need to switch to sliding glass doors that can’t be held by a person

Google
Go to this store 2-3 times a week, for a Vanilla Cappuccino. Machine has been broken for the last month, today I go and get an Original Cappuccino, and got Hot Chocolate. This location is really making WAWA look bad, do better.

Dionisio Mignacca

Google
Worst experience ever, told by the employees you don’t need to shop here. WAWA needs to do a better job. I simply asked if the register was open since he walked away from the only station that was open.

Yelp
They need to clean their store! The sidewalk outside is absolutely disgusting, you feel gross walking on it even while wearing shoes. Well enough walk into the store.

Jeff L.

Yelp
The service for food is terrible. The orders are carelessly put together and the portions are always different every time you go. My most recent chicken steak wrap was as small as a hot dog bun with barely any chicken. The best service you get from here is from the homeless guy that stands outside and opens the door for you and asks for change. It's sad that the center city Wawa's have no standards compared to the ones in the suburbs. Also, it's a disgrace how much people get away with theft at this Wawa. High-school kids & homeless act like it's their mom's pantry casually walking through the store picking what drinks/snacks they want and walk out without paying a dime. They even have the nerve to stand outside the building and eat what they have stolen because they know theirs no consequences.

Yelp
Disclaimer: I did not order food from this Wawa and most of the complaints about this location seem to be about the food service. Here's are the highlight of this Wawa: PROs: - VERY CLEAN: this Wawa is new and they have one a good job of keeping it fresh inside - GREAT LOCATION: I love that this Wawa is mainly one you walk to - when I was growing up Wawas were only in the 'burbs and its surreal to see them on blocks in the city CONs: - SELECTION: stock looked low for most of their prepared foods - which I think is the main draw of Wawa these days - SERVICE: the line was seven people long when I went to check out and there didn't seem to be any urgency by the staff to get another cashier All in all, not the best Wawa but very convenient so I'm sure you'll use it. I would try to hit it early or during non-peak hours.

David S.

Yelp
Took 20 minutes to get a hot chocolate and it's not even busy... there's a Starbucks right across the street I should have just gone there but it wasn't busy so I thought ok give it a shot, nope sorry fool me once... don't bother going here unless you have time to waste

Ana M.

Yelp
absolutely LOVE this facility. terrific lighting but a rather putrid smell that seems to stick to my clothing. from my own personal experience, do not come here if you've already partaken in your biweekly shower. the smell WILL linger. however if you do happen to trip and fall through the door, make sure you snag a soft pretzel.

Yelp
Muy mal servició uno vas a comprar algo y de paso le dije puedo usar el baños por favor y me dijieron que no eso nose ase y mas a un costumer increíble

Yelp
Couple of gears to grind with this location. There is regulary someone asking for a handout on the street corner and I do not mean a homeless person in need just someone trying to gather money for yeah you get the point. The service is okay most of the time but I do find it werid that when you pay for your hot meal order with your number slip the cashier does not offer you a plastic bag? You have to ask and they never mark your order number paid? Not convenient and a corner that I think is pretty unwise to cut from a business perspective. As far as the food - I ordered the Chicken Qusadilla's with added vegetables and the item looked like a mess opening it up (chicken all to one side of the qusadilla literally filled with cheese no veggies, no chicken. I went back and got a salad later in the day, it was actually quite good for the crispy BLT chicken salad but at $8 plus dollars it had me thinking I need to start prepping meals at home. Wawa is very convenient but I feel once you can walk about from the habit of going to Wawa a part of you evolves. Hey, I guess its better then ruining your body with fast food though right ; ) As always people SYOY!

Yelp
I order sub sandwiches from this Wawa pretty frequently and never have any issues. The check out staff hasn't always been the most pleasant but the food service employees are always great. Seems to always be busy and for the most part very clean.

Yelp
So this is definitely not a flagship location. It's a bit on the small side, but is still decently well-spaced and still nice. I give it 4 stars mainly for its location, because if it were not for this wawa, you are in a proverbial wawa "Dessert" in south philly past broad. This location is filling a serious gap, so I commend its existence

Yelp
Yea no this is 1 star now seriously HIRE MORE PEOPLE. Get it together, this is too long to wait Been here for 15 min finally got told theres another 10 MINUTES TO WAIT. Thanks for the info Guys it has taken 30 freaking minutes to get my food

Bryan W.

Yelp
Vaughn really made my experience great. Positive attitude at work and works hard during long hours. Great employee and made my night in the short time I was there. Thank you! Other wawas do not compete!

Brian F.

Yelp
I get done work at 5am and wind up at this Waw around 5:30. It doesn't matter what I order, there's always something missing. TodY it was the cheese on my omlette. Last time it was the cheese on my sandwich. I cheese. This is the worst!!!!!!

Yelp
First time to Philly visiting a friend and needed a quick bite. Never been to a Wawa before but my experience was impressive. The food buying process was quick and automated. The sandwich actually tasted decently for the price. I have seen others give it a lower rating compared to other wawas, unfortunately I can not compare on that scale. But as a convenient store, I thought it was very convenient especially if you need a late nite bite. I got the quesadilla, it was a bit messy but tasted delicious and was able to carry me over between meals.

Yelp
This is a newish Wawa and didn't disappoint. I was staying at a nearby Airbnb so I came here several times throughout the week to get various items and meals. It's an average size Wawa, clean and the service was solid. All of the hoagies I got were made well and the soft pretzels were fresh. They have various fresh fruit you can grab that is both cut up in containers or also laying out by the check out counter (bananas, apples, etc.). My only complaint is that they need a few kinds of better loaves of bread as well as almond milk. I know they are limited on space at this location though. They are open 24/7 which is also a perk.

Yelp
Classic Wawa location near Fitler Square - gets lots of foot traffic so they can often run out of ingredients for turkey bowls and such but the staff is pretty nice.

Yelp
I've had multiple issues with ordering online for delivery and pick up. It's to the point where I'm taking it personally. From missing items to stuff never showing up. It's a shame because it's a great location. Wish they would get their act together.

Jack R.

Yelp
This is the worst wawa I have ever been to. My order took over an hour to be made and I ordered two items and there were only 5 people in the store.

Yelp
Bomb as always. Wawa clutch 24/7! Especially during hoagie fest for 5 bucks! Get it however u like everything is up to u!

Yelp
I'm always at a WaWa. Lol. I have no issues here. It's clean. The staff is friendly & the location is on point!!! Glad they added this location!!!

Yelp
They never make sizzles. Other then mornings every-time I order a sandwich takes forever with people just not paying attention "working" ...I had to update my review. By far the worst service wawa. I'll order a sandwich or expresso shot and just watch EVERYONE Ignore it and keep on going on with her doing laughing and talking but not looking at the screen three days in a row I had to remind him about my espresso shot after five minutes of waiting and no one making anything not even like they're busy just oblivious of customers

Yelp
The staff is great, but the pastry is stale. I let it pass a few times, but I called corporate this am. Not that great a response.

Corey M.

Yelp
First off the service stinks with coffee is weak who's ever preparing that coffee or setting up the coffee containers having no care attitude each time I've showed up there the coffee was weak or watered down it's just horrible the management has a very foul attitude she's just a kid herself and very unprofessional they need to remove the management and bring in new employees it's some kind of playhouse there this business is in shambles if you value your business who's ever in charge regional manager step in and make sure that your customers are happy by retraining these people or bringing in some new people that actually like helping people because when you call these people over for service or help as I am a retired service man for my country I'm retired Marine and disabled and these people have such a disgusting attitude it ain't even funny and I'll tell you something who's ever charged you need to correct these people or either fire them because they're going to send Wawa straight to the poor house I've been watching them for the past couple of months and each time I come in there I'm shaking my head and it's just a disgrace because the manager is sneaky and conniving and so is her employees that's a very bad combination you see you can fool some people some of the time but not all of the time and and investigation really needs to be done here people I urge you don't go in there for anything unless you want to get pissed off or until these people fix this problem this is August 16th 2022 and I am posting this because I've had numerous problems with these people unprovoked just coming in for customer service and this is the thanks that I get for patronizing this business it's a slap in my face and a waste of my time please folks reconsider or if you have any further issues contact the corporate office at Wawa or posted on this app expose that behavior thank you

Yelp
A great addition to South Street! This wawa is large and clean and still a hidden gem to some extent. I think the To-Order counter employees are still getting up to speed but all in all, excited to have this wawa in the neighborhood.

Yelp
worst wawa ever! there was so much wrong with the new 22nd and south location in philadelphia that corporate needs to come in. worst sandwich. nothing was prepared correctly or even cut. slow service and just standing around and not working. they need to fix this store immediately!
google avatar

Steve B.

Yelp
Food quality good but staff need to pay attention. Order tuna sub but got Italian (which I can't eat). When I called, they asked if I was the "hot turkey that got the wrong sandwich?". No, so apparently two other people didn't get right order either. The add ons (lettuce etc) to sandwich were correct but Italian instead of tuna---READ THE SLIP!! Also, cashier station ALWAYS understaffed. You are taking the "convenience" out of convenience store. BTW: called Wawa corporate months ago about staffing and long waits, I guess they don't care. Will go back to local sandwich shops.

Chris L.

Yelp
I came here again to get the same exact order they messed up in my last review, but this time they got the side right but gave me the wrong sub! How is this possible!? Side note - The sub they gave me was still pretty good, but again not what I ordered!

Sean C.

Yelp
I order delivery from this location often, as I like the range of items (especially drinks) I can get. But I have to say that I have NEVER had an order come to me correct - sometimes minor, but often major. Like entire sandwiches clearly switched from other orders. It's almost comical ... almost.

Angela D.

Yelp
Absolutely disgusting. Hoagies are often made very sloppy and they never seem to get the order right. Only recommend it if you're going between 1am-4am, thats the only crew who can get things right.

Bob B.

Yelp
Tried a dozen times to order sandwiches here; They NEVER have gotten the order right. Missing mayo, uncalled for spinach, wrong bread... and it takes so LONG to make a sandwich. Is it that hard? Sorry, but today was the last time. Goodbye neighborhood Wawa.

Phil D.

Yelp
This location does not answer their phone. There's no directory menu-- just a generic voice recording which does not state name of business or any business hours or relevant info. Recording confuses & actually makes business seem illegitimate. After a few rings, recording states nobody is answering (really?) & then disconnects. This is a joke-- especially since they've charged my debit card for an order that they have been preparing for over an hour (which obviously isn't coming.)

Micah M.

Yelp
I love Wawa, but feel as if the city locations tend to struggle and this one has been no exception since it's opening a few weeks ago. The food preparation tends to be very slow and seems a bit unorganized. The store also has been messy more often than not. But hey, it's Wawa. I give this place more patience than I do for any other establishment.

Yelp
Just opened on 4/12 - I arrived on opening day and got a free tshirt that I've barely taken off in 4 days...its spectacular. I returned today with my husband to grab lunch and they definitely need to work out some kinks in the food preparation department. I wanted to order the chipotle club that I've ordered from other Wawa's plenty of times but club sandwiches were not on the menu. Instead, I ordered a turkey sandwich on toasted bread with cheese, chipotle sauce, bacon, and lettuce (I would of added tomato but they didn't have any apparently). My husband ordered a hoagie and buffalo mac & cheese. While we were paying, the woman making our sandwiches started yelling our number. We went over and she asked if we meant to select buffalo mac or if we wanted regular. We told her buffalo and she kept making the sandwiches. This should of been a sign to just get the regular. She called our number again a few minutes later and stated she forgot about the mac. She put the mac & cheese in the medium cup and then proceeded to squirt basically half a bottle of buffalo sauce into the cup. She put the lid on without mixing it or anything. It really looked unappetizing and had no love. We walked home, sat down to eat, and to no surprise my sandwich was missing the lettuce, wasn't toasted, and was loaded with chipotle sauce. The other sandwich was good. Wawa in general should always get 5 stars, but this one gets 3 for the time being. I'll definitely be back to use the free atm and grab snacks, but I think I'll steer clear of the hoagies/hot food until the employees are a little more experienced or actually care about reading what you order. Oh, and I just realized she didn't give me the pickles I asked for on the side! DARNIT!
