Where to Eat Near American University | Eater DC

"The Tenleytown Wawa instantly drew a stream of AU students, Wilson High kids, and local customers upon opening 2019. The Philly-based chain is known for its lineup of hoagies, sandwiches, coffee, and snacks that include Philly-style soft pretzels and Tastykake baked pies." - Vinciane Ngomsi

Cult Convenience Mart Wawa Heads to Tenleytown - Eater DC

"Regional chain Wawa is continuing its march across the District, signing a lease for a 7,000-square-foot spot in Tenleytown. Washington Business Journal reports that the “more neighborhood-centric” location, which follows the downtown shop which debuted late last year and the 24/7 Columbia Heights outpost replacing the flagship Pete’s New Haven pizza, is projected to open by early 2019." - Warren Rojas

literally floored by the customer service. Went here last night needing a pickle pizza and good vibes sooo bad. Dante, Malachi and Jermaine were DOLLS. They were so helpful. I don’t wanna get them stuck in midnights shifts but those men bring the vibes at night. Can’t say enough good things about them. we had a ball.

This was by far the worst WaWa experience I have had thus far. I ordered online through Grubhub and what I received I was totally disappointed with. It’s a simple matter of reading an order and doing your job. Or refunding the order if you can’t fulfill what’s requested. I asked for a honey smoked turkey sub on a shorti roll, with provolone cheese, onions, extra mayo, oil, etc. Usually WaWa fills you sub with lots of meat. This particular day they did NOT. I got my $11+ shorti roll with little to no meat, no onions, and double American cheese, no oil and no mayo. It’s nothing like having a taste for something, spend all that extra money to get it and the order is jacked up!! Like read the paper!! They always want to adjust the order or give a refund NO!! I want my food I paid for. We can exchange the wrong order for the right order. I was upset. I had to cut my own onions and add my oil and mayo! The cheese I just threw out!! All that dern cheese on my sandwich! I didn’t ask for double cheese!!

I had a TERRIFIC experience at Wawa at Tenelytown late last night. I was helping an after prom party nearby. Their catering coffee vendor had a mix up and couldn't come. Sam and the staff at Wawa were amazing, helping us put together a very large amount of coffee jugs and all the other necessary items, milks, creams, sugar in very short amount of time -- with enough to serve 150 kids! Sam and the team were so helpful, kind and and creative in getting us the last minute large amount of coffee for an event in such a short amount of time, with a smile and amazing servcie!

Google
Where, when and how you get your app order is ALWAYS a mystery. I stopped getting food here because I dont like standing around with people ignoring me. On multiple occasions I've watched somebody make my order set it aside. Never call a number and let me stand there for 5 minutes and then they're like are you waiting for something? It's patently absurd and why I stopped coming here because I don't have a half hour to get lunch. That's why I came here in the first place.

Can I say that some of these employees have the worst attitude! I was going to literally rate this place a 1 star if it wasn’t for one associate in particular. Her name is Dora or something like that. Wonderful bright and peppy individual. She helped me figure out how to do my order and made great suggestions. I initially thought she was the only one in the store as I didn’t see any other associate. She rung me up. Pleasant conversation. Then she even made me my food and drink. Fairly quickly. It was delicious! There must be a management problem or something there. How is it there was only one associate doing everything in there? Lucky it wasn’t busy as it was early morning. By the time she was done with my sandwich I maybe saw another 2 people come out. They didn’t say hi to me or anything and were dripping with an attitude of they rather be somewhere else. You can tell a lot about a place if they are like this. If anyone in corporate see this please fix this location. It’s a nice area and close to my work. But why seem like you don’t like the job so much and treat others this way. Ms. Dora was amazing in such an environment. Get better. Best to avoid this Wawa during school hours.

Google
I wish I could give two separate reviews on this place. -the weekday crew in the afternoon is on point and very helpful -the weekend people around 6-7am are very rude and just stare at you as I try to keep my distance on the weekends to avoid the unwelcome mood that is set. Then when I am helped on the weekday mornings it's how can I help. There have been countless times I want to walk out but yet I stay to endure the rachet attitude they carry. Hire people that want to work ends without those who carry a negative attitude.

Kimberly did amazing on my drink and even helped make it better when I had complaints. Amazing service!!

Yelp
I order from the wawa up tenlytown and when I was ordering my food I asked for extra cream cheese and they gave a one fucking slab of cream cheese on fucking bagel when I asked specifically for extra fucking cream cheese the fuck

Yelp
Absolutely pathetic business - ordered a cheesesteak, chips, and two drinks on Uber Eats. What they delivered was just one of the drinks - and told the Uber Eats driver that "that was the order". Uber Eats is refusing to refund the order due to Wawa's incompetence to cancel the order or make the actual food. The fact that the Better Business Bureau or any other government commission hasn't shut this business down is beyond me. I have been to this store several times in the past - the management, workers, and security pay no attention to detail and the value of their customers. DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE AGAIN - THEY WILL SCAM YOU AND NOT REFUND YOU

Yelp
They should just close between the stealing going on and lack of staff. They could not offer made to order coffees at lunchtime today due to lack of staff.

Yelp
I ordered an Italian roll with certain ingredients. They made my sandwich how they wanted it

Yelp
I've been using this place for about 2 years now, and while they are not always the greatest, I am sure that has something to do with the location, I will admit that I was so happy with the service I got this morning. I asked for 2 packs of my normal smokes, the sales woman this morning was the first ever, in 2 years, to say let me check the back... as my preferred cigs where sold out up front... she came back about 10 mins later with 2 boxes and said "fresh off the truck" I was so happy and so impressed I bought 4pks instead of my normal 2pks and they weren't stale... the store is still about the same... and there are several things that are usually sold out... but all in all, I was so happy with my service this morning, I chose to upgrade my review and my stars.

Yelp
I want to start by saying that I LOVE Wawa. I've been to locations in other states and have almost always had stellar experiences. I thought I would immediately fall in love with this place since they're pretty close by and one of only a few late night food options in the area. Unfortunately, this location isn't quite there yet. The first time I went, I wanted a Gobbler (hoagie with hot turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce). They were out of stuffing so I had to get a version with mashed potatoes. It took way longer than it should have; there appeared to be only one person working behind the deli, and only one cashier. The sandwich was actually pretty good but the wait time wasn't OK. The second time I went I was also craving a Gobbler like the previous time. This time they had all the ingredients so I could get the one I wanted; unfortunately, I still had to wait way longer than I should have because they were way understaffed. This location sees a lot of traffic; it's a block from the Metro, the AU shuttle bus stop is literally in front of the store, and if you go at night parking is plentiful. Maybe it's just the volume of traffic, but this location seemed kind of dirty and unkept both times I visited. I'm hoping they can get their act together soon. I love Wawa and I think they have the potential to do really well at this location. I'm also thrilled to have a 24 hour food option pretty close by. So Wawa has earned 3 stars for now.

Yelp
You have to give a new store a little time to work out the kinks. This location has been open more than a month and this is certainly not Wawa's first time in DC. Service is incredibly slow. Even if you order on the app (which took several uninstalls and reinstalls to get working), there is still a 15-20 minute wait in the store. The queue situation to pay at the checkout is a clusterf***. They designed and built this store from scratch but couldn't have laid out a better intuitive line-up process for the cashiers? Man, how I was looking forward to this store. So far, early morning coffee is the only thing you can run in and grab quickly. And that is before 8am.

Yelp
Went to get soup for my lunch break, it took so long 10+ minutes for them to prepare it that I didn't have time to eat it on my break. Don't know what's going on over there lately but the service has been subpar; gonna be a while before I go back if ever

Yelp
I was starving and came across this Wawa's. I was so excited.... until I opened this soggy sandwich (which also had a bad smell). The onions I believe were old. Also the customer service could use a little work!

Yelp
Hands down the best little store around. It's about time we get an affordable quality shop in this location.

Yelp
Wawa's are generally great - this one, even though still kinda new, isn't. When they're out of something you get a terrible attitude from disinterested/untrained staff who are more into yelling at other staff people than customers. I had a very good first trip there right after opening - very promising - but the shine has come off considerably each successive visit. Hard time keeping it clean with all the high schoolers and metro foot traffic, but at least TRY - and who's in charge of inventory and menu verification? More than once, they didn't have something they had the day before but was still on the ordering tablet. What should make it easy and quick makes it trying and slow! I implore management to straighten out their staffing problems - it's not every one (one young lady was helpful but got blank stares from others), obviously, but more than enough to spoil the bunch. I know hiring is a volatile business, but the owners/corporate supervisors should really look into how this place is run before everyone in the area is turned off.

Yelp
I'm so disappointed at how dirty this place is in our upscale neighborhood. There's no other establishment that looks like this.

Yelp
I go here most days! Today I got the breakfast quesadilla: Taste: 4.5/5 Presentation: 3/5 While the breakfast quesadilla is sure to get your morning going, the filling is mostly in the middle. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty.

Yelp
Oof. I love Wawa, but this place is really bad. Ordered a tuna sandwich, waited for 15-20 minutes only to have the clerk tell me she lost my ticket (while laughing? No apology) and have me repeat what I had ordered. When I got the sandwich to my office (5 minutes later), I opened it and the bread was stale/hard as a rock (like I literally can't bite through it), sweet peppers were weird/floppy, flavored coffee tastes like a cup full of syrup flavoring. Pretty gross food and really bad service.

Yelp
I was so excited to be getting a Wawa close to work, but the three times I've been there I've walked away disappointed. For being brand new, the store is always so dirty and unkept. Trash everywhere and the bathroom smells like piss. A majority of the employees are also rude and make it obvious they don't care about you or your order. There will be 10 people standing around waiting for their orders while the cooks are just bullshitting with each other. Last time I ordered, the lady didn't even call out my number so it sat on the counter for 15 minutes until I decided to rummage through the bag to see if it's my order. Get your shit together Wawa, you have a name to live up to!!

Yelp
I am a former employee at this location. I was one of the overnight supervisors before they let me go over jealousy. I'm telling you please don't order anything at the deli. they serve customers expired food. they don't change their gloves when making sandwiches. they serve customer sometimes uncooked bread. they use the same food utensils to clean the oven. they also used glass cleaner to wash dishes. the deli workers be on their phone overnight wearing jackets making your food. I have pictures to prove what im saying.

Yelp
I went to this Wawa this weekend. The employees were nice instead of the deli worker they messed up my order and they did not even give me anything for messing up my order. Next IF YOU WANT YOUR EARDRUMS BlONE OUT come here the music was SO LOUD and its horrible and it did not keep not keep the homeless people out there is too much loitering. Finally I was greeted by a snarky manager 1 star is nice im not coming back until they fix there service

Yelp
Stay away from this location. Unfortunately, like Georgetown, this Wawa is pretty shitty. However, between the two this one is worse. Wawa has some problems as a company but the biggest issues are amplified by the horrible staff in Tenleytown. There are maybe 3 good employees. The others, with a few in particular, are - racist, incompetent, rude, lazy, dishonest, and worst of all scamming. A FEW Examples: Racist - one staffer literally confused two males, presumably because they both had some asian features. One male was around 5'11"-6' 160lbs (guessing), wearing a red jacket and jeans and the other was 5' 8"ish maybe 200lbs and wearing black. They looked completely different, body shape, size and clothes, and even their faces and hair were very different. And she legit acted like they were the same person, non-sarcastically (not that it would be okay if it was sarcastic). Incompetent - one staffer could not operate the register, they said they didn't know how to operate the register, and they refused to provide service because of it. Their literal words, "I don't know how to do that, so we can't do that today." Rude - staffers will consistently tell customers to not bother them - when asking for basic things - like to check out etc. and tell them off, sometimes cursing. No words. Lazy - it might be a shocker here, but often the staff do not work at their stations or refuse to do their job because they are talking on their cellphone, watching something on their cellphone or texting. Most of these examples also highlight others, like the employees who just refused service cause they didn't want to put in the effort of figuring out what they didn't know how to do or getting someone else who did. Dishonest - several staffers have repeatedly lied about Wawa policies and DC law, unclear as to why, but nonetheless unacceptable. Scamming - this is the final kicker, and to me what floored me the most, I have seen at least two of the staffers try to scam customers, at first I sort of brushed it off, I usually noticed them doing a weird run around with charges at checkout etc, but later I noticed when one of them said someone had to pay cash they pocketed the cash when the person walked away. Now maybe they later put it in the register, and what they made them pay was their actual bill, but I doubt it. This is the reason why I am even bothering to write this and also to report them to relevant authorities. Hopefully people see this and avoid going and this doesn't happen to anymore people. Or hopefully Wawa management or authorities step in and stop this. So again, avoid like the plague.

Yelp
The service was amazing and the sandwich was perfect unlike 14th street which was rude and the sandwich was nasty. Perhaps the wonderful staff here can go help them out. They are courteous , they are fast and make great sandwiches. The place is very clean and friendly.

Yelp
I ordered a chicken hoagie and came home to see there was beef instead of chicken. Extremely extremely upset. Donuts are good though

Yelp
I know this place is new of a couple of months but how slow can you be? Also unlike the one in VA the flavor of my ice coffee is a joke. They ask you do you want more flavor? Uh yeah, I wanna taste my mocha and not have to pay extra for flavor buy for all they are nice so I guess that's what matters

Scott B.

Yelp
This place has gotten better in last couple years, very friendly staff. However, it was closed today 13 June '21 at noon?!?!?! Don't know if it's permanently closed or just something that happened today. Website says it's open.

K L.

Yelp
Just don't order from here; save yourself the soggy bread, cold food, missing ingredients; need I say more. If I could rate this zero, I totally would!

Yelp
If you want to see what the butthole of customer service and humanity looks like come to this WAWA. On July 3rd 2020 at 5:30 pm I learned just how crappy this place was when I walked into WAWA with an eye emergency that was extremely painful and it was obvious. I asked several of the attendees for help to use their restroom so I could see what was wrong and a napkin to wipe my eye and was told the restrooms were closed for cleaning (I just needed the mirror), no one had a mirror (four women attendees but no one had a compact). They all sat there like spoiled, selfish, ambivalent cunts. Customer service at its deplorably worst. My husband meanwhile was a paying customer- so it was is not as if I was a vagabond off the street. Seeing these employees made me fear for the next generation- if this is what it looks like the world will be a scary place. Spoiled gross self-absorbed brats.

Persequi B.

Yelp
I'm so excited Wawa came to the DC metro area but this location is meh...I took the H4 bus all the way from Brookland to Tenleytown (long ride) to try their breakfast. I ordered breakfast food on the kiosk and paid my order. After paying I was informed that the food I ordered was out of stock. Then the manager gave me attitude when they had to issue me a refund. I will not patronize this location again due to poor inventory management.

Yelp
This WAWA has potential. I mean it's a WAWA. Good sandwiches, 24 hours all that good stuff without the fast food oil! Unfortunately the staff as you can see in many reviews are lacking any real love for their job. Bathrooms are filthy, lines are way too long, often out of what should be in stock, employees are yelling at each other and cursing at each other, no attention to detail. Whomever owns/manages this location shows serious lack of customer service or care for their staff or our neighborhood or any of the typical fabulous WAWA experiences! I mean what is going on! This is upper NW and we do not deal with such nonsense as nobody should be....but we really don't. This yelp page is not even claimed and nobody is responding to customers.......that's says it's all! I personally will be watching and taking pics and hope that with much assistance from the neighborhood this WAWA can be what most WAWAS are.
