Wawel Royal Castle Polish Bar & Restaurant

Our family just celebrated my father-in-law’s 85th birthday at Wawel and it was perfect in every way. Trevor thoughtfully arranged our seating and even set up a cake table without us asking. Margie brought so much joy with her good wishes upon our arrival, and Jessie & Bernadetta provided friendly and fabulous service all evening. The meals were delicious and the dill pickle soup is truly the best ever. Our family & friends agree that we couldn’t have asked for better Polish food or ambiance as we celebrated our amazing dad/Dziadek.

This is a Polish restaurant located inside the Polish American Cultural Center. Named after the Wawel Royal Castle in Krakow, it serves authentic Polish fare. First time having dill pickle soup, really good. Entrees were a selection of pierogis, potato pancakes, and a huge kielbasa sausage sandwich. All very good and definitely Polish!!

Delicious and authentic Polish food, great atmosphere, and kind staff. Many choices of food and drinks. We enjoyed Polish rosół (chicken noodle soup), which was absolutely amazing! Also, pork chops with mashed potatoes and coleslaw were delicious. It all definitely hit the spot. Furthermore, they have Polish beer and other drinks to complete the meal. Best Polish Food around!

Mini Potato pancakes appetizers with 4 different toppings the size of dessert plates. All are delicious. Tuna sandwich with fries well seasoned no need to add salt or pepper. Tea spot on. The atmosphere was calming, beautiful and relaxing. Margie was the most awesomeness server, respectful, pleasant and helpful. This was our first time there, but it won't be our last. They knocked it out of the park. Plenty of variety also had vegan options. Parking lot was large and handicapped paces. Lovely exterior. Also they have carry out and catering on premises. I highly recommend Wawel Royal Castle Polish Bar & Restaurant you can even tour the castle.

Absolutely perfect from start to finish! Food was spot on and because of my background and family traditions I am a very harsh critic! Max was an incredible waiter probably the best one we’ve ever had at any restaurant. We had the dill pickle soup, the Polish platter and a raspberry lemon drop dessert - everything was a 10 out of 10. The entire staff worked as a team, first time here definitely not the last.

My wife and I had our weekly Saturday date night dinner here. Very nice wood panel decor. Excellent and authentic Polish cuisine. Great service. Generous portions and good value. They had a Jazz trio playing. Great time. Highly recommended.

Wawel has terrific food! The dill pickle soup is so good, as are the potato pancakes. Everything we've ever had from there has been excellent. We highly recommend making a stop here. No pictures of food but here are a few pictures from the restaurant.

Visit Wawel to be transported back to Poland. We love the “Feast” which gets two people Polish pork chops, kielbasa and kapusta, golabski, Polish meatballs, city chicken, pierogi and mashed potatoes with potato pancakes. Heavenly food for a small investment.

My parents ordered takeout from here a couple nights ago, food was okay. This place has done a good job fixing up the interior over the last couple of years, it used to look super depressing inside

I'm a fan of Wawel. Their food is homey and comforting. Their prices are reasonable, refreshing in our inflationary times. Food quantity is just right, ample but not overwhelming. The staff is nice. I usually get carry-out from here and it is packaged well. My recent faves are the lightly-breaded Lake Perch with two sides; I get french fries and the cucumber salad, which has a yummy white sauce with dill. However, I also love their pierogi (I have them add caramelized onions). If you are a Polish food fan, there will be a lot here for you. The dine-in experience is enjoyable, too. It's an open, spacious, comfortable room with a relaxing, unpretentious atmosphere. I feel blessed to have Wawel nearby.

Unfortunately I am so disappointed. Viennese Schnitzel was not thin but rubbery and chewy. Cucumber salad was spoiled. I wanted the refund, and I was told, they cannot do it. Bussing tables was terrible. We were sitting there and waitresses were running their own show, not making an eye contact. Our dirty dishes were sitting on the table too long, not being picked up. I complained, but not a remorse or apology but such comment: " But other people like it"...oh gosh! What a behavior! Lots of dishes were fried, just don't bother to go there.

The Polish meal was very delicious and service outstanding! I highly recommend Wawel Restaurant!

Every time we visit Wawel we leave full, happy, and wanting to come back again. You just feel like you are going to be served good home cooked food upon entering. There are many places in the Metro are serving up Polish cuisine. Some are good and some are just not quite as much. Wawel should be on your stop in to eat and visit list. We have been here many times (Many more than the number of check-ins I have). Each time the food has been excellent. The Dill soup is a great starter. A personal favorite are the potato pancakes. They never taste or feel greasy as they can tend to be at other establishments. The prices are affordable and excellent for the nice portions you receive. For the main entrees your soup is included in the price, which is not always the case at other restaurants. Do take the time to look and walk on the walls and displays for the history on display.

Went inside this last weekend to see what the food was about. Being half polish, I had a craving for some food from the old country. I ordered the Wawel plate with kopytka, meatballs, breaded cutlet and mash with gravy. Was NOT disappointed. My wife got the petition assortment and was delighted to see they included the sweet cheese pierogis as well. This is a place where you would want to take your grandmother, or your wife to a nice, home-cooked meal.

Adjacent to a ballroom in the American Polish Center is a charming and unpretentious restaurant with authentic Polish dishes. The decor is comfortable and the staff is outstanding. The food is filling. I had beets, sauerkraut, veal schnitzel and cabbage soup. A polish stout was delicious and so was the eclair I had for dinner. My wife had a combination plate and enjoyed it all. We licked our plates when no one was watching.

Still amazing food! The service this time was a bit slow, but it was worth it for the food. Noah was an amazing server! This was my first experience with Polish food and it won't be my last! Everything was delicious! I got the combination plate for a taste of everything and it was worth it!

Visited Wawel for the first time for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. I had the potato pancake special with Dill Pickle Soup. The Dill Pickle soup was good, as well as the sausage that came with the special. Those were the highlights. The potato pancakes had a different consistency, and the potato pierogis were standard, not great not bad. Overall my food was good. My boyfriend ordered the polish sliders with the beef barley soup. The sliders were incredibly greasy and the beef barley soup was pretty bland. The waitress was very kind. The atmosphere of the restaurant itself was odd. It was INCREDIBLY quiet. Almost to the point where it was uncomfortable. They need to have some music playing or something to make it feel less awkward. But again the people were very nice and the food was decent. Would come again to check out the stuffed cabbage.

We got our food to go. We sat at the bar while we waited and really enjoyed our bartender/hostess. The food was okay, my wife got the pork chop and I got the stuffed cabbage and dumplings. We will go back but will try something different. Overall okay.

Rating: 4.5/5 Detroit is a melting pot with diverse cuisines, but other than occasional pierogis and kielbasa, I've only had polish food twice counting this one. I will be having it more often now. There are 3 polish restaurants right next to each other. Luckily, I have a polish friend I can call and she recommended this place. The inside is old fashioned, dim, and almost foreboding. But, the restaurant is more elaborate and well-lit. I was greeted by a spunky hostess, who upon my asking if this is the restaurant, she answered, "it looks like one". Wanting to sample everything, I ordered the polish platter with a side of pork chop and chose dill pickle soup for my soup. The waitress let me try their sausage soup along with my dill pickle soup. Both soups have an unique sourness to them, which gave a zing to the hearty soups. I enjoyed the dill pickle soup more, which is basically a potato soup with pickle brine and fresh dill. The unifying concept of polish dishes seem to be meaty, hearty, calorie-high food balanced out with acidity. Outcome is delicious and very filling food that doesn't overwhelm your palate with its heaviness. What I learned with my sampler is that polish do pork very well. And to balance the richness of the meal, a good sauerkraut is crucial as a palate cleanser. Sour and sweet flavor of the sauerkraut jolts your appetite while cleansing your palate, readying you for the next delicious bite. Pork chop was similar to tonkatsu, but the meat was a little bit thinner with different breading. The city chicken was really juicy and tender and quickly became my favorite. And despite the breading, it didn't taste that heavy, tho it did get soggy while I was busy eating other dishes and taking pics. When you learn about the polish history, you understand their cuisine and appreciate the food more. According to my friend, city chicken, the skewer dish, is made out of pork, not chicken. It's a uniquely American polish dish that came about during the depression because they couldn't afford chicken. So, instead, they took tender parts of pork and dressed it up and fried like fried chicken! This is the first time I've had kielbasa properly, with horseradish. It was such a good combination I'm going to buy some next time I buy any sausage. Stuffed cabbage looked heavy, but it tastes rather light and sweet due to rice, tomato sauce, herbs, and cabbage. Meatball with mushroom sauce was the only thing I wasn't that impressed with, as the meatball was on a dry side. Even the mashed potato was good, it was hand mashed with chunks w a mushroom gravy w actual mushrooms. Cheese and meat pirogies were filled to the brim with farmers cheese and meat. I've never had farmer's cheese before, it reminded me of a cross between cream cheese and ricotta. The sour cream was the perfect accompaniment and the dough was doughy and chewy in all the right ways. I'm a big fan of comfort food, and polish food fills your stomach and warms your heart with masterful balance of flavors. I'm gonna have to learn how to make them and improve balancing different flavors better.

Ordered take out here today. When my wife picked up the order an employee then chased her out to the car to let her know that she did not tip!!! Excuse me but, I was I always understood that a tip was for waitstaff and bussers upon dining in and being served. I tried to call to speak with a manager to ask if this is standard practice at Wawel. I then got the run around that there was no manager but I could talk to a waiter or call back and press the selection for banquet hall booking to speak to a manager, of course no one picked up. Unless I receive some sort of response to this complaint, this will be my first and last order here, and will take our business elsewhere. Icing on the cake is that they also forgot my city chicken in the "Polish Feast"

We decided to visit on "National Pierogi Day", so the restaurant was busy, but the service was still good. I felt bad for our waitress, she was new and clearly stressed out - so much so that I wanted to throw a xanax in her mouth. For real. Anyway, was bummed that they had already run out of dill pickle soup. I was really looking forward to trying it. Maybe next time. My son had their vegetable soup - I'm not a fan of vegetable soup, but I wished I'd have ordered it, because it was delicious! The pierogies were great, and the potato pancakes absolutely perfect. Everything was delicious and like home cooking from my grandma. Yes, the place lacks atmosphere, it is a banquet hall, but it makes up for that in the food. And the yummy Polish beer! We'll be back!

Husband brought me a carry out of pierogis (sweet cheese and sauerkraut). The sweet cheese pierogis were not sweet and extremely doughy. Love my Srodek's best of all. I am also not a fan of having sautéed onions on top of pierogis. Will be checking out the sauerkraut for lunch. Husband met friends for lunch and he said the food was good. He had city chicken dinner but mentioned the service was slow.

I reviewed last year for Paczki day. Very good bundles of sugar and plum! BUT...oh my goodness! The food here is the best Polish food ever! We picked up our paczki and stayed for dinner. How can you resist? Best ever! Even had a zywiecz

Went here with my family on a Sunday night for dinner. The restaurant was a banquet hall with card tables and chairs. Comfortable but nothing fancy. Otherwise I'd give this place 5 stars. Was seated by a nice hostess and had a great waitress as well. Ordered a nice Zywiec beer which was tasty. Started with a delicious bowl of beef barley soup. It was thick and tasty. As for my food I started with the potato pancakes which were awesome!!! Then moved on to the combo plate which had a kielbasa, meatballs, pierogis, and a stuffed cabbage with mashed potatoes and some sauerkraut. Everything on the plate was excellent. This restaurant is really great. Despite the bland decor, the food and service more than make up for it. If you like Polish food, the food in this place is right on par with the Polish Village Cafe in Hamtramck.

The staff is very friendly and attentive. The decorations inside the restaurant show polish heritage which I think is really cool. I ended up getting a combo dish and substituting stuffed cabbage for two pierogi since I'm not a fan of stuffed cabbage. Sausage was juicy and flavorful. Pierogis were the perfect size with great filling. City chicken had a nice flavor. It's the best polish food I've had around metro Detroit so I'll definitely return!

This is my favorite Polish restaurant; better than anything in Hamtramck, including cleanliness! The staff is always friendly, plenty of parking, good music and food has never disappointed. I brought several Polish friends here who agree that the food is excellent.

My wife and daughter and I tried to have dinner here tonight. We had made reservations we arrived and we were directed to a table. Our table had one chair and as we stood there the waitress walked away to go stand at the register and stare at her note pad. After about five minutes I walked to a different table and took my own chairs back to our table. We sat there for probably another five minutes until the waitress came over and brought us water with one of the cups having dried food still attached to it. The waitress came back and we ordered drinks then proceeded to wait 15 minutes while our waitress walked around staring at her notepad and helping a table that came in after us. After a total of 30 minutes in the restaurant we stood up and left having only received water with dirty glasses. Upon walking out our waitress, another waitress and the manager we're all completely oblivious. We had looked forward to dining here tonight but it became one of the saddest displays of service I have probably ever received. We will never be returning and unfortunately never being able to try their food. This is the first time we've ever left a restaurant without ever been served.

The best of the best of the best! Real, homemade Polish food (I know, first hand)... I love that it's so convenient and close. Very old world. If you speak Polish, do pipe up and greet your server in your native tongue. I simply adore this place, it brings me back, and the memories it conjures up are so very warming. This is a restaurant and banquet hall, and offers catering as well. They hold many events throughout the year. Paczki day! Get them here! Dances, festivals, events, funerals, showers, weddings. American Polish Cultural Center and Wawel Polish Restaurant is truly a place to consider for your event. The customer service cannot be matched!! Love love love this place!!

We were hungry and wanted something different for dinner, pluse are looking for a wedding venue too. My DaD made the very best Polish food ever, and I really miss it. So we thought why not. Wawel "used to be" a beautiful place, but now the landscape is overgrown and there are weeds everywhere. The building looks very neglected. Their wood front door is rotted and it's water damaged 18 " up from the bottom. At that point we should have turned around and left, but hunger and curiosity got the best of us, so in we went. Geez this place looks like a mid evil dungeon, old, dark, gloomy and dingy. If you have a mid-evil themed event this place is for you. The banquet halls were visible from where we sat, there was stuff piled up in the corners of the hall and poorly hidden behind room dividers. Everything inside this place is dark and dingy. That was just the beginning! This is the worst food I've ever been served anywhere.

As a member of the American Polish Cultural Society, I have eaten at Wawel and the APCC on many occasions, including lunches, large birthday parties, funeral luncheons, holiday buffets and banquets. My food and service has always been excellent, and I've long considered Wawel to be one of my two favorite Polish restaurants in the Detroit area. Unfortunately, my experience there yesterday was a very different and quite disappointing story. My wife made a 4:00 pm reservation for 13 people to celebrate my 80th birthday and called back a couple times to confirm the reservation. But when we arrived, there were no tables set up for us. We had to wait in the lobby area while they cleaned a couple tables and set them up for us. It was a few minutes after 4:30 pm before we were finally seated. Then we sat there for at least a half hour waiting to order beverages while a female server waited on other tables and a male server set up tables and seated a couple other customers. Finally, sometime after 5:00 pm, the male server came over and took our beverage orders, went behind the bar to pour our beverages, brought us our beverages and a few minutes later came back to take our meal orders. (Alas, they were out of stuffed cabbage.) A long while later, our meals started coming out in waves, as our server made the long walk back and forth to the kitchen on the far side of the banquet hall. The first wave consisted of bowls of tasty but lukewarm dill pickle soup. The next wave consisted of the meals ordered by about one third of our guests. It took our server about three trips to bring the rest of us our meals--by which time the first group was already finished eating. Not only were our meals served at a very slow pace--but they were all served lukewarm at best! A couple disappointed guests boxed up their meals for reheating at home. My own soup and city chicken dinner were tasty but definitely not as warm as they should have been. We had planned to have the restaurant staff serve us a sheet cake that we had purchased elsewhere, but realizing that we had already run past the restaurant's closing time, we decided to serve the cake at our home instead. Speaking of the restaurant's closing time, NOBODY INFORMED MY WIFE WHEN SHE MADE OUR RESERVATION THAT THE RESTAURANT CLOSES AT 5:00 PM ON SUNDAYS! HAD THEY TOLD HER THAT, WE WOULD OF COURSE HAVE REQUESTED AN EARLIER RESERVATION! A word about our server. He has waited on me before at lunch and provided excellent service. Yesterday, he was friendly, hard-working. and as accommodating as he could be under the circumstances. But he had to bus tables, set up tables, greet and seat customers, pour beverages, take orders, walk back and forth the long distance to the kitchen to get our food, and of course prepare our bill--all without any help from anyone. Most restaurants have busboys and bartenders to do some of this work, but not Wawel. Not yesterday anyway. I'm sorry our guests--some who traveled all the way from Minneapolis-- were not able to experience Wawel and Polish food at its best. I think our experience would have been much more satisfying if the restaurant were BETTER MANAGED,

My mom's friend wanted to treat her to dinner for her birthday, and this is where they chose. Since I was in town, I was invited along. They play bridge here and in return they agree to buy lunch. That's no problem for my mom and her friends. Another reviewer mentioned that the food taste like catered food, and not made to order. He was right, probably because that is what they do most :Funerals and weddings (based on the clientele - the former is the greater). Let me state that i was probably the youngest person in there by twenty years. Decor: It's a Polish version of the Elks Club. The good: Dill pickle soup. Yes, it is really tasty! Who woulda thunk it! Everything else? Well, the two senior ladies i was with enjoyed their liver and onions. My birthday mom had the [fried] whitefish special. it was nothing special. I would have ordered the fish and chips, but it's a Friday only thing. The had the cheese crepes which were really cheese blintzes. They were luke warm, and passable, but I will stick to French crepes. Not really worth $8.95. This isn't really a dining destination for foodies, but if you want to please your Polish, Slovak, Czech, etc.. grandparents, then this is the place for you to win brownie points, or maybe kielbasa points.

The service is what's truly great. They are hustling against all challenges. The food is middle of the road but I've never left hungry that's for sure. The cabbage rolls are good as is most the other plates. Overall a great spot and thank you!

Great atmosphere and food! I've been to Poland twice and I thought this food was authentic. The peiroges and cabbage rolls were fantastic. Their cheese cake was not as good as those I had in Poland. I will definitely be going back. My mother in law who is polish thought the food was over all very good.

I came here thinking the Polish food would be awesome. I was very disappointed, most of the food look like it was taken out of the freezer and reheated. The Pierogis were OK, that's ridiculous considering it's a Polish restaurant. I've had better Polish combination plates in regular restaurants. I won't be going back. It's very hard for me to give a negative review, but I feel that it's important to the owners to know what people really feel. Good luck in the future.

Today we marked off another place on our "restaurants we've wanted to try since we moved here" list--and we've tried to go probably three or four times before, but we always managed to show up on Saturday when they're closed! We planned ahead this time, and also had a restaurant.com coupon to boot! If you've read my other reviews, you know I am Polish so have had some experience with great home-cooked polish food...so I was very eager to taste everything. Consequently, I ordered the Wawel Polish Platter which gave me a little taste of quite a few things (city chicken, meatballs, stuffed cabbage, pierogi, kielbasa & kraut with mashed potatoes and gravy). Hubby got the Combination Plate (two pierogi, crepe, stuffed cabbage, kielbasa & kraut). Both dinners came with soup so we both had to try the Dill Soup! Dill Soup, you say? Really? Yes, and it was pretty good. Served hot, with potatoes and carrots in a kind of creamy dill base. Not my favorite soup ever, but something I would order again! (Even just to be able to say I've eaten Dill Soup!) Hubby was very impressed with his meal and loved everything. I, on the other hand, could appreciate that it was all PRETTY good, but not quite 5-star good. The city chicken was tasty and brought back memories, but it was a little dry. The pierogies (which came with sour cream) were a slight bit bland and would have been better with sauteed onions. The kielbasa and kraut was good, just not like my mom's. The stuffed cabbage was pretty dead-on to what I am used to (mmmm, tasty!). The mashed potatoes were real and came with a mushroom gravy. So overall, we had great service and everything was tasty, even if it wasn't exactly like my family's homemade versions--and I managed to still snarf everything down (minus a few bites I just couldn't finish--it was a LOT of food). We are now eager to take our polish mothers back there to see what they think! And you wouldn't have to twist our arms to go back...

The first visit to the Wawel Restaurant by myself and my wife was delightful. No surprise that the limited menu is oriented towards Polish Cuisine. The dill pickle soup is something not to be missed. The food was great, the service outstanding. This is truly a Detroit gem. But, alas they are not open on Saturday. .

Great polish food. If you aren't polish it's like having a polish grandma cook you meal. The potato pancakes are fantastic!

Beautiful Place. Loved the bar, the wood is gorgeous. However, the food was not edible. None of it. Party of 11 and not one item was edible. We allegedly had dill pickle soup for starters. It seemed like COLD Potato soup with a little brine poured in. This was the highlight of dinner. Pirogi: nasty. Undercooked and you couldn't tell what was what. Potato Pancakes-somebody ate 1/2 so it had to be 2nd best item. 3 Polish plates came out and 2 &1/2 went back in. A couple of Orders of Perch (which was THE worst entree ordered). I think it was still frozen. Warmest thing on my plate was the tartar sauce and sour cream. I could go down the list but it was all terrible. We would have sent it back had we seen any member of the waitstaff. Waitress took our order, brought it out 45 minutes later never to be seen from again. Is the kitchen 2 miles away? Every last thing was ice cold. The service was as bad as the food. Would have had a couple of beers...if waitress ever came back to table. 1 drink order with the food. Never saw her again. The place was empty at 7:00 on a Friday night. Now I know why. It was Criminal they charged us. $200 wasted. On the way home I joked that we should stop at McDonalds, the next day I found out 2 couples did. I feel victimized all over again while I type this and being forced to give 1 star. If anybody has their first experience with Polish food here, I'd suspect they'd never eat it again. Ever. I'm 1/2 Polish and I may not. In summation: awful food, worse service. Go at your own risk. I am highly, highly questionable about their Yelp rating. They must make employees type reviews.

So disappointed. Our waitress was horrible. Not attentive at all. Gave me the wrong food but did not come to check on us for 9 minutes so I ate part of it. Dill pickle soup was very good. Pierogi had no flavor. Potato pancakes was ok. Don't think I'll be back anytime soon. Also never got the water that was asked for. Never offered a refill for drinks

I just love the food here. Accidentally order the Comb Plate but it was still very good. The Wawel Polish Platter is usually my main pick which is just as awesome. No pictures this time 'cause we just enjoyed the meal.

ok good news bad news scenario - good news - it is close to anyone in Oakland County, they make great pierogi, most of the other dishes are also decent to good and lastly they offer tripe soup on Fridays. Bad news - it is a catering hall so it is closed on saturdays and the food is produced en masse so don't expect to have your mind blown, as with most catering halls they make their food in large batches and relatively "safe" as in nothing too creative or spicy etc. My recommendation - pierogi, pork chops and a polish beer like Zywiec or Okocim, if you are there on Friday and feel adventurous try the Tripe soup. Also they really need to step up their marketing efforts, most people in Detroit don't know about this place.

I've been here a couple of times. The food really wasn't all that good and it was served cold once and luke warm the other time rather than piping hot-a definite faux-pas in my book (this seems to be a continual issue if you read other reviews for this place. There is NEVER an excuse for a restaurant serving food cold unless their stove stops working-then they should offer all guests a rain check and escort them to the door). I used to eat genuine Polish cuisine down in Hamtramck, so my bar is set pretty high. This place just didn't measure up. I like a good Polish meal, but this place just doesn't cut it. Explore other options before you eat here.

Wawel is a nice place and has the old Polish feel to it. It almost feels like you're eating in Europe. Sometimes there is a guy who plays piano and takes tips. It's a nice touch. The place is a huge. It is a high ceiling and tons of tables. It never seems that busy. The good.....the food. It's authentic polish. It's always good! The soups are awesome. Everything is homemade. No frozen garbage here. The bad. Many times it takes too long to get waited on. Considering they aren't that busy, you'd think you'd get immediate service. Often times you get your water and a menu, then wait 10-15 minutes for more service. The waiters and waitresses are always kind and helpful. I think they just need to hire more of them or change the way they do things. All in all, if I want a good Polish meal in the suburbs I go to Wawel. It's definitely tasty and never disappointing.

3 stars for food, 1.5, maybe 2 for service. Dill pickle soup was surprisingly tasty, it being my first experience with such a thing. I ordered the combination plate which consisted of kielbasa and kraut, a potato pancake, 2 pierogies and a crepe. The kielbasa was pretty flavorful, the potato pancake, while not close to as delicious as my grandma has made, wasn't awful. The pierogies were a bit of a disappointment, one was sauerkraut and one was potato, and they just really lacked in flavor. The crepe was nowhere as thin as a typical crepe and a little dry. Originally instead of the potato pancake I was supposed to get stuffed cabbage but I asked if I could substitute, and the waitress forgot, so underneath my potato pancake was the sauce from the stuffed cabbage that had just been taken off the plate. Service was not completely horrid but could definitely use some improvement. I stood waiting for over 5 minutes just waiting for someone to come seat me, and it was almost 10 minutes before the waitress came over to bring us water. Not once did she check to see how we liked our meal, and actually said "oh, good!" when we asked for another moment to peruse the menu. A bit of a disappointment considering my love for all things Polish.

They don't have smalec, and the server looked at me like I was retarded when I asked for this TRADITIONAL Polish spread. She didn't take a drink order, either, and my wife had to flag her down. We've been here several times, and the service is usually a bit lacking. That being said, we live in Clawson, and this is our go-to Polish joint when we can't make the trek to Hamtramck. Wawel still gets the job done.

Disappointing food, really awful service. And the server was totally unfamiliar with the menu. Will not return.

Looking for Polish food? Look no further. This is Polish food like my Polish grandma should have made me. (She never made Polish food.) I always order the combination plate and everything on it tastes wonderful. Pierogies, a crepe, kraut, kielbasa, potato pancake...great comfort food. The mushroom soup is good too. It's in the Polish Cultural Center, so it's not open every day. I always go on Friday nights and haven't had to wait longer than a few minutes for a table. Service is friendly, but slow. I go there expecting to wait for my food for a while. I look at it more as the cultural center sharing the culture of it's food with the general public, rather than a business tyring to make money. Going in with that expectation, the food makes it totally worth it to me.

Best polish food in the Detroit area. Much better quality and legitimate polish recipes then the glitzy Polka across the street.

Come here about once a year for lunch. Great food & atmosphere, the remodel made the bar look inviting versus a basement bar. Subtract one star for service. On a slow day & time, waited several minutes at door, then 10 minutes before waitress showed up and 20 minutes for the food. 4th visit and consistently slow and not very friendly. I'll still be back next year.

This is truly a depressing review to write, because the food was good ..... but management fails. I've personally been involved with the food/restaurant management/marketing business, therefore I can speak from experience. When a restaurant resorts to doing marketing via Restaurant-com, it is obvious that they need an influx of new customers. So, when new customers show up, it is absolutely critical to keep them coming back often. Dishonesty and bad customer service can definitely bring any business down. 1) There are signs everywhere on the walls, promoting FREE Ice-cream on Tue, Wed, Thu. 2) Kids menu on ALL tables show French Fries for $1.50 and Drinks for $1.00. When the bill came, Kids Drink was $1.95, Fries was $1.75, and 2 Ice-cream for $5.00. The lady at the cash register (possibly the owner/manager) refused to adjust prices, despite the FACT that evidences on the tables. She also insisted on either removing the Ice-cream charges OR accepting the Restaurant-com gift cert, NOT BOTH. That is unethical business practice, because SIGNS on the walls are sufficient evidences regarding the ice-cream. And gift certs are conventionally treated as cash. Enough said. For $7-$8, Wawel has lost a repeat customer here.

When I get a text asking if I want sushi or Polish food, my reaction was literally "meh"...who cares? There isn't amazing sushi in SE Michigan, please correct me if I'm wrong but I haven't found it, and I really didn't want to drive down to Hamtramack for quality polish eats. Well, bust my buttons, the dinner date chose Wawel in Troy and my ever-expanding waistline is glad he did. First off...the location. How damn precious is this place? It's a cross between a Knights Of Columbus hall and a Greek Orthodox Church. Cheesy-chic. On one side, you have the bar area, though I doubt you would find the 20-somethings proping up the bar and checking out the honeys. It's brightly lit and seriously gives me the Clark W. Griswold in Germany feel. The main ballroom features plenty of tables as well and on the night we dined (a Friday), an older gentleman played piano on the main dancefloor. Atleast I think it was a dancefloor. I told my date that if another couple got up, we had to as well. Luckliy for him, nobody danced but the music was a nice touch. Onto the meal...I can't even tell you the name of my dish but there was alot of it. It was carb nirvana...potato pancakes, kraut pierogies, stuff cabbage, more kraut, more starch, more yummy goodness. The pierogies are amazing! Plump and full of tart, delicious kraut. The potato pancakes where interesting. Literally flat as a pancake, doughy and SO good. LIke a crepe, dip in sour cream and chew until your jaw is sore. The stuffed cabbage? Honestly, my Mom's blows theirs out of the water...but it was a nice mix of sweet and savory. By no means offensive, just nothing can compare with Mom's...and I'm not the first to have said that. The dill pickle soup was fantastic!!! It's such a unique flavor...the dill being very subtle. There is something endlessly summer about it. I am now on the hunt for a great recipe for it because I know my dinner date and I will be craving it in the comforts of our own home. They have what appears to be a full bar and a beer selection with all the usual suspects (Bud, Bud Lite, etc.) and a few Polish imports. I did try one, a lite brew, but I can't remember the name and wouldn't even try to spell it. Thanks to my waitress for suggesting it because it went down too smooth. All and all...it's not the kind of place you want to take a date. The crowd is a little older...okay, it's alot of senior citizens at 6:30 on a Friday but it's very comfortable and unpretentious. The food is really fantastic and the prices are reasonable (about $11-$13 for dinner, with soup and bread). They also have carryout....and who wouldn't love to bring some homemade pierogies home and claim they slaved to make them from their own recipe? It's definately worth the stop if you are looking for true, ethnic comfort food.

Went here because we heard such good things byt left completely disappointed. I had potato pierogi and my husband had kraut pierogi. We were both disappointed. Both our dishes arrived cold. They were supposed to be fried with onions but both of ours were barely fried and had no onions. The potato had a very weird consistency inside. I am not polish and my homemade pierogi are better.

Have been here a few times recently and will concentrate on what they do well. To me this is the best Polish food outside of Hamtramck. Best thing on the menu is the City Chicken with the mushroom perogi and the potato pancakes a close 2nd and 3rd. Chicken noodle soup is very good and their kraut is not bad at all or the fresh sausage. The pork chops are decent, want to try the schnitzel but haven't yet because I just love the city chicken. Went on a Sunday, mostly older crowd, but they even had music and dancing

Stick with the dill soup, potato pierogis, potato pancakes and sauerkraut and keibalsa! Very good. Everything else I would pass on.

A little bit more pricey then the polish places in hamtramck, but still authentic, tasty, and in a great location. This place is housed inside the polish cultural center with a small area filled with tables, their are always polish families dining here, and the service is very prompt. Their dill pickle soup is to die for. I will keep going to this place for peirogi's, soup and mashed potatoes, all their other dishes are amazing as well. I usually get the vegetarian plate, and whomever I go with order's the combination plate, it's a plate with a little bit of every traditional polish dish. Everyone try this place!

Great food. Love the Dill Pickle Soup. Generous portions for the dinner. Interesting assortment of Polish beer/ale. And the decor is almost pure old world. Service can be a little slow sometimes though but is generally good.
