Great Road Trip Worthy Breweries to Visit in Southwest Michigan from Chicago | Eater Chicago

"This small rustic-feeling brewpub on the outskirts of Kalamazoo is actually the highest-rated brewery in the state according to beer-rating app Untappd. They’re clearly earning high accolades for the huge variety of beers, mostly focused on the adjunct stouts, hazy IPAs and sours that make beer nerds crazy. Even though they rotate through beers quickly, reliable favorites include the dozens of varieties of Condor Valley fruited sours and their flagship IPA, Pulled Into Nazareth, which has also been amped up into Double and Triple IPA versions." - Karl Klockars

Google
Wax Wings has had some really nice beers and a welcoming atmosphere during each of my visits so far. The staff was friendly, and both beers I tried tasted great. Kalamazoo’s Finest is a really tasty, malty session beer with a good balance of flavors. In my opinion, this remains one of Kalamazoo’s best breweries over the years.

Nice little brewery on the end of a strip mall. No patio and children allowed, two things that lower the rating for me. They have a food truck most days. Beer is good but definitely not the best in Michigan. Worth a visit.

One of my two favorite breweries in Kalamazoo, and one of my favorites in all of Michigan! So far, I have made one visit. I drove about two hours on a random Saturday, just to go there. It was well worth the trip, and the first thing I thought to myself was how do I move this place closer to my house? Every beer I tried was not only fantastic, but true to style, from New England IPAs to American Wild ales to Sours. Excellent presentation too. I rarely hand out five stars, but this one was relatively easy for me. I am definitely coming back as soon as possible. I would love to meet the brewer.

Google
It's a nice little strip-mall brewery. It was clean and everyone was friendly enough. They had a food truck out in the parking lot and a few items of their own on and in-house menu. Nothing unusual.

Google
Small, quait little bar. Good beer selections and recommendations. The atmosphere once cozy but open. The addition of the dart boards was nice.No food is served here but it's a nice place to catch a drink with friends and play some games or watch the game. Definitely not bad for a bar and decent drink options.

Google
Good Ipa's and barrel aged beers. A lot of options to go, I can't wait to crack open some of these bottles

Google
Micro Award winning brewery. Fresh approach to brews, something for every taste and every drop you don't want to waste. Locally owned and a refreshing style of beers. Including Kalamazoo's Finest lager to heavy barrel aged. Always something different on the board every time. Thank you Rob & T.J.

Yelp
Visited Wax Wings last Friday. Great beer, wonderful service. They have no food, so it's a good spot to just grab a few pints and enjoy their beer and their knowledge. They have cans to go home as well.

Yelp
Great beers!! Service with a smile!! Will definitely return! Not far from downtown Kalamazoo.

Yelp
Got lucky and sat next to a local and struck up a conversation. Wax Wings is on its way from COVID recovery. They were drive up/pick up only fir a long time and only recently been open to indoor seating. Was surprised all of their beers were different (not the same beer with a twist) but unique flavors which each sample. Seating is limited and everyone is distanced. Worth a stop if your nearby.

Yelp
Definitely an up and coming place with potential. I liked that they offered a variety of beer types and even though they don't offer flights, they do have half pours that are perfect for sharing! The sweeter drinks weren't overly done, for me, it was perfect because you were able to taste each flavor as it was rather than be shocked over overwhelmed with sugar. The brewery does have board games and cards if you want a place to chill! The set up is open concept so just be cautious that it could get a little loud. Food was alright. They had a little station set up outside under a canopy where they cooked. The burger was delicious and well flavored. Only opportunity would be more meat per bun ratio..which they do offer a double patty and I only ordered the one. Overall, pretty chill place and would like to go back when they have another rotation of beers!

Yelp
Can't wait to get back and try some more beers here ... The ones we got to sample on our sorry visit recently were fantastic! A little worried that the location and lack of a kitchen will be a barrier to their success and hoping the word gets out about how yummy there beers are. You can also pick up food from nearby restaurants and bring it in with you (I'd recommend Bangkok Flavor, but do keep in mind that they tend to run longer on their to-go-order wait times then they estimate. If you're in-ta Insta, it's a must-do to get your photo taken with the wings painted on the wall. Unless you're tall, you'll need to pull up a chair to stand on so they line up right.

Yelp
8/16/19 Honestly, I am not going to lie, I have never heard of this place until we typed Breweries in Yelp and found this place and it was not that far from us. We decided to check it out. We tried 4 beers (half of the beer pours) and got food. We both got burger baskets. The four beers we tried were interesting but overall, they were good. The food had a select menu. Online I am pretty sure most of the reviews said they offered food, or they didn't. I am not sure, but they had food and were making it outside under a tent. Maybe they don't have a kitchen yet and working on it. Either way, it was good. Atmosphere: It was nice on the inside. I loved how spacious it was and lots of different types of seating. High types, bench, and big tables for large parties and booths. There are board games and card games for people to play. We played a couple of games. You would get a number when you ordered, and they would deliver the food to you. You pay at the counter, which is good and bad. Good because you don't have to wait until the end and can pay as you order but bad because you are paying and tipping before the service, which is putting 100% trust in the business that you will get the best service and food ahead of time. As a person who worked in the food and beverage industry for a decade, I am fine with that, but I could see other people thinking that it was weird. Cost: About $2 to $4 per half of the beer pour. It's half the price for a half pour. So not terribly price. Overall: I give this place 4 stars. I will be back to try more beers and food.

Yelp
Update: there's a limited menu of DELICIOUS food available now! Wow. What a surprise: Burnt Ends better than I've ever had at Arcadia, which prides itself on BBQ - spicy chicken sandwich and fries that rival NONLA - and potstickers that, if not quite Pacific Rim level, where nonetheless delicious and came with a really good sauce. The only thing we didn't try yet were the burgers, and I'm sure they're gonna be great. Also, since this is primarily a brewery, after all: new additions to the draft list are fantastic! Finally discovered a stout, Happiness is a Warm Tun, and it's one of my favorites of an all-star lineup here. Also currently on tap are two inventive, distinct, and super good sours, a key lime variety and a peach cobbler. To top it off, they also have a new DIPA, Double Nnazareth, which is primo. This is the new game in town worth being excited about.

Yelp
Wax Wings was a pleasant surprise, during our Michigan craft brewery road trip. We had visited larger, more well-known breweries, but both agreed that the most memorable beers sampled were at Wax Wings. I loved my 1st ever "milkshake" sour, brewed with lactose and boysenberries. The lactose tempered the typical tartness of the berry and sours. The regular Condor Valley sour with raspberry and strawberry was also great and the flavors well-balanced. My partner had the Casper Street pale ale, and enjoyed the juicy/hazy take on the style. I even liked their more hoppy styles; they weren't too bitter or off-putting. We dropped in right after a rush on a Saturday afternoon, and were the only patrons besides a regular. Our bartender was friendly, but not invasive. Wax Wings doesn't offer flights, but you can order very reasonably priced half pours. The brewery is in a small strip mall, but is well-decorated and inviting (looks to be family friendly). We think Wax Wings refers to the Icarus myth, seeing references to flight and Apollo here and there...if so, cool! I definitely recommend roaming from the typical craft brewery route and checking out Wax Wings...especially if you like unique takes on sour and juicy/hazy styles.

Yelp
Place opened very recently, so the beer menu is limited. But what there is, is good. Selection changes fairly frequently so keep checking in! Atmosphere is very relaxed and I would call it a good place to start an evening, or if you are not a night owl... a great place to close out an evening! (Closes at 9 except on Fridays and Saturdays when they close at 10.)

Yelp
Solid staples + delish rotating brews. Our fave spot in Kalamazoo. Half Pours = half price. Always feel like family & doggos welcome!

Yelp
Great addition to the Gull Rd area! We've been coming here since they first opened and have enjoyed experiencing their tasty brews as they've continued to develop new items on their menu. Pleasantly surprised by their limited food menu which is fairly new. Tonight we came in for the $0.50 wing special and split some BBQ and Buffalo boneless wings which were delicious! We haven't been able to try yet but the burgers look great and we'll definitely be back for those very soon. It's great to be able to experience a local brewery that isn't stuffed downtown. Definitely worth the extra few minute drive outside of downtown!

Yelp
We were fortunate to get a early taste, meet the guys (and Mom) before the official opening. After a couple soft starts they got this place going, and we finally have a great little brewery on the east side of Kzoo. We love the beer, nice selection of blondes, IPA's, and the also a nice porter. This is beer only, so bring your own food or have it delivered.

Yelp
Wow! What a gem! This little inconspicuous strip mall brewery was a great surprise. Every beer they make is awesome. There's not much for food here though, so be prepared for that. They offer half pours (very generous) and full pours. I love their Condor Valley and White Rabbit.

Yelp
Fabulous beer. Only four on tap but they were all delicious. So good, all the cans were spoken for and I couldn't get any to go:(

Yelp
My wife and I stopped in for our first visit at night. It is nice inside with a barn theme. Thee are games to play. We were both impressed with the beer. They had a chocolate porter and a coffee stout that we tried. The bartender was friendly. It wasn't too noisy.

Yelp
This brewery has been open for just a short time but they are top notch. The quality of the beers and the atmosphere we're amazing. If you are a fan of the NE IPA style, you will love their pale ales. They are at the same level or higher than the Old Nation M-43. The bartender was very friendly and knowledgeable. Even with Bells being in the same city, this is easily one of the top breweries in the Kalamazoo area. I will go back every time I visit.

Yelp

Yelp
The beer here is awesome and the burgers are amazing. Probably the best burger in Kalamazoo. Atmosphere is awesome too, great place to just chill and have a brew.

Yelp
Love this place - great beer, nice staff, and cool ambiance. It's my new go-to brewery in Kalamazoo.

Yelp
They don't serve food but that means bring on the pups! My wife was scared at first that they only had pale ales, but she ordered a Casper and was pleasantly surprised. I had a Nazareth and enjoyed it as well. They serve unfiltered beer there which is how it's meant to be. haven't tried unfiltered? This is a great place to start. If you are hungry, they have a partnership with a Mexican place a couple doors down which will make sure you don't go hungry. Other people have just brought their own food. I found the staff a bit quiet, but super friendly and ready to please.

Yelp
A glass is a glass is a glass. Why all the fuss over a glass?! Beer taste better in a glass. We have been to Wax Wings a few times. Have enjoyed their brew. Food is okay. Nothing to write home about. Enough to fill your belly, and accompany the good brew. Today, we went in after Market to get a brew and food. Didn't know "Oktoberfest" was abounding. Was served our $5.50 brew of Dbl Nazereth IPA in a plastic cup at the bar. "A plastic cup", I asked. Aghast. "Yes." The Barkeep informed me. Today is our Oktoberfest celebration. We don't want glasses to be broken and such in the festivities. . " I looked about at the mostly empty tavern. "Hmm. Well. Since, we have not really started yet, I would prefer mine in a glass." Apparently, this was not allowed in such a celebration! After my husband begged, and I refused to order food, the barkeep reluctantly allowed me to enjoy my pretty delicious IPA from a GLASS as it should be. The service made made me question if I wanted to return to Wax Wings Brewing Co. A glass IS a glass, but a service IS also service. The glass was given so reluctantly, it made me sad to enjoy the other delicious wonderments Wax Wings have to offer. The brew is honestly SO good! It remains to be seen if we return. For me, it is all about how one is treated. That is why I support local establishments. But, it has to be a two way street. - or I am going to turn the opposite way.
