5 Under-the-Radar New Restaurants to Check Out in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Under new ownership and renamed from Wong Java House, this Alhambra halal restaurant puts out Indonesian stalwarts like satay skewers and beef rendang alongside rarer dishes such as ikan penyet (a whole fried fish slathered in shrimp and chile sauce); it is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays." - Cathy Chaplin

Portland’s New Indonesian Restaurant Wajan Opens on East Burnside Today | Eater Portland

"While working evenings at Shigezo, I ran an Indonesian food cart called Wayang House during the day, where I made peanut-sauce salads like gado gado and served warm ginger drinks; the cart was a formative experience but I wanted to do things bigger, which led me to open Wajan." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Google
Got recommended this place by my coworker and have to say this has become one of my top 10 restaurants in the city now. I make it an effort to tell other people about this restaurant or take them here because it’s just that good. The food is excellent. I’ve had Mie Goreng, Nasi Bungkus, Salted fish bean sprouts salad, and Nasi Kuning Komplit. Mie Goreng is my favorite/ go-to dish. Such deep flavors! I also love the Empal Gepuk beef, which you can get separately or with the rice plates. Service is good and quick. Very chill casual ambience. They also offered free soup by the counter when I went, which was tasty & refreshing. Honestly I have a lot of appreciation for this spot and hope nothing but the best for them!

Google
We had such a satisfying meal at Wayang Restaurant Halal. Everything was flavorful, generously portioned, and clearly made with care. The nasi kuning komplit was beautifully presented, with fragrant turmeric rice and a mix of sides that balanced each other well, especially the egg and perkedel, which stood out. The sambal mercon absolutely lives up to its name: pedas, rich, and addicting. It woke up the palate without overpowering anything and paired perfectly with the rice. The satay kambing was tender and juicy, with a nice bit of char and a savory-sweet peanut sauce that brought everything together. The ayam nasi goreng felt like comfort food at its best, well-seasoned chicken and fried rice that had that nostalgic, homestyle flavor. We’ll definitely be back to try more, this spot brings the warmth and depth of Indonesian food in every bite!

Google
Wait time was a bit long but worth it. Their nasi goreng could use a bit more flavor but the Es Alpukat was quite good.

We've been by this place a few times and didn't realize there's an Indonesian restaurant right next door. The sign isn't that big outside, or it's not visible enough for people to see when driving. We tried a few different Indonesian dishes. Some were really good, and some weren't. Lamb satay is really good. It's super juicy and tender with sweet soy sauce and chili. The second best dish was mee goreng - it's like a fried egg noodles with vegetables and you can choose from chicken, beef, or shrimp. The third one is stinky bean with shrimp. It's really tasty with spicy sauce. The place is super clean, and the food is cooked right when you order it. We ordered Nasi kuning with some chicken and rendang, but the chicken wasn't that great. It just had a bit of crunchiness on top. Right now, they're giving out free lemonade and 15% off, and on weekends, they're giving out free sweet and sour soup. Overall, the place and the waitress are pretty good, but they do charge a fee for using a credit card. So, make sure you bring some cash with you to avoid that fee. I'd really appreciate it if they could let us know ahead of time if there is a card fee when using it. We'll definitely be back for different dishes next time.

Google
4 stars since the parking was street parking in a busy road and only for an hour… otherwise, service was good and authentic Indonesian food. The kangkong was so spicy, i suggest asking for milder version if unable to tolerate. It’s authentic taste and full of flavor. The salted fried rice was tasty. The es cendol lacked jackfruit though. They offered 15% discount for that promo month. If only the place is near to me, I would definitely come often but it’s in LA unfortunately. Bonus- only Halal Indonesian food I have found so far in SoCal

Google
Driving all the way from north to the south using i5, and decided to take a break somewhere at Alhambra and found Indonesian cuisine. Got a try lamb satay and fried singkong, it’s so good, Wanna try all the menu, but I am too much full. The only thing my concern is to find where to park, is only road side parking available and it’s limited to 1-2 hours. I’m not from Alhambra, so I don’t know around. If anyone know around let us know where to park near by.

Yelp
When strangers on the internet tell you to try Wayang, it's very important that you don't ignore that. Absolute flavorful! I bookmarked this restaurant to bring my friends next time. Just go and try it for yourself. Enjoy! Service was excellent. Ambiance is cozy and homie. 10/10 no notes.

Yelp
This was honestly one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. I called to place an order and the woman who answered was completely rude and arrogant. I accidentally said the wrong item at first, and instead of helping me fix it, she snapped that she was busy, told me to check the menu myself, and then hung up the phone on me. I tried ordering online instead, but the website said to call to confirm payment. I called back, and the same person answered again with an angry tone. I still tried to stay polite and asked if she could check whether my order went through. She said she'd "answer later" like she was about to hang up again. When I asked how I was supposed to know if my order went through, she actually said she didnt care shes just busy, completely ignoring my request. She called me back later and said my order didn't go through even though the website said it did. When I told her I was disappointed, she just said, "Yeah, I'm busy today," with zero apology or care. This is absolutely unacceptable. If you can't treat customers with basic respect, you shouldn't be answering the phone. I will never order from here again. Update: 1 day later I originally left a review because of how rude and dismissive the person on the phone was when I tried to place and confirm my order. But now I am even more shocked because after this review, the same person texted me personally and brought up religion, telling me that "Lord Jesus should forgive me for my selfishness." This is completely unprofessional, offensive, and unacceptable for a business. A customer has the right to share an honest experience. If someone cannot handle basic customer service or respect boundaries, they should not be running a business or communicating with customers at all. If she is too busy to take orders or treat people kindly, then she should close temporarily instead of taking it out on customers. Do not blame customers for your bad attitude. I left feedback to help improve service, not to be insulted and lectured. This behavior crosses every line of professionalism.

Yelp
Wow, passed by all the time and didn't realize there was an Indonesian restaurant here. Great authentic Indonesian food! Feels like it was made by loving aunties, and they definitely didn't hold back on the spice too. We had the Tempeh mendoan, kwetiau goreng, nasi kuning, and kangkung balacan. So good Pleasant surprise, will definitely come again soon.

Yelp
Every dish we ordered was absolutely delicious; truly impressive. This little spot feels like a family-owned place, and you can really taste the authenticity of the Indonesian flavors. The service was also excellent: warm, attentive, and genuinely friendly. Super highly recommended!

Yelp
Home style cooking, fried chicken at its best. Real Indonesian food. I had lamb satay on a stick, meatball noodles soup. The service is really good ; the chef Lilly is adorable as we found out she can actually cook anything. Her charm is contagious , adds points in this culinary experience . Well done!

Yelp
This is the best Indonesian food I have had in SoCal. As someone who cooks a lot & who prefers making things from scratch, I could immediately tell this place stood out from a lot of other restaurants. The chef makes EVERYTHING from scratch. She makes everything fresh, including using fresh whole spices. It's a one-woman operation. The food is fresh, but good food takes time, so please be patient & come when you have some time to spare. I promise it's worth the wait.

Yelp
I passed by this place many many times. Finally had the chance to give it a try. I was a bit disaappointed with the quality of their Nasi Bungkus. It was packed with a lot of rice however. Chicken was dry and the Beef was so hard to cut. It was quite pricey too for the quality. I'm sorry I probably won't go back.

Yelp
I'm from the Bay Area where Indonesian food is rare. We've had Medan Kitchen before so we decided to give this place a try. On this trip, we ordered takeout but sat down for dessert. We came on a Saturday evening and there was no wait with just a couple tables with adventurous "bule" (caucasians) getting ready for their delicious meals. The es cendol is unique here in that they don't use the traditional green jelly but what looks like a homemade blue colored jelly. The palm sugar mixed with the shaved ice is very refreshing. I think it's more upscale than Medan kitchen but not by much. Medan Kitchen is a very casual place with more food options. For the food, we ordered nasi bungkus (combination rice goodness), nasi bebek (fried duck and rice), and mie tek tek (traditional fried noodles). My favorite is the nasi bungkus because it has a little bit of everything. They give a side of gudek (jackfruit curry) with the rice, fried chicken, beef empal (fried sliced beef) and spicy sambal. Although menu here is limited, I think they focus on a few good dishes. The duck seems deep fried. It comes with green sambal that compliments it well. My daughter liked it but I'd probably pass on the duck next time as it's a bit gamey for me.

Yelp
Parking: Got street parking for an hour in front of the restaurant wasn't difficult at all. They're understaffed, but didn't feel like we waited too long for our food. Although, there's 3 parties in the restaurant currently! Ambiance is mom and pop. Has simple Indonesian decor. They offer cassava chips and sprite, Dr. pepper, Diet Coke. Food was so good! We got the chicken satay- it comes in a deliciously rich, slightly sweet, nutty sauce and some rice cakes cubes that I've never had before. Kwetiau goreng udang - tastes like it was properly cooked in a wok. Reminds me of a Thai dish called pad see ew, with the wide flat noodles. But the flavors is different. Love the fried shallots on top. Nasi kuning Komplit This combines the fried chicken, the beef rendang. Comes with this mash potato mixture, cold cucumbers, fried egg with the hot sauce, a fried tofu. The beef rendang was so tender! Curious why this place isn't more popping!

Yelp
Authentic delicious Indonesian food, what else is there to say! This restaurant is pretty short staff, I think there was just the waitress and one chef in the back. Expect some wait times because of the lack of staff and they make all the food fresh. Besides that, the food is bomb, I tried out these items. Nasi Bungkus - Tons of rice but everything was so good. Perfectly season and the meats were all very tender. Just a solid dish. (5/5) Nasi Kuning Komplit - The yellow rice was so good. Really good dish with many different items that are all good. You can't go wrong with this dish. (5/5) Service here is easily probably a 3/5 since they are short staffed but food is a 5/5. Support your local restaurants and this place is worth trying if you're open to a longer wait. It wasn't too crowded when I came on Saturday which was great. They do accept credit cards now but they have a 3% added fee. Bring cash/zelle to avoid the extra fees. Parking - There is one hour parking in front ( maybe only 4 - 5 spots) and two hour parking on the sides. Therefore parking is kind of limited.

Yelp
Wayang is a true hidden gem in Alhambra! I have always wanted to try this place when it was previously Wong Java and finally got a chance this past Wednesday. No other customers were there when we arrived, so we had the whole place to ourselves. There was just one lady working the front (and I think she also cooked our food as well), and she was very nice and took our orders. We ordered nasi kuning komplit, lab satay, and mie goreng. For the month of September, they were doing free lemonade and 15% off, as well as free soup on weekends--check on their Instagram or website for the current deal of the month. The inside of the restaurant is very cute and homey--they have lots of photos on some of the walls and a TV playing Indonesian karaoke. Our food arrived 15 minutes after we ordered because they had to cook it, and everything was super delicious and came out nice and hot. The mie goreng had delicious wok hei/smoky aroma because the noodles were charred perfectly. The lamb satay had a delicious sweet and tangy sauce and was served with lontong (pieces of compressed rice cakes) to dip in the sauce. The nasi kuning komplit had delicious tumeric rice, beef rendang, spicy sambal on a fried egg, fried chicken (which was a little dry), a potato ball, fried tofu, and cucumbers. My husband and sister-in-law were in love with the lamb satay and mie goreng (they said they could each eat a whole plate by themselves), so we will definitely be back for more (and to try their other food)!

Yelp
Our school is close by so we usually come by here for lunch when we get the chance. This is a pretty small restaurant with good flavors especially if you love spicy and savory. Parking: street parking, I haven't encountered a lack of parking space whenever I came by. Staff is polite and friendly. There may be times your food might take longer than expected and they do mention it by the wall at the counter. Food: I've tried their beef rendang before and that was one of my favorites, and the soup they usually serve as complimentary when you dine in. Today's visit, they didn't have both and I was a bit sad. I did get other dishes and all of them were also really good and tasty. We had the Mie Goreng Udang, Nasi Goreng Beef and Nasi Bangkus. Mie Goreng with shrimp: good dish to share. Even if you have a rice dish I think this is a great addition. Light and smokey flavor with hint of soy sauce and spices. Nasi Goreng beef: this fried rice is really good. One of our go to, this has good amount of beef slices and the flavor is just right! This goes really well with beef rendang and sambal, also add a splash of their sweet soy sauce and it's BOMB. Nasi Bangkus: first time having this dish. There are sweet, savory and very spicy flavors in this. Their greenish/dark brown sambal is VERY SPICY, for me. The red one is the one I can tolerate. The dish had chicken, beef, tofu, egg and jackfruit. A plateful of protein and carbs! I really think this is a good meal to have if you want to try lots of different dishes for the price of one. Sadly I didn't have the spicy/sour soup they would offer back then, it would help elevate the dishes. Good spot to try Indonesian food if you're interested!

Yelp
Been coming where before they changed the name and I feel like they are stepping up the game with the new branding and marketing! They reduced the menu items for sure, but my favorites are still in the menu like Tempe Mendoan and Ayam Kremes. They offer free (sour) soup, Sayur Asem, every weekend and also home ad Lemonade. Their es teler is legit good but I wouldn't order their Cendol anymore, it needs some improvement in taste and texture. Parking is available in the back as usual or on the side.

Yelp
This is a little hole in the wall in the outskirts of Alhambra. Food is very authentic. I got the Nasi complete which in Malaysia I would call a Nasi lemak. Very tasty. The sambal was spicy. The Kuey teau goreng was pretty good too. Service was friendly. There's ample street parking.

Yelp
Parking is limited, how ever you can park near the street way. The restaurant is small but clean. The food is excellent !!! I like the perkedel and nasi kuning. Service is good

Yelp
Great Indonesian food. The owner/chef puts her heart into each dish and makes everything from scratch. Everything is made fresh and cooked to order. Please stop on by and support this small business. Parking is in the rear.

Yelp
First time coming here and the food was amazing (made fresh to order) ! Service was great and the ambiance was very welcoming. Can't wait to come back to this spot

Yelp
This is a follow up to my message to Wayang. I recently reached out to the establishment directly to enquire about the 3% credit card charge, specifically about the establishment not posting nor informing customers upfront about this additional 3% credit card charge. I informed Wayang that it's good and honest practice to notify customers. Most important, let the customers decide if they want to pay the 3% credit charge. I'm attaching below the comment from Wayang. I'll let the readers decide the customer service that stems from this establishment. It's a definite NO for me. " Wayang L. Hello Sue! I think you are the ONLY person complained about the charge for 3 % fee belong to Credit Card Company. When I do groceries for the food you order, the market charged me 3% for credit card, otherwise 0 charged for cash. So, please wake up. " This is an update to Wayang's response: Here's the issue: It's not about not wanting to pay the 3% credit card fees! It's not about troubling Wayang restaurant staff to go shopping for ingredients! It's about dishonest practice: Wayang failed to clearly disclose the 3% credit card fees to its customers. The cashier failed to mention the 3% credit card fees to me! Here's the rationale: Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 1524 on June 2024- This bill essentially allowed restaurants to charge service fees, credit card convenience fees, and mandatory gratuities to customers. However, the fee must be clearly disclosed on the restaurant's menu alongside the other prices of food and drinks. So a customer cannot be surprised when the bill comes that contains additional fees. The key is "the fee must be clearly disclosed to customer."

Yelp
Food 5/5 This is the only restaurant that I can find that serves Nasi Bebek (Duck with Rice), and they do it so well, very flavorful and just like the one I had in Indonesia Service 4/5 Short staffed, but they do what they can, and service is very friendly. They also do catering. Ambiance 4/5 Location and ambiance are average, and not a demerit to the restaurant. This is a very casual hole in the wall restaurant, the food speaks for itself

Yelp
We were craving Indonesian food last night and decided to try this restaurant in Alhambra. It was later in the evening so it was empty inside. We were told by our server that it was much busier during lunch. Undeterred, we entered the dining room looking forward to our dinner. The menu has a broad range of choices. We went with the nasi bungkus and the ayam kremes. They ran a couple of specials which we took advantage of, including the tasty and free soup. The food was flavorful and spicy. We also ordered an es teler, which really helped calm down the spice. I will note that the fried chicken in the ayam kremes was a bit dry to our liking. Otherwise, everything was fine. Note that they add 3% if use credit card, but do offer Zelle for those of us who don't want to pay that additional fee. We would come back, probably during lunch so we can get a better sense of the vibe.

Yelp
Nice small family owned Indonesian restaurant in Alhambra! The spicy fish nasi goreng fried rice was absolutely amazing and you can adjust the spiciness when ordering. Relatively inexpensive as well and the lady working here made sure we enjoyed our lunch there. 10/10 would recommend!
google avatar

Nina S.

Yelp
Uh.....burnt my tongue . The foods is good if you can eat spicy . The foods came super slow but good .

K E.

Yelp
This place is really for Indonesians craving their home country dishes. iOtherwise, with so many other Asian eateries with similar types of food, the quality is just super average. We ordered the nasi bungkus rice dish, a rice noodles soup with meatballs and tofu and a sauteed water spinach dish. The water spinach was the best dish since it was fresh. The fried chicken in the rice dish was dried and over fried. The broth in the noodle soup had a super gamey taste like it was cooked in mutton, and the meatballs were the same: gamey, spongey and not fresh tasting. Glad that we tried this mom and pop place but unfortunately it didn't warrant a desire for us to come back anytime soon. Service was adequate (and the lady was sweet) as there were only a total of 3 parties but I could see slow service concerns if there are more customers.

Yelp
Food and service was very good. Recommend! Would go back again when craving really good Indonesian food. Staff is short but I didn't mind. The cashier was very very friendly.

Yelp
A solid five for the food I ordered - the fried cassava appetizer (very crispy and loved the spicy shrimp sauce that accompanied it); the sizable delectable nasi bungkus which i think 2-3 people can share. I wanted to order dessert after the meal but couldn't get the waiter's attention- maybe next time. Service is really slow and street parking on Valley is 1 hour. Park on side streets Raymond or Ethel - 2 hour parking. There was only 1 person taking orders, bussing the tables and acting as cashier. Spent almost 2 hours at the restaurant. Maybe I'll order the dessert together with the regular meal so I don't have to wait next time.

Yelp
Had a lovely lunch here. Staff were very attentive and friendly. Customer service was great. The flavors were very yummy and tasted like a home cooked meal. Definitely a hidden gem. I will be returning.

Yelp
100% my favorite restaurant in greater Los Angeles and it is not even close. I have two recommendations: ayam gerpek and nasi bungkus. The latter is more of a general sampler. The former is a type of fried chicken that comes with a little dish of sambal, and this sambal is like crack. It is seriously one of the most delicious things I have ever tasted. I wish they would bottle it, but I think its flavor is probably due to its freshness. Neither of those dishes has ever missed. I also like the signs posted around the restaurant saying something like "We are not a fast food restaurant. We are cooking your food and it takes TIME." They're actually pretty fast, but I appreciate the sentiment.
google avatar

Irene W.

Yelp
Holy, everyone is seriously sleeping on this place. Everything we ordered was so delicious and expertly cooked. The wait for food is a bit long because they are severely understaffed, I believe 1 waiter that also goes to help the 1 chef in the back. Everyone here is so nice and the food really exceeds expectations. I think the most notable thing was how they fry their protein. Nothing battered too much or overcooked. They've somehow gotten the skin to be crispy and flavorful, while still maintaining the flavor of the marinated protein and it's piping hot and not dry in the slightest, unless it's the jerky and even that was super yummy. All the sauces provided with the meal were so packed with flavor but the spice level is intense, but not the type where you want to stop eating. The prices may seem high but trust me, the portions make sense. I got the plate that has a variety of proteins and sauces and it was too much for 1 person, heck even 2 people would walk away stuffed from this. There's minimal parking in the back but street parking is available as well. If you come, which I highly recommend you do, please come with patience. The meal is well worth the wait.

Yelp
I happen to have a partner who just loves Indonesian food so we had to try Wayang in our neighborhood. It was a chill night so we ordered take out and phoned our order. The person on the phone was very friendly and sweet to answer all of our questions. I actually wanted to try the fried whole fish with chili sauce but they didn't have fish that day. We opted for Mie Goreng, Nasi Kuning Komplit, and Chicken Satay to take home and enjoy. The Nasi Kuning Komplit includes yellow rice, fried chicken, beef randang, potato fritter, fried tofu, egg, and spicy sauce. The ingredients in the spicy sauce make the whole dish. We saw ourselves wanting to dip everything in this spicy sauce. It was amazing! The Mie Goreng was so much more tasty than the Miegoreng noodles you can purchase in little baggies at the grocery store. Eating Mie Goreng from an authentic Indonesian restaurant definitely topped it off for me - I can't go back to packaged Mie goreng anymore sorry! My boyfriend loved it so much that he asked me recently, "When can we go back?" haha! We'll definitely be back here for the wonderful service, delicious food, and great time.

Yelp
Great place for Indonesian food. It's nothing fancy but has cozy vibe and away from the busy area. Parking is street parking nearby or in front of their restaurant. Currently they're having summer promo (2024) which offers 15% of the entire menu. They're also offering complimentary sweet/sour tamarind (sayur asem) soup and free lemonade. Tried their Nasi Bungkus - rice with egg curry, beef jerky, jackfruit, some chicken - served in the banana leaf. It is on spicy side which I can handle, it's so good and so tasty. The portion is pretty good and you can share - it's good for 2 people. It also comes with 2 different chilli sauce - placed on the side in the same plate. Gado Gado is so good - one of the best. Not skimping on the peanut sauce. It comes also with some chips on top. Pretty good size too for appetizer. Definitely will go back to try more of their dishes and take advantage of their promo while still available. *This place used to be Wong Java and and have change in the ownership. That's how Wayang came in with the new name. Restroom is in the back. There are pictures along the wall toward the restroom. It might be pictures of the owner with some customers and/or how they started and the journey of Wayang.

Yelp
Good Indo food, a little bit long wait for your order but the food is great. Clean small place.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow the flavors are incredible! I ordered both the Nas Bungkus and Chicken Satay and they were very tasty. Very authentic! Highly recommended. The owner and girl who works there are very friendly and helpful. She really cleans the tables with disinfectant sprays and wipes after each guest leaves. I have seen many restaurants do the one-swipe cleaning, which is disgusting!

Yelp
Nasi Goreng, Mie Goreng, Beef Rendang, emping. All that was new to us until we visited Jakarta and Bali, Indonesia. Now that we're back on American soil, we've been craving some Indonesian food. So I let my fingers do some Yelp searching and came upon Wayang in Alhambra. I knew we would be in Rosemead so we planned to try out Wayang, since it's not far at all from where we were. Wayang is a nice little place, but because they have one server and one doing all the cooking, have some patience because they are working hard to give the best Indonesian food and service. All the ordering is done online even if you wish to dine in. It was nice that they had photos which allowed me to choose some new items I was not familiar with. We made our choices and my one word description of the food here at Wayang is AUTHENTIC. With great flavors brought great taste. The Nasi Goreng (fried rice) is not super oily unlike your usual Chinese restaurant. We tried two styles of noodles which were the Mie Goreng and Kwetiau Goreng Sapi which is very similar to a chow fun with beef. There is a lot to choose from so whenever we are near this area, we're eating at Wayang. We have a few Indonesian friends, so we're definitely recommending this place.

Yelp
Walking in I knew this place was already one of those hidden gems with a homemade feel. There was only one other table at the restaurant while we were there, but it was probably because of a slow Sunday night. Note that this place does close pretty early on evenings around 7pm. My family and I opted in ordering: 1. Gado Gado (7/10) 2. Chicken Satay (9/10) 3. Ayam Rempah (9.5/10) 4. Kwetiau Goreng Ayam (8.5/10) Gado Gado came out first. I never had this dish before but it was alright, had some sort of chip, sauce, and veggies. It has bit of a kick but nothing real spicy. I found that the chip was a bit hard to chew, though overall it was an okay dish. Chicken Satay is a banger. Loved the sauce and the rice cakes that came with it. Meat was juicy and tender, and wasn't too chewy. Had the perfect amount of flavoring. Ayam Rempah is my favorite. Ever since I went to malaysia back in the summer, I've been craving this type of fried chicken and rice dish. I was not disappointed eating here. The spices were a perfect blend, the batter and crispiness was leveled with the rice. Everything was just *chefs kiss* Kwetiau was my father's favorite of the night. Overall, you can't really go wrong with this dish. A little kick but not too heavy either. The owner came by the say hi to us at the end of the meal and was super friendly/hospitable. You can tell they're passionate about the food they make and everything is 100% housemade. For anyone looking for an authentic Indonesian restaurant or halal joint to visit around the 626 area, I'd highly recommend coming here. Good stuff for reaaaal.

Yelp
I visited here many years ago when it was Wong Java House. We did have some language barrier when ordering, especially my husband in particular was looking for the Bihun goreng noodles. Turns out they haven't served it in a long time, however it was still on the menu. We decided to share the chicken mie goreng, fried chicken 6 pcs, and stir fry sauteed water spinach. The fried chicken was very dry, like the desert miss the rain. The sauteed water spinach only had a one chili pepper warning, thinking that it's mild but it was spicy to the death level. The only saving grace was the mie goreng which tastes and looks like what we had at other Indonesian restaurants. I hate to give a low review to a mom/pop restaurant, but perhaps there was a communication issue since there are many good reviews on Yelp.

Yelp
This is my first visit, and I ordered the fried noodles and a fried fritter made from soybean called tempeh mendoan. The tempeh mendoan was fried to crisp. Although the tempeh inside the batter are the soft kind, like how tempeh mendoan normally is, usually tempeh mendoan are meant to get fried half done (before it crisped). Their version is more like just normal crispy fried tempeh. But don't get me wrong, it's tastes amazing! If you love fried fritters, you HAVE to try it. It's crisp, flavorful, made of soybean, such a joy to eat. And moreover, it comes with REAL indonesian chilies. It's not jalapeno, it's not thai chili, it's the fresh and spicy chili. I'll definitely be back for the tempeh alone. There's not much i can write about the friend noodle, except the fact that this the best indonesian fried noodle in LA. Or at least top two! It tastes truly indonesian, not indo-adjacent like other indo places that serve fried noodles that kinda more like pancit or chinese fried noodles. Wayang's mie goreng (fried noodles) comes with the right noodle, the right vegetables, the perfect sauteed eggs, it's just perfect. Other favorites that they offer is a bit pricy. But kinda understandable, because it's sought after by indonesians. For instance, nasi kuning (turmeric rice with assorted proteins), ayam geprek (fried chicken pressed into spicy chilies), and nasi bungkus (kinda like japanese bento or korean bibimbap: white rice with assorted proteins and gravy).

Yelp
This place is so good and you can tell they make everything with care. Not greasy or sugary. They pay a lot of attention to quality ingredients. Even the water tastes good, they must filter it.

Yelp
Food and drinks speak for itself, and there's no regret after waiting for the meal. If a trip here is planned, I highly suggest calling ahead to order before arriving as everything is *truly* made to order. Everything about Wayang screams 'mom and pop' shop, which is a welcome change from all the characterless, plank canvas restaurants.

Yelp
One of the best Indonesian Halal cafes in the San Gabriel valley and probably Los Angeles. Food takes a little longer but well worth the wait as everything is made fresh from scratch even their delish sambal. Friendly and casual with all the Indonesian specialties for food, snacks, desserts and drinks. Super friendly family service and cozy large dining area. A must try for Indonesian food one of the best Gado Gado, Ayam and cendols! Plus no msg!

Yelp

Yelp
They claim as authentic indonesian restaurant, but as indonesian as always eat very origjnally indonesian food, their food just oke. Not really original authentic, just oke, the soto betawi the soup is too thick, maybe because they used canned coconut milk so the taste is too sweet. Their lamb and chicken satay also dont have smokey taste, maybe because it not grilled over the charcoal. also we ordered bakso abang2, but the taste is too salty,But overall, their taste is oke

Yelp
I ate dinner at Wayang on 1/18/2025. It was my 1st time there. I had their chicken satay and their nasi goreng ayam and both were vary good espesially the nasi goreng ayam. Very good service in a pleasant atmosphere. Lily runs a fine establishment.

Yelp
My friend and I were really excited to try this Indonesian restaurant. We have ordered the fried rice with fish, the dried salted fish tasted old and stale, that made the fried rice tasted stale as well. We mentioned this to the waitress, and she took the dish back to the kitchen. The chef then came out and showed us a jar of dried fish, claiming it was fresh and had been bought just last week. However, they didn't offer to replace the dish or suggest we order something else. Instead, they insisted that the fish was fresh. To make matters worse, it took almost an hour for our dish to arrive, and we were still charged for the stale food they took away. Poor service, plus stale food, means I won't be coming back. I've had much better Indonesian restaurant experiences elsewhere.

Yelp
One of the best Indonesian food I've had! The food is so flavorful! We got the noodles and fried chicken. You have to be able to take spicy food! But some of the ones that aren't spicy are the noodles which is sweet and the beef. Will come back and try their soups!

Yelp
Formerly Wong Java House, Wayang Restaurant has adopted a new name. They made some minor changes to their menu, but overall it is the same Indonesian fare. We showed up at 11 AM sharp on a week day to try their food. We went to Wayang when it was still Wong Java House, but we were looking forward to the new changes. We ended up getting nasi bungkus, nasi goreng, and mie goreng. Their menu listed a nasi goreng special which included an Indonesian omelette, but the server said they didn't have it the day we went, so we got the regular nasi goreng. The nasi bungkus was quite delicious. The rendang was a bit dry for me, but the taste was definitely good. I loved the generous serving of sambal and green chilis. The chicken was ok, but the jackfruit was solid. The nasi goreng and mie goreng were very similar, one being fried rice and the other being stir fried noodles. The stir fried noodles had very strong, bold flavors, and I loved the mie goreng a lot. I could definitely taste a hint of sambal which added depth to the flavor. Overall, solid Indonesian restaurant, and one I can see myself coming back to.

Yelp
Pocked this place by random but was pretty surprised. The jackfruit shaved ice is so good. And the dish is spicily delicious!

Yelp
Just ate here for the first time and honestly, it was really good. The food came out fresh and full of flavor. You can tell they actually care about what they're serving. The staff was super friendly and made the whole experience feel comfortable and easy. The vibe of the place was chill. Definitely a spot I'd come back to or recommend to a friend.
