"Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe? Beaches, sailboats, a quaint downtown, and historic mansions—Newport, Rhode Island, is a quintessential New England town with Gilded Age pedigree. And many of its hotels are designed to match that persona, from cozy Victorian-era B&Bs to classic Shingle-style resorts. While Newport has continued growing with the times—there are several sleek boutique hotels in town now—its one untapped market is the more casual, youthful traveler. That is, until the Wayfinder opened in July 2020. With a Scandinavian-meets-midcentury-meets-coastal-cool aesthetic (think pastel color-blocking, retro light fixtures, and rattan furniture), the hotel fits in with other en vogue millennial-focused hospitality hotspots in the Northeast, like New York City’s The Rockaway Hotel and upstate New York’s Scribner’s Catskill Lodge. What's the backstory? The Wayfinder is a project by hospitality firm Dovetail + Co., founded by hotelier and developer Phil Hospod—the company’s first project was a collaboration with Urban Cowboy on the acclaimed Urban Cowboy Lodge. For the Wayfinder, Hospod tapped design agency Reunion Goods & Services to transform an old, generic hotel into a funky lifestyle spot driven by local talent, from artists to bartenders. Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book? There are 197 rooms that range from standard kings to two-bedroom suites, accommodating all types of travelers. Quite a few have outdoor spaces and kitchenettes, too. The rooms’ layouts might recall those of the rooms in nondescript chain hotels—remember, this is a renovated property—but their decor is anything but unremarkable. There’s wainscoting, plush textiles, and works by local artists that create homey beach-chic vibes. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? Nope, it’s free. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at? The Wayfinder excels at F&B: the on-site restaurant and bar Nomi Park is run by Anna Burnley, Tyler Burnley, and Chad Hoffer of the local Mission Group, which is responsible for popular Newport restaurants Thames Street Kitchen (TSK), Mission, and Winner Winner. Nomi Park serves elevated American classics all day (don’t miss the burger!), and the kitchen also handles room service and poolside dining. For a quick grab-and-go option, the hotel has a coffee counter that sells snacks and light bites. And the service? You won’t get white-glove service here as you might at other Newport hotels, but that’s exactly the point. The staff is far more casual, but equally as helpful and kind. What type of travelers will you find here? Given the Wayfinder’s more laid-back attitude, it’s hardly surprising that its guests are fun-seeking couples, friends, and young families—many of whom have brought their four-legged pals with them (yes, the hotel is dog-friendly!). There’s also quite a bit of event space here, so don’t be surprised if you run into a wedding party during your stay. Is there anything you'd change? The location. The Wayfinder is not within walking distance of Newport’s boutiques and restaurants, so having a car is a must. On the plus side, all of Newport’s main sights are within a 15-minute drive, and there’s ample parking at the hotel. There also aren’t any views to speak of—the hotel is inland, not on the waterfront, and the rooms overlook either the parking lot or a tree-lined backstreet. The Wayfinder’s location is not a dealbreaker, but it’s definitely something to keep in mind when booking. Bottom line: Worth it? Why? With a more favorable price point and a more casual atmosphere than its neighbors, the Wayfinder is the place to stay if you’re looking for an affordable, personality-driven, and Insta-friendly hotel in Newport." - Stefanie Waldek

We loved our stay at this fun hotel. The room was comfortable and very nice. It's been renovated and has a great retro vibe. The gym was very nice, and they have bikes available for guests to use. We didn't try the restaurant, but we it looked like it was good as well. Overall, this hotel and staff impressed us and exceeded our expectations. We will definitely be back for another stay.

my family and i were really excited to stay here. the pictures online looked really great! looked like a fun unique space. when we arrived to check in they told us our room was ready early. woo! huge plus. until we got to the room.. to say we were disappointed is an understatement. the room was absolutely disgusting. rugs stained and dirty.. brown substance all over the walls.. dirty curtains. dirty stained and wrinkled sheets.. didn’t even look like they had been changed. not a single light worked. the coffee maker didn’t work. the phone didn’t work. our refrigerator door didn’t open it was stuck on the rusty screw that was supposed to secure it to the counter. the pool had band aids floating around!!! i called the front desk from my cell to voice my concerns and was told we’d get another room. then when i walked down to the front desk i was greeted by a less than professional manager who said “ya no we’re booked sorry” she offered me a “discount” on my room. how about a clean room?! nearly $500 a night!! ridiculous. we ended up traveling all the way back home because we didn’t feel it was safe or sanitary to sleep there. i’m not sure where they are getting their photos from they post online but do not be fooled! this place is a dump!! i wish i took more photos!! these don’t do the filth any justice!!

I was hesitant to stay here based on the recent negative reviews, but I was very happy I didn't let the reviews turn me away. It is so hard to find a hotel in Newport that has a reasonable dog fee and that allows dogs bigger than 25 pounds. The Wayfinder was super welcoming to my 100-pound Rottweiler. Our room was clean, spacious, and the beds were extremely comfortable. The lobby and restaurant looked very nice; I will definitely try the restaurant during my next stay. The nice lady at the front desk gave me a late checkout of one hour for free. The housekeepers were also very friendly and accommodating. One thing I would say is I wish they had luggage carts. Ignore these bad reviews and stay here, especially if you have a dog with you!

Let’s start with the pros…The pool area was great with lots of seating, towels, and a small snack bar. The staff were friendly, helpful, and calm despite a busy hotel. The rooms were as pictured with beautiful decor and ample space. Our room even had a cute little balcony with two chairs. This hotel had lots of parking and a small fitness center. The Cons…Our room had plumbing issues. The shower had almost no water pressure, and the toilet in the room ran continuously and loudly throughout the stay. I questioned the cleanliness of our room because upon arrival to our “clean room” there was a long black hair on the shower wall, and a soda can full of ashes left on the balcony. The hallways felt dark and dingy and did not match the rest of the hotel (unclear if this will be renovated). I do think once the lobby, bar, and restaurant open back up it will be a different experience here. But without those amenities and some of the issues we had with the room it’s hard to give this experience more than 3 stars. I do think there is hope though and would love to see it when it’s fully open and hopefully update this review.

The Wayfinder was not a bad hotel to stay at. It's not in the hood! It's in front of an abandoned casino that's been there since COVID. That doesn't make the area a ghetto. Once you check in, they will give you a complimentary drink ticket for the bar. As for the bar, it's not a full bar; they only serve wine, beers, and seltzer drinks. I believe they serve food, but I'm not sure. The room was okay; it had a modern look with a mix of old features. The carpet was stained, so always keep your slippers on. The room does get hot in the middle of the night. There is NO iron or board. I had to request one, but it was not available, which I thought was weird. The room is dark until the morning open the cartin, and the lighting is orange. For lady that suck to do your makeup. The location is a 3-minute drive to the Navy base and a 7 to 10-minute drive to everything else. So, it's not a bad location. There is a good pizza restaurant and Chinese food nearby.

My family and I stayed at this hotel during our Labor Day trip. I would like to highlight the customer service. They were clearly booked and busy during this holiday weekend, but the customer service was outstanding. Even though it was late at night, staff members were attentive and efficient in providing services. As a customer, Lisa, Daniel, and Emre were staff members who wowed me within this busy weekend to make my family’s stay here smooth. I would recommend this hotel for those stopping for a quick trip in Newport. Also, I would encourage those who ran into any issues to communicate with the staff because they are extremely patient and understanding. To be frank, staff cannot read every patrons’ minds (just like any service industry) who come through their doors, so a little patience and communication goes a long way! Fabulous stay!

** ALSO NOTE- The room was not cleaned by housekeeping AT ALL during our stay Extremely disappointed. A fixer upper motel 6 that is being advertised as 5 stars, which it is not. Extremely overpriced. Multiple sections put together with different dingy lighting. Booked this place for a birthday weekend, called ahead of time to ensure the room had a bottle of champagne and nice birthday surprise for my partner. Walked into the room to nothing. Went downstairs to complain, the entire staff seems to be contracted from an outside source and most of them do not understand English or how anything works at all. They had no idea I called, couldn’t find champagne, bounced me between multiple people looking around frantically. Not a good start to the weekend. Bar is pre batched cocktails only, limited selection. Do not even think about asking for anything you want. Only plus I would give is the pool. Better off spending your money at a place that makes it worth it.

We chose Wayfinder for our wedding room block this summer, and honestly were very disappointed. We had stayed ourselves prior to the fire, and had such an amazing time. Something must have changed though, because I ended up apologizing MYSELF to all our guests for all the issues we experienced. Upon arrival, the lobby was completely packed, and staff were sending guests to the wrong areas of the hotel. Many of our family and friends ended up being sent to an incomplete floor, and had to ask around to find the correct wing to their rooms. My mother with mobility issues ended up walking around for 10 minutes trying to find her room. Many of the rooms also had issues - my room had a retainer left on the shelf, my parents room had a bloody earring on the floor, a bridesmaid's room had false eyelashes on the floor. And many rooms had functionality issues - a friends shower didnt work, and the grooms room had a broken AC. But my biggest problem was the communication. Our After Party was taking place at Wayfinder as well, and we were assured (both in our contract, and via email the week prior) that Nomi Park would be the after party location. As we walk into the lobby the day before our wedding, not only is Nomi Park not open, but it is not FINISHED. Zero communication was given to us by staff or our event coordinator for the hotel. I even emailed our contact to ask for insight and she never replied. I ended up having to send my wedding coordinator around the hotel the morning of our wedding to figure out where on earth our after party was going to take place. And no one could tell us if they were providing a bar (which again, was in our contract). We ended up being hosted in a conference room, and had to tell guests as they walked into the lobby after the wedding where to go. If we had known that would be the party location, we never would have booked our After Party there. We still (3 months later) never received any communication from Wayfinder explaining what happened or apologizing. It still puts a damper on our wedding to think about how chaotic our time was trying to deal with the hotel and keep our guests comfortable. We tried to provide a good experience for them, especially those who travelled in for our wedding, and it ended up being the most difficult part of the weekend. For the price that we paid for our room block, it definitely wasn't worth the money. I really enjoyed Wayfinder the first time we stayed, but unfortunately they have missed the mark after reopening. It is such a shame since it's a beautiful space!

Yelp
I recently stayed there with my dog & mom. We stayed there a few nights on the weekdays. My room was a 2 queen bedroom & balcony. Decent price. It's a quiet friendly location. 10 -20 minutes drive to downtown Newport attractions . Great for families and kids because there's a pool. Unfortunately, their restaurant Nomi is still under construction & closed. There is a small section where you can buy snacks & drinks. There's plenty of restaurants like 8 -10 minutes drive...Antonio's pizza had delicious pizza! Loved that it's Pet friendly and there is a pet fee per night Although, they do need to keep up with maintenances cleanliness such as old hallway rugs, some indoor stain rugs, ac on the low side, etc . Can tell the rooms are getting old Lobby area looks pretty great with nice decor! I didn't really use much of room services calls. The staff was around the area so I would ask things in person & they were friendly. This is a casual hotel if you're looking for something fancy this is not for you. (Similar to holiday Inn)

Yelp
DO NOT STAY HERE. This place is a trap, and I agree with the various poor ratings that have been included regarding this place. Bottom line, it's an old worn down Motel 6 with sprinkles on top to attract millennials, this place was awful, and the attempt to try to gentrify it was weak and laughable. The kid at check in had no idea what he was doing, not well trained, and after hearing there was a wedding party here I knew there would be some ruckus later. Place was packed, most likely because it's on the more "affordable" side of the hotels in Newport, the instagram posts nice pictures (lies) and people think to stay here. The room was shabby, there are stains on the floor of the hallways, there are no places to put your clothes away, we got two hangers. The beds weren't great, the AC was like a loud car engine. The whole place was rocking like a club until around 2am, banging, running down the halls, slamming doors, and I get it for a wedding after party, but management not doing anything to try and keep it quiet was terrible. The worst part, for me, was that we had a room on the second floor above where the pool is, and the lights stay on outside, ALL NIGHT. The shades don't cover the light and it poured into the room, this was awful. The star comes from the shower being decent, the parking lot having spaces, and thats all. Terrible place, I heard it caught fire and almost burned down a few years ago, probably shoulda let it burn down completely. Awful.

Yelp
Stay here with my wife.OMG It was one of the worst stays ever. The room We stay wasn't clean, vacuum. The bathroom shower looks like it had mold. Inside the hallway was so dark. Not bright. Felt like a motel 2, not even a motel 6. In the hallway, the carpet inside the room had stains, and it looked like dog pee. Horrible.

Yelp
I recently stayed at this hotel, over Labor Day weekend. I have to say it was the most interesting hotel stay I've ever had! They are still under construction for more than half of the establishment, and the other half seems to be put together. Upon arrival, I walked into the entrance and was greeted by Dan. He was very friendly and very helpful, after check-in, he gave me a mini tour of the space and showed me the location of my room. I really appreciated this, given that there are two different houses for hotel rooms. The areas of the hotel that are finished are very cute and decorated with a trendy vibe. The pool and the gym are quite cute. The decor style is a combination of bohemian and modern. There are plenty of spaces to park and the signage around the hotel is pretty decent. One thing I really appreciated was that the hotel did not charge resort fees, given the state of the overall resort. They also delivered breakfast each morning, as a complementary offering. The breakfast included a piece of fruit with orange juice and a muffin. I cannot eat gluten and stay away from sugar so I took my bagged breakfast to the downtown area and gave the food to some homeless people. I recommend others do this, if you are not going to eat the breakfast, they provide. There are homeless people in downtown Newport, and they were very grateful for my offering! I have to say - it felt good. Back to the hotel..... Overall, it was a good stay. One additional benefit is that it is close to the downtown (Thames Street and mansions). It is about a seven minute drive. I would recommend this hotel, but be aware of the construction factor, and there are still some sections of the hotel that look like they need attention (the hallways being one of them - older carpets and low ceilings).

Yelp
This hotel is under going a massive renovation and is still operational. Their website is very misleading and does not inform customer of the hotels current state of what to expect. I arrived last night and could Not find the check in counter until I was escorted by a security guard to a makeshift counter. The hallway had a loud fan on due to a water stain on the carpet which I could hear in my room. The carpet in my room had stains as well. The one positive was that the bed was comfortable. What a sham!

Marty R.

Yelp
There is no elevator. I was on the 3rd floor and did not appreciate having to haul my luggage up the stairs after paying a $25 amenities fee. Apparently elevators are neither a basic necessity in a hotel nor an amenity. The fee was for the pool which was closed at 8 pm, before I arrived. Room was fine. Bed was comfy. Pretty sure someone was using the entire hallway for hotboxing.

Garrett S.

Yelp
Cons: Remodeled mainstay hotel (had to have been bare minimum low bid construction budget). Best thing about this "hotel" is checking out & lobby/bar area. Rooms lackluster, humid, AC struggling, dead bugs, 2-3 inch gap under room door, floor stains. Animal friendly "hotel" dogs barking echoing through hallways and into your room. It's literally a motel 6 with a nice lobby and room decorations. Hallway carpet old and stained. Lipstick on a pig Pros: Nice employees, drinks are good, lobby very nice !

Ali R.

Yelp
From the location, 5 minutes from town, to the charming welcome of a new color filled lobby, to the cool spacious bedroom with separate sitting area and TV, to the very comfortable bed with soft pillows ( so important) and the hot shower, we could not have been more pleased with the Wayfinder Hotel! So glad we didn't book at a large chain in town. This is a great jumping off point to explore the cliff walk, the mansions and the seafood restaurants Newport is known for.

Kimberly D.

Yelp
This hotel was the cutest! We were in town to see my friend run the marathon. The location is about 10 minutes from downtown Newport and the wharfs, so it's not walking distance, but if you don't mind that, this is the hotel for you. It's super clean, with modern decor and fun little things along the way. I loved that they had the local company Shore Soap in the bathrooms (hand soap, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash) because I am a big fan of their products. Check-in was a breeze because it was all done on my phone, including a digital key. It was super easy to share the key with others, as well. Beds were comfy, digital thermostat, clean linens. Great shower. My ONLY issue with the hotel is the TV wasn't working well - it was super pixelated/delayed and unwatchable. Luckily, we didn't really care to watch TV so it wasn't an issue. We booked the hotel with one of their packages, Sip and Save, which gave us a discounted room and two free cocktails, which we chose to have at Nomi Park the next morning with brunch. I have a separate review for the restaurant, but I highly recommend! The food, staff, and decor were all excellent.

Ashlee M.

Yelp
You can tell the new owners are really trying to turn this place around but there are some things about this place that just do not make sense. Solid 3.5 but since they're relative new I rounded up to a 4! When we got in our room it was missing: a refrigerator, a microwave and chairs for the table. We had just ordered over $100 in take out from Brick Alley Pub and we had to eat it off a bench! We also bought some food and snacks at night so when you have a 5 year old it's a must have. They did end up bringing one about 45m later thank god. So that's a plus. I really loved the lobby and the decor and the direction they are trying to do but they just aren't there YET. The pool area is awesome and me and my son had a blast in the pool with all the floats as well as playing a round of corn hole. I think they typically have a bar as well outside but for some unknown reason it was closed. There was a good number of people at the pool- although no lifeguards were on duty; there were 2 young individuals "guarding" the pool area. So it's a dog friendly hotel but they don't allow you to bring your dog to the outside pool area- which was VERY DISAPPOINTING! The restaurant was FANTASTIC (breakfast). I got this specialty French toast and it was one of the best breakfasts I've ever had! Lindsey our waitress was super friendly and attentive; a little on the expensive side but it was 100% worth it! I also liked the open plan in the restaurant and the 12 tap style was pretty cool. Our room was "basic" to say the least, but overall it was not good considering so much was missing (fridge, microwave, chairs, no iron). I know they're still renovating so I sort of let a few things slide. But housekeeping realllyyy needs to step it up- because I found a LOT OF things that definitely needed a good cleaning in and outside our room. In our room, the windowsill, the carpeting and the bench. Outside our room: every single waste basket I encountered was completely full & the "gym" had a lot of trash on the floor. The space in the room did look quite empty it needed something else perhaps a desk or recliner. The tv was nice and had all the amenities. The beds were nice and super comfortable and I loved the antique chest. Our room had a cannabis magazine but right next to it was a sign that said $300 fine for smoking ANYTHING in the room, which is EXTREMELY HIGH - our room was not even $300 to rent so quite a high amount! The gym was really sad & they had minimal equipment; i'm talking like 6 machines when they should have WAY more considering the size. However let's hope their still renovating and adding machinery. They offer free yoga on Sunday's which is a plus. overall I think we would return - but we will wait until their finished with their renovations!

Yelp
Recently just stayed here and was quite disappointed upon arrival. The social media marketing team does a great job at portraying what they want this hotel to be. We were very excited to stay here (based off photos, instagram and the website) and upon arrival were quickly disappointed. The hotel is not done. Kids running up and down the halls. Lights are so dim in the hallway it's eerie. The hallways also have a very odd smell. Once in the room it was clean and do-able. You can tell this was once a Hampton inn or something similar (not everything is new and they tried to keep some of the old and change little things to make it look new). Gym is small but I will give credit for the equipment and clean environment. Pool bathroom was never cleaned. Outdoor seating area is in a TINY part of the parking lot. Not at all an enjoyable or relaxing place to sit. Overall felt very disappointed with my stay here and will not be returning. We are sad because this place could have a lot of potential if done and managed correctly.

Yelp
The hotel is situated a few miles from the tourist area which was a plus for us. We stayed a total of 4 nights after I scored a travelzoo deal that included a 60% discount from rack rates plus a $25 gift card for Nomi Park, the in-house restaurant/bar, for each night of our stay. There is a $20 per night activities fee that includes use of the pool, fitness center and bikes, but more importantly a complimentary glass of wine or beer at Nomi Park. The hotel has recently been renovated and the public areas are quite hip/attractive. The rooms themselves are adequate with room service being the only issue. We arrived a few hours before official check-in and were told they would call as soon as a room was available. Not a problem, but no call was ever received so we returned a little past 4PM and discovered a number of groups waiting for rooms. We were then given priority and checked-in after a few minutes wait to a room with a king bed, no closet and barely adequate lighting. On the plus side the room was quiet and the bed comfortable. The next morning we advised the front desk we would initially not be requiring room service and would be using our towels twice. The following morning we requested service before noon, but were told they do not service rooms after check-in due to covid-19 concerns so we asked for a change of towels and were told it would be taken care of immediately. On returning at 1:30PM the towels had not been changed so we again requested a change. Approximately 2 hours later a bag of miscellaneous towels was brought to our room. In spite of these few negatives, we were reasonably happy with our experience and would not hesitate to return.

Yelp
I didn't stay here, but I was here back in April to pick up my race packet for the Newport Marathon. Packet pick-up was in one of the rooms near the southern end of the hotel. From the outside and what I've seen, this place looks like a nice quiet and quaint little place to stay. They also had an on-site restaurant called, Nomi Park.

Genesis C.

Yelp
This hotel is truthfully amazing. I normally am on Yelp writing bad reviews but this on the other hand was an AMAZING stay. I felt like I was in California somewhere while I stayed here! The place is decorated beautifully. Very artsy spot for pictures. Awesome pool in the back AND they offered us free drinks from 4-6 at the bar. Me and my boyfriend had an amazing time and Thank you Carl at the front desk for being so inviting! Will 100% go back in the summer time :)

Stanley B.

Yelp
A solid 3, that needs to raise the bar on a few things. For instance, closets, lounge, elevator, front lobby....the staff was very friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Truly wonderful experience on so many levels. I stayed here Thursday - Sunday over 4th of July weekend. Initially, I was apprehensive given the current circumstances with covid-19 but the hotel did everything they could to make guests feel safe and welcome. Masks are mandatory in all public space and housekeeping is limited to minimize contact (but services are available upon request). The hotel itself is *beautifully* renovated - seriously, I was smitten with all of the decor in the rooms, restaurant, lobby, and pool deck. Speaking of the pool - it's absolutely lovely and they seem to have a good system going where reservations are staggered to allow guests to remain socially distant. They also have poolside cocktail service - yes, please! The restaurant and coffee counter are fabulous as well. The Wayfinder is located in a former conference center so it's not super close to downtown but everything is just a few minutes' drive away. Definitely want to make this a regular summer getaway!

Yelp
Ok so visiting Newport found this hotel so we booked it fair price close to bowmen's wharf BUT only by car. Hotel itself was pretty good clean etc. We booked a double Queen because it offered a balcony that they described as a city view...not a 100% true it views the parking lot and if I would know that we wouldn't have booked that room. Also room came with a stocked fridge(soda/bubbly/juice)...I didn't even know that was a thing anymore not sure about anyone else but I bring my own so it would have been more beneficial to have an empty fridge that I could have used for drinks and food. Also would have been useful to have a small microwave in the room especially if your staying for 4-5days. Transportation issue...we drove from DE to Newport and we are use to using Uber/Lyft when we plan on having a few cocktails and maybe it's because it was early in the week that we checked in but there were no cars available most of the time. Some hotels provide shuttle to a main point ie Bowmen Wharf. Wayfinder should consider a shuttle to bowmen's Hotel staff is very available for questions. But I would definitely stay closer to Bowmen's Wharf

Yelp
I only checked the reviews on TripAdvisor and that was a mistake. The TLDR version of this review is that this was easily one of the worst hotel/hospitality experiences I've had in my adult life (past 25 years). Find a different place to stay. Any other place. I understand that we are still in unprecedented times due to COVID. That does not excuse poor communication and poor attitudes. Those are both items that are always in our control. The combination of poor communication and mismatched expectations made for a bad stay. I'm writing this review almost 1 month later and I'm still hot about our stay. Here is the list of issues we encountered during our 2-night stay: Check-In 1) Room was not ready for check-in (we tried to check-in at 6 PM and upon our departure at 7 PM it was still not ready). 2) Reception was harried and did a poor job communicating. They were not being supplied with information to share with guests. This was a trend where those that you could find/communicate with were not management and thus had no information or authority Room 1) The room door made a loud rattle every time someone used a hallway door. 2) There is no closet. There was a strange hanging rack similar to what you find in a micro-hotel..but not what I would expect at a "resort". 3) Rug was stained General Conditions 1) Our hallway was constantly a staging/storage area for housekeeping. 2) Some areas looked like constructions zones 3) Other areas didn't look like they were being kept clean 4) Many stained rugs throughout the property Communication This was the biggest issue. The hotel has built-in automation for the reservation system (looking forward to your stay email, check-in early email, etc). Yet, for all the over communicating by automated systems...they couldn't do any real in-person communication. The phones didn't work. The SMS system they requested you to use (in lieu of the phones) did not respond. The staff that you could find were few, frazzled, and had no answers. This was made explicit when on the 2nd night we took the "sorry we didn't have your room ready drink" coupon to Nomi Park. We were going to do drinks and an appetizer before we went for dinner. Instead, we were told that if we didn't have a reservation...they would not serve us. When I explained that we were trying to use our drink voucher, they begrudgingly said they would serve us drinks but we could not order any food. While the drinks were being made, the employees were complaining (right next to us) that because of "f-ups by housekeeping and the front desk they have to deal with this BS". Expectation For a "resort hotel" that was charging a $20/night resort fee, it is selling a bill of goods. As others have mentioned, the place was an old roadside motel. While they have done some things to make it cute & give it character...it doesn't come close to justifying a $300+ rate and $20 resort fee. If I had stayed at the Motel 6 around the corner and experienced this...it would have matched my expectations and the price ($89). I picked the Wayfinder because this was a kid-free getaway with my wife and I wanted to treat her. Obviously, that did not happen. The final indignity is that on my check-out date there was no manager on site when we checked out at 9 AM. I asked for the manager to give me a call when he got in (they thought it would be around 11). Bryan was supposed to call me so I could talk about our stay but I never got that call. I responded to the automated feedback email from William Rademacher (the GM) last week. Even with the poor marks and feedback, he didn't respond. Newport is a lovely part of the country. In prime season, it can be expensive to visit. For those looking, I suggest paying up for an option that is by downtown or having a more economical stay with a national brand (Marriott, Hilton, etc) on Rt 114. I had hoped that The Wayfinder was going to be a nice compromise between the two. Instead, I got a high price and a poor experience.

Yelp
On first glance, the rooms are lovely, well decorated and unique. However - things go downhill quickly. Carpets are full of stains, air conditioning barely cools the place, hair all over our room that didn't belong to myself or my husband and to top it all off - we pulled back the comforter to find stains on the sheets. Attempted to call the front desk - the phones don't work and the text service they have in place goes unanswered. After going down to the front desk, the concierge did not seem overly concerned but did move us to a different room. The next room was more of the same - no bed stains this time but the cleaning left a lot to be desired. Informed the front desk of this when returning the old room key and was told "there isn't much more we can do for you." Classic case of the Instagram highlight reel does not match the reality. For the amount of money this place charges they really need to step up their game. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. You can 100% find a better place to stay in the Newport area. Do not waste your money here.

Yelp
Would definitely give 4.5 stars if I could! Such a cute hotel, booked through booking.com and was super impressed during our two night stay. The bed was unbelievably comfortable, and the room was super clean. The hotel is about 10 minutes from downtown (with traffic), so it offers a quiet escape. Complimentary breakfast was delicious, the pastries and fruit were so fresh and delicious. Would recommend to any one looking for a getaway to Newport. They offered a complimentary drink the night we checked in but had other plans!

Yelp
In most ways, the Wayfinder hits the sweet spot. It's close to downtown Newport, but not so close that it's a snarl of traffic and noise and crowds killing each other for parking. It's economical but not cheap, cute without cloying, and neat without fussiness. Basically, if what you really want is the romantic ideal of a non-corporate retro beach town motel without the grimy reality of the real thing - and you want to pay a little more than motel rates for a little better than a motel - the Wayfinder is probably for you. If you've ever bought a "clean cotton" scented Yankee Candle, its aesthetic is probably your aesthetic. I was surprised by the number of negative reviews, but I think a lot of that can be chalked up to peak season during active renovations and a pandemic. I went for one night in late December. It was quiet, bright, friendly. I could hear other people occasionally in the hall, but not in other rooms. I checked in early with zero hassle. The restaurant was closed. The room was adorable, the water pressure was fine, and the bed comfortable. It's only a mile from downtown, so an Uber is going to be cheaper and easier than parking downtown anyway. Your mileage may vary, but we had a great time.

Kate M.

Yelp
My mom grandmother and I loved our stay! Not in downtown which was fine because it's a short drive. Was advertised as a boutique hotel and definitely was not. But we are shocked at the one star reviews! Some reviewers do look pretty bad. But we got lucky, very quiet since we were the last door on the hall, our room was very clean as well. We ate breakfast here and it was so good and everyone was kind. We are surfers, didn't come to surf, butttt it was surf chic for sure! The pool was nice and they even handed out free popcicles!

Yemi 6.

Yelp
I received a free breakfast comp when I arrived only to be informed after my meal that the order was 90$ for two orders of pancakes with sausage and egg. and the breakfast comp only covers 12$ per person. instead of being honest with the lack of communication the server and kitchen staff essentially said I was lying and I was previously informed. now I'm stuck with a bull I shouldn't have and no type of recourse from the staff if I would have know I wouldn't have ordered anything. I'm not sure who on this planet would pay that amount for that level of a breakfast. Other than that rooms were clean and appealing. Avoid any "free" breakfast comp. Don't even think anything on the menu is 12$

Yelp
Booked a room here for my birthday and got an awesome deal online through their website! It was 15% off with a complimentary upgrade (they moved us from a Queen double room to a king suite!), late checkout (2PM), and 2 complimentary drinks. Check-in was super easy and staff was awesome/accommodating! They let us know about free welcome drinks at 5PM at Nomi Park as well. The room was clean, and well decorated but the rooms are paper thin. All throughout the night, I could hear sounds, people walking around, traffic outside, etc.. i was hoping for a more quiet night away from Newport but was kinda bummed that it wasn't quiet. Around 8PM after coming back from dinner, we were hoping to grab more drinks from the restaurant but we're told a pipe had burst. They gave us our complimentary drinks to go which was awesome! Although the pipe bursting affected my shower, it was fixed about an hour after. Overall, a good stay for an affordable price with great staff!

Yelp
Stayed there for 4 nights, such a wonderful experience! As a dog friendly hotel the price is very fair, staff are very nice and helpful. Love the details in the room. I have to say coming from NYC, I was surprised how good the food was in the hotel!!!! They even had nitro cold brew, sooo good! The pool was open, and chairs were nicely social distances. I would give a 6 stars if there's an option on Yelp.

Yelp
Here's a recap of my experience at the Wayfinder: I booked one night (Thurs night) to celebrate my birthday which was a Friday with my family. There were four of us. I booked a 2 bedroom suite. We obviously aren't getting out much during the pandemic, so we were all looking forward to this. We arrived around 1pm hoping we could check in early. Because the hotel was so busy, there were no rooms available. Completely fine & understandable. The front desk asked us to return at 4p. We returned at 7p to be safe to change before our dinner reservations at 9p. The front desk lets us know that our room has mechanical issues and won't be ready until 9 or 10pm. But they can offer us different (one bedroom) room half price. I kindly said, we just want a room to change and shower in and then we can switch to the 2 bedroom when we're back around 11p. This was not an option. The manager then came and offered us the one bedroom with a king & pull out couch for free. This made it tolerable. I asked for one hour additional for late check out next day - not allowed. We went up to the room. The air conditioning was off so the room was 85 degrees. The cover was leaning on the wall & I noticed the following morning when I stepped on them that the screws were on the floor. The electrical outlets weren't strong enough to power a hair dryer - I tried two different ones so we couldn't blow dry our hair. The mattress still had plastic wrap on it and we had to make our own bed for the pull out (I understand if there are Covid rules but it would have been nice to have it made before we entered the room). There's a nice mini bar/counter area but nothing is stocked so it's sort of pointless. Next morning, we woke up to loud construction on the other side of our wall. Our one day of vacation to sleep a bit. We had to speak at a higher volume so we could hear each other. It sounded like they were dragging heavy furniture on a metal floor - horrible noise. Overall, the fact that this stay was FREE made it TOLERABLE. But I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone while it's undergoing construction/renovations. No one should be paying money to stay here. I would consider adjusting my review once renovations are complete & you want to offer us two nights to stay there. But otherwise, I will not be visiting this property again.

Yelp
This place is awful! We checked into our room to find burn marks and large stains on the floor that were either vomit or urine. The manager said we wouldn't be charged and gave us a paper showing a zero balance. After, I posted a review online. the manager charged my husband's card and said she would reverse the charge if we took down the review. I have honestly never dealt with such poor customer service not to mention the manager trying to blackmail us to take the review down. Now, I know why you only find more positive reviews----such shady business practices!!

Salvatore P.

Yelp
The Wayfinder hotel, find your way to another hotel. I give it two stars because the water pressure in the shower was great. The staff at the hotel were pretentious and apathetic to their customers. Some of the staff were pleasant, while others specialized in rudeness and anti customer service. The woman at the pool and Josephine were delightful. This is the only reason I'm giving 2 stars not one. As far as the views, it looked like a demilitarized zone in Beirut. This was the perfect example of lipstick on a pig. I suggest going camping instead of going to the Wayfinder.

Rita C.

Yelp
Anyone looking to stay at the Wayfinder should take caution before booking. On a recent stay we were charged double what we were quoted over the phone. The bill came after a night of unattended dogs barking and a 2am bridal party in the hallway. The walls are very thin and there is constant noise. Also, make sure to ask for a paper receipt upon checking out. We didn't get one and didn't notice the overcharge until a few days later on the credit card. We tried calling the hotel about 20 times, literally, before getting through to straighten out the bill. The manager was accommodating but it was highly frustrating connecting with her. We will never be staying here again.

Sam L.

Yelp
Great spot that is hip and cheap! The rooms and design are awesome! My only complaint is that the first room we got wasn't cleaned thoroughly and there was hair in the bathroom and on the bedroom floor. We called and explained our concerns to the front desk and they quickly fixed up a room for us and gave us a drink voucher for the trouble which was nice of them. However, the second room was cleaned better but we still managed to find a couple hairs laying around in the shower. At this point we decided not to make a fuss about it. Overall great place to stay if you're looking for something affordable yet modern with a great in-house restaurant - burger was amazing!

Yelp
I have never wrote a bad review before.... So this is hard to write. We had a wedding at 5pm with shuttle at 4:45pm. We wanted to check-in to our room to change and get ready after a long commute. No rooms were available and there were other large groups of people waiting who also needed to be at a wedding. I don't understand how rooms aren't available when you check-in. People plan their vacations and weddings around this. The hotel made this an absolute nightmare for us and I had to get ready in their bathroom which had no outlets for hot tools. I've never been so stressed out in my life prior to a wedding. Do not stay here if you need to be checked-in! Expect your room to be ready late at night!

Alex C.

Yelp
The following things happened during my stay here: - Wanted to order room service. Phone system doesn't work so had to physically walk to restaurant. Placed order. Food never showed up - "Housekeeping" people literally barged into my room twice without knocking - Fire alarm forced an evacuation of the entire hotel Also entire staff literally doesn't give a damn. Dude at front desk told me he wished he were anywhere but there lol. Summary: this hotel is trash AF

California D.

Yelp
Not good. This hotel was rather dumpy, yet very expensive. The carpets were gross, our room was dirty, and smelled like something rotten. The whole place had the feel of a beat-down frat house. The staff was rather rude. Drunk people were roaming the hallway, being loud and obnoxious until 2 am - not cool if you have kids with you. Would not recommend this hotel, even if they were giving out free rooms.

Yelp
Don't let The Wayfinder suck you in based on looks. We carefully selected The Wayfinder after reading the great reviews and beautiful pictures. Sadly their service was FAR from sufficient. The Bad: For starters, we were supposed to stay with them a week prior to this trip, but had to cancel as we were hit by Hurricane Isais. We were forced to cancel our trip due to the extensive damage to our home and did not have power for 5 days. The Wayfinder REFUSED our claim for a refund. We still wanted to stay here once everything was fixed at home, and regret making the decision to still visit the hotel. -Customer Service We arrived prior to check-in and asked to check in early, and were put on a cue should anything be available prior to 4:00pm check in. We left for the beach for the day, and received a call at 5:15pm stating that our room was ready... an hour and 15 minutes late of regular check in time. After calling about our room issues (see below) we stopped by the desk to say that we were heading to dinner should maintenance arrive to fix the ac and water pressure. The front desk manager QUESTIONED why we even traveled during Covid if we were not comfortable with maintenance entering our room after check in. He was "just curious" for his own reasons. What Customer Service Is That?!? -Our air conditioning was not working properly. Upon arrival, we lowered the temperature to 65°, and instead the temperature rose in the room to 73°. We had to call the front desk twice before the phone was even answered, ringing for over a minute straight each time. The hotel did not allow us to switch rooms due to Covid-19 policies, but instead would send maintenance up to "fix" it. We were uncomfortable with someone other than ourselves entering our room after it being deep cleaned prior to our check in for Covid policies. They arrived while we were out to dinner, the temperature never changed in our room. See picture to see how the ac was "fixed." -Water pressure in the shower was subpar at best. My gym has stronger water pressure than this. We asked to have this looked at as well, it was never fixed. -The walls and doors were PAPER THIN. We could hear every conversation in our hallway along with slamming doors through 2:00am, someone knocking aggressively on our door at 12:45am and people fighting in the hallway at 1:00am. -The hotel claims to be putting people in every other room, to "socially distance" guests in rooms. There was someone directly next to us (hence the people rightly and person knocking on our door while we were sleeping). -The room was on the back end of the hotel, which backed up to a road which was extremely loud, and seemed to have a lot of motorcycle traffic. -The hotel ask that everyone wore masks in public places, while most guests respected this, many people were not wearing them and it was not enforced by the hotel. -There were massive, open bags of soiled linens all along our hallways as we made way to our room when we arrived. The housekeeping member that we encountered when we arrived had her mask under her chin, and was screaming on her cell phone in a guest hallway, rather than working. The Good: The hotel did an amazing renovation, making the common areas (lobby, restaurant, pool) and rooms very aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The room was fairly clean, and the products were nice. Overall I would never come back here or recommend staying here. It was also quite far from downtown and all beaches. You will definitely need a car to get around town and be prepared to constantly pay for parking in town. We also noticed many Ubers coming to the hotel.

Laura B.

Yelp
This cute, trendy hotel is sure to become a Newport hotspot in no time! Though it's not within walking distance to town, it's just a couple miles down the road. You'll find a beautifully decorated, cozy hotel with warm and inviting receptionists! The rooms are clean and cozy! And make sure to grab a drink or a bite at Nomi Park. The best part? My dog could stay here too! However, I paid for a bed and bowls and didn't get them.

Kristen S.

Yelp
Staying at The Wayfinder is like visiting a friend with awesome, funky taste who is also a fantastic cook and keeps an immaculate home! It is super clean, comfortable and honestly I didn't want to leave the hotel at all during my weekend there. Check-in was easy and Daria was really helpful. We had dinner at Nomi Park Friday night, and the food was beyond delicious, and it didn't hurt that they were participating in Newport Restaurant Week. Bonus! We ordered almost every dish on the menu between 3 of us, and every single bite was amazing. Even my cousin, who is both a chef and sommelier, was impressed. They had a long list of fun, unusual cocktails as well, each one a miniature work of art! The staff were all wonderful and lovely, and made you feel like friends and family. I have previously stayed in downtown Newport, but The Wayfinder is a quick and easy drive into town, and parking was relatively easy to come by. Just make sure you pay careful attention to the signage. Or just leave your car at the hotel and get a cab into town! Plenty of free parking at the hotel, which is key. But more about the hotel. We upgraded to a King Suite, which was really roomy and comfortable. I slept on the pull-out bed, which had a thick, supportive mattress, so no problems there. The sheets are soft and luxurious. Also, there is a heavy blackout curtain you can use to separate the bedroom from the living room area. This also helped block all the cold air from the a/c, another bonus for me! When we called down for blankets and pillows for the couch, they brought them up right away. Definitely upgrade your room, if you can. I really liked the fact that they have large, refillable glass pump bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap and lotion in the bathrooms, not the plastic throwaways. Really good quality, too, from Shore Soap Company. The bathroom was tiled in beautiful blue, and had lots of under-sink storage space for all your toiletries etc. Also, they don't automatically change the towels every day, but they will happily do so if you ask. More bonus points for ecology! There was also a live plant in the room, which was a nice touch, plus a table and chairs, L-shaped couch, coffee table, refrigerator, sink, wine cooler, mini-bar, Nespresso machine, wine glasses, coffee and espresso cups, and all the fixings for your coffee experience! Oh, and 2 TVs..see what I mean about not wanting to leave my room? Overall, The Wayfinder receives an A+ from me...and even though Newport is an easy day trip from Boston and the Cape, I will easily be able to find reasons to justify a return stayover soon. Must check out the pool...

Yelp
My experience at this hotel was top of the line. The staff was incredibly welcoming, the room was clean and comfortable, and the hotel restaurant (Nomi Park) was absolutely delicious. I dined for one and had the burrata, the steak frites and the mezcal momma cocktail--the perfect combo. The hotel is also situated in a great location very close to downtown Newport. I was able to get a taste of the night life, and relax by the hotel pool during the day. The Wayfinder is a great option for work or play, and I'll definitely be back!

Harrison B.

Yelp
No one staffing the front desk at midnight. Sign said "be back in 5 minutes". Very unprofessional

Stephen F.

Yelp
Ate at the restaurant and felt like I got ripped off. The food is way too expensive. I had better quality dinners at the 99. Will never go back. Such a shame, the steak house before was much better.

Dana J.

Yelp
Easily one of the best experiences at a hotel. Booked for a night to celebrate a birthday, and the Wayfinder didn't disappoint. The decor was beautiful (our group was impressed that all the plants in the lobby and sweet cove were real!) and the service was phenomenal. Michael at the front went above and beyond for us. We were able to grab a drink at the bar and enjoy it next to the fireplace in the lobby. The room was clean and just what we needed. We're already planning another visit!

Alys S.

Yelp
This hotel is located in a perfect spot right outside of Newport (exactly 1 mile away-6 min drive). This is a brand new renovated hotel. They are pet-friendly hotel but are able to request a pet free room. They leave the rooms for a day or 2 in between guests due to Covid-19. Restaurant is great, just expensive! Rates were affordable.... pool was brand new, everything in room was brand new (tags literally hanging on the lamps.) room service closed early (kinda annoying) and they did not come to clean the rooms (b/c of Covid-19.) must make reservations to go to the pool! I would highly recommend. CVS and supermarket located down the block.

Kasey M.

Yelp
We loved our stay at the Wayfinder! The aesthetic is so fun and cute! Ubering into downtown was quick and easy. The king room had so much space and the bed was super comfortable! Shout out to Cooper who made us some fantastic late night drinks! He made one of the best old fashions I've had! Highly recommend The Wayfinder Hotel!

G M.

Yelp
The decor was beautiful and the front desk/restaurant/pool/grounds staff were ALL above & beyond friendly and accommodating (Isaiah)! The beds were 10/10 comfortable and the food at the restaurant was amazing. Just bring a car and you're good to get around while there.

Yelp
The hotel is recently redone. It's a 4.5 star experience for a 3 star price. The food: Very good, anyone who complains about the food here is an idiot and likes to eat at TGIF The pool: It's great! if you are expecting Gurneys - it's not that. But if you are expecting a cute hotel pool with great drinks it's that. The rooms: The beds are comfy and the rooms are spacious - approx 400 sq feet - the bathroom amenities smell lovely and are from a local company The location: a bit off the beaten path but a 7 min uber ride (12-15 dollars) into the center of town. My only complaint is they haven't figured out how to service rooms with water late night. Everything else is great! Lots of cute puppies that don't seem to disrupt the other hotel guests.

Betty M.

Yelp
The room we booked was expensive because it was a holiday weekend (as expected). It was pretty spacious. Room and bathroom was clean. However, when it's time for us to take a shower it took about 10 minutes for the hot water to kick in. The shower pressure is not good either. We all decided to take a shower at home on our last day. They charged resort fee even though we don't use it. They didn't honor our AAA membership either. Our room is next to front parking lot. You can hear people talking outside. Woke up two nights in a row because people are just too loud. Probably because Nomi restaurant is just below and people were already drunk and loud. Overall it was ok but with the same room price I can probably get a better hotel to get a better rest

Sel M.

Yelp
Stayed here for two nights and had a fantastic experience! The room was very clean. The restaurant downstairs is not only delicious but super convenient for room service and last minute breakfast plans.

Yelp
This is my first time at Newport, Rhode Island, so we chose to stayed at The Wayfinder hotel. I'm rating this hotel based on the pricing level of any hotels out there in this area. The rooms are between $150 - 300 for stander kingsize room, and $300 - 450 for the suite rooms. Over all this is a mid-level price point level hotel, so I took that reference as my expectation of judgment. To be honest, It is actually pretty good for what it is. My friends and I were here for 5 days, we had both stander room and the suite room. I stayed at a suite with my dog (Forgot to mention this is a dog friendly hotel) The hotel prepared dog bed and bowls for my dog before we arrive, the rooms are clean, neat and cozy with a good sound blocking design and mid- firm mattresses, we all slept very well. I have to say my favorite part of this hotel is their restaurant - Nomi Park. Nomi Park is co-managed by a famous local New American food group, who's also the owners of TSK. The food choices in the menu are nothing you don't know, but the best of it's own kind. I have to say as a picky New Yorker foodie, I absolutely surprised by ALL the quality and taste of the foods on the menu. my favorites are the quiche from breakfast menu and lobster roll and Mino burger from the dinner menu. (Also don't forget to order their nitro coffee too). There are minor things that can be improve too, sometimes the service can be little slow when it gets busy, but all staffs are super friendly and kind. Anyway, we had such a great time by staying there.

Louise S.

Yelp
We are locals and decided to try the Wayfinder Restaurant last night. Had to send my red sangria back. It was very bitter and the waitress said I was the second person to send the drink back that night. The menu was very pricey and limited. I had the pork chop and while that was ok, b the green beans were hard and dry and totally uneatable. My husband had the fluke and after having a $32 dish, he left hungry. With the hefty prices, they could have served some bread or perhaps a salad before. We will not be going back. It is a shame because we like to support local restaurants especially in the off season.
