Wayne State University

Our experience with Wayne State has been extremely disappointing, especially when compared to the positive experiences our other children have had at three other in-state colleges. The university feels far more focused on generating revenue than supporting students and keeping them healthy. I was initially concerned about the high dropout rate during our campus tour, but we moved forward because my daughter loved the urban atmosphere. Unfortunately, we now understand what it means to be “Wayne Stated,” and it has been frustrating and disheartening. I would strongly recommend exploring other institutions.

Over 5k in mandatory housing and meal plans for my kid to have a mold infested room and be so hungry everyone in her family is sending food. Do not recommend. Update: The school is moving them out of the mold infested room into a more expensive room and charging the difference. For their own negligence.

Decent university. Some professors really don't deserve to teach students. I'm a parent and have been going through colleges, and my kid who's going here has many complaints about a variety of professors. I wonder how people are chosen to lecture, but do better. You are holding the students' future in your hand.

A gem of a university located in the Heart of Detroit. If possible, reside on campus and get involved in everything WSU has to offer!!!

I am writing this review to express the deep frustration and pain I feel as a transfer student watching incoming freshmen receive full tuition under the Heart of Detroit Tuition Pledge and Wayne State Guarantee --- while students like myself are left without support. This policy rewards timing over merit, need, or effort. I've worked hard to return to school, facing greater financial pressure than many of these 18-year-olds, yet I'm excluded simply because I arrived later. I am honestly struggling with extreme feelings of envy and resentment toward those students. It's difficult to watch others receive what I desperately need, especially when I know I have worked hard and overcome challenges that many have not yet faced. This is not a personal attack on any student --- rather, it is a response to a system that seems to prioritize timing over proven resilience and achievement. It feels deeply unfair and creates a divide between students who are supposed to be part of the same community. I urge the university to re-examine these programs!

Wayne State was the best school that I got accepted into after getting an Associates in IT at Macomb Community College. I had to do a full 4 years here to get a Bachelors in Computer Science - because I wasn't in the Higher program hardly anything transferred. But I will say I loved getting the University Experience even though I was a commuter. I thought overall it really propelled my career as I got hired by GM to be an intern during my time at this school. They also offered a ton of networking events to get hired. I ended up earning scholarships by having good professors that encouraged me to participate in programs that would allow me to apply for them. I joined some clubs and made some friends but none of them really stuck. You have to really try to be social here to get a friend group. But I did have some good study groups and learned a lot. I was in the school of engineering and 9/10 recommend if you are like me and deciding between middle ground schools. The big 3 hire big from here.

Some of the most frustrating "customer service" I've ever experienced. If you're a student on financial aid be prepared to spend a lot of time in that office sorting your affairs every.single.semester. Some great professors, wonderful library resources, and a nice gym available to students and faculty. Parking is expensive and a lesson in frustration.

Wayne State University is a great commuter school, for those who fit in. I did not. Therefore, I graduated from a different school. I think I would have had a better experience if I had picked a different major: perhaps Public Relations, Psychology or Political Science. Parking is a nightmare, and people don't speak. My classes were too big. Mixed feelings about this school.

I write to highlight a specific aspect of Wayne State University (where I once worked, long ago). If you are an architecture buff, you should stroll the campus to see a collection of the designs of Minoru Yamasaki. In particular, McGregor Memorial Conference Hall is an excellent example of his style, human modernism influenced by Islamic patterns. Yamasaki has been forgotten, or, perhaps that should be phrased as he has been remembered for two destroyed structures. His Pruitt-Igoe housing project in St. Louis was imploded in an intentional repudiation of the ideology of urban renewal. In the movie Koyaanisqatsi, you can watch its fall set to a Philip Glass soundtrack. His World Trade Center towers in lower Manhattan were the target, with the Pentagon, of the terrible terrorism of 9/11. They remain iconic, but now not as the pillars representing the success of the American economy but the vulnerability of the American political system. Yamasaki, originally from Seattle, was based on Detroit. He belongs to the heyday of the Motor City: 4th largest in the nation, a genuine rival to Chicago, where raw materials entered the self-sufficient factories such as Henry Ford's River Rouge and automobiles with the mighty V- engine emerged, from an assembly line which also created the blue collar middle class thanks to the Treaty of Detroit . . . People aspiring to change the world, Yamasaki among others, regarded Detroit back in the day as exciting, a place of the future, not the magnificent wreck it would become. There is a book about Yamasaki and Detroit, if you wish to delve into the details. I have not canvassed all of Yamasaki's portfolio. I know he had multiple commissions at higher education institutions. There are buildings at Oberlin and Princeton, for example, which bear a family resemblance to what can be seen at Wayne. I believe from my reading that the most extensive set of his output is at Wayne.

I attended the open house with my cousin and her two children, after a family reunion, in Detroit. This location is located in the downtown area (I think) of Detroit. The school was clean and the employees were helpful. This has nothing to do with the school, but make sure to try the restaurant around the corner.

I had one professor who liked to take naps when he was supposed to lecture. He slept 75% of the class and a student was assigned a chapter to teach the class each week. Then the last 10 minutes of the class he talked about social justice and how there were no equal rights. I had a language professor that was mean to me. I hope she is gone. I had a statistics professor who didn't know how to teach statistics. She had to grade on a very strong curve so she wouldn't get in trouble and people that would have received an F in her class graduated with a B -. Forget about asking for assistance after you graduate with your resume, interview skills, or internship. Those departments won't help or respond to their emails. Staff members were rude when they did reach out. They cannot keep the homeless people away either. I was taking an exam and a homeless person walked in to ask for money.

If you think Wayne is in a bad state, check out the Garth State. Dana Carvey is like - long gone. Pretty cool University in Suburban Detroit right near the downtown. The area around it has definitely been rejuvenated and gentrified for all the students who obviously have a decent amount of money if they're coming to school here. I mean let's face it grants and scholarships and all that be damned - it still costs a f***ing sh**load of money to go to college so the poorest of the inner city Detroit people are not going to be able to come here are they. For this reason you do have some problems on campus between poor neighbours and richer students. That happens in a lot of urban college campuses. Just watch your back around here, and this country needs to focus a bit more on socialism and taking care of our own, instead of me me me destructive capitalism.

The admission department will not answer any calls. I come to the welcome center to have appointment and see some one to talk to. And i have been waiting for 2.5 hours and no one show up

Wayne State University Nursing School failed to provide adequate training to their midwifery class of 2017/18 then shut their midwifery program down! In 2017 only 46.2 % and 2018 41.7% of the graduating class were able to pass their boards to practice as certified nurse midwives. Then they turned their backs on their students to help. Must do better WSU. Certainly not living up to the schools mission!

When we moved to this area from Milwaukee due to an employment move I was about half finished with my MBA that I was working on a Marquette University where I had completed my BSEE & MSEE degrees. As I scoured the area for a place to finish my MBA, I looked at a number of excellent Universities and compared practical things like length of commute, how many of my credits would transfer, and reputation. I decided on Wayne State University because they were the best with respect to number of credits they would accept, had a good reputation, and many of their classes were taught at area high schools in the evenings. Since I was already gainfully employed in a great and well paying job I was more interested in the act of completing the degree and less concerned with where. I was able to complete my MBA from WSU by taking classes evenings after work and never actually took any classes on the main campus! I felt that I got a great quality business education that has been somewhat useful during my engineering career and more useful after as I am now running my own business.

When I went downtown to classes apmost every day, there was a lot of work that needed to be done. I recently went down to talk to an advisor and saw the many changes I hoped for. A lot of the main roads have been redone and they are doing construction in other areas to redo the road. New shops and food places have opened up near campus as well. They removed parking meters in most areas and placed one giant one, where you input tje license plate number and add money. If it says maximum 3 hours, you are allowed to add more on the app as soon as the 3 hours ends, or manually walk over. It seems convenient to be able to just add money on an app, especially if you are far away. They have made a lot of great changed recently, and I am hoping it continues.

Wayne State has had a researcher who has been doing heart experiments on dogs for at least 10 years now, repeated petitions, and this research still continues despite repeated requests from the community for it to stop. The school my be diverse, but the administrators seem to be completely lacking in empathy. I hope that new students will read this and reconsider.

This is a beautiful campus. It's definitely larger than my previous school but it's interesting to walk around something so simple in such a big city. The architecture is fantastic. Unique buildings with the same designer as buildings in New York. There are great pathways between the buildings. It's within walking distance of all the major museums Detroit has to offer as well. The parking garages are some of the nicest I've seen. Super open, always seem clean. Wayne offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. If you want a big college experience pretty close to home, Wayne is a great fit.

Took the kids on a tour of Wayne State university because they have a good engineering and fine arts program.

Depending on what you study and your initiative - WSU can be a great educational opportunity. Most programs prepare you for the "real world". There's a good med school, law school, engineering school, teaching, social work, etc. Notable research actually happens here, it just goes under the radar of the general student body. Choose your professors wisely. I'm really surprised how many people from other places are familiar with WSU. Stay away from the general academic counselors at all costs and make friends with the financial aid office to avoid the run around.

I was in the art therapy masters for 2019. I am have a masters of social worker and a number of years working with veterans and crisis intervention. I found the art therapy program at Wayne State to be colorblind to the point of being dangerous. In this day and age no mental health professional can afford to be wishywashy about cultural competence and integrative care. Before my first class started Dr Karen Shurgin described her clients as crazy. The phrase crazy and nuts was used multiple times through out the duration of the course. In one assignment we discussed an article about the impact of VHS technology on art therapy. Come on people this is 2020. Why are future mental health professionals trained with such garbage? On a mid term for another class the professor has a question about a suicide prevention program that doesn't exist, has no historical relevance and the professor couldn't even describe what the program was. As a veteran and social worker who's worked with veterans and don't several suicide crisis interventions providing information like this to students is dangerous to the point negligent. I'd call it malpractice education. The professor would also talk over and treat anyone that disagreed with her with hostility. Going so far as to use personal bias in the grading process. I've never seen a more lazy professor. What kinda professor begs classrooms of students to write papers as short as possible because she doesn't like reading student papers. Why would anyone want to be educated by someone with such an ego. I returned from a 2 week veteran trauma program in Boston where art therapy was used with veterans. In a very intense way dealing directly with trauma. But when I return to the class Dr Shurgin is laughing at her own clients, telling student in a class that mania looks fun, and using interpretative models from the 1950s that teach art therapist to look for penis and vagina symbolism. It's archaic. I filed a discrimination complaint with the equal opportunity department. Which took over 6 months to respond. The student handbook says I'm supposed to be provided with a response in no less than 90 days or a message telling me what the new response time is. Apparently bold bigotry and academic incompetence requires more evidence than students testimony. Today I learned that the Wayne State University has no interest in protecting students rights or providing a contemporary education. Students are learning garbage. How many clients with be hurt by poorly trained art therapist? This isn't a matter for debate. Art therapy an neuroscience, and many other art therapy models that are evidence based and the golden standard though out the country are forgiven topics. I also filed an accreditation complaint with the National art therapy association. Today Tommy Martin emailed me back and stated that there is no appeals process. But the student handbook states their is an appeals process and the chief of staff is the last say. Why would the equal opportunity office lie to students about their student rights when filing disability complaints?

I'm a current Honors student studying Biochemistry and Spanish at Wayne State, and I definitely love it here. I've met some amazing people - the diversity at Wayne State is incredible, and it's very cool to be able to interact with people across such a wide spectrum. Living in Detroit is amazing too - Wayne State has a lot of opportunities to get involved with Detroit, and as a student you get a lot of perks (like discounted sports tickets, discounted orchestra tickets, and sometimes free tickets to events and concerts around the Midtown area through Wayne State's "Thursdays in the D" program). It's a really cool time to be living in Detroit, since you get to see the city's revival firsthand. That being said, Wayne State could definitely use some restructuring in terms of their bureaucracy. It's frustrating to get different messages from different departments, and sometimes it takes a while to hear back from administrative departments, but I've never had an issue with a professor. I know they're trying hard to restructure it and sometimes you just have to be patient - they do generally want to help you, the communication between departments just needs to be improved, and as a student, you have to be persistent.

Located in Detroit's Cultural Center area, surrounded by libraries and museums, Wayne State University offers over 350 majors for those seeking higher education at an urban university. Considered a research intensive university Motown's Wayne State finds itself ranked in the 201-300 range worldwide, putting it alongside the likes of such universities as Georgetown, University of Notre Dame, and Wake Forest. Its Law School is ranked as one of the top 100 and Wayne States ever expanding Medical School is among the nation's top 125 schools. Wayne State plays an integral part in driving Detroit's economical, educational, and cultural hub sponsoring such events like the Detroit Festival of the Arts. Its proximity to the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Public Library, Science Center, and the Detroit Historical Museum, makes this university a learning experience both inside and outside the classroom. The university is recently expanding to cater to its swelling student body by constructing more parking and more student housing. Fortunately, the local neighborhoods offer charming apartments and flats at a reasonable price. In addition, a majority of Warriors (the school's mascot) commute from local urban and suburban areas. Some notable Wayne State graduates include Saturday Night Lives' Tim Meadows, Inside The Actors Studio's James Lipton, actor Tom Sizemore, Ghostbuster Ernie Hudson, and yes, me. Changing my major 4 or 5 times while enrolled I had a chance to experience a multitude of the majors the college offers including fashion design, public relations, social work, and English. Through my almost decade long trek through college at Wayne State I was fortunate to have a multitude of professors that have forever influence my life for the better, especially in the English department. On the contrary, the student services is a stroll through hell. I had to continually request transcripts, graduation papers and more a monumental amount of times. Thankfully, the knowledge my noggin was filled with through discussions and labs outweighs the trials and tribulations.

Let's get this straight. I think Wayne is a good university. In my experience, it's probably one of the most underrated universities in Michigan. A lot of that comes from the fact that a) it's a commuter school, b) it doesn't have the word 'Michigan' in the title, and c) it's located in scary ole' Detroit. It's actually one of the most important unis in the state, right under UofM and MSU. It has well-respected programs in many categories along with Tech Town, the innovative technological portion of the school, and its law and medical programs. Still, people want to tell themselves that the additional $3k/semester spent at Western/Central bought them a better education. So they look down on WSU. Even so, there are several downsides to an education at Wayne. This review is going to require a new definition to add to your vocabulary so here's a primer: Wayned : verb. pt. (WAYN-ed) To have been completely screwed over by the backwards, poorly run, frustrating, and always illogical administration of Wayne State University. Everyone gets wayned AT LEAST once. There are simply no words to explain how terrible this university is on the administrative side. Everything that needs to be done must be done by YOU and nobody else. Your guidance counselor won't have a clue. Your department/major will drop the ball. The accounting department will inject dog seed into your proverbial paczki. And you will end up with a mouth full of it at some point. The silver lining to this is it forces you to become self-sufficient. Take my advice. You cannot count on the school to fill you in or help you out. You need to find out what you need to do to graduate and check with your department at least once every semester to make double sure you're on the right track and nothing has changed. Example: My major changed the necessary courses for graduation and neglected to tell anyone. It was like they decided to keep it a secret. Halfway through a semester, I realized my hardest and least intellectually rewarding class was unnecessary. No refunds. I had to plead with the instructor just for the Withdrawal signature by that time. I got wayned. Another problem is the absolute absence of student life. There are frats but nobody goes to their keggers to taste their rohypnol. There are dorms but only a couple and the vast majority of the student population live elsewhere. This creates a bubble when it comes to priorities. A lot of WSU students are there to get their degree. Not to work, not to socialize, not to date, and not to party. They go home and do those things. The other problem is that there are quite a few students who are just ... mind numbingly stupid. There are idiots at every university but these folks are just ridiculous. Remember that kid who sat in the back in high school and never did any work or marked an answer on his tests? The one that never broke the 50% barrier? Well he goes to Wayne and he's still failing. The upside to these underachievers is that it makes those of us who actually try look amazing. Your professors will respect you and return your hard work by working hard to make sure you're doing well. Speaking of your instructors, Wayne has some of the best. Most of them have learned by actually making it in the field they teach. For many of them, teaching is a secondary income to their jobs outside of school. These are the best types of instructors to learn from because they didn't learn it in a book. They learned from experience. Where experience is concerned, Wayne is second to none. There WILL be a number of internships available in the metro area for you to work throughout undergrad. That's the most important thing for most career paths. Wayne can help you get the real world experience and contacts necessary to hit the ground running after graduation.

I went to wayne state for both undergrad and post grad. All and all, I spent about 10 years on and off on campus. Based on conversations with peers, i can honestly say that the quality of education i received is on par with anyone from much more well known and highly thought of universities nationwide, and is comparable to state heavyweight U-M. I think the biggest knock on WSU is the urban location, but the campus itself is relatively isolated and safe and has great character. Although there are the expected non violent crime problems, i never felt unsafe. It was a great way to get in tune with the city and learn what detroit has to offer. The biggest problem with WSU is the reputation (or lack of it) nationally. It just doesn't have the prestige of a college with a good football team like U-M. Unfortunately a lot of people associate sports prominence with quality of education. Locally though, I don't think any corporation, law firm, etc doubts the quality of the school's graduates. I recommend that anyone interested in a cost effective quality education over big name campus glory seriously consider wayne state as an extremely viable option.

I'd never thought I'd be writing a review of my university. Let's see... Generally I can say that WSU is doing much better academically than would seem. Because it's a commuter school, WSU is sometimes looked at as a second choice school. That couldn't be further from the truth. I graduated from the English dept, and I'm well on my way to completing my first graduate degree. At least for the English department I can say that we have some of the most brilliant minds in the rhet/comp field at WSU: Shaviro, Pruchnic, Marback and of course Grusin. And the writing professors at WSU are just absolutely amazing. I would make one suggestion; Wayne only offers a concentration in writing, so if you're looking for an MFA, check out other schools in the state. I'm really impressed by the clout that the Law, Business, and Med schools get. They're so huge I wouldn't know where to begin... I can say that I'm a fan of the social sciences department; WSU offers degree programs that compete with the ivy league schools (For example: take a look at how many schools in the country offer a degree in "business anthropology" and you'll get what I mean.). I have a really close friend in the Psychology CASPAL program, and she has nothing but great things to say. (e.g., social science rocks. ) As for campus life, I have only a few general suggestions: - Yes, the general academic counselors are pretty poor; it never seems like they stay very long, so how can they advise anyone if they're new to the school also? - Don't park on a meter unless you absolutely have to. I think the city of Detroit supports Kilpatrick's philandering solely from the parking tickets they hand out to WSU students. They must make the parking signs intentionally confusing so they can hand out tickets... or at least, it feels that way. - Find a cafe to study in; though they tried to make the Undergrad library a calm and quiet place for readers and studiers alike, it hasn't worked; it's still a zoo. - check ratemyprofessor.com before you register for a class always. It never hurts to find out what other people are saying about a particular prof. That's about all I can think of. I'd suggest checking out Wayne as a first option, not as a second choice school. I'm really pleased with the years that I spent there (or rather, am spending there) and anyone interested in this school should go for it.

Dear WSU, You have the worst financial aid Department ever. For the five years that it has taken me to get my degree, I have been endlessly misguided by under trained financial aid officers, sent on a wild goose chases, and given wrong information. Was it a test of my character? to make me stronger? And tell me, why do you outsource your financial aid calls? You suffer from the same syndrome that universities all over the country are suffering from: you have turned yourself into a business. While you complain about lack of funding, raise tuition, cut wages and faculty, there are two administrators for every student. More and more classrooms are turning into large lectures and you hire more part time faculty so that you pay less benefits and wages. And yet our tuition is rising and I can only feel helpless when I see more dorms or large expansive building projects going up. My dollar does not vote. But in all of this darkness and despair you have given me a good education, or rather I have given myself a good education. Even when I cursed your name, as I was taking general education courses, I have walked away with a much more rounded education. I have discovered some unknown strengths (like algebra). As a sculpture major I was able to explore the hidden wonders of the foundry, and to learn skills that will stick with me forever. I have had the honor of studying underneath some brilliant professors, becoming involved in interesting programs, and attending ground breaking seminars and programs. There is room for improvement President Nolan, and I just hope that your cloud is not too high in the sky to hear the cries of students that can no longer afford to attend WSU.

I have fond memories of my WSU experience in the English Dept. I had some really good profs, most of whom encouraged us to think independently instead of parroting the prof's beliefs to get a better grade. The department also offered Technical Writing classes that have served me well professionally. Co-op work/learn opportunities are even available in the English Dept.; some positions are paying, but these are plums. There were also some real-world experiences that I still carry with me: the people from the Cass area who would come into WSU study lounges to get in from the bitter cold -- obviously not students, but at least trying to fit in quietly to enjoy the central heating in peace. I remember one woman who would quietly sit in the study lounge of State Hall (seat of the English Dept. at the time), reading her Bible. Like others writing here, I got Wayned. If you have any sort of scholarship or student loan, anything at all going through third-party payment, you will visit the administration building and stand in a long line to get it straightened out. Consider it part of your WSU heritage and bring a book. This is the main reason why I'm giving the school three stars -- it's a long-standing problem that apparently hasn't been fixed. I think the City is a great place for real-world learning. I believe the on-campus life at other schools creates a social bubble that isolates the student population from the world at large. I love the idea that most WSU people are there because they have an academic goal outside of party life. (It may not be an entirely accurate idea, but I still love it.) My favorite place to study was in the cubbies where the music students also catch up on their listening assignments. Favorite on-campus bar: Circa (on Cass). But that's a story for another day.

As the first reviewer of the school, I want to say that Wayne State is like almost every other major university in the country. Its big, cumbersome, and filled with bureaucracy, yet, there are also many bright spots in the school. Most well known, the medical and theater programs are the strongest...although there are many other schools within the university that are up and coming. Located in midtown Detroit, its near the museum district. Parking can be a nightmare sometimes, with nearby garages filling up. The campus has been sprawling since the 1930s and continues to grow. Like other colleges, Wayne State has a wide range of topics to study, an active Greek lifestyle, and is slowly building up more dorms. The only thing seriously lacking is a major sports team. Perhaps I'm biased a little, but I think its fair to say that Wayne State is actively trying to improve. Its not perfect, but at the price for an academic hour, its a very reasonable place to get your education. Instructors and philosophies are hit or miss. While many professors lean towards a liberal view, you'll find a few that are in the other direction. The school has major diversity, which can be eye-opening for many of the suburban commuters that tend to make up a reasonable size of the student population. I'm only giving it 3 stars because I've experienced other universities and am convinced the whole student experience could be run much smoother.

Be street smart wherever you go, especially in Detroit. I love this place! A lot of people have previously complained about the administration, but I really do think things are changing for the better here. Still there are homeless people in the middle of the mall, but not too bad and they basically keep to themselves. Nutrition & Food Science is a great degree to have especially if you are going into the medical field because while you are doing the prerequisites you are getting a degree!!! Wayne State today is so much nicer than say 20 years ago! Come back and see the campus and all the updates!

Excellent graduate programs, especially in Library and Information Science. Good professors and tuition is more reasonable in comparison to some other colleges in Michigan. WSU is known as a research university for good reason. True, it's located in downtown Detroit, so crime and homelessness are real problems, but that's the case with every "city/urban" college campus. Because it's an urban campus, you have to pay attention to your surroundings, but that's something people should be doing wherever they are, not just when they're in an urban area. Located near some awesome museums, galleries and libraries, so it's easy to soak up a little culture while you're at it.

WSU isn't the most prestigious university in the world, but it deserves to be ranked much more closely with UM and MSU. Its medical school is the largest in the US, and its law school and engineering programs are nationally ranked.

I went to WSU for fine art, which is why I give it 3 stars. Had I been in another department, I probably would've rated it higher, but honestly their art dept is seriously lacking in it's design area. So, a general review: Pros: * gorgeous campus! * very diverse student population * tons of classes to choose from when checking out electives * rated highly in many areas, it's up there with MSU and U of M * if you want to live on/close to campus, there are tons of options *there's a lot of cool stuff going on in the area, always something to do and new development is going on. * there are a lot of cafes in the immediate area with free wifi where you can get stuff done, I highly recommend finding one of those as opposed to going to the undergrad library (see cons) Cons: * parking! It's expensive and hard to come by. I attended when the superbowl was in Detroit, and the university sold our parking yet still held classes.... and it was during mid-terms. Was quite the nightmare. * along with parking - if you park at a meter, be careful. I came out of class one day to a ticket on my windshield - and there were still 5 minutes left on the meter! * crime, to be expected * undergrad library: it is essentially the romper room. * homeless people hounding you for money (most of us are/were there on scholarship and/or financial aid, and they think we have money?) * the advisors. You have to check various sources to get the info you need to make it to graduation, they will tell you that you need classes that you don't, and that you don't need classes that you do, etc. They are plain old unhelpful and useless. Make appointments with your academic advisor AND your department advisor every semester to go over your requirements. Otherwise, you're sure to get "Wayned"

public university, amazing fonts, decent if it can be protected.. for a public university in Detroit, it's kind of amazing... a "Research 1" university, it caters to an enormously class- and race- diverse student body... never forget it... there are all kinds of downsides and pitfalls, but at its core, the university matriculates an incredible array of local talent and skill base. Classes and faculty are in tip-top condition, despite administration (and State) attempt to eviscerate all that's amazing about this place... (if you don't know, the war is totally on between faculty and administration... faculty are those who care about education/learning/knowledge... administration are those who care about $$$) I love this university. Even though it's currently in a state of utter transformation / battlefield of class warfare... as administration tries to demolish the decades-old working-class student base and turn it into a suburban commuter debt console, smash faculty intellectual property rights, and union-bust as it proliferates part-time adjunct teaching positions... despite these upper-class political infringements into our city's intellectual legacy, the university still kicks ass and serves as one of few bastions where Detroiters have access to learning that's usually guarded for the well-to-do... I'm a proud wayne state'r... you should be too... ps. The architecture and building font are out of control... pure leftover modernism in pristine state... beautiful...

Very little refinement and it seems like no one here cares about anything. Simply put that the professors care more about their low-level research than any of their students... Do you feel like a last priority in every way possible. And any type of office our experience that I have had was completely terrible and just downright disrespectful... On average it consisted of them looking at me like I was stupid that I couldn't understand a concept that they had been studying for 30 years.

I would have to agree with Nick. WSU is a good school but is quite underrated. I think I got a good education here but I'd have to agree that the support staff, administrators, etc are often unhelpful and unmotivated.

It seems a little odd to yelp about a school, but here it goes. I completed my undergraduate degree there. I spent a few semesters at a private university for grad studies. After going broke and growing frustrated with that place, I returned home to WSU. Not a lot has changed in terms of some of the staff. I was very lucky during my first three years at WSU because I didn't have to deal with anyone except my professors/instructors. I got a rude awakening my last year dealing with the financial aid office and student accounts receivable (SAR). Fast forward 4 years and it's still unprofessional. I dealt with this woman in SAR today. She cut me off, so I had to ask her to let me finish explaining the reason for my call. She got smart, laughed, and threw my words back in my face by telling me I was being rude. Then she got short answering my questions. Actually, she never really did answer my questions. She transferred me to someone else. I guess that worked out for the best because the next person I spoke to acted like she wanted to do her job. I must say that this person was the exception, because I usually encounter unmotivated, unprofessional, and incompetent staff. That doesn't help the WSU reputation. The professors and instructors are very good, overall. Well, I can only speak for liberal arts, communication, journalism, and political science. To me, the teaching made up for all of the other foolishness that I had to deal with to get to the lecture hall. The campus itself looks different from just a few years ago. That's a good thing. The programs offered are diverse and competitive. As I said, there are excellent and competent professors and instructors. I can't comment on student life because I was and still am the commuter student. I think sometimes WSU is underrated. WSU should be looked at as a viable option, not the place you go to when the other two say 'no.' They still need to work on customer service. That's all.

Overall WSU is a good university. I received my undergraduate from there and it gave me a solid foundation to do my master's work at an east coast graduate school. I came back to WSU for PhD work and didn't finish the first time. I came back a second time but departmental politics (ALWAYS check out the dept. chair and the recent hirings when applying as a degree seeking student to any academic program. What they claim in the brochure and what research and interests the faculty have will give you a good indication if this is a fit for you) got in the way. Needless to say, the PhD is history (no that wasn't the department) and I am going into another master's program in September 2009. With the hiring of a new president that has a MD instead of the usual PhD, I believe the focus will be to repair the relationship between the med school and the administration at Detroit Receiving Hospital. Overtures were made to MSU by Mike Duggan (CEO of the Medical Center) and they will have space for their medical students. Stay tuned for that drama. Depending who you speak with, the law school has its own drama, the business school is not bad (good if you're working already and getting the MBA to advance in your job/profession, different story if you're doing career change), and the allied health professions, i.e., pharmacy, physician assistant, and occupational therapy are quite good. The nursing program is highly rated as are the sciences and engineering programs. As with everything else in life, "let the buyer beware" and do your due diligence. Some say university life is what you make it. However, in some cases, its the university that can make you. Make your choices wisely.

I went to Wayne State University for undergrad. I have a like-hate relationship with WSU. I felt it was a "good" education but I have found that there were better options for improving my resume. Wayne is no longer a great deal financially and is really not recognized outside of the state of Michigan (and even in the state I have had some negative reactions to my WSU degree). WSU is usually ranked pretty low nationally on most University reviews. As for campus life? They have tried to create SOME but you are basically dropped in the center of the largest "DEPRESSED AREA" in the United States. There is very little for an 18 something person to do on a Saturday night. It's pretty much a commuter school and thus has little social life or real life experience with other people. I found in grad school that REALLY experiencing diversity is actually living day-to-day with people to broaden your scope of the world. For all of WSU's advertisements about diversity? They actually have LESS than most schools. Driving down to WSU for a couple classes and leaving? You don't REALLY interact or experience other people. All and all, it was a "solid" education BUT for the money; Michigan has some MUCH better choices in state schools for higher ed.

WSU is cool if you're not a passive idiot trying to get through school as fast as possible and come out degree mill style trying to find a soul-sucking job asap. Take a second to think about things while you're going to school in this interesting city and "aim higher".

I been here for 8 years and been able to obtain 3 degrees coming from a community college. Some of the teachers and advisors are very professional and helpful.

I did not give Wayne State (My second home) a five star rating because of its bureaucracy know as "Wayne's World". Getting things going at Wayne state is sometimes an exercise in futility, but none the less, it is a great place to learn.

Short review/Advice: STAY AWAY! There are better, higher quality, safer schools in the Metro Detroit Area. UM Dearborn and Eastern Michigan come to mind. You can even transfer to Michigan if you do well at UMD. Long Review: This is one of the worst universities in the country, and I have been to a few. Just because it has a large student body doesn't mean anything. The fact is that the school is extremely poorly funded at just over 200 million for a student body of over 30,000. Michigan State and Michigan have similar student populations and they get BILLIONS, which is what is needed to run a school of this size. Still, it's not just about the bad funding. It's about how the school's apathy towards students. Literally, no one in my faculty (Faculty of Engineering) is available most of the time. The advisor, whose job is...well to advise, is only available TWO days a week and for four hours at that. I'm not even sure what she does for the other three days. Even worse, I have professors who only make themselves available for only an hour the entire week. I have had multiple occasions where the prof shows up 15 to 20 minutes late to a 55 minute lecture. I once had a prof show up ONE HOUR late to a 3 hour exam. It gets even worse. The campus looks like crap. I'm not sure who they put up to design some these buildings. Half of them look like mosques or churches, while the other half look like they let a five year old have their way with a bunch of lego pieces. Seriously, I'm not kidding! Just go on Google Streetview and check out some of these buidlings. The even worse part is that they aren't clean or properly equipped. I actually had classes where students would have to sit on the floor because there weren't enough chairs in the room. On top of that, they NEVER clean the restrooms at this school aside from the administration buildings. The city of Detroit already has an aging sewer system so overflowing toilets are common thing, but it's even worse when they don't get fixed. Plus, students trash the crap out of the restrooms too. There is always grafitti in the restrooms and they TP restooms sometimes. Also, don't be surprised if you see homeless people in the libraries, student center or some of the halls. It's a common place thing, so is robbery in broad daylight. I had a friend who had her laptop stolen right from her desk at the library. I had a classmate have his smartphone snatched from him while he was waiting in line at Starbucks. Funny thing is that Wayne has one of the largest police forces of any school in the country. They aren't your average university police forces either. They have sub-machine guns and full autonomy, but they do jack squat to fight crime. Most of these officers are fat as hell and all they do is wait inside parking structures to hand out speeding tickets. The school emails every student a monthly crime report that tells us how many robbers and drug dealers have been apprehended that month. The number is always zero. It always just talks about more students getting robbed, mugged and even raped.

To find this hidden gem, follow your nose (which will burn from the formaldehyde). Besides the daily specials, there is great ambiance, and tea is 87 cents. Arrive early for a good seating. Make sure to tip the waiters (wearing embroidered long, green jackets).

I went there for two years. I met some nice people. It's like a community college. BUT for those who say it's a cheap/great deal and equal to U of M and Michigan State?? Have you looked at US News and World report? WSU is a Tier 4 School and U of M/MSU are Tier ONE! Even U of M Dearborn is Tier ONE. WSU's tuition is now almost equal to "those schools" and is more than the "other" State Schools. If you have to live near home, I think there are better choices for the money.

Worst decision of my life ever was to choose Wayne State. Location sucks, tuition is extremely high, no free printing, no free parking. Staff is unhappy, unfriendly and useless. Wayne State only cares about your money. They don't care about your goals, and career. If your tuition is not paid in full (could be due to your family financial issues) or even waiting for your loan, you cannot register and proceed with your degree. They will not let you register and classes might fill out, but they just don't care! They want your money! It is very dangerous to go to Wayne State. You cannot walk outside on your own after 5pm. Someone will always harass you. Students are always robbed, and threatened on the streets by thugs with guns. If you want to succeed, and not get shot, then do not choose this school. Horrible!

I love this school, campus, culture and everything around it. Very easy to navigate and the city is becoming very hip and upcoming again. Lots of new bars and restaurants as well as events, live venues, and gatherings. The classes range from small to large depending on what course you're in. Professors are very intelligent and awesome to work with. Student life is fun if you live near or on campus other than that the commuters miss most of the experience.

Wayne state university is okay. Thats the most I can give it, since I'm not giving out a grade; the university itself is "earning it" - lol sound familiar. Its what all the classes tell you about grades. Well WSU could do so much better in my opinion. First of all I think there is a lot of GRADE DEFLATION going on. For all of you who don't know what it is well heres word origins 1010. Deflation - the decrease or eventual decline of. Wayne state University intentionally is trying to keep the GPAs quite low. Don't ask me why but the college has many "quotas". For example in both MY MICROBIOLOGY and CELL BIOLOGY classes the limit was only the top 10% of the students can get As. so if there was 565 students in the INTRO to MICROBIO class, then only 56 of them will get As at maximum (as the tests are structured to be hard so that most people will get barely passing grades). so even if you have an 89%, there is no way you can get an A if the 55 As are already given out *in most cases if the student tries hard, does well on tests, and does extra credit then they will be given an A- by a professor but OH NO not at Wayne State. All the professors are strict, harsh and unyielding in everything. Same goes with business classes to ACCOUNTING and MANAGEMENT THEORY also have the same 10% quota, but if you ask me the professor doesn't try to fill it, he instead wants (yes wants) to give kids Bs and Cs so that their GPAs go down the drain. But on the other the campus life is absolutely horrible there is basically nothing to do and oh yea a week ago a girl got stabbed in the library cheers have fun!!

As a Wayne State Alum (2006), I can say with confidence that I am very pleased with my education and experiences here. It is (somewhat) unfortunate that since the institution is within the city of Detroit they are obliged to accept most Michigan residents, irrespective of academic caliber and occasionally weighing down real classroom discussion, but in ways this diversity can be a learning experience all its own. The professors and researchers are top notch, and it really, truly is on par in the state with the University of Michigan and Michigan State.

Good all-around college with an urban campus setting. I attended graduate school here and went on to complete a master's degree from WSU. For the money, I would say the tuition costs were not out of line with other universities, but it certainly is no great bargain, either. It's not like they are paying you to attend their university! As large public colleges go, you could do far worse. I had a lot of great professors and a few that might have been just marking time til retirement, but such is the case at every major university. It has a nice library and a good medical school. The campus is sprawled out across the cultural center, but beware of crime- it is an urban-style campus with all that encompasses. I can safely say that I was never a victim of crime while attending school here, but crime is still a big problem in the Detroit area. As an alumna, I can say that WSU has a pretty nice alumni newsletter and other related mailings.

Wayne State University has been a great experience for me. I love being downtown, midtown is so great it just has a vibe that I love. Wayne State offers a wide variety of academic programs and services, and WSU is also in the top tier for research amoung all Universities in the country. I wasn't sold at first - the basic classes are taught in generic buildings and didn't impress - but as you get more into your specialty you'll realize how good Wayne State really is. They have so many opportunities that they practically throw at you through research opportunities, student grant competitions, job fairs, internships, etc .You'll also notice the teachers and the classrooms become much better quality once you are in the higher level class; as does the student body. The engineering program offers ABET accredited degrees in several different fields of engineering. They spend a lot of money on the college of engineering and you can tell. Very impressive buildings, with all types of labs with computers and really crazy looking sometimes massive machines and equipment.I hear great praise about the Wayne State Law School and School of nursing as well. There are many Professors who are highly capable teachers and educators who are also active in the community; some being fairly renown in academia. I've had some really great classes here and know it has paid off. If you are thinking about going to college, I would definitely take Wayne State into consideration.

admissions is terrible, can't get a simple question answered. If you do get a question answered don't expect it to be the correct answer or you'll waste time and money. Try to call them and they will keep transfering you to the same prompt. 1 for admissions and 2 for automated directions to the school. But the school closes at 5:00 so if you work, just don't bother trying to contact anyone at this school!!!!
