Portland Chefs, Bakers, and Pitmasters on the Stuff They Put on Everything | Eater Portland

"I use Lao Gan Ma for its mouth-numbing Sichuan peppercorns and aggressive umaminess — it lifts eggs, noodles, and even pizza — I also rely on Valentina for instant heat and acidity as a finishing sauce, and I keep mushroom powder (my preferred Po Lo Ku seasoning) on hand to boost umami in soups, broths, and cheese sauces." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Cozy and beautiful wine bar with stunning views. Sitting in their patio is the best, you get to watch the sunset while sipping some delicious wine. Their olives are delicious! Customer service is excellent, both servers were friendly and welcoming. We loved the wine barrel and it was very relaxing and quiet. Highly recommend!

We visited every single day during our stay in La Jolla—and for good reason. On our first visit, we enjoyed the beautiful sunset views while sipping on orange wine and sharing the artichoke flatbread and charcuterie board. It was the perfect way to kick off our trip. We returned on our second night to purchase a bottle of wine to enjoy back at our hotel. The staff working the afternoons of August 3rd and 4th, 2025, were absolutely wonderful—friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about their work. One even mentioned how much they love working there, which speaks volumes about the management and ownership. While I do wish the stools had backs, the stunning beach view more than made up for it. The team gave spot-on recommendations when we asked for a juicy, lightly tannic red wine—and even let us sample the wines before making a choice. If I ever find myself in La Jolla again, I’ll definitely be back. Thank you!

Google
Great experience and delicious food and wine! Perfect place to celebrate my birthday today and it was such a beautiful day to be there! Thank you for a great experience and wonderful birthday lunch!

Google
This little place is BIG, the view is so pretty, it has a very European vibe. The food is great, we had the pappedeux, salad and the pepperoni flatbread, ahhh and the best brownie bites ever. Will definitely come back.

Tatum F.

Google
Try this place during sunset. Beautiful views and good charcuterie and wine. Dog friendly too🐶

Google
Randomly came upon this place because a parking spot opened right in front and I was looking for a cute place to have lunch anyways. Safe to say I’m glad I ended up here! You enter into their storefront where they have a ton of delicious looking olive oils, dips, sauces, and wines. Then the back opens onto a balcony with a decent ocean view (theres two levels). Tasty food! Even though I accidentally ordered like a pound of arugula because I didn’t realize it also came on the flatbread LOL. Ended up eating every bite anyways! Under the arugula on the flatbread, there was really good prosciutto, cheese, and grilled onions (yum). Cute brunch vibe, there were dogs on the patio so definitely dog friendly and outside heaters 👌

Google
Ok. The servers were just wonderful. We had a glass of wine on a balcony looking out over the ocean as we tasted different olive oil and vinegar combinations. It was absolutely delightful and I bought way too much olive oil and balsamic. Love it.

Google
Hidden Gem inside an olive oil store. We love coming here for a quite date night watching sunset and enjoying delicious small dishes and great wine. Tonight we ordered our favorite humus and the cheese and meat selection. For wine we chose the 2023 Giornata 'Il Campo Bianco, Paso Robles. Phenomenal! They also offer sandwiches and flatbreads.

Yelp
I came in just looking for a bottle of balsamic vinegar to cook with and ended up having such a fun and unexpected experience. One of the staff members mentioned they had a variety of infused balsamic vinegars and kindly offered me a tasting. She brought out some bread and eight different flavors for me to try. everything from jalapeño to elderberry to raspberry basil. It was honestly such a cute moment. I felt like I was at a little tasting flight, but make it vinegar. I ended up going home with the white raspberry balsamic and zero regrets. Everyone was really friendly and attentive without being pushy. I also ordered a sandwich and chips while I was there and it was genuinely delicious!! Everything was super fresh, flavorful, and hit the spot. My only complaint is the sandwich was a little small for the price. I definitely could've gone for a bit more food. Still the overall experience made it worth it. Great service, chill patio setup, and such a unique experience. Will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
Little hidden gem! Loved the outdoor seating- intimate and quiet with a great view - amazing wine selection and delicious eats. Isabella was delightful (actually)- very knowledgeable, welcoming and attentive (but not overly). She also rocks a Marvin Gaye playlist and likes discussing books and music if a patron is so inclined. Edit: i had a dip duo - caramelized onion and goat cheese based on one of Isabella's recommendations (she didn't miss once) - delicious

Yelp
Service was excellent. Making us comfortable on the deck overlooking the small view of the ocean and turning on the heater. Ambience was superb. We shared hummus with a nice selection of veggies, flat bread, and crostini. Good wine selection included "orange" wines for Susan. At over $15/6 oz we each only had one glass, escaping with just a $50.00 bill, including a smaller than deserved tip. Sorry but we're not printing our own money.

Yelp
We have enjoyed numerous experiences here (and always generously tipped), but sadly tonight will be our last time in. To start, the wine is wonderful; the food mediocre--and the portions keep getting smaller, so really the tipping point is the service. It's always been slow but kind, so we were happy to go with the flow. Tonight, not only did we have to wait for the most basic of elements, but we were informed that we'd hit 3 tastes (after ordering a lot of food and wine) and couldn't try anything else the rest of the night. It felt shaming and pedantic, not to mention punitive. To add insult to injury, the same server asked us if we'd like to join their loyalty club upon checkout. Keep in mind, we'd been loyal patrons for over 3 years and this is the first time someone thought to ask us that? So many things wrong with the experience. Sadly, we won't be back.

Yelp
Had the best date night tonight. Great recommendations for wine. Outstanding service. Victoria and Izzy really helped us out with the right red. Malbec is the perfect oaky finish. I'll be back again for sure.

Yelp
We were seeking a quick glass of wine in La Jolla and stumbled across this tiny storefront that seemed to feature olive oils. A small door sign touted an ocean view patio with a wine list. We followed the host downstairs onto a rickety patio where they set up wood tables with stools. Service was friendly and they offered a pretty comprehensive selection of small plates and beverages. We ordered a few plates with glasses of wine. Our charcuterie and cheese platter ($28) arrived with toasted baguette slices and crackers. More cheese than meat, but could have been much more interesting if the sole salami was sliced paper thin. It would be easier eat, share and give the impression of double the amount. An Arugula Spinach Salad with nuts and bits of apple was ample and shareable. Pesto Flat Bread (read pizza) was home made and was tasty. Lemon Oil was cursory. Although a dusting of fresh grated Parm, and a few pine nuts would have been appropriate garnishes. A Caprese Panini took some time to arrive, but it was toasty, seasoned and came with a handful of kettle chips. It's a sliver of a galley kitchen, so I could imagine the person heating, plating, slicing and counting olives could be slammed at any time before sunset when a party of 6 tries to make this dinner. Parts of the patio offered slivers of views of the Le Jolla Coastline depending where you sat. Esp when a few plus-sized Construction workers plant down on balcony stools and order a few bottles of White Zinfandel. Meh on touting an ocean view.

Yelp
Ugh I love this place. We stop in every time we're in La Jolla for a glass of wine or two and enjoy the view. Decent selection of wines and snack foods where you can sit and enjoy a beautiful sunset.

Tami B.

Yelp
The staff is knowledgable and friendly, they have a well-curated selection of wines and delicious cheese plates. A cozy atmosphere with a great view and always a great experience. Our favorite server is Isabella (Izzy) she provides the best service and always makes you feel welcome. She always goes above and beyond to provide the best possible service.

Yelp
This is a great place to stop and grab a little bite and wine when walking around La Jolla or waiting for dinner. We always make sure to stop by when in La Jolla. The wines have consistently been satisfying and they are always ready with a good recommendation if you can't decide. Do yourself a favor and also make sure to grab the bread and olive oil. It's delicious. Also, the patio is a great place to watch the ocean while having a nice conversation.

Yelp
Stopped by We Olive & Wine Bar and had a fantastic time. We grabbed a table with a perfect sunset view, snacked on the charcuterie tray, spicy honey pizza, and the bread with olive oil dip--all seriously tasty. We shared a bottle of the Syrah (Victoria's recommendation), and it was spot on. Speaking of Victoria--she was amazing. Super friendly, funny, and totally unfazed by our goofy energy. Big thanks to her for making the night even better!
google avatar

Marie M.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this wine bar for drinks before dinner. Nice sunset views and good wine. Good place to escape the big crowds around sunset too. Really liked the prosciutto wrapped dates.
google avatar

Yelp
Fabulous Evening! Two words: Victoria, VICTORIA! Great server, great attitude and a lovely person! We enjoyed the space, the vibe, the food...and Victoria! Thank you so much!

Yelp
This is a nice little wine bar where you can come, sip on a glass of wine, and enjoy a relaxing afternoon with an ocean-side view reading a book. If you are here with a group of 3-4, it's probably more worthwhile to buy a whole bottle than individual glasses (there were three of us and each of us had 2 glasses, which came out to be cheaper than if we each bought our own glass separately). We also tried their cheeseboard and bread, both of which were delicious. If you are in La Jolla taking a stroll, this wine bar is definitely not to be missed. They also sell a variety of olive oil, which I will certainly try the next time I am here.
google avatar

Yelp
Great view with great food and wine! Nice, relaxed atmosphere with a view to the ocean. Charcuterie, dips, and flatbread were excellent. Service was attentive without being pushy. Pick the right wine and linger here a while!
google avatar

Alyssa H.

Yelp
The view alone is 5 stars. This was probably one of my absolute favorite places in San Diego that we went. It's just so unique and so much fun. Honestly, skip appetizers at your dinner restaurant and get them here. Everything was so good! It's such a calming place to be. I loved it.

Madison P.

Yelp
10/10 recommend. Our server Izzy was amazing! She made the whole experience so enjoyable. I'm not usually great at picking wine, but her suggestions were spot-on and exactly what we were looking for. Honestly, she made the night better just by being herself. Would definitely recommend to anyone!
google avatar

Casey W.

Yelp
This spot was such a great hidden gem. You walk in from the bustling street to a peaceful patio with ocean views. Beer drinkers fear not, they do offer a good selection of craft beer and not just wine. We got the charcuterie board and everything was delicious. My boyfriend got the Italian sandwich and he couldn't stop raving about it. Hope to be back soon!

Gabe V.

Yelp
Get a good table and you can't go wrong! It's in La Jolla cove, so I'm not sure why anyone would complain about things being pricy...that should be expected common now.

Brittany W.

Yelp
We came here because of our love of wine and noticed there was a little wine bar. Service was great, everyone was kind and chatty to help us figure out what we wanted or what something was. The food and wine were phenomenal, we actually ended up purchasing a bottle of the balsamic because it was the best one we had ever tasted. The environment was chill and had a nice viewing area. We would definitely come back!!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by here recognizing the name of the We Olive in Pasadena. I had no idea they had multiple locations! The service was just as great as the Pasadena location, but with the added perk of an ocean view! We only enjoyed the wine and didn't order food, but definitely recommend this place for good vibes and a good view.
google avatar

Isabelle W.

Yelp
This is my all time favorite wine bar in San Diego. It is perfectly tucked away in the heart of La Jolla and you almost can't tell there is a wine bar until you go inside! At the front there is an amazing olive oil store and then there is a back patio area with a wine bar! The views are unmatched, the wine is incredible and the staff is fantastic. This is my favorite place to take my friends who visit because it is so peaceful and perfect for catching up and you get these stunning views of the water!! They also have great apps/charcuterie/flatbreads if you are looking for a bite to eat with your wine!
google avatar

Mayra G.

Yelp
Great service, snacks, wine and music! I tried a lovely spritz, spicy honey burrata flatbread and the dips. The have a small deck that overlooks the ocean but it only seats like 6 people. I got to sit in a partial inside/outside table but it was setup nicely since the seats were side by side and we had the deck/partial ocean view. Lovely place and such a cute olive oil shop.
google avatar

Melisande M.

Yelp
This is the spot to go. The vibe is so peaceful and the bartenders are so knowledgeable and never disappoint. Taylor, Chloe, and Kiara are absolutely amazing and always answer my questions and surprise me with the best drinks. This place is a 10/10. This is the best place to go to weekday or weekend. Also try their pesto pizza.
google avatar

Luis R P.

Yelp
Awesome views and scenery, great decor, fantastic wine list, great location, awesome food. Their caprese salad and the prosciutto wrapped dates are great. Their flatbreads are great too. Service can improve and make this a 5 star place. Bring water and utensils. Clean the tables before seating guests. Bring salads before the main courses. Just focus on basics any restaurant should do and this place would be great.
google avatar

Yelp
It was my boyfriend and I'd first time coming to We Olive after hearing great things about it from a friend. We both got a Cabernet that had a medium sweetness and light bodied taste making it smooth and enjoyable to drink. We also ordered the dip duo plate. The dip duo came with a hummus dip and a cheese dip. I wish I could get a jar of just the cheese dip. It was that good. The server was attentive and checked up on throughout our visit. This place didn't have too many options for meals. Definitely a place I will be recommending to my friends to grab a drink with a beautiful view.

Mariana S.

Yelp
My go-to spot for date night--I'm here almost every week! There's never a wait, always a cozy spot to relax, and the wine, views, and vibes are unbeatable. Love love love this place!
google avatar

Emily T.

Yelp
Great spot with ocean views. There are only a handful of seats inside and out, so it may be hard to get a table outside on a busier day. I ordered the chardonnay, and it was nice and buttery. Just how I like it. I wish they had a few more chardonnay options (it was the only one), but they had lots of other red and white wines to choose from.
google avatar

Amanda A.

Yelp
Everything was exceptionally delicious! Highly recommend the honey buratta pizza. I am gluten free, & they had gf pita bread, so I was able to enjoy. I will definitely be making a trip back to enjoy this intimate spot once again!
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
This is my new favorite place! The outdoor patio is so cute at sunset and they have heaters for when it's chilly at night. The patio is two levels and has a lot of seating. They also have a few tables inside. Their wine and beer selection is great and their food is delicious! You have to try their fresh warm bread with dipping oil! Our waitress was so nice and attentive and recommended some great wine and food.
google avatar

Ron U.

Yelp
Nice place to try out new wines you might be curious about. I tried the Amador Hills Zin. It's very good on an overcast chilly day. Will definitely return!
google avatar

S C.

Yelp
Great place for snacks and drinks! Their bread that comes with the burrata bowl was soooo good!! Flatbread and salad were also good. Service was great and we sat outside with nice views of the sunset!
google avatar

Dennis G.

Yelp
Great view of the ocean down below, at least where we sat. The wine suggestion was perfect and paired well with the Artisan Cheese board. Service was great. A nice relaxing way to spend an hour or so. There is also a small shop in the front with their locally sourced wine, cheese, and more.

Hana L.

Yelp
10/10. Absolutely amazing views + service. I had the place bookmarked on Yelp for a couple months and finally decided to check it out with a friend. Thank you so much for a wonderful start to a weekday night. It's quite unassuming but it's on the same strip of the Hagen Daaz in La Jolla. We were greeted promptly when walking in. Hostess/Cashier was super friendly and checked our IDs before letting us in the back where the tables were. The views are amazing. We were given menus for wine and charcuterie. The wine was surprisingly affordable given the amount. I felt like it was adequately portioned. My orange wine glass was $15. Wine came out promptly. We were seated somewhat near the back, but luckily more seats opened closer to the view as people left. The views are absolutely beautiful. It's quiet and romantic. I would highly highly recommend coming here for a nice chat and/or recap. They close at 9 p.m. I would come early next time to grab seats right in the front.
google avatar

Chrislyn B.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, nice view, and the charcuterie was great. Perfect place to recharge after an afternoon of hiking Torrey Pines.
google avatar

Morgan R.

Yelp
We love coming here!! A hidden gem. Delicious wine with a great view. Only downside is everything is more expensive, but to be expected in La Jolla with this view!
google avatar

Renee L.

Yelp
This place was a perfect find. Our first time to La Jolla and we had spent the day roaming around for a breezy spot to drop our stuff and enjoy the view. We stumbled on this spot to grab a bite to eat. Unexpected gem to have a bite to eat and enjoy some refreshing drinks and a view. I had a peach basil mimosas and it was delicious, along with a caprice chicken panini and salad. The service was quick and friendly. I would highly recommend this spot. I also picked up some goodies to bring home from our trip.
google avatar

Jack M.

Yelp
The worker would not let me do a tasting but my group could , the workers are not help takes forever HORRIBLE SERVICE.

Rhonda S.

Yelp
Will start by saying love the product and have used for years and introduced to friends, great quality product. Customer Service is Appalling!!! Hoping first time was a fluke. After walking in, 3 employees saw us and not 1 acknowledgement from any of them. After 15 minutes, asked if I could purchase a bottle and she said it would be awhile and she left. We walked out, this time same thing but waited 30 minutes, nothing! Hope the owners are aware and losing customers due to out right rudeness!!
google avatar

Steven E.

Yelp
Great view, you feel hidden in back , if you can get back there, the olive oil , wine and parings are yummy
google avatar

Glynnis K.

Yelp
The bread and olive oil are the tastiest things I've ever tasted. The salt in the crisp edges of the rustic bread explodes in your mouth. The wine is all top shelf and delicious. The best part besides the amazing food and drinks is the view. Grab a date for a romantic evening taking in the La Jolla coast while getting tipsy, or bring your favorite friends for a fun experience. I highly recommend this well kept secret gem in La Jolla.
google avatar

Sedona M.

Yelp
The new strawberry fields salad is SO GOOD! It is very refreshing and tasty, thank you jasmine! Quick service and the best view!!
google avatar

Nateron M.

Yelp
We came here on a Tuesday afternoon on a whim and it did not disappoint! We got a seat looking out at the ocean and it couldn't have been better weather for a couple glasses of wine and some tapas. Along with the really nice wine and food, the service and atmosphere was great too. We had walked by the place a couple times and we are so glad we stopped in. If you're looking for a relaxing space with a nice view and good wine - do yourself a favor and stop in here.
google avatar

Tom S.

Yelp
Quaint. There is no way to describe this little gem of a wine, bar and olive oil shop. You feel like you are in Carmel, California with the warm tones, the ocean view, great wine choices, and light appetizers. The service was excellent, friendly and responsive. We will definitely be coming back.
google avatar

Mana W.

Yelp
Yummy dishes and great ocean views!!! Had the Caesar salad and enjoyed my time with a big group!!!
google avatar

Dee D.

Yelp
We had a great time here today. After a day visiting several beaches we decided to stop in La Jolla for a refreshment. What a novel idea -- an olive shop with wine and small plates in the rear. The view was fabulous. We met a small group of people there and chatted for hours while we munched and sipped our selections. The salad and the olives were quite tasty as well as the "refreshments." The staff was friendly and accommodating. They provided a complimentary plate of flavored olive oils and vinegars. We enjoyed a lovely afternoon here.
google avatar

Courtney O.

Yelp
You know I love a good hidden gem! On a busy Saturday night in La Jolla, we were hoping to grab a drink before our 7:30 dinner reservations. Cue We Olive and Wine Bar! We entered and were greeted by their friendly staff. The front of the store is an olive oil bar with different barrel olive oils and balsamic vinegars. They had a lot of different and interesting blends that you could taste before purchasing by the bottle. Their dining section is roped off. After checking our IDs, we were escorted to the back patio. They have a beautiful outdoor area with views of the ocean! We each ordered a glass of wine. Love their selection included many Paso reds. Besides wine, they also have beer as well as different appetizers and food. This is definitely a place we'd like to revisit! Great service and such a fun little hideaway in what can typically be a very busy and crowded area.
google avatar

Sandra S.

Yelp
This is a beautiful wine bar and gourmet shop filled with delicious food products olive oils and spices and home gifts. The setting is amazing and we sat on a patio looking over the ocean. A beautiful day in La Jolla. The offerings are delicious and staff were very friendly and welcoming. I highly recommend making a reservation and enjoying this delightful business. I would like to mention that the owner takes pride in her wonderful small business and cares about her guests. We will definitely find time to visit again.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick glass of wine. The wine was excellent and it was a nice place with a small view of the ocean. Friendly staff. I will come here again

Yelp
Found this amazing little place while in San Diego. Their food is moderately priced and tastes amazing, you can tell that they use fresh ingredients. They also have an amazing variety of oils and balsamic vinegar that you get to try. Service was fast and friendly. The view is also really nice, you can see the sunset on the beach from the restaurant and it's just a really cute place. Would definitely come back
