This iconic Athens institution has stood the test of time, and from the slightly chaotic ordering system to the amazingly delicious, traditional southern cooking, everything about this place is an experience. Hurry, and get some of this in you before Dexter decides to retire. Clock's ticking!

Amazing people! So kind and patient when ordering. The lemonade and tea were amazing! Enjoyed the sweet potatoes and squash casserole were delicious. The chicken came out piping hot. It and the steak lack a little flavor to me and the mac and cheese was okay. The prices were very reasonable. There was a steady stream of regulars coming through as well.

Delicious soul food. Great place but they assume everyone has been there before. You select your meat, pay for your meal, grab a cup and select either lemonade. Water or semi sweet tea, then move to the window on your left and tell them what you meat you ordered and select your sides. Seating is family style. Just sit down with whomever and where ever. Food was delicious.

Our food was so good we had to get 3 plates to go! Steak and gravy was 🤤 Red velvet 10/10 I wish they had the broccoli casserole today but hey it is what it is! We'll be back! Thanks Dexter it's Automatic‼️

We were visiting Athens and decided to google restaurants. When I saw the green building and pulled up on the premises it took me back to southern church days. Church anniversary days to be specific at the little old church built with center blocks. The aroma of the fried chicken and collard green drew me in!!!! I just knew we would not be disappointed. Our food was hot and fresh! The restaurant score card: 99A. This made for a perfect experience. Great to meet the owner and his staff; Mr. Weaver D., Dorothy, and Dominique. They were awesome! True soul food is a rarity these days, but Weaver D- Got It Right! 💯

Weaver’s D is an Athens staple restaurant since 1986 but closing in 2026. “Automatic for the people” is the business even decorated R.E.M posters and local artists paintings. As a returning native, this was my 1st time experience. Mr. Dexter’s Sweet potato soufflé is BEST!!! Gobble up it all so no pictures from 12/9/25 😋. Go and experience 40 years of history but his nephew/ Cedar Shoals 2002 classmate/ Atlanta based realtor Trey Cooper sell this riverfront property

Weaver D’s is my all-time favorite soul food restaurant! Best fried chicken in the world! And so many delicious sides to pair, including my also all-time favorite homemade old-fashioned cake. Highly recommend! 💪🏾

I'm a local been going for years and the food has never disappointed me. Fried chicken is chef's kiss!! Every dish is deliciously good. Gotta have some of that delicious cake to go along with it.

Mac and Cheese was outstanding. Chicken is good. We stop by whenever we are in town.

Best fried chicken in the entire world! The veggies are pretty amazing too. If you can make Dexter smile you get extra credit! I will always stop here when I'm in Athens! Go Dawgs!

I was in town on business and was highly recommend this place for some soul food. The parking lot is small but street parking is always readily available. This is definitely a hole in the wall spot. Dining area is super small so you definitely need to catch them on a non busy time. I ordered the 3 piece fried chicken and my 2 sides were green beans and Mac and cheese. I got to say, the fried chicken was the best I have ever had in my life. The skin was crispy. The flavoring and seasoning was perfect on the inside. The the temperature of the chicken was sooo hot that it was amazing. The green beans and Mac and cheese was awesome as well. I had sweet tea and lemonade mixed and was just amazing! It was definitely a great home cooked meal! I highly recommend this place if your looking for some delicious fried chicken. I can't wait to come back again!

It was a little busy being a UGA football game day, but they were not fazed. Food was excellent and served promptly.

Weaver D's reportedly offers great food, especially fried chicken. People rave about it on Yelp. Based on the rave reviews, I Ubered there from downtown Athens on a Saturday at about 1:00 p.m. only to find it closed despite the published business hours stating Weaver D's is open all day on Saturdays. What a disappointment. It was a complete waste of my time and my money (Ubering there and back). My best advice is to call ahead when you want to go to find out whether it's actually open or not - assuming they answer the phone when they're open. I'll give it another try when I'm in Athens again next year and update my review accordingly. For now, one star it is.

Weaver D's never disappoints. Back in town for a visit and you bet I made a point of stopping by. A great pace I could even take my vegetarian friends.

Great food. The Weaver D was there and made sure everything was great. Iconic Athens landmark worth the trip for the REM connection alone, but the food and service is the reason that we will return.

The food was really good. We got the baked chicken & the fried chicken. The sweet potato soufflé was good and so was the squash. I loved the seating outside.

Always looking for great fried chicken. Well this one didn't disappoint. It's a mom and pop shop that seems to be strictly local. Only the owner and his wife were working. Very friendly but not the fastest but moved as fast as they could. You order at the register and then stand in line to get your food. Bring cash or there is a service charge. I got the 2 piece mixed chicken lunch with 2 sides and a drink (lemonade or sweet tea). The sides I chose were buttered potatoes and Mac & cheese. Everything was homemade you could tell. Reminded me of my grandma cooking at her house. Not much room for seating inside and it was very cluttered and messy with everything sitting around. Quite a shock walking if especially if you are expecting a nice sit down place to eat. Definitely get it to go. Aside from the interior the food was excellent. I give the food a 5 but gave a 4 overall. Food excellent although a limited menu. All else well... you can make the decision.

I was taking a walk along the greenway for the first time and just looking for a place to buy a drink. Never heard of Weaver D's before, but I was expecting it to be some hole-in-the-wall classy restaurant with the sign out front that says "delicious fine foods". Then on closer inspection, found out it was it was "soul food". I wasn't hungry, but with all the great reviews here, thought I'd give it a try. It was really crowded when I arrived at 12:30 on a Friday afternoon. There are two lines inside, the one on the right to order the food and the one on the left to pick it up. There is no indoor dining, but there are a lot of tables outside, esp next to the river. I ordered the steak and gravy with collard greens and broccoli casserole. Food was OK, but they sure did not hold back on the serving portions. Drinks are in a giant cup as well. Love the down-home atmosphere inside. Others would open the door as people left with an armful of food. I also chatted with a nice old black lady around 90 years old. When you pick up the food, they have no idea what you ordered, so you have to tell them what you ordered. Next time walking the greenway, stop by for a huge lunch and have a relaxing time eating next to the river.

Not what I was expecting. I certainly don't want to wear out Automatic for the People (or show my age) but being in the place and eating great southern inspired and prepared added to the yumminess. I came in late in the afternoon way past the lunch rush and ordered what Mr. Weaver exclaimed "the last wings in the building". I am so glad I did! The dining area is set up with a long communal table and some smaller tables. The end of the long table-closest to the counter- had several freshly made red velvet cakes on it. The conversation and community of the restaurant was just as rich as those cakes. I ordered my meal- the chicken- and people came and went from the place. Comments on church, the fish, and the weather peppered the air. Most the discussions started like this "WEAVER!..." Again, I was fascinated by even the tiniest of details of the restaurant. The chicken was just about out of the fryer when Mr. Weaver called my back up to the counter. At that point, a sweet woman asked me what sides I wanted and handed me my box. I think this so smart because there wasn't any gum up in writing this down or filling out the details of the order at the cash register. Please don't go in expecting white table clothes and a soft music in the background. You won't get that. You will get more.

An Athens icon. 35 yrs in service. Me ya changes and is called out to you when you walk in front door. "Today I have fried pork chops, bbq chicken, catfish , steak and gravy." The sides are posted on the board and you tell Dorothy what sides you want as she fixes your plate. It's not the best fried pork chop I've had but the chicken is good. We ate inside at long table shared with other diners. Homemade cakes are lining a table.

This place is iconic. The owner Dexter has been operating his restaurant out of this bright green house for decades. The menu is simple and the place is down to earth. Come get your fill of southern home cooking. I stopped by on Monday at lunchtime. The parking lot was empty. Unfortunately they weren't open. Apparently the hours are not always consistent, but there was a sign on the door indicating they would be open the next day. I was able to return Tuesday to give them a try. The steak & gravy was tender and moist. I could easily cut each bite with just a fork. It was served on a bed of rice drowning in the same thin white gravy. It was so tasty that I mixed my squash casserole with it because the squash on its own was bland in comparison. It was the one thing I wouldn't get again mainly because of the stringy texture. The broccoli casserole on the other hand was just fine on its own. The cornbread was not sweet or spicy which would have been my preference; however, I think most people would have liked it just the way it was. While you wait for him or one of the ladies to cook and serve your meal, you can walk around and admire the many R.E.M. paraphernalia on the walls. Did you know the band saw the words "Automatic for the People" on the sign outside, and ended up using the line on the cover art of one of their albums? If you want to learn more, you can buy a CD of Owner Dexter telling the backstory. Weaver D's does a lot of good for the community. He is featured in a 2020 Census poster encouraging people to get counted. He also has a fundraiser going. I overheard the owner talking about serving a turkey dinner tomorrow, so I might return in my stretchy pants to get my Thanksgiving fix. Oh, and this time, I'll probably break down and try one of the amazing desserts he has like the bread pudding. I recommend you give this home grown cook a chance to fill your belly too.

Some of the best food I've had in Athens. I knew right away as soon as I walked in I was going to like it. I got two pieces of some of the best fried chicken I've ever had, one white one dark. The Mac and cheese was great. Cornbread was great. The dressing and gravy though I'm gonna be dreaming about that for the rest of my life. Can't wait to come back here in a couple days

Great food, service and ambiance. Felt like I was eating right from my god mother. Greens and Mac were great and I usually hate lemonade at soul food spots but this lemonade was amazing!!!!

First impressions do mean a lot! Weaver D! Why so rude? I was very disappointed with your service. I watched you greet all the other customers yet you treated me like a bum. Every encounter with each customer is important! Well, not sure how the people or the health department would feel about your friendly co-workers. I deserve the same respect. I would not recommend .

I hate leaving bad reviews but I didn't have a great experience with this place today. The food was really good but the service wasn't. I'd much rather to go Food for the Soul on Broad that always has a ton of choices, super nice folks who run the place, and they get you in and out quick. Just a much friendlier, easier experience overall for good southern comfort food. It took about half an hour to get my food after ordering, as my toddler was melting down hungry. Their delay also upset our nap time. I would expect a restauraunt to be ready to serve food when they open as like...a basic part of operating a business. I stopped in to grab takeout for the family about ten minutes after they opened and they weren't even ready to serve the meal at this time. Which wasn't really communicated clearly to anyone in the line. If I had known it would take so long to receive the food, I would have left. Many of the sides weren't ready so the things I wanted to get I couldn't order. I was told quite brusquely to order fast and really didn't feel like there was a welcoming atmosphere. Almost like me being there to buy their food was an imposition on them? I wasn't informed I couldn't order from all of their listed sides until after I paid and was already stuck as well. The dressing was excellent, the Mac n Cheese was also good. Greenbeans were too salty and so was the cornbread. Chicken was good as well. Decent food just not worth the hassle. The above review expresses my personal opinion.

Great food. Great service. Even if you are not an R.E.M. fan on a "pilgrimage", it's worth a visit to have the delicious food. Mr. Weaver is truly making his food Automatic for the People. Don't forget to have the hummingbird cake!

Fried chicken and sweet tea. Best I've had in a very long time. I'm in Athens often but a must stop when I'm there.

Great fried chicken and sides but it was $15 for this plate and a drink. The customer service isn't the greatest but at least the food is good. Locally owned and run so I feel fine with paying way more than I would elsewhere. The tea and lemonade was just the way I liked it

Great food! Friendly atmosphere!! Unless you're really hungry go with the two piece snack it comes with a side. More than enough.

My wife and I were taking a walk from the Holiday Inn down Broad Street toward the river when we passed by a bright green restaurant with "Automatic for the People" on the sign. As children of the 1980s in Athens, GA we both automatically thought "R.E.M."! So, knowing only that we stopped in for lunch. And so glad we did. Weaver D himself takes the orders and cooks the chicken. Well, he half takes your order and half tells you what to get to keep the line moving. Which was fine by me. I got the fried chicken, collards, and mac-n-cheese. My wife got a four vegetable plate. Everything was delicious. The fried chicken some of the best I've had. The whole area around this restaurant is gentrifying, which I would hope means the place is going to be making money hand over fist for years to come. But they are also trying to raise $50,000 to keep the place going, so hopefully the community steps up to support this unique institution.

Automatic indeed. For the people, absolutely. Walking into the bright green building you immediately feel comfortable in Mr. Weaver's homey and welcoming restaurant. It's takes just a moment to realize the menu is posted and you can walk right up and order. They have a variety of protein items, pork chops, fish, steak, but you know you are here for the chicken. I opted for the white meat and was served a breast and thigh which was perfect and a generous portion. Crunchy, with a good garlic, seasoned coating, it's just perfectly done fried chicken. With the meal you get two sides and can choose from and they will ask you at the window when you roll up to grab your plate. You can make pick from broccoli and squash casserole, rice, collards, mac and chee, buttered beans (Lima), string beans, potato salad or peas. Challenging decisions, but I opted for the collards and mac. The collards were perfect, torn into bite size pieces, not over done and flavorful, full of onion and porky goodness. The mac and cheese was also excellent. We could have a whole aside on varieties and expectations for mac and cheese, but this was just my style and most bodacious on flavor. You also get a corn bread roll. A golden brown and delicious roll that is not too sweet - the normal state of cornbread. Pair it with the squeeze parkay and you have a perfect combination. Drinks are from a five gallon pale of lemonade or tea (sweet) of course. The whole thing is delightful and cheap for the price. Recommend you try this place! Automatic for the people!

Not no real black people cooking ! Mac & Cheese was nasty, the cheese was seperated from the mac ! Greens had onions in them but no meat. The greens were not cooked all the way, they were crunchy..?? If you're looking for a good SOUL FOOD place, just keep driving by. I was appalled at how they think this is called soul food.. Lol. Foul Food not Soul Food!

Stopped for lunch on a Saturday to get our veggie fix satisfied. My wife and I both got the four veggie platter with sweet tea. I got dressing with gravy and cranberry sauce, collard greens, broccoli casserole, and green beans. Enjoyed the dressing and green beans. The collards were so-so, and the broccoli didn't have much flavor. My wife had the broccoli casserole, squash casserole, green beans, and mac and cheese. She enjoyed the squash and green beans and thought the other two were ok. Our niece got the fried chicken which was good along with another persons fried catfish. Be warned the kitchen is not well ventilated so you will leave smelling of old grease.

My Sweetie and I had Lunch here today, and WOW was this food amazing. Hot, freshly prepared out of the kitchen, homemade food. I had the porkchops, mac&cheese, dressing with gravy, and my Sweetie had country fried steak and gravy, potatoes and green beans. The food was delish, service was friendly and inviting. A MUST TRY in Athens!

What a great southern food experience. Had the fried chicken, green beans and field peas and it was yummy! My husband had the pork chops and those were also delicious. Both were cooked perfectly and not dried out like some places. The coating on the fried chicken was flavorful light and crispy! We showed up not too long before closing and they were so hospitable in letting us sit and eat in. We've heard about this place because of the REM connection and finally got around to going there. We don't live here full time so it will be a nice treat when we come to town.

Y'all definitely should give this place a try!!! It was about the red velvet cake but my first visit they ran out so got the last piece of key lime cake, which was really good!! Anyways, every thing was delicious!! Second time getting steak and gravy, which was really consistent!

some of the best pork chops you will ever eat. meats normally cooked to order, the wait is worth it. all sides are seasoned perfectly and i've never had a complaint. some of the best lemonade and sweet tea and you're VERY lucky if you get to try the Green Velvet Cake!!!

Five stars on G.P. Dexter Weaver, the legend himself, greeted me at 20 till closing with a friendly "all I have left is catfish, crowder peas and greens. Is that ok for you?" When I said "sure!" He replied with "Automatic". For those of us that r.e.m.ember buying most of R.E.M.'s albums as they were first released, this is somewhat of a hajj, akin to visiting the St. Mary's episcopal church steeple (btw, reconstruction started on that earlier this year on the 35th anniversary of r.e.m.'s first concert there). But I don't want this to be the nerdy band fan's review. Dexter Weaver has an exceptional thing going in Weaver D's and the congenial service along with clearly fresh and delicious foods underscores a well deserved and hard earned reputation. One can have any beverage they wish, provided it's from the 5 gallon container on the counter. It contained pink lemonade today - maybe it's that every day. The decor, expectedly, includes images of the band (after all, they named their most highly acclaimed studio album after Dexter's exclamation "Automatic!"), along with reviews from newspapers near and far. I came for the pork chops - but the catfish didn't disappoint. Let the pictures and videos do the talking. Automatic!

A classic Athens spot that lived up to its reputation. My chicken was perfect with a juicy center and crispy, hot outside. The tea and lemonade mixed for the perfect Arnold Palmer to compliment my meal. The mac was slightly underwhelming as you could tell it had been prepared earlier and was the last of the batch. While the building is small, you can tell it is a historic establishment. I will definitely be returning and sampling the rest of the menu items.

I'm a recovering food slut, and every now and then I have a relapse! THE SCENE I drove out to Athens to have lunch with my oldest son. We were enjoying some delicious Shrimp & Grits at Chops & Hops when he reminded me of Weaver D's. You see, he went to school here @ UGA and several times we made plans to go to Weaver D's for lunch, but something always got in the way. Mostly it was because they didn't seem to keep to the scheduled hours they posted . Often they would be closed during hours they were supposed to be open and for a while they appeared to be closed for business permanently. Already bulging with a full belly, I walked into Weaver D's with the intention of getting something to take home for dinner. I decided on three chicken wings with a side of macaroni & cheese and dressing with gravy. The gentlemen owner was very nice and had a melodious tone to his voice. I didn't ask if he was a singer, but I am certain he has vocal skills just from his tone. He was very proper and polite and didn't hesitate when I asked if I could take a picture with him. It's just my thing, I like taking pics with owners of places like this, particularly when I don't think I will ever have opportunity to come back. Who knows, he may be featured on 'Diners, Drive-in's & Dives' someday. The exterior is an eye catching lime green sure to cause an accident if you focus on it too hard while driving! THE FOOD The interior is simple and almost feels like a backroom break area. All kinds of memorabilia and pics dress the walls along with several happy college students getting their grub on. Prior to leaving, I sampled a taste of each of my food items while they was still hot and fresh and would rate them as follows: * FRIED CHICKEN WINGS - 3 stars Not bad, but I could taste the grease (which probably means they need to change or better filter their cooking oil). * MACARONI & CHEESE - 1 star Not very cheese, more like noodles with a light cheese sauce. * DRESSING w/gravy - 4 stars This was really very good. I wouldn't mind ordering a pan of this next Thanksgiving. I LOVE the fact they put celery in their dressing and also that it was moist and not dry. Very well seasoned. * SWEET TEA - 3 stars The tea tasted a little watery and wasn't very sweet. Big props that they use crushed ice here. FINAL THOUGHTS It's the kind of place you want to do well. Nice folks just trying to make their dreams come true. However, I wish the food was better tasting, especially taking into consideration the price. My meal with an extra side of macaroni & cheese for my son (whom also didn't like it) totaled just over $13. Geeez Louise! I would have been happier with a KFC meal at half the price. 2.75 stars rounded to 3.

do not go here during the pandemic. lines are waist to waist no mask policy constant sneezing, coughing, and sniffling around you at all times most unsafe restaurant in all of athens (maybe even in all of georgia)

An Athens' staple. A damn good one at that. You'll find Mr. Weaver on sight and ready to serve...automatic. Side note: whoever had the audacity to name their pizza business Automatic in this town, has some nerve. Rant over. Weaver Ds is all you can dream of. It's for your soul awesome. Fried chicken, mac n cheese, potato salad, cornbread, red velvet cake and sweet tea. And hell yeah, I ate it all. Did I leave in pain? Yes. Worth it? Hell yes and amen. Just on the edge of downtown, this quaint green house calls to you. What's in there you wonder. Then you smell it. Oh, lort.

Oh my goodness this place is fabulous! Athens biggest secret in my opinion. Fried chicken, cornbread dressing, cranberry sauce and macaroni and cheese which are all homemade. Spouse got the chicken, collards and macaroni and cheese. Chicken was crispy not greasy. No old grease taste. Very good pricing. First place to remind me of my mother's cooking. If you want a good home cooked meal this is the place to go !

So LOVE Weaver D! OMGEEEEE! Hadn't been in for years but felt like home! I called Weaver 30 minutes before and sat and waited for them to open! I just love the food, atmosphere and Weaver D's awesome spirit!

If you want great home made fried chicken gotta give this a place a try. A plate of fried chicken with sides, cornbread, and a drink for only $5. Make sure u go around 12pm for the freshest fried chicken.

Side note... regularly locked up my office and walked the three quarters of a mile to have lunch at Weaver D's... Automatic baby! D's is a hometown southern/soul food dinner in a major university city. A city full of highly trained chefs, big money concepts, and high flow bars & night clubs. Even with all that fancy competition Dexter Weaver's little dinner is one of the most stop by to eat spots in town. The meats on menu are the stars of plates and the sides I rate as ok (always need extra seasoning or a condiment but this ain't a fancy place so I wouldn't expect a Harry met Sally moment on the mac'n'cheese). I do like their boiled yellow squash, collard greens, and the sides with gravy are always pretty good. Getting an "Automatic" from Dexter always puts a smile on my face.

Weaver D's is a simple southern dinner. Weaver himself is a nice outgoing guy who greets you with any icy cup of sweet tea or lemonade. The actual food is different though. Weaver doesnt have every dish on hand and makes them to order. Its nice to have it made right then, but it also can be a little bit of a wait. Later on in the day he runs out of food aswell. I got the whiting fish with a side of green beans and mac and cheese. The fried fish was delicious but the sides that complimented it were not. The green beans were watery and the mac and cheese came out with table pepper already sprinkled on it. The biscuit served with the meal was bland and lifeless. If you want old school southern black cooking this is the place to go. Dont expect anything else.

Weaver D is an icon. The food is delicious and the service is exact. You get what you came for, great down home cooking. A small place but always busy serving up only the best. I come here from Los Angeles every couple of years and always make a point the eat here. The cook book is also a treat.

All food experiences are subjective, but Weaver D's is downright authentic and delicious. The food is the most authentic southern soul food experience I've had in Athens to date. I had the fried chicken (dark meat) with sides of green beans, mac n cheese, and a roll. The chicken was juicy and delicious and the sides were to die for. The food was simple yet special. My date had collard greens that I tried and were also very good. We shared some apple cobbler to end our meal and it was to die for The decor is a little odd and the owner, Dexter is quite eccentric. If it is nice outside, I recommend getting your food to go and eating on the park tables just outside the restaurant along the river. I'll be back soon!

Been to Athens multiple times, this was our second time here. You order your meat/entree with the cook and move down to the cashier for you sides. Very efficient and nice people. The first time my man got an "Automatic" for the people. Very memorable. I got the country fried steak, which I normally do not like...It was great. My got the chicken, awesome. On this second trip we friends in time for the annual concert at the 40 Watt. I got the smothered (with gravy) chicken with greens and mach and cheese. Again I usually do not dig on dark meat but again it was awesome. My got the chicken again with green beans and potatoes, he loved it. We will definitely be back the next time we come back to Athens.

Automatic for the people, indeed. I'm at a loss for words. What to say about a perfect restaurant? This place is everything it should be; nothing good can be added to it except at the expense of something else. It's perfect. God bless this fine place. Thank you, Dexter Weaver, for your delicious fine foods. I tried Wilson's, and even went to Peaches. Neither came close. Try the fried chicken. Try the barbecue. Try the greens. Try the cornbread. Try the mashed potatoes. Don't worry about dessert--you won't need it, because the sweet potatoes are that sweet. They're loaded with marshmallows, nutmeg, pecans, and cinnamon. Wash it down with some (very) sweet tea or lemonade. There's chow chow for your greens and hot sauce for everything else. God have mercy... I so desperately miss real southern cooking--the bowdlerized, greasy fare that passes for soul food out here just doesn't cut it (Sandra Dee comes the closest, though). Sitting out on Weaver's rickety bench overlooking the Oconee River, roasting in the thick, fat, sweaty southern air, talking Georgia football with weird old guys--I'm getting emotional just thinking about it. The south is so much better when you don't live there...

After four years in Athens, I decided I had to try Weaver D's at least once before I left. With all the years of anticipation, perhaps I should've been on alert for a bit of a letdown, but I ended up disappointed with the Weaver D's experience. Waited in line for awhile, then waited even longer for the food. The interior was cramped and poorly laid out for the long lines that formed at the lunch rush. Service was okay, but nothing special (note: you have to wait in line for the food yourself after you order). I get that this is part of the restaurant's ambiance, but it's hard to get enough room for people to sit down to eat, stand in line, and get up to get refills, etc. under the current setup. The best adjective to describe the food was bland. I got a meatloaf special with a few sides and lemonade and really nothing was anywhere above average. The meatloaf was oddly bland and the sides of mac and cheese and fried okra were just okay; I've had better at other places. I did appreciate the random slice of watermelon, but it was sadly just like the rest of the food: average. Lemonade tasted like lemon-flavored kool-aid; Chick-Fil-A has better. I seriously tried to find things to like about Weaver D's, but it ended up being one of the more disappointing culinary excursions that I had in Athens.

Wow....14 years later...I finally tried Weaver D's. Maybe I wasn't being adventuress enough, or maybe I didn't notice their unassuming location, or maybe I didn't understand where 1 of my favorite 90's albums namesake came from...but finally...I've tried Weaver D's. We decided to change up our game day routine this year and try a different restaurant. So, we got there a little bit later in the afternoon (~2pm) and already kind of had in mind what to order. I went with the Fried Chicken (white meat), mac n' cheese, and the squash souflee. The meal also included a cornbread muffin and a drink for about $9.50. There's also a $0.25 upcharge if you pay with a credit card - FYI. Dexter Weaver was running the register himself and it was pretty slow inside. Probably because it was game day and also it was kind of in between lunch and dinner. From there, you walk a few short steps towards the kitchen (which is all open - as in you can see the stove top) and another employee will serve you up your food. The chicken must have been cooked right on the spot, but the sides were scooped out of some rather large tin foil-esque platters. I actually asked for the broccoli souflee, but she must not have understood or something and she gave me the squash souflee. No matter, I'm sure they were similar. So...this is Southern Soul Food, so don't come here if you're health conscious. There will be heaps of salt, butter, and cheese on most anything you eat there so just be warned. As other reviewers commented, if you get there late, then the sides really aren't very fresh. They're warm, but certainly not hot. So, if you do decide to check this place out, be sure to go before 12 noon in order to truly enjoy what they're making. The fried chicken was flavorful and 1 of the 2 pieces had a fair amount of meat on it. The 2nd piece was about half the size and didn't have much meat on it. It was flavored well and tasted fresher than the sides. Again, I'm the kind of person that really prefers HOT food, so the sides were a bit on the disappointing side. The mac n' cheese was pretty decent, but not the best I've had by any means. The mac is made with...you guessed it macaroni. It reminded me of a friend's homemade mac n' cheese. Now, I did enjoy the squash souflee. It was creamy, buttery, cheesy, with just a smattering of squash in there. All in all a good choice for a side. The bathroom is in sad shape. No where to dry your hands and you literally have to walk between the kitchen and where the register is to get there. I felt like I was walking through someone's house. I did briefly talk with Mr. Weaver and he didn't come across as brash and when I put a couple of bucks in the tip jar, he said, "Automatic". That in itself bumped this up to 4 stars from 3. I may not go back anytime soon (as I really only make it up to Athens about once a year now), but I'm glad I finally made it through the doors :)
