Immigrant Restaurant Workers React to Trump’s Deportation Threats | Eater

"The Carrboro, North Carolina market where Martinez and Anders first met working as bread bakers—Martinez for about 20 years and Anders for about eight—which provided their early training and bakery experience before they relocated to New York. Their long tenure there is part of the couple’s professional foundation and is referenced in their decision-making around moving to a place they felt would be safer while addressing immigration paperwork." - Jaya Saxena

Delightful local high quality grocery store (co-op). Basically this is where you’re going to want to come if you’re not in the mood for Whole Foods over in chapel hill. From produce to cheese to baked goods to the fresh bar, premade sushi… drinks… they’ve got it all. The local wine and beer section is especially large and well sourced. I tried to capture a great variety of the inside of the store in my photos without being too obnoxious. As usual. Would easily recommend anything from the bakery or fresh bars.

Google
Big, bright and loaded with a wide variety of food, plants and groceries. Great large outdoor seating to enjoy a meal❣️

Google
Absolutely, love Weaver Street Market! They support local, small businesses by carrying our products and providing the knowledge needed to enter this sector of the food industry. Everyone on staff does a phenomenal job and cares about what they do! Thanks so much, WSM!

Marie D. McCohnell

Google
Normally, I just go to the co-opt grocery store there to get the organic dry goods and some raw nuts for the wild birds and squirrels! They carry a “hard to find” organic whipped cream brand that I like for my coffee too! The store has a nice selection of healthy supplements as well! I have not tied their full line of food choices but I am sure they are equally nice! Outside in the court yard lots of people gather with their friends and family! I would say, it is the old fashioned energy of community that is the most appealing!

Alois Callemyn

Google
This store does a great job meeting the needs of its unique customer base. It does not try to compete with the other brand name stores. The prices are higher, but it offers a higher selection of food options.

Google
Loved it. Cross between Trader Joe's and Whole foods. Smaller Size to fit the smaller town, but a great find!

Google
I love coming on sundays to jave breakfast, They have Concha! Mexican sweet bread amazing. although chocolate Concha shouldn't have chocolate chips! too sweet 😂 and not original. But Great place

Darcy frields

Google
The best hot food bar! The best chai from their coffee bar! Nice atmosphere and nice staff. Very community friendly!

Yelp
This location is fantastic! They have a wide selection of produce, meats, cheeses, wines, and coffees. Plus, inside is also a salad and hot food bar and a coffee shop. Always has friendly cashiers (and plenty of them too). People usually come and grab a bite to eat, then sit outside.

Yelp
This store is awesome with a great selection of products. The missing stars are due to the older woman at the register who chased me down and told me I had to leave because of my dog. I calmly explained he is a trained, certified psychological service animal. Instead of stopping there, she argued that he wasn't a service animal because "service animals walk." That is incorrect according to the ADA--service animals are not limited to guide dogs, and being carried does not disqualify them. Please focus on good customer service rather than making assumptions or offering personal opinions about customers' disabilities. If this is a co-op of owners I think you all should know about how I was treated-incredibly rude!

Yelp
Always a comfortable place to stop for a coffee and snack and find great food. Unusual items . Guac and deli items are handy and excellent.

Yelp
Great co-op market with so many prepared (in house) foods. From baked goods to bread to meals, hot food bar and salad bar. Great selection of bulk, cheese, produce. Like a local Whole Foods but raise the bar a little.

Yelp
Never did I believe I would find markets like I enjoyed "up north", "back home" until I walked into Weaver Street Market. The lighting, cleanliness without the chemical smell, fresh produce, homestead feel, complete personal items, unique gifts, baked goods, attention to freshness at the buffet and deli makes this a delight to shop. The vibe of the people working there, the indoor and outdoor setting notwithstanding inspires healthy living and creativity.

Yelp
Had a blueberry muffin and inari tofu sushi today- both great Everyone there is always friendly Good air conditioning on the hot days

Yelp
We googled bakery and this came up! Go the extra mile.....go somewhere else. The bagels are hard, not fresh. The chai tea is unlike anywhere else and not in a good way. The cookies and pastries were not fresh.

Yelp
Walked across the street to the ATM and they towed my car. I won't shop here again. They told me that i should have driven my car across the street to the ATM instead of leaving my car there. It cost $300 to get my car back. Cash only of course. Never again. (They literally have a tow truck on standby waiting to tow people)

Yelp
I have visited this store several times, but have purchased very little. I love the idea of "buying local" and the whole co-op concept, but the prices are just too much for me. With the produce coming in from local farmers, there should be a huge decrease in shipping costs, so why the high prices? The store has always been clean and well kept and the employees I have talked to have been fine. The store isles are not as big as the major chains, so if someone has a cart, be careful. They have bulk foods, which some stores do not have, which is a plus. This does include spices...you can buy just what you need. The baked goods looked awesome, but I resisted. A nice alternative to a place like Fresh Market or Whole Foods, both of which are pricey...but there is better quality stuff here, especially in the produce section. I wish them well.

Joseph W.

Yelp
WOW absolutely excellent everything..I highly recommend to anyone in the area. Fairly priced and relaxed atmosphere.

Nicole W.

Yelp
My name is Nicole. Most people know me from the downtown community. I visit the Raleigh Weaver Street Market almost daily. I have had issues for some time with the employees there, even manager Micki. They have a sign out front that is supposed to make people feel welcome. It states that they don't discriminate, but that is a lie. Every visit that I make to the store, I am being sexually harassed by an employee to employee or employee to customer in the store. It is the Warehouse District issue. I even think some customers follow me there to try to antagonize me. So many comments regarding my body parts and my personal life, using vulgar, explicit language to include rape, etc., had overtly flown around the store when I am present, several times when managers are right there on the floor. SO, one day I confronted Micki who lied and stated she heard nothing, (because she was involved herself) and when I asked her how she could lie to my face and asked how she would feel if people talked about her homosexual orientation, she had the audacity to get an attitude and told me "not to dare go there." She didn't want to empathize. And I still have issues with her to this day, even this morning. I, also, have issues with Deshalla, the slim brown skinned kid and now the dark, heavy set kid. I have reported this to Ruffin Slater numerous time over the contact form. I have seen people there to watch behavior a couple of times, but obviously whatever was said/done was not along the lines of stop this behavior or else. They don't seem to be resentful or worried as the rest of would be if we had been spoken to about these things on our jobs. I have visited the store in Carborro and have NEVER received this treatment. They were very kind and courteous. This is an issue with the Raleigh store. They asked why I continue to come there if I feel unwelcomed, as if this is my issue and I am there to serve them. Plain and simple, it is the one store in the downtown area with quick and easy access, earlier in the day, that has access to a microwave and free wifi. But this matters not, because I should be able to visit there and not be bothered or harassed. And calling me "pretty," now, does not minimize the disrespect and genuine intention of emotional harm of the first comments, which I am sure is a reason they try to intimidate me. I am not here for your assessment or entertainment. Multiple of the staff here are rude and disrespectful, even in their own personal conversations.

Yelp
I went grocery shopping at Weaver Street. It was pretty good. The cashier was nice. There was line in the bathroom so it's not a perfect 5 stars; plus I was in a rush so... I really give it 3.5 stars Thanks

Yelp
I came here with a friend to grab a quick lunch, and I got curry tofu scramble, broccolini, brussels sprouts, foccaccia, chocolate cookie, and an orange pineapple juice. The curry tofu scramble was quite delicious, much better than I thought it'd be as the flavor was quite strong! The broccolini and brussels sprouts were quite oily though, which wasn't great. Foccaccia was fresh as was the cookie but the latter was a bit hard, and the orange pineapple juice was fine. Not too pricey, good and filling for a lunch! There's some outdoor seating which is great, and there's a parking lot right across which is convenient!

Yelp
I have been coming here since 1999, when I was a college student at the university near by. The "Weave" as locals called it has gone through some changes, but retains the local co-op feel. It's strange coming here now almost 20 years later with my daughter. My daughter loves the variety of food, the outdoor seating areas, and of course the nice trees to climb.
google avatar

Smythe R.

Yelp
Think of a non-corporate Whole Foods and take away the indoor seating. Carrboro is a bit on the hippie side anyway, and this place swings easily into that vibe. Came to a meetup and god excellent Eastern NC BBQ and some amazing 3-cheese Mac and Cheese. A $3.50 IPA from Lagunitas and I'm ready to face the humidity and bugs on the patio. Really nice trees, eclectic mix of singles, families with kids of all ages, and dating hipsters. Runners stopping for a post run protein shake. Coders on laptops. The breeze helps with the bugs and the humidity, but it's still 10 feet from the main road, and traffic never stops.

Yelp
A great community market with upscale foodie-type offerings (organic, etc.), a great salad-bar and hot-bar, and a place to socialize with members of the community. On a typical day, when it's reasonably warm, all kinds of people will get food for lunch from the salad-bar or hot-bar, then eat outside at the tables under the trees - a wonderful way to see neighbors, friends and others. Weaver Street Market is the focal point business for Carrboro.

Christine A.

Yelp
It's over 90 degrees and unlike your Hillsborough location there do not appear any available dog bowls outside save for one. When I went to customer service to inquire after a bowl; I was told that this was not something you provide. Really? With at least 5 dogs here and the temps high, it would be great for you all to mimic the hospitality of your Hillsborough location

Yelp
Wonderful hot bar! Very affordable place to take kids or people with multiple food allergies (soy, dairy, nuts, avocado). I love their selection of kombucha as well! Best bread in town - I love their focaccia! They even have delicious inari! Possibly one of my top favorite places for inari (fried tofu skin marinated in delicious sweet and savory soy sauce stuffed with rice) in the triangle! My only wish is they make more of it! It tends to be sold out by the time its 5:00 PM!

Yelp
I used to go to Weaver Street to buy a bagel, toast it and relax eating in the store's dining area. A lot of people enjoyed doing that. Dining establishments reopened more than a year ago. The paranoia about Covid transmission via food and inanimate objects was proven false in 2020. Vaccinations have been available for more than a year. Many people blindly cling to masking although new variants of Covid aren't prevented by masks or vaccine. And Covid symptoms from new variants are light. But the woke enlightened management know better. Keep seating closed. Prepackage bakery items. Want a single bagel? Forget it! Sorry - I know better. I go elsewhere. Permanently.

Yelp
This place makes me want to move back to NC! Ok, not really, but if I did, I'd make sure to live in Chapel Hill/Carrboro so I could shop at WSM! I wandered in to pick up some road snacks and found much more! Awesome plants, teas, a TDF hot bar (if only I hadn't just eaten!), and friendly staff. This was like Whole Foods minus the crazy prices and corporate feel. It's a co-op, but you don't need to be a member to shop here. Loved the shaded outdoor seating.
google avatar

Lucy O.

Yelp
Price may be little higher than other big chain grocery store, but their selection is different. You will be able to find a lot of local food including beer.
google avatar

Darvan C.

Yelp
Years into our relationship, I've fallen hard out of love with Weaver St. The hot bar is just warm, and currently there are more empty tubs than food--and the food almost never changes anymore. It's a sad sight. The indoor eating area has the ambiance of a bus depot. I love a good bus depot, but that usually means I'm getting out of dodge. The grocery has gone downhill too, especially the meats. Their brand of chicken is inedible and really poor quality--and it's in styrofoam! They should know better. The thing is that you'll still run into friends. That's the thing about Weaver St. is that everybody goes there. You'll see folks you know, friends. Friends you make plans with while you wait in line, that awful and barely warm food in hand. I don't know. Why can't the store live up to that? They should. They ought to know.
google avatar

Briana H.

Yelp
I have to concur with other reviewers that the check-out staff are inexplicably rude and scowling every time I have shopped here. I was also disappointed that the patio, which basically serves as Carrboro's town center, was completely closed for over 14 months despite every other business in town allowing and even encouraging outdoor seating. While I support their co-op model, the staff do not seem happy to be there and management does not seem concerned about closing down one of Carrboro's few "public" places. It's one of the few stores that sell good cheese but that's the only reason I go there these days.

Yelp
I love the vibe at the Weaver Street Market. It's definitely friendly and open and there is a lovely place to sit outside amongst benches and picnic tables. It looks like the perfect place to meet friends for a relaxed coffee or lunch. There is a parking lot here with confusing signs that seem to say you shouldn't enter (one way the other way) but once you get the hang of it, it's not too bad. I was here scoping out the vegan options. Weaver prepares a few things in that category: fresh baked slices of vegan apple streusal pie, slices of vegan chocolate cake, tofu summer rolls. I wish they had a few more options, but I'd be willing to give their hot bar vegan options a try next time I visit. I did try the vegan apple streusal pie, I warmed it up at home and it was very, very good. In the dairy fridge area, there is an okay assortment of vegan options. They don't stock the latest and greatest stuff (there is *no* Field Roast Chao Cheese... yet?). Weaver does have the typical vegan fare like Daiya and faux sausage, and it looks to be a little less pricey than Whole Foods. I loved the dry goods bulk and spice section. I picked up some nutritional yeast, a bit of turmeric, and some organic hulled millet for a very good price. If I drank coffee regularly, this would be my go-to spot. The coffee here smells amazing.

Yelp
Perfect place to grab groceries in downtown Carrboro! An amazing selection of healthy and organic foods. Tons of vegan options as well and plant-based foods. They have a breakfast and lunch/dinner how far along with ready to go foods which makes it super easy to pop in and get a meal. They also have a huge beautiful outdoor seating area perfect for you to enjoy your meal, grab a local beer and hangout with some friends, or even do some work on your laptop on a gorgeous sunny day! Extremely fair and reasonable prices, you absolutely can't go wrong with this place. Every time I come to Chapel Hill I go here for everything I need for my stay.

Yelp
Too expensive. can't afford. had a hard time. don't reccomend. please and thanks. d.. good fruits too expensive. thanks.

Ashleigh S.

Yelp
Please always keep Queen's Jollof Sauce on shelves! I could take a bath in that stuff. We were lucky enough to meet the queen herself as she handed out samples and we were hooked. She's great and her food is just as wonderful!
google avatar

Yelp
Weaver Street, an institution in Carrboro, got some "upgrades" and changes, in the form of concrete and "artificial but natural" turf, plus new iron tables, but overall the changes didn't hurt the place too much.

Paul B.

Yelp
Our daughter lives in Chapel Hill. She has Covid. She ordered from the Chapel Hill store. She got an email that said her order was ready. We drove from Cary to the Chapel Hill store to pick up the order for our daughter. There was plenty of parking available - and the two curbside slots were open. We pulled in and called the number. We told the lady what order we were there for - and she told us we were early and asked us, in the future, to not come until the allotted time. I'm thinking "OK, we're early, the order is ready, there's nobody else here. Why are we getting scolded for picking up an order - that's ready and paid for?". Would I order from them? NO. They weren't busy (while we waited, one customer went in the store and one came out), the order was ready - and paid for, and there was plenty of parking. But we got hassled by the young lady none-the-less. Why?

Yelp
Weaver Street is a really great Co-op right in the middle of town. They had a nice selection of my local essentials, which for me seems to mean: beer, kombucha, cheese, chocolate. They also had a beer sampling going on Sunday afternoon. Outdoors they had picnic tables and a nice open field where everyone in town seemed to be playing. Lots of footballs being tossed and children running around. I'm not sure that I could do all of my grocery shopping here because they lack a little bit of variety, but it's definitely a store that's fun to poke around.
google avatar

Robbie C.

Yelp
There is a gathering spot in front of this co op grocery store that caught my eye while passing through. We parked and decided to check it out. Vegan friendly, it is very much like a Whole Foods type of place. Couldn't resist getting a veggie soup to go at the soup and salad bar. Lots of good looking pastries as well. Very friendly service and lots of outdoor tables filled with locals. There are several shops and eateries within walking distance.
google avatar

Sarah G.

Yelp
What a great market. Everything about this place is pleasant, from the ample outdoor seating to the hot bar and amazing pre-made food. Prices are similar to Whole Foods, but there's something more wholesome about this spot. It's certainly more local-focused than your other boutique grocers, and the staff is incredibly warm. Highly recommend the house guac sold on site (it's perfect). Can't wait to come back to gnosh on more!
google avatar

Vic T.

Yelp
It's a co-op, so customers own the company. They know everything about supplements and natural soaps etc. Hot bar is small but has good dishes, try their honey apricot chicken at lunch. Everyone is friendly and remember's my preferences.
google avatar

Yelp
I wish every city could have a Weaver Street Market. It is on the top of my list of favorite places in Chapel Hill (even though it is in Carrboro). It is a great gathering place for the community (and WSM facilitates hundreds of events each year), they have great food, and they embody all the progressive qualities you would imagine a co-op in a college town would have. I highly recommend buying a share and joining the co-op; it costs nothing in the end since you can get a full refund at any time for any reason. Your money spent at WSM is much more likely to stay in the community because WSM makes a concentrated effort to use local suppliers. The wifi makes it a great place for studying, and the large space makes it a great place to catch up with friends or take your pet. The staff is very friendly, which may be in part because they are valued members of a co-op being paid a living wage rather than an expendable employee given the federal minimum wage.

Trisha L.

Yelp
I. Love. This. Store. Seriously, it is amazing!! They have a great local beer and wine selection. I bought a bottle of wine and they asked if I was going to drink it there on site. Whaaaaaat??? Who knew that was an option?! Everything in the bakery and on the hot food and cold food bar looked amazing! I wish we hadn't had lunch before we visited the store! We did buy chocolate chips cookies and chocolate cheesecake. They had a huge area of outdoor seating in a dog friendly shaded area. We grabbed a table in the shade and enjoyed the desserts we purchased. The chocolate cheesecake was out of this world amazing and was so rich that we ended up taking most of it home with us! The cashier told us that they are planning on opening a store in downtown Raleigh near Legends. I'm so excited for it to open up!
google avatar

Kaity J.

Yelp
If I lived anywhere near Chapel Hill, I would absolutely be a regular at Weaver Street Market. Great co-op in a college town. The food that I had was good - a salad bar with a lot of variety and pay-by-weight pricing. I also tried one of their pre-packaged pasta salads, which was yummy, as well. The thing that made this place really stand out for me was the outside seating area. Trees and lights and picnic tables with lots of people gathering for a meal - fantastic and laid back. Perfect spot for a spring/summer bite.

Dilip B.

Yelp
Weaver Street Market is my favorite grocery store. I love their quality, the kind, knowledgeable, and caring staff, and the selection. I feel very good about shopping where two of the store's three goals are focused on helping others - community members and organizations and other area businesses. Their bread is the best around!
google avatar

Andrew D.

Yelp
They are thisclose to being a parody of themselves, whatwith their local sustainable co-op organic everything, and a lawn crowd that most nights is just one more bongo set away from a Dead Show parking lot. Everything they bake is top-notch - Pierre M. a real-live French dude told me they make the best baguette in town. As a grocery, it's very good but expensive. If you're doing a Pub Crawl in Carrboro and starting before 9, it's definitely easy on the budget.
google avatar

R C.

Yelp
Not real Co-oP. The stores flavor ain't what it used to be...that is a negative comment. If you go there I ask you to look up and look close. But it is down under in dark corners close to the floor were they keep some foods--that's were the bugs are. But that does not matter, cause its all about the money. The out doors are great as long as you don't have to keep looking over your shoulders...

Jerome A.

Yelp
I have been shopping at Weaver Street since it opened in Carrboro. The merchandise is attractive. The employees are flailingly brusque. The customers are faux haute Southern pique. They pride themselves on setting a social tone. It's a sad try at sophistication.
google avatar

Stev E.

Yelp
Update March 9, 2017. Cockroaches continue to colonize the fountain area near the entrance. If you are at all squeamish of roaches (or insects in general) I strongly suggest avoiding the outdoor seating area. If you do sit in this area, don't put your bag on the mulch!

Anne-Louise B.

Yelp
Some of the most unfriendly, self-righteous checkout people you'll ever encounter... but their prepared foods are good.
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
My friend and I originally wanted to go to Carrburritos on a Sunday, but it was closed. So, we ventured our way over here to eat their hot bar, which she said she was a big fan of. To be honest, I was a bit skeptical, since I'd had the hot bar at Whole Foods and thought I'd overpaid for food that was just okay. This was not the case at Weaver Street Market. Everything I got was delicious. I got some baked Moroccan chicken, some beef with a sauce I can't remember, chickpeas, rice, roasted broccoli, and sweet potato hash. You pay by weight here, and I almost wish I just got more chickpeas -- they were that good. There's a nice little dining area tucked away in the back for people to eat and socialize. And if the food wasn't enough, I got a great beer recommendation from one of the employees there. Apparently he's been in the beer and wine business for over 20 years. I told him I liked Newcastle, and he fired off a couple of ales for me to give a try, as well as food pairings. It's now become one of my favorites. So that's where my fifth star comes from. All in all, this is a nice little hipster market with a very welcoming, community vibe. And they have great food.
google avatar

Chris K.

Yelp
Haven't been here in probably a year. Honestly stopped going because the store seemed so unkept to me, particularly the cafe area. To my delight there's been a huge improvement overall, but yet the cafe is still lacking in upkeep - meaning cleaning the tables. If only... Wide variety of excellent local produce and packaged goods and fresh local meats, etc. Employees are friendly and helpful. I just with they could get it together in that cafe. I know it's a co-op and members are to take responsibility, but customers don't walk around with a damp rag to clean their own tables.
google avatar

Melodie S.

Yelp
Weaver Street Market is truly the heart of Carrboro, it is really nice to see a small community with a true center like this place. A far better than average selection of typical co-op fare, but to me, the magic of Weaver street lies in the cafe and patio. The hot bar serves breakfast, including buckwheat cakes, biscuits, scrambled eggs etc. better than any brunch buffet you will find anywhere around here, for $6.99 lb. Plus you can take it out onto the patio/courtyard to enjoy and watch the fascinating Carrboro scene go by. The entire town of Carrboro enjoys free wireless, so a great place to escape the cubicle and get a little work done.

Yelp
This place is pretty awesome...I love their salad bar, baked goods, and coffee.I have come here several times since I discovered it and plan to continue coming here!

Yelp
Love this place! It's such an interesting concept that you can purchase food and drink (alcoholic beverages included - but you should check the rules with a sales associate) and just take it outside and enjoy. There are plenty of picnic tables to sit either as your own group or communally with others. I recently came here with a friend, and we got a bottle of wine to split. It was only $10! I was shocked to see how cheap the bottles of wine can be here. It's nice to see the range of price points for all budgets. While we knew we could drink alcohol on WSM's front lawn, we didn't know what exactly was allowed. We talked to one person, and at first she said "oh no, you can't drink a bottle outside" and then a second later she said "yes, you can share a bottle if you want, it's just one drink max per person, so you could even get one bottle per person." It was very confusing, but bottom line was that we could indeed take the bottle outside and drink it immediately. The coffee bar inside even has clean wine glasses for customer use. So we made sure to get a bottle that was corkless, and we even got another associate's confirmation that the red blend we chose was delicious. It truly was great; I'm looking forward to going back and getting some to stock up on. WSM has so many goodies, that I can see that it's tough to not buy something even if you're just perusing. However, most items that caught my eye were unique and pricey, so I ended up not getting anything. The hot bar looked good, and if you look at the website before you go, you can see what food specials they have that week. Some people have mentioned that it's difficult to find parking. There are two adjacent lots and street spots; it really depends on when you visit. I came on a Saturday evening and had no trouble at all getting a spot in the lot. There were several vacancies. Bottom line: this is such a great market full of interesting finds that you may never find anywhere else.

Yelp
The outdoor patio is a really neat community gathering place...especially on a lovely fall Saturday morning. Nice and shady in the summer.

Yelp
Looking for a delicious hot bar? Or maybe some amazing ready-to-go lunch/dinner options? How about groceries? A great wine selection? This place has it all! They clearly mark their vegan options, which makes me happy. I love Weaver Street! You can't beat studying here with a kombucha on a nice spring day. The outdoor area is awesome.
