Where to Stay and Eat in Vancouver

"Unlike many of Vancouver’s hotels, the Wedgewood is a privately owned boutique, decorated and still overseen by the daughters of its original founder, a Greek-born Vancouver businesswoman. And in contrast to the city’s modern business hotels, this place is all European-style pomp and old-world elegance, beginning with the antique furnishings, Persian rugs, and carved stone desk of the reception." - Kevin Chau

Wedgewood Hotel & Spa

"Set the scene for us. What do you see as you arrive at the hotel? The moment you step through the double doors and enter the stately, yet intimate, wood-and-wainscoting lobby, it’s clear that the Wedgewood was conceived of as a European-style small hotel. Lit by an elaborate chandelier, the reception area is understated and elegant. From the formally dressed doorman outside, to the always-incredible flower arrangements that provide a focal point in the Bacchus Lounge, the Wedgewood evokes an air of civility and attention to detail that we’ve come to expect from Relais & Chateaux hotels. What's the story behind this hotel?Founded by the late local hotelier Eleni Skalbania, this independently owned and operated 83-room hotel opened in 1984, quickly becoming a landmark. Eleni passed away in 2013, but the hotel operation is now run by the her daughter, Elpie Marinakis Jackson, who hasn't missed. Today, the hotel remains family owned and operated, and it shows—in the warmest possible way. Tell us more. How does that show in the rooms, for example? With L’Occitane bath products and Frette towels, bathrobes, and slippers, the rooms at the Wedgewood are designed to help you unwind. Ask for an upper-floor suite overlooking Hornby Street. From this vantage point, you can see Robson Square, designed by local architectural luminary Arthur Erickson, in all its glory. (Although it’s hard to see from the street level, the square is supposed to resemble a skyscraper lying on its side.) And the dining options? Anything good to eat and/or drink? The Wedgewood has only one restaurant and lounge, but it’s a very, very good one; Bacchus Lounge is perhaps the finest hotel bar in the city. The stately men’s-club ambience never seems stuffy or ponderous; rather, the space is a great place to sit back, converse, people-watch, and sip classic, well-made cocktails. On the restaurant side, expect a modern take on French cuisine, with starters like ginger-soy beef tartare and mains like butter-poached chicken blanquette with whipped garlic potatoes and smoked Tyrolean bacon. While this very competent kitchen doesn’t register with locals to the same extent as its lounge—they basically share a room, separated by a few steps and a piano—it should. How's the service? The Wedgewood has always set its service standards at an extremely high level, and whether you’re simply popping by for a drink or staying for several days, you’ll find the staff welcoming and hospitable, gracious but not overly familiar. There are no quirks you’re expected to put up with just because, well, it’s a small hotel—it's a very professional operation, from top to bottom. Who's this hotel most likely to appeal to?Fans of classic small hotels—places that deliver intimacy with personal service. Good to know! And how does the hotel fit in with the surrounding area?Located close to the Vancouver Art Gallery and within steps of Robson and Alberni streets, Wedgewood offers good proximity to downtown Vancouver. And if the afterwork scene at Bacchus Lounge is any indication, the hotel is really part of the neighborhood. Is there anything you'd change?Parking in the immediate area can be difficult; however, the Wedgewood has valet. Anything else we should know about staying here?Don’t ignore the elegant spa, where you’ll be pampered with Epicuren Skin products; the Winter Warmth Stone Massage is 90 minutes of Swedish-style ecstasy. And we really loved the homemade cookies with turndown service. Great. So why, in the end, would you recommend this hotel? This is a well-run, very elegant, European-style small hotel that knows what it takes to make guests feel at home." - Guy Saddy

"Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver , the Wedgewood is a distinctly different boutique hotel. The only Relais & Châteaux property in the city, the Wedgewood stands out with its top hat–wearing doorman, jewel box–like lobby with fireplace, and mirrored ceilings. Independently owned and family-run, the character of its owners shines through with hand-picked scenes of rural English idylls and hunting prints hanging onthe walls.Withfull balconies for nearly every guest room (thanks to its previous life as an apartment building), the Wedgewood also boasts larger-than-average rooms, each decorated slightly differently. Warm, peppery-red and rust shades contrast with delicate eggshell-blue and jade accents. Guestshave access to valet parking and babysitting services, as well as complimentary amenities, including a daily newspaper, fresh cookies at turndown, free Wi-Fi, bathrobes, and an in-room Nespresso machine."

Absolutely great experience! Decor & design first class. Elegant, ‘old fashioned’ doorman with top hat-very welcoming. Staff were all ultra helpful. Dicken checked us in…friendly & informative (service with a smile). Ryan at the desk was also very friendly (smiling again!) and engaging, as was a ‘Frenchman’?, whose name I forget. Our room overlooked Robson Square…great view (5th floor). It was tastefully set out, ‘big’ and quiet, with a large bath in the corner…we’ll use that next Sat when we return after our Holland America (Koningsdam) Alaskan Inside Passage cruise! Indeed…looking forward to getting back to The Wedgewood Hotel & hopefully get similar rooms, with a view? We’re also looking forward to dining in The Bacchus which we’ve booked for our return.

What a wonderful experience it was, to stay at the Wedgewood! I had a lot of luggage with me and the front desk could not have been more accommodating. They helped me with everything and were so gracious and friendly. The room was incredibly comfortable and beautifully furnished. I had room service which was delivered wry quickly and was delicious. My visit to the spa was wonderful and Anny was exceptional. I can’t recommend this enough!

Overall very good with attentive service. Great location ad nice size. Recommended. Bathroom sliding door of old-fashioned heavy type without a sensible handle to open/close easily - such a simple maintenance job. Seems to be a blind spot. A bit stingy with the coffee machine. Biggest issue is the air conditioning. we tried to set it to 24 but did not go above 22.5, and difficult to understand too. Breakfast cooking was very good, but the evening burger was burnt. Generally, too little vegetable content in the menu. Very attentive staff.

Loved the hotel. Awesome location right in the heart of so many restaurants. And walking distance to so many places. Had breakfast there and the service and food was awesome . Everyone working there was so nice and friendly. Our luggage was already in our room by the time we got to the room. They had a complimentary bottle of wine and card for us. Service was top notch! Would definitely stay there again. We had the one bedroom suite for a girls trip and it was so nice. They had turn down service every evening. We were told the one bedroom suites don’t have the best views. And yes they were right. Not the best views. Also quite loud at night with all the alley sounds . The suites also have a nice balcony.

Great hotel, great location for walking around downtown Vancouver, great service, and a good bar and restaurant. Lots of locals were frequenting the bar and casual restaurant area. I wish I could remember the doorman's name because he was a lot of fun and very helpful. I do remember he is from Newfoundland. ||Next time I would ask for a room on the front or Hornby street side of the hotel since the back side where we were is on an alley and was quite noisy with commercial trucks backing up, emptying garbage bins etc. I would also skip the spa next time since the waiting area is cramped and the reception team seemed to be unorganized.

Stayed for one night after long flight from Uk. |Friendly welcome from all staff. Comfortable room, with large bath, which unfortunately were not able to use, as we were flying onward early next morning. Looking forward to returning soon when we plan to utilise all hotel facilities

My daughter and I stayed at the Wedgewood this past Monday and had a lovely time. I really want to acknowledge how thoughtful and hardworking the staff in the hotel and in the restaurant were to myself and my daughter. And, I think it’s important to mention that I have an LGBQT daughter and the hotel staff used the proper pronouns and addressed her exactly as they addressed me, for that alone they get five stars and a big “Thank you!” The rooms are a tiny bit dated, but the service is so good and everyone tried so hard to make our stay memorable, I can let it go, but it should be mentioned. I recommend this hotel.

Location is basically perfect - right near Metro stations on multiple lines, including quick access to the airport. Service was incredible right from the start. The front desk experience was fantastic, with a helpful and friendly checkin. Our room was excellent, with an incredible balcony patio on which we were able to sit outside and enjoy the wonderful weather. I used the gym every day as it was excellent, and we used the steam room which was a really nice touch. We didn't use the spa or done at the restaurant, as we had a lot to get done in five days, but they both seemed excellent as well. All around very impressed with our comfortable week long stay and we will be back!
