"In most parts of the country, shoppers at Wegmans can browse aisles of wine that go beyond the standard boxed pinot gris or Barefoot pink Moscato found at many supermarkets, a selection New Yorkers have been denied by a Prohibition-era law passed in 1934 that prohibits grocers from selling wine. Gov. Kathy Hochul’s administration has set up commissions to reconsider those regulations, and supermarket chains like Wegmans have been actively lobbying on the issue — Wegmans reportedly spent $30,000 on lobbying efforts in May alone — even as major distributors such as Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits and Empire Merchants have also spent heavily to influence local officials." - Luke Fortney
