Where to Order Fabulous Cakes for Any Occasion Around D.C. | Eater DC

"The trained bakers at this East Coast grocer seem to be constantly putting out fresh cakes, from a Boston cream to a traditional sheet cake. It’s a perfect spot to stop in for a last-minute confection." - Claudia Rosenbaum

Yelp
I frequently visit Wegmans for my grocery and bakery needs, and I'm always impressed by the quality of their products. Recently, I purchased their heavy whipping cream for pasta, and it's easily the best I've ever used--rich and perfect for cooking. Every item I've bought from them, whether it's bakery goods or groceries, consistently meets high-quality standards.

Yelp
You know what I love about Wegmans? They have never laid off an employee, to due to economic conditions. Also they empower their folks, to do what's right decision wise for customer service. That is outstanding, and I tip my cap respectfully to this chain. This one is gigantic, and it's parking lot can be challenging. Admittedly I wish I made the money to afford the yuppie aisles, but don't have that salary range. The train that goes around the store is a nice touch. To their credit, they do have good sales on regular items. Their fruit and vegetable quality is excellent. You will save more at Aldi or Walmart perhaps, but this company keeps things close enough. In this age of inflation, I'm grateful that they have. Food inequality is a real issue. Here they've helped this single dad, be able to add some items for lunches and dinners. The crowds are nuts and lines can occur. All staff do their best, but expect to be here with everyone.

Yelp
Fresh foods, ready to eat, bakery, produce, whatever it may be, this place always delivers the best. Don't remember a time where service maybe questionable and I hope that it stays spot on. Place always looks clean.

Yelp
If I'm ever in Washington DC, which used to be all the time, I visit this location for breakfast, lunch, and sometimes even dinner. Wegmans is like no other supermarket and this location is no exception. The quality is beyond great. The selection is always a huge variety of everything. I have to confess, my close friend lived right next door but/and I shared her passion for the Wegmans experience. Bring your kids to the food court. They'll be occupied and well fed after! Parking is fairly easy, they do get very busy.

Yelp
Always a great experience at Wegmans. They always have what we need. It is an adventure stopping in for groceries especially those things you need that you can only find at Wegmans. Being from Los Angeles Wegmans is a better choice than Erewhon, Whole Foods, and Gelson's.

Yelp
Giving 1 star mainly because of the price hike for hot bar, but also the lack of consistency with what they have, and the quality of cooking. The breaded chicken insides are more often than not hard and overcooked. We used to go weekends for fun meals, but we are now going to Whole Foods - which is 11.99/lb vs the $15.99 at wegmans...and the food is 100% better! The grocery store part of wegmans is of course great. Awesome generic items for a good price. That gets 4 stars. It is usually busy on weekends which makes shopping not fun. I tend to go early or on weekdays. But for hot bar - why is it so expensive for such subpar foods??? Please fix that. At least match Whole Foods, but You should be lower honestly. Leaving my 1 star until that changes.

Yelp
Rude, rude, rude! Unbelievably poor service! The young woman at the coffee counter actually argued with me about paying there. You are basically forced to do self checkout. She walked away without giving me a receipt, or even offering me one. Recommend avoiding this store. Go to Whole Foods instead, cheaper, better, and much better service. Shame on you Wegmans, you have lost your way. Greed took over, it used to be a good brand, not anymore!

Yelp
I came to the VA Wegmans because MD doesn't have wine, welp at least the Germantown location. One thing is this location is that the employees are not customer oriented. They are not friendly. I wouldn't say that they are rude, but is it that bad to work for Wegmans? I love the chain, but wow, this location, like Germantown, makes you wanna think twice. So I went in the wine section, and there was this old white guy that stood there like a statue, didn't smile or greet, I could of used a may I help you or something since, I was looking for a wine recommendation. I usually would ask for help, but he just wanted to tail me for a bit, I got annoyed and asked if he needed something from me because he kept on watching me or what. I wanted to yell out, "im not gonna steal!" I decided not to do any wine and went elsewhere for that. Same in the deli department, no hellos, or may I help you or thank yous. It's whose next. Floral department same. Dry dry people. The cashier was decent. The store was well stocked, and everything I needed , I was able to get. It's clean and organized, which is why this review is 3 stars. I'm big on customer service. So I'm disappointed yet again with Wegmans. They only location that gets it is Waugh Chapel. They have long lines at the registers because they expect you to be a cashier, I refuse to use self check out. It's not my job to do their job. Customers should get a discount for doing a cashiers job. Half the time, those things work, and my patience wears thin, so yeah, no. You won't see me ever at a self check out! They charge for bags, and they don't ask if you brought any, I had to tell my cashier that I have them. Parking layout sucks, especially when you are leaving. Do better Wegmans!

Yelp
Love this store. The selection is amazing and especially if you are in a hurry and need something pre-prepped like a charcuterie board, or pre seasoned beef, or unique wine or beer for a party or for a Thursday night. I always shop here. It's a little expensive but I can find Everything here vs going to a couple or three other stores.

Yelp
I love this store. They offer a wide selection of high-quality items. However, I would like to bring an issue to the management's attention. The lack of visible signage regarding the pet policy could be problematic. On a few occasions, I have seen customers with seemingly untrained dogs inside the store. Their behavior suggested that they were not service dogs. Since this situation could pose pose safety and hygiene concerns for shoppers, staff and legitimate service dogs, please provide clear notices at the entrance of the store stating that only service dogs are allowed. Clear notices can help inform customers of the store's pet policy and prevent any misunderstandings. And this information could remind some pet owners of the limits of their privileges in a grocery store setting.

Yelp
If the prices weren't so expensive, I would make Wegmans my one-stop shop for groceries. It has literally everything and loads of options. Wegmans is known for its large selection of fresh produce, baked goods, meats, deli, seafood, and prepare foods/cafe. See all my pics. Its produce section is expansive. It also has the key international foods like Chinese bok choi. A lot of their items are organic. Their bakery is also just as expansive. You can place an order for a cake ahead of time. I like to buy their fresh pane Italian bread, honey ham, and Swiss cheese. Though with the pandemic inflation prices, these have definitely taken hits (ex. bread in 2021 $2, now 8/2022 $3.75). Their selection of cheese is mind blowing. Their floral section is one of their highlights too. They also carry multiple brands of packages goods. For example, different types of sunscreen, shampoos, skin care, ice cream, etc. Though if what you are looking for is not too niche, then you will find the same thing cheaper at other stores like Walmart. So definitely price check with their app if you are frugal like me. Their prepare foods are definitely very pricey. I definitely wouldn't go out of my way just to eat at their cafe. They have plenty of checkout lines and self checkout counters. I almost never have to wait in line to check out. As of 2022, they started charging for bags. But if you download and make an account with their app, you do get one free reusable bag. They have a pretty expansive parking lot. They also have a garage parking on the lower level, which they use for pickup. I am not a fan of the entrances to the parking lot however. It is a pretty roundabout way to enter the lot. But not a dealbreaker for the location.

Yelp
Wegmans is a destination. Hy-Vee is a close runner up and my local Publix a distant third. Wish Publix was in Florida. I do travel north based on Wegmans. Best subs, best bakery, best prepared foods.

Yelp
I love the Phamacy at Wegmans Fairfax. They are gracious and caring, and they always seem to have the best prices - wonderful staff and service.

Yelp
If you have enough money, or are looking for something special for your family or an event. The store is huge, and the pharmacy is very good. But they are expensive, and if you are on a budget, that store is not for you.'

Yelp
I mean how can you give it anything less.... They have EVERYTHING! And then some.... They always have unique fruit that I can't find other places... the cheese department! The bakery!!! Plus the plants section for fun gifts!

Yelp
Wegmans is my favorite grocery store, so I will try to keep this short. Basically you can come here for all your needs (food, household items, random items, balloons, friendly smiles). The bakery section is ah-mazing: from classics like round cakes and cupcakes to more fancier selections like mini cake treats in edible chocolate cups. You're probably thinking "it's just a grocery store", and you would be 100% incorrect. Wegmans is an experience, enjoyed by all ages. Grab some coffee from the coffee bar, do your shopping, then grab a freshly made salad or pizza slice on your way out. One of the coolest things for me is seeing what new seasonal or local items they have in stock. Oftentimes it's the fruit that grabs me (the fresh produce hits you as soon as you enter). Since Wegmans are not currently offered in most states, our visitors always seem to fall in love with Wegmans. I think it's the lights and openness of the store. It literally grabs you and will keep you hostage for hours (if you allow). Pricing can be a little elevated which mimics the pricing of most items these days. They offer grocery drive-up services if you prefer to shop online or on their app. Cakes can be custom made with advance notice. The florist section is great too if you're in need or want of fresh flowers. The cheese selections are wonderful for party planning (or just eating fi you're like me). If you have little ones, stop by the customer care counter and grab a sticker for them!

Yelp
Wegmans never disappoints - the food, layout, locations, and cleanliness. I hope they keep up the good work

Yelp
Love the store! The isles are stocked with fresh bread and danish as well as cookies! The service is pretty good; it's really hard to find things as they're always moving them, and there's not usually the chart, even though they say, there's one on the end of the isles anyway; it's a nice store, and the people are generally helpful, and they have a wide variety of goodies..

Yelp
Pricey but worth the quality of the products you get. I don't live local to the area but when I'm near a store I always stop in.

Yelp
Wegmans gets an A+ for its employees and wide variety of food, wine, dairy, and household items for sale. Inside the store there is generally a good vibe, although I've noticed some of the patrons are rude and egocentric (they cut off disabled people in the aisles, hit other patrons with their carts, encroach on personal space, and are rude). The seafood is double the price of competitors, though the quality is good. Their sushi is pretty good and is made daily. They no longer make cakes to order in person, one has to do it online and the prices are outlandish. Word to the wise: every time I've bought lamb here it was rotten. Keep your receipt and return rotten food the same day. Customer service is aggressive and uncooperative, and they will try to shame you into keeping their $20 rotten meat and draw out the return process for minutes and minutes on end as if you, the customer, did something wrong to them. The ambiance is usually hectic and negative in this store except if you find a quiet corner somewhere, which is rare. They sell $9 name brand organic butter and have quantity limits on certain products, even though the pandemic has been over for two years. The parking lot is a nightmare! There is one way in and out. And I've been hit by a horrible elitist, entitled Karen, who later lied under oath about her liability even though she accepted full liability at the scene of the accident. Fairfax County Police will NOT respond to a car accident or provide a police report, because the parking lot is technically "private property." So, you better have a Dashcam and full coverage insurance if you shop here. Be very, very careful at this establishment not only because of their atrocious prices (about $120-180/bag), but also because the drivers in the parking lot are lunatics and are reckless (often driving 20-25mph in a 5mph zone, they don't yield, they cut across parking aisles and spaces, etc). The patrons here are often very, very entitled, rude, and perjurous, so beware .

Yelp
The pharmacy in Burlington MA is poor. Fail to follow thru on refills, bad at communicating statuses, unable to get the meds you need, and blame others for their failings. Don't be in the health sphere if you can't deliver good, compassionate, and timely care. I have no choice but to start tranferring my prescriptions elsewhere.

Yelp
Wegmans by far has got to be the greatest grocery store of all time. They carry everything under the sun. They have a huge lunch buffet with so much to choose from. Perfect for grab n go to get back to work. The have a large verity of fresh seafood, grilling meats, fresh produce and an awesome bakery. I wish we had one in the Cleveland area but we don't. Maybe one day.

Yelp
It's a really nice grocery store! I don't know if it's about the same amount you would spend at a wholefoods, but I like it quite a lot especially the coupons we get from there.

Yelp
Service was excellent! Went to the seafood section just before closing (Sunday 8:00 p.m. The store itself closes later). Most of the items were already put away and I asked the guy if they had snow crabs. He mentioned they had thawed ones with missing leg parts or frozen (I knew to ask if he didn't suggest). I was happy he looked around, despite closing up, for the frozen snow crabs and took care in getting us the four pounds we wanted. His attitude was great as we were expecting the awkward we're closing feel. He also shaved some weight because the crabs were frozen and mentioned it because of the ice on the crab legs. Thank you!

Yelp
I'm impressed by the top quality of the produce and sliced veggies, fluffy bread and pastries, soft tortillas, flavorful veggie burgers, delicious prepared veggies full of flavor, large selection of cheese, and variety of vegetarian and meat dishes, and even chocolate dipped strawberries for Valentine's Day. Wegmans has everything you need - totally worth the 25 minute drive from McLean! If you can't commit to a full loaf, there's plenty of 1/2 loaves of bread. - the fresh Rosemary bread and fluffy whole wheat tortillas are always on my grocery list. The bread and tortilla have a much longer shelf life of around 5 days compared to the rolls which get stale and rock hard after a day. My hubby loves the marinated meats and seafood: Filet mignon, Chicken with Marsala sauce, Teriyaki Chicken, Italian seasoned Chicken, Salmon Pesto, Salmon with Lemon Pepper Rub, Tuna Tataki power meal. He enjoys the prepackaged meals and throws them in the oven for 45 minutes. The cuts of the filet mignon is pretty impressive and his favorite of all of the meats. Lots of fresh healthy vegetarian options: Southwest Black Bean Burgers, Veggie Burgers, Mushroom Burger, Tofu wraps, Avocado Rolls, Quinoa Garden Vegetable Roll Sushi, Seaweed salad, and Tempeh power bowls. The fresh Southwest Black Bean Burgers are packed with flavor and loaded with beans and veggies. The Mushroom and Veggie burgers are mushy and don't cook as well. The burgers keep well for a week (even after they expire!) The prepared veggies are bursting with flavor! I love the Honey Roasted Carrots, Soy Mushrooms, Parmesan Cauliflower, and the Brussel Sprouts. I'm not a big fan of the Sauteed Kale or the Broccolini. The fresh Pesto sauce and Alfredo Sauces are delicious! The Wegman brand of fettucini is delicious and cooks al dente is 2-3 min. I wasn't a big fan of the Eggplant Parm ravioli. Spicy Thai Red Curry and Mushroom Dash simmer sauces are bursting with flavor. They pair well with the Wegman's Whole Wheat noodles and Zucchini noodles. The Black Bean dip is also quite tasty! Fresh prepared food - recommend eating within a day. The Avocado Roll is my favorite. I wasn't a big fan of the Tempeh Power Bowls, the bowl was packed with rice. I would skip the ginormous bland Portabella Cheese Pizza, the mushroom pizza was overloaded with cheese with a couple of skimpy pieces of basil. My favorite sweet treats from the self-serve area: Ultimate Chocolate Cheesecake, Chocolate Chip Cookie, Cookie Monster sugar cookie, Cookie Sandwich oozing with buttercream and drizzled with chocolate, the shortbread cookie with a Raspberry filling, and resh juicy chocolate dipped strawberry around Valentine's Day are among my favorites. Not a big fan of the Killer Cookie Dough Brownie, way tooooo sweet with a dense layer of gooey cookie dough. The cakes are divine particularly the ganache filling! I love the vanilla buttercream cake and the cookie cake! The hot bar has too many trays of food to choose from! Although I'm impressed by the variety of salad toppings with farro, quinoa, cous cous, and fresh veggies, some are better than others. I enjoyed the Jewel Orso, Potato Au Grain (dense and flavorful), and let's not forget about the mac and cheese! The orzo soups is pretty tasty. The shelves of local and imported cheeses got you covered to make your own cheese board. The Havarti with Horseradish, Chevre goat cheese, and Truffle Cheese from Tuscany are among my favorites. As it gets crazy crowded over the weekend, I recommend coming during the weekdays or the evenings. It's definitely worth the trip, I love making the haul from McLean to stock up and enjoy a cookie on the road!

Yelp
#ThankYouThursday ! Wegmans!! The real HEROES! MY HEROES! from the first day people got crazy and started buying things from shelves like crazy and Wegmans under Mike's leadership have done amazing things!! Starting from getting the shelves restocked again rapidly, to installing hand sanitizer stations every where , installing new safety measures! Unbelievable service!!! I love them! Thank you Thank you Thank you!!! I hope all things goes back to normal very soon! We will come back and We will come back stronger!

Yelp
Had a horrible experience with a man (whose name starts with G and is a country) in trying to return a product. He gaslighted me and as other posters have stated "was aggressive and rude." I am a senior and he treated me like I was a five year old child scolding and ridiculing me on beverage storage. He made it seem like I was always returning things which is not true. I didn't even want a refund, I was simply trying to exchange the product. Furthermore, G man should have called someone from the wine department first before the harsh lecture. Thankfully, I requested a different manager who called the wine manager (like he should have in the first place) and both were wonderful!!!! Why is it one bad apple spoils it for everyone else. Too bad Total Wine doesn't sell this label. Their customer service is sublime!

Yelp
This Wegmans (Fairfax location) is terrible. Parking is a nightmare. The store layout makes no sense which results in frustration and wasted time looking for ordinary items. The employees are usually friendly but not terribly helpful. Also, they never have enough registers open so there is always a line, or a bunch of lines. If it's a busy day they'll have extra cashiers but it's always 50% of how many they really need. It's like they want to make sure you have to wait! And I know what you're thinking, why not use the self checkout? The self checkout ALWAYS has a line because they often only have half of them working and the interface for the self checkout is so bad it takes everyone 10 minutes minimum to use the self checkout!

Yelp
Always delicious fresh food. They have the best tasting summer tomatoes. Great flavor like they came right from the farm. Their breads are extraordinary and my family is in love with the Jalapeno Bread. Their seafood is on point, fresh, and the people that work there give great advice. My favorite for sure.
google avatar

Deric C.

Yelp
This place is magical. I do my grocery shopping exclusively here. The food from the fresh bars are always tasty. The prices was in line with what is to be expected from a grocery store. I love their crab cakes and their rotisserie chicken is a good quick grab if you are short on time to make dinner. The service is always great, and the employees are really helpful at helping you find things.

Yelp
I just spent my first time at Wegmans and let's just say I was wonderstruck, definitely not your typical Trader Joe's. There were many options to eat for a meal and I found most of them fairly enjoyable before I began my shopping. It was busy but I couldn't be one to judge because of the nearing thanks giving. People were friendly and helpful and I see myself going there again, definitely recommend. For anyone looking for cons I will say it was overwhelming at first, so many options and information in your face all at once. TBH reminded me of a Cheesecake Factorys menu because of this.

Shellie C.

Yelp
I have disabilities. I shop at Wegman's a few times a few times a week. EVERY time I go in there they have moved things and it takes me an extra 30 minutes to find where they moved it. This makes it so hard for people with disabilities. I was so peed off last night because they moved something. My health is not good and my heart & lungs not good. Spent an extra 20 minutes that trip trying to find something they moved. This is NOT convient for people with disabilities. But why should they care. They keep moving things. The more you have to search for it, the more you buy. It's all about $$. This should be against the ADA!

Yelp
Great staff, great food, very clean and tons of fresh fruits and veggies! Flowers are amazing

Yelp
I definitely need to visit this location earlier in the day since a lot of stuff was already sold out by the time I went. It's nice and spacious and all the employees were friendly.

Yelp
Wegmans has been a lifesaver during the current mass hysteria and panic buying. We were able to stock up on fruits and veggies and children's medicine that have been missing off the shelves at Costco. Thankful that Wegmans remains open and workers are working tirelessly to constantly restock items as fast as they can. Pre crisis, we are usually here for pastries, cakes, produce, cheese and pizza. Everything is always fresh, pricey but the quality is above par. You get your money's worth.

E L.

Yelp
Pharmacy is horrific. Long waits for prescriptions and 20 min wait for a flu shot and finally pharmacist shows up and hands me a form to fill. When i mentioned that i had already been waiting for 20 minutes she rudely replied O have five people ( and during those 20 minutes she didn't call a single person). Will remove our prescriptions from this pharmacy. Taking them at Giant..o

Elmer E H.

Yelp
Freshest produce, bakery & deli. Consistently less expensive than most other grocery chains. Family owned and operated

Yelp
Oh this location is absolutely amazing. From prepared food selection to groceries, cheese selection and more. Love shopping there. A bit pricy but worth it!
google avatar

Nichole L.

Yelp
To visit Wegmans is to love Wegmans. I have never, ever had a negative food experience, irrespective of the store's location. There's Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Harris Teeter, Giant, Safeway, Aldi, Food Lion, et al. But when it comes to a food selection lusciousness, in-store custom meal and dessert preparation, and customer service as well as shopping experience, it's Wegmans hands down. I'm excited simply writing my review!
google avatar

Steven B.

Yelp
Wegman's is always a great shopping experience, but this location in Fairfax in particular offers above-board service. The head of the pharmacy happily dropped what she was doing to help us find an elusive vitamin supplement. Another store employee overheard my wife and me talking about wanting to find a good kind of bread to make French Toast and recommended a great brand of cinnamon Brioche. This store is definitely worth the trip if you're in the area.
google avatar

Selamawit M.

Yelp
There are no designated parking spots for pregnant women. This is a problem because the store gets quite busy, with lines stretching down the aisles. So even a quick trip can last 30 min or more simply due to the indoor traffic. This can be a problem for anyone who cannot stand for a long period of time.
google avatar

Lindsay N.

Yelp
Wegmans did a fabulous job on my baby yoda cupcakes! They were cute and delicious! It definitely made my birthday celebration fun and memorable.
google avatar

Gary N.

Yelp
The customer service is the best, feeling at home with there staff. Ok so the prices are hit or miss, I travel the ten miles because of the customer service and fresh food. Only thing Wegmans don't have is my ice cream (Friendly), so I have to stop at Giant supermarket on the way back home.
google avatar

Paul D.

Yelp
Better when it first opened. Smaller meat counter. It is continually re-arranged so I am constantly looking for stuff. The Wegmans brand is often more expensive than national brands.
google avatar

Sharon R.

Yelp
What's not to love about the Wegman's near Kingstowne? It's HUGE, has everything your palette desires, and has a high-quality house brand with prices lower than other grocery stores' brands. There's plenty of parking, too, with easy ingress and outgress.
google avatar

Karen M.

Yelp
Who doesn't love Wegman's? I especially love their bakery and prepared food section. Now that it's just the two of us at home we get a lot of those foods for dinner. They're always fresh and tasty. Around various holidays they'll have foods particular to that holiday (I.e., Christmas cookies, Yule logs, etc.). Their chocolate cake is incredibly good and it's the perfect size for a family birthday celebration. And you can't beat their chocolate cream pies! Yum!! Their meats and seafood section are the best around, and the staff there is quick, helpful and knowledgeable. They have a huge section for fresh fruits and vegetables right when you walk in on the main level. They also have a very large section offering wines from all over. Be prepared to walk a lot as the store is huge, but the checkout lines are numerous so even at holidays they get you through fairly quickly.
google avatar

E M.

Yelp
Oh my god gave prices risen! Executives keep their salaries and just raised prices. It's way out of hand at Wegmans. They lost me as a regular.
google avatar

Jim W.

Yelp
Look what Wegman's delivered for Mother's Day- and then said not their problem... How can they think this is acceptable?
