The Best Hot Dogs in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"One of the oldest continually operating food carts in the region, the Wiener Wagon has been a downtown Vancouver institution since 1976 and continues to grill juicy beef franks for hungry workers on their lunch breaks. On a cold day, opt for a loaded chili dog, or if the weather’s warmer, try the Skip’s favorite, a hot link with mustard, onions, kraut, and tomatoes, named in honor of beloved founder Skip Ballweber, who died in 2020. There is no onsite seating at this small, lunchtime-only cart." - Nathan Williams

Stumbled upon this place when scouring google maps and I am so happy I found it!!! Its a great little cart with food that makes your stomach and soul feel comforted to the bone. Will be back!

Google
Weiner Wagon has been a staple in Vancouver for years. They have three different variety of dogs. The garden variety hot dog, mild polish and a hot link. There's lots of toppings to choose from. When trying a hot dog joint for the first time, I always order the most spicy dog with chili, cheese, mustard and onion. Being a spicy guy I ordered the hot link. I hope and cross my fingers that wieners advertised as hot or spicy actually will be. Usually they're not. That was true for Weiner Wagon's hot link. The spice was so mild I wasn't sure if it was the mustard. The chili is Hormel with beans. I prefer chili with no beans on hot dogs. A hot dog with chili, cheese and onion is a hard enough balancing act as is. Chili with beans adds goopy man-over-board moments. The gal cut my hot link dog into bite size pieces. I appreciate the effort but it made the dog impossible to eat as a handheld. The bun didn't have enough structure to hold it all together. Thankfully she included a fork. If I return, I will definitely ask to omit the dog bites treatment. Having said all that, I enjoyed the dog and it was a good price. Sure I prefer Diggity Dawg, Frank's-A-Lot and especially the current champ, Zach's Shack, but Weiner Wagon is still a good dog. Check out my profile for more great eateries and craft cocktail bars.

Google
I stopped by to pick up a Dog after hearing about the rerun of the Wagon ( yeah, it’s been a while, my first chance to stop) I like it basic dog and a bun, maybe some onion. This is a good place for that, but they have other things to try, taco bowls, chili bowls, With Fritos, all a yum in my book.

Google
Nice little corner cart, with lots of options for your hot dog, very nice and friendly lady running it.

Mari Lemar

Google
A very quick pick me up. It does get busy but look like I got there before the crowded. I forgot the name of what I got, but it has Frito lays in it and a bunch of yummy healthy toppings. The chili is very flavorful. I will definitely be back.

Google
The very best hot dog lunch around!!!!

Google
While working in downtown Vancouver I was getting hungry so I stepped outside and saw the Wiener Wagon across the street and decided to try it. I had the polish dog with all the fixings and I enjoyed it.

Google
Hot dog perfection. Off menu item: hot link Chicago style w/ sauerkraut.

Yelp
Simple hotdog done spectacular ways. The owner is super friendly and chatted us up while we waited. The dogs are typical fare, what makes them special are the toppings you can add. We loved ours great stop while perusing downtown. FYI cash or cashapp only

Yelp
Really neat place from a bygone era. Walk-up hotdog vendor selling a wide range of hot-dog dishes that hit the spot for a low key, casual lunch. It's a food cart, so don't expect too much, but its well worth with it.

Sam M.

Yelp
Southwest Washington's first food cart. Best dogs on the west coast. The owner is an amazing women and help the Community more than any other business. If you can't find her on Main Street or at any of the local events check your local skate park. #swiftskatepark!

Yelp
Look. At. Those. Prices. You are not going to find much in the way of 'healthy' choices here but that is not their reason for being. The wieners are actually of pretty good quality, considering the price. My son and I ate there just the other day for the grand total of 8 bucks. You can't even do that by yourself at McD's these days. There is no immediate seating area but there are places to sit outside at the other end of the building. Besides, we have all had plenty of practice eating in our cars by now. Just look at the picture of the menu board, see if you find something you like and come on down.

Yelp
Was looking for a quick bite while working and ended up here. I got the basic dog, but I did the polish dog. Most add ons are free, except for like cheese and what not. Super tasty. As I was paying, she let me know they didn't accept card. She let me know it was fine and I could come back later to pay her. Customer service is on point and friendly. Came by not too long after to pay her back with a tip. Will be back.

Yelp
What a great surprise! Delicious, fresh and unique variety of dogs! Love them. I return as often as humanly possible.

Yelp
Best Hot Dogs in town! I've been coming here over 30 years. This had to be a record for the longest running food cart at the same location. Congratulations on staying in buissess so long. :).

Jonathan J.

Yelp
I've been eating lunch off and on here for 20 years. Always delicious. Get yourself a Taco Pie.
google avatar

Cliff P.

Yelp

Yelp
Wish I could give this place a better star rating but, just can't. Like other reviews, the lady running this food truck is an exceptional person. The food is okay and more along the line of food you'd get from one of those mobile trucks that goes around to warehouse and manufacturing places honking their horn to signal their arrival (I'm guessing most of you haven't had that experience). I had the Fritos dish with a sliced hot dog in it. Sour cream, chili, onions, mushrooms, and bell peppers. Kind of reminded me of when I was young and broke and this is all the food I had so just threw it all together and hoped for the best. It was okay, I just think it wasn't up to par with a restaurant, made from scratch meal (I know, all restaurant meals aren't made from scratch). Wasn't real impressed with the hot dog itself and I got the impression the chili was from a can. I'd say this is a 3.5 star place.

Yelp
Dude- these guys are the most consistent individuals I've ever met my life. I can't imagine they make a ton of money, but they are very loyal to that street corner. They are right outside of my office and I admire their perseverance! Out of admiration I buy these hotdogs and to be honest with you they're equally as admirable as the owners. You can taste the hard work and in every hotdog. I appreciate the fact that these guys are there rain or shine. They really treat you like you're the only customer, and to be honest with you, you very well may be. If you have some time to go by there give these guys a high-five, slap on the back, and buy some hotdogs! Tip them for more money than what your food was worth, and tell them God bless. Do some good in this world support local businesses. Buy 45 hotdogs for all of downtown Vancouver if you can. Give it up for the Wiener boys. Also it's not always about how the food tastes it's about the experience, and the opportunity to give back. Nobody's perfect but these guys are, and I appreciate their heart for the city and I appreciate their heart for these hotdogs.

Yelp
I have been eating at this cool spot for years and the food is always sooooo good The owner is a hard working women..p Pease support and tip generously because she feeds the homeless out of her own pocket. Thank you Kenny

Yelp
Stopped by to get a hotdog. Place was closing in 30 minutes or so. Asked the gal for a chili dog and all I got was Fritos and chili with some cheese. Not sure if she heard me wrong or what this was. It was a lot and covered so I didn't realize there wasn't a hotdog in the meal til I was about halfway done. Needless to say was disappointed in the food and service was subpar. Idk maybe because I am new but I hear the owner and the gal are usually very friendly. Sadly I didn't get that vibe or treatment when I was there.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is awesome. Best (and only?) hotdogs you'll find in the 'couve. Fun, creative toppings add tons of flavor to these dogs. Order anything, you'll love it. And, it'll be cheaper than anything else you can get in the city.
google avatar

Mal C.

Yelp
Let me start by saying that I rarely crave hot dogs, but this cart has me converted - best dog I've ever had! I get Skip's Special with a Polish dog instead of the hot links and add ketchup with the mustard (also comes w/ sauerkraut, onions, tomatoes, and jalapeños). It's only $1.75 piled high. The polish dog had a nice pop as you bit into it - perfectly cooked! Big flavor and no issues with it afterward ;)
google avatar

Yelp
Great place to grab a quick hot dog. This is a food cart. Excellent hot dog. They have all kinds of flavors and combos. Definitely worth a stop. Great prices and excellent service
google avatar

Rick H.

Yelp
Me: "how can a hot dog stand have five stars?" Mario: "....." Me: "god, at these prices there is no way these are five star hot dogs. Uh yeah, can I have the polish dog with ketchup, mustard, relish and onions?" Mario: "...." Me: "He'll have what I am having. How much? That can't be right. That's almost as cheap as Costco." Mario: "...." Me: "No way these are five star hot dogs." Mario: ".... .... ...." Me (mumbling around full mouth): "They must use Angel meat in these." Mario: "...!" Me:"Uh yeah, can I have two more? Exact same way. Thank you."

Yelp
Lets put it this way... The wagon is a dog stand. The guy that owns it is nice and PILES the kraut and jalapenos HIGH. The cost, you ask? $1.75 The chili with dog is 2.75 and it is covered in cheese and onions... the freaking 7-11 chili dog costs more than that and if you go to the wiener wagon you won't be supporting a capitalistic global powerhouse that the greedy stockholders make their money from the sweat of the workers brow... have you seen the camps that these 7-11 people have to work in? the conditions are miserable and does 2.75 even give them enough revenue to get rid of the callouses on their hands? I think not! But if you went to the wiener wagon, you would be promoting a green and sustaining business that uses only organic eyes, beak and feet. What kind of people in society won't support the local business? Those that don't eat at the wiener wagon, that's who.

Yelp
I recently started working in Vancouver and try to get out for a walk everyday on my lunch break. Everyday I have been walking by this little hot dog wagon and after seeing it's rave reviews on Yelp I decided to give it a shot. Boy am I glad I did! The low prices are NO LIE. I don't know how prices like this are possible in 2015! The quality of the dogs are quite good too. The woman that helped me was incredibly nice. I'll definitely be stopping back every so often (especially when I forget my lunch). Most inexpensive meal I have ever had: $3.25.
google avatar

Chezz C.

Yelp
If you want a good, cheap, fun lunch in downtown Vancouver, this is it. Choice of regular dog, polish or hot link, with an array of toppings ranging from standard (sauerkraut, onions, chili) to strange (pineapple, sour cream). A bag of chips, a cookie and a pop are the only other items on the menu. Lunch will run you about $2.50. Find a nice sunny spot to eat or take it back to your office.
google avatar

Elneal M.

Yelp
Robin knows how to build a Frito Pie with a hotlink nestled at the bottom- my entire office heads down there nearly every month- here is the math: 4-5 people fed and happy, less that $20 spent!
google avatar

Garrett W.

Yelp
Simply the best hotdog in Vancouver. They are cash only so bring cash and treat your stomach

Doug R.

Yelp
I have been a customer of the Weiner Wagon for over 40 years, since the very beginning in the 1970s and I am just as big a fan today. Robin is carrying on the tradition of great hot dogs at very reasonable prices. I would venture to say that the Wiener Wagon is very likely the most economical place to eat currently in downtown Vancouver. Indeed, cheap food, once plentiful downtown, has become very hard to come by. A person can can fill thrmselves here for much less than $5, which is also becoming difficult to do. If I really want to stuff myself, I usually go for the classic Frito pie, delicious, and I can just barely finish it. Of course, the main reason to visit here is for the hot dogs! Robin is awesome! She is always friendly and has an encouraging word if you are having a less than stellar day. I recommend the Weiner Wagon heartily, especially if you love great hot dogs and reasonable prices!

Yelp
Love this place been going here for about 20 years when the old man used to run it and his wife made homemade cookies he's gone now but his love of good fast and a good price lives on
google avatar

Brant G.

Yelp
Great food, low wait times, and The lady that works here is awesome, and it is not expensive!
google avatar

Kelly G.

Yelp
Went here for the first time with a coworker about a month ago and didn't realize they were cash only. The lady said she would front us the food if we wanted to come pay her back within the week. Could not believe how nice she was. Food was pretty good, especially for how cheap of a meal it is. Got a regular hot dog with the basic fixings. Was so astonished by how kind she was that we went back the next day, bought more and gave a hefty tip.
google avatar

Melynda D.

Yelp
Just love this place. Doesn't hurt it's a block from work. Always always smiling. Great food for a very reasonable cost. She has a great returning customer clientele. That says something!!!
google avatar

Isabella C.

Yelp
I love this lady!!! I stumbled upon her wagon hungover as hell and told her about how I was feeling. she offered me this hangover dog they do for one of her regulars. I say hell ya and when I didn't have enough change to pay for it she gave it to me anyway. she's such a g, I'm grateful for this hot dog, and I will be going back! (the hot dog is actually making me feel better too which is amazing) thank u so much!!
google avatar

Marie K.

Yelp
I love the Frito Pie. I work right by here so it's always quick and Robin is so friendly!

Yelp
He was doing his Cart years before it was COOL. Best fast in town. Great chili dogs, the best ever .....

Jackie K.

Yelp
The Wiener Wagon has never failed for over 30 years. Used to go there with my Dad. Brings back many a fond memory. Love this original food cart.
google avatar

Chuck L.

Yelp
This hot-dog cart shows up on the SE corner of 12th and Main during the heart of weekdays. You won't find a better dog in the city, unless it's on a leash.
google avatar

Megan D.

Yelp
I ate a wiener at this wagon. I am not a big eater. I had a plain dog with ketchup and a coke. It was delicious and less than $2.00. I would do the same thing again.
google avatar

Zachary E.

Yelp
If you've only got 15 minutes & $5 in pocket for lunch swing by the Wiener Wagon, most expensive item is $4, please don't get me wrong this is not one of those 'you get what you pay for' situations. The dogs are piled high w/ your choice of toppings and the wiener of better quality than most hot dog carts I've eaten. I'm still full from a 1pm lunch (now 5pm).
google avatar

Nalina B.

Yelp
Fantastic hotdogs always! Fresh and hot and delectable. Too bad they're not open weekends.
google avatar

Sheila H.

Yelp
I'm giving this place a 5 star because of the owner...And the basic hot dog. I never go downtown but today I had an appointment. I saw the food truck when I pulled up and knew that when I came out I was going to have to try it. I put my money in the parking meter and went to the appointment. When I finished, I went to the truck and asked if they took debit cards...Sigh, they don't. The owner then said, what do you want? I looked at her like she was an alien...I'm sorry, I don't have any cash...That's OK she said, pay me next time you're here. I was flabbergasted! People don't do that! Do they? Well, I wanted a dog so started looking in my wallet, she kept insisting but I have a hard time taking something when I know I can pay for it. I found a buck seventy-five in change. I ordered the basic and she wanted me to have a drink too, thank you nice lady, but I just can't. The hot dog was really good and juicy, the right amount of condiments. She made my day, looking for a job is hard, and when you have someone this nice, well, I must admit I cried a little. Going back real soon to not only pay her the rest, but to try something else in the menu. You gotta try this place.
google avatar

Big S.

Yelp
Guy behind me recommended the Killer Works. I got it. Everything was on it: onions, chili, Frito's, lettuce, sour kraut, sour cream, mustard, jalapenos, and more. Great owner running the show.
google avatar

Joseph J.

Yelp
One of the last bastions of getting more than what you paid for! You can get in and out for under five bucks including drink maybe a bit more for the tip (WHICH YOU SHOULD!) I'm a big eater and one of the bigger bowls does the trick! You can get a regular dog here or get the bowl with piles of good fresh stuff on it. Good cheap date food before going to the cinema makes you look like you know secret stuff.
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
This little food truck, or wagon as it is, really brings the tastes of my youth back. The frito pie is amazing, or add a weiner of your choice to make it an Odie Pie. It's simple and inexpensive.
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
Was downtown and saw this dog wagon. How can you not love it? Had a fix for a good hot dog and this didn't disappoint. Prices fair as well. Bonus is your supporting a local business owner. Win win.
google avatar

Tripp G.

Yelp
Just moved to Vancouver and finally had a couple minutes to burn downtown before an appointment. Stopped by the hut to get a dog and after talking to the owner for a little, she comped my first hot dog (it was my first time) and it was great! Had a regular dog with mustard, kraut, onions, and pineapple. It was pretty good. Wish they would've had more selection in the dogs and more pre-made menu items. They take care of their customers.

Lauren M.

Yelp
Perfect little hot dog stand. Prices on point and nice as apple pie! :) Delicious quality hot dogs, awesome taco salad, and frito pie My son's favorite lunch spot. Literally blocks away from the library, great for lunch after storytime!
google avatar

Eric F.

Yelp
Best hot dog stand I know! From the regular dog to hot link, great flavors, filling and at a price you can't beat anywhere I've been!
google avatar

Christopher M.

Yelp
Sooo good and the lady running the place is really cool. Cant go wrong here for a quick cheap lunch.
google avatar

Kacie R.

Yelp
The only thing I don't like about this food cart is that its not open more!! My mom, sister and I have been coming here since I was a kid. I try to make pocket dogs like this at home but they're just not the same!
google avatar

Ben P.

Yelp
Wow. Amazing flavor, great value, and most importantly this may be the friendliest food cart in town! Try it!

Dave D.

Yelp
I Love this place. The Food is Great and so well priced. I've been going here since 1976 and it's still Great. I remember when Skip used to go to garage sales and events on the weekends with the cart.

Steve K.

Yelp
Been eating at the Wiener Wagon since the late 1970's when Ray owned it! when I crave a hot dog, this is the first place I visit. They are exceptionally good (especially in pita bread) and exceptionally inexpensive! You can totally stuff yourself (at least I can!) with a dog, drink and chips for much less than 5 dollars. The Frito pie is probably the best I've ever had and I can barely finish it. If you're downtown on a weekday do give the Wiener Wagon a try!

Lacey W.

Yelp
FREAKING LOVE THE FRITO PIES! Have been getting them since high school and still love them
