Wellawatte Railway Station, located along Sri Lanka’s coastal railway line, is a small but busy transit point connecting commuters to Colombo and other southern destinations. Positioned near the bustling Wellawatte area, the station serves daily travelers, including office workers, students, and tourists exploring the coastline. The station’s location near the ocean provides scenic views, especially during train rides along the coast. However, the facilities are quite basic, with limited seating and minimal shelter, which can be inconvenient during bad weather. Train schedules can sometimes be unpredictable, with occasional delays during peak hours. Despite these challenges, Wellawatte Railway Station remains a convenient and affordable transport option for those traveling along the coastal route. Its proximity to shops, restaurants, and residential areas adds to its accessibility, making it a vital stop on Sri Lanka’s railway network.

This railway station is an iconic place in Colombo district because it's the last stop and the first stop going south and north within the district. But the station is dilapidated. Unkempt, dirty and dusty. Bills stuck on walls only in Sinhala language. Nothing in other languages given the notion many tourists arriving to watch the sunset. Passengers waiting for trains are inconvenient because the toilet doors always locked and one must trek to the office to pick up the keys for the door. The train time table is not accurate and its concealed inside the passengers seating are. The station needs complete overhaul. Solicitation is rampant.

This train station is bit isolated. But, crowded during office and school opening / closing times. Not all trains are stopped here. Only commuter town service trains stop here. If you are going to Wellawatta Beach, this is the best place to get down since the bus route is bit far from the beach.
