Nolensville West Coast-Style Burger Shack Is Closing | Eater Nashville

"I saw on Facebook that Burger Shack, a Cali-style, crowd-pleasing burger joint in Nolensville and the home of one of Nashville’s best burgers, will have its final day of service on Saturday, May 25, closing at 4 p.m. Its curiously similar take on an In-N-Out stacks patties with lettuce, tomato, onion, and spread, and its shack fries are slathered with cheese, grilled onions, and spread; a double cheeseburger combo with fries and a drink rings in at $8.75, one of the better burger prices in town. Eater has reached out to learn the reason for the closure, and the Facebook post said the owners are searching for a new Nashville-area location — check Burger Shack’s Facebook page and website for updates." - Delia Jo Ramsey

!!DO NOT EAT HERE!! !!BUYER BEWARE!! These folks are liars and thieves and they do not care about their customers. My wife heard they run a special on Mondays where you get a free kids meal when you buy an adult combo. When she called to clarify the manager said that deal was active. My wife ordered two adult meals and two kids meals. Apparently however the kids chicken tender meal is not part of that deal. The manager, knowing the deal she was wanting never told her it wasn’t included. When I picked up the meal and paid, what I expected to be approximately $25 before tip was $40.59 before tip. I told him I was confused because I expected the order to be much less. He then explained that he tried to tell my wife that the chicken wasn’t included but the phone was messing up. My wife states the phone call was perfectly clear and he made no attempt to explain this discrepancy. I asked for an itemized receipt and the manager told me he couldn’t print one. The receipt he printed me was just the total. The adult meals we ordered were two BBQ Burger meals. Their online ordering menu states at the very top of the burger section that their burgers come with lettuce, tomato, onion and special sauce. When we received our bbq burgers they only had about a tablespoon of bbq sauce on them, bacon and cheese. No additional toppings. Every single meal - kids meals and adult meals - were absolutely terrible. The burger patties were thin, dry, and extremely low quality. The bacon was that precooked, microwave garbage you get at the store. They were like warm, so much so that the cheese wasn’t fully melted. The Tater tots were soggy and cold. Kids meals were just as bad. Here are the meals we paid for and their totals. BBQ Bacon Burger with Tots -$16 (apparently tots cost more) BBQ Bacon burger with fries -$13 Kids chicken tenders $8 All before tax and tip. Check out the photos below and tell me if you think those meals are worth the cost. Now here’s where things go from bad to worse. I called the manager to explain how bad our experience was. I explained how the burgers didn’t have toppings even though the site said they would. I explained how the kids meal was supposed to be free but how he never said it wasn’t included I explained how my wife asked for clarification about the kids meal deal and he said it was an active deal. I explained how no part of our meal met the expectations set by their website or their phone call. Do you know what he said? He said, “Well I’m not sure how to make things right for you…” After going back and forth a bit I asked him. “If you were in my shoes, how would you want the restaurant to make things right? He avoided my question. 3 times. In the end, I asked for a refund because every item in my order was incorrect in some way. He said, “I can’t do that.” I pushed back. Eventually he agreed to refund the cost of the kids meal. However, he said I would have to drive back because he’s unable to provide a refund without the card present. I told him that modern POS systems are capable of that. He said he was unable. In the end, here’s what you should know. These crooks will say whatever they need to in order to overcharge you. After they give you horrendous food in return, they refuse to make it right. Worse, they play dumb, like they want to help but don’t know how? Or like they don’t know how they would want to be treated. In restaurants the rule should always be to treat customers the way you want to be treated. To serve them the quality of food that you would expect. At the price that you would expect. And if something goes wrong you should make things right. I’m never going back to this place. I suggest you don’t go either.

I ate here with kids and family for a weeknight dinner. We ordered the cheeseburgers, hot dogs, fries, onion rings, and milkshakes. Nobody, not even the kids could get past the first taste of the milkshakes. Every one (5) were liquid and the flavors were off. One family member poured the ketchup bottle over their cheeseburger and the only thing that came out was liquid so he didn’t end up eating his burger. Spend your money elsewhere if you want authentic American food.

We tried a new place my husband heard about that is supposed to give an “in-and -out” burger vibe to Tennessee. We had an errand to run up north so on the way back we stopped in Nolensville for lunch. Now you have to understand I’m indifferent to In-and Out. I was born and raised in San Diego and I’ve grown up with them and have a lot of my inner circle that love them and know all the secret menu stuff! I’ve been there more times than I can count but because I was with someone else. I don’t go there on my own. So I actually thought West coast burgers were better! But that is a personal preference. So don’t come at me! lol! We also had the onion rings which I really liked and they had a lot of other menu items I would like to try! We were also served by a really nice guy which was either the owner/co-owner of the place. The decor was reminiscent of a lot of places from back home and I could see it being a fun hang out. I would definitely recommend giving them a try!

My wife and I are definitely regular customers here! We get food at least once a week and love it every time. Always friendly and always asking how we feel about the food to ensure we still enjoy it! Highly recommended, definitely a great burger!

Google
I had a fantastic experience at West Coast Burgers & Dogs. The food was fresh, flavorful, and made with care. The hot dog was perfectly grilled and topped just right, and the burgers were juicy and satisfying. The staff was friendly and quick, and the place was clean and welcoming. I highly recommend this spot if you’re craving a solid burger or a classic dog. Great value for the price!

This restaurant is my favorite type. It's owned and managed right here, not some large corporate entity. Most times I have visited, the owner was running the register, watching over and taking account of store issues. In my most recent visit, the manager came to my table to tell me the fountain drink I requested has been changed. I believe most other businesses would have taped a piece of paper reading OUT OF ORDER on it. Not here. The decor is a multi colored "California concept", which doesn't do much. The lobby/main room is surprisingly dark. This is contested by the atrium. It is extremely bright and loaded with colorful picnic tables, that seem appropriate for a celebrating baseball team or birthday party. And the burgers are great for that birthday environment as well. Normally I would talk about the food first, but in this case I thought it needed context. It's a quite simple menu, I'm sure they will customize it but it's a basic hamburger/cheeseburger. The kind that kids like and won't complain about. It's a small thing, but my only complaint is that the delicious burgers are not huge... Again, twelve year old kid sized. But small compared to gourmet burgers we've become accustomed to. The prices are reasonable and they are rarely busy when I've stopped in. So please, take a look in to see what a business looks like when run by someone who cares and counts on his customers.

12:00 on a Saturday I was the only one there. Girl at the register was more interested in chomping her gum and her iPad. I ordered a cheeseburger to go. As I waited over 20 for the burger, I noticed the restaurant did not look clean. The man in the back was talking on the phone instead of fixing my food. When I finally got my burger it was a tiny patty with 2 pieces of iceberg lettuce and 1/2 a slice of tomato. I ate a few bites and threw the rest away. Now I know why I was the only one in there.

Google
I’ve been here twice. Both for a dog and a burger combo. The hot dog was long, thick and juicy. Absolutely delicious on a nice soft bun. 10” of perfection. This visit, I’m having the double cheeseburger with grilled onions. Reminded me so much of In-N-Out burger on the West Coast but was a bit better. Fries were different than In-N-Out but great. Burger was piping hot as well as fries. Grilled onions were cooked perfectly and bun had been put on grill. Highly recommend this little gem.

Yelp
Great burgers and fries, delicious shakes and the nicest people working there! We Highly recommend it!

Yelp
I'll start by saying the service was absolutely excellent. Very attentive and friendly, checking in to make sure everything was good. So that was a good start. As noted in other reviews, this place definitely feels like they are trying to replicate In-N-Out Burger. The burger is reasonably close, and they offer french fries with an option for what amounts to "animal style". The fries aren't fresh cut though, so they felt a bit lackluster. The burger was good, but not great. Overall the restaurant seemed clean, but I'm still very concerned about cleanliness in the kitchen. The entire time I was eating I had to bat away small flying insects (perhaps gnats or fruit flies?). I made a stop at the bathroom before leaving, and it was absolutely swarming with the same insects. Gross. It made me really worry what the kitchen looked like, and will certainly keep me from going back. I was hoping for better. The service deserved five stars. The fries were a three at best, and the burger probably earned four stars. But the insects were a deal-breaker so three stars feels a little generous.

Yelp
Burgers are angus beef. Bun is good looks like a bakery bun. I asked for a double cheeseburger with bacon crispy and grilled onions. Fries could have been crispier. So not great. It was clean the guy behind the counter was very nice and personable.

Yelp
Great burgers and fries at a reasonable price. Service was prompt and the local owners are very friendly and attentive. Menu has many options, more than the name implies. Im going back to try the Philly Cheese steak..looks tasty.

Yelp
My husband and I were excited to try this place, and we and ordered two double-double burgers, a diet coke, and a large tater tots. Instead of making it a combo, the cashier charged each item individually - $3 for the soda and $6.50 for the tater tots, which ended up being almost $10, whereas the upcharge for a combo would have been only $5. When we first asked for a receipt to inspect the charges, the cashier gave us the kitchen ticket with no charges listed. When we asked again, he was dismissive and it seemed like he was trying to avoid the confrontation, saying, "You want another one?" Well, the first one wasn't even a receipt, bro. When we asked about the charges, he explained that combos only apply to small fries or tater tots, not large. But logically, you'd expect to pay an upcharge for a larger size while still getting the combo deal since we ordered a drink. He didn't explain this upfront, which felt sneaky. It definitely left a bad impression and a bad taste in our mouths. In the end, we paid $30 for two burgers, one order of tater tots, and a soda. For that price, we could have had two full combos. Ridiculous. We left feeling overcharged and undervalued. Definitely won't be returning.

Yelp
Was working near by figured I'd check this place out and I'm glad I did the burger was amazing I will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
The food was amazing, the service was really cool the guy was so polite. And the scenery reminded me of childhood

Yelp
Should have gotten a clue when my wife and I walked in on a Friday at 5:30PM and we were the only two there. One person working and quiet as can be. Burgers and fries were ok, but not that great. For a double cheeseburger combo with a coke it was $12.00. For a fast food place it was a bit much. I upgraded to a chocolate shake and my wife had a hotdog combo with a coke and it was $30.00 for both meals. Once again, a bit much in my opinion. $20.00 I could understand, but it was not a sit down restaurant quality experience. Won't be visiting here again. We should have went down the street and had pizza, or across the street for wings and had a better experience, not to mention for less money. That would be my suggestion for anyone looking to find a meal in this area.

Yelp
Burgers taste fresh! The staff is amazing! The service is on the spot! All of it at a low price.
google avatar

Graham T.

Yelp
Deserves three stars for food, but five stars for incredibly kind employees, so I'm giving it four stars. We ordered and the food came out fast. One party member's order was incorrect, and the mistake was fixed immediately and we didn't have to pay extra for the burger. The burgers are thin and lack unique flavor, but they're still all right. Just don't expect anything special. The fries are pretty good, though.

Yelp
Visiting from California and we came across this restaurant on Yelp. The photos were very reminiscent of In n Out so we had to try. Their version of the Animal Style Fries were spot on. Honestly just as good especially if you like thicker cut fries. The burger was nothing like In n Out, however the burger was perfect. The buns were toasted which added a nice crunch to the burger alongside the lettuce and tomato. The Nashville Chicken sandwich was really good also. The highlight was definitely the fries. The service was good no complaints from me. The ambiance of the restaurant was quiet, which was a nice change from actually In n Out where the dining room is always crowded. Thank you for the good meal :)

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
Great place for fresh American food! The special sauce was delicious and the west coast fries amazing. Food came and quickly and we will definitely be back! Thank you

Leonel C.

Yelp
I would put a zero if I could. The hot dogs are literal school food being served and same thing about the fries. Customer service is good but the food is horrible.

Jasmine C.

Yelp
The food is so yummy! especially their milkshakes 10/10 recommend! The restaurant was very clean. my favorite thing though was how friendly everyone who works there is! They are so genuine and kind! will definitely be eating here more!

Jay M.

Yelp
First I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich and then when I received my order it smelled extremely rotten causing the man sitting next to me to comment on the smell. The chicken was dark grey even looking spoiled. I notified the man working and his response made me think he was aware of the issue. Before I could leave he brought me a breaded chicken sandwich and it honestly had a light faint smell like maybe it was cooked in the same oil. Onion rings poured hot oil out of them all over when I bit into one. No disrespect to the establishment but that's the first and last time I will go there. Do better, even it costs you to throw a bag of rotten meat away.
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
I'm taking away one star only because both times we've been here the whole entire place smells strongly of sanitizer. Such a turn-off when you want to eat. However, the cheeseburgers are an incredible In-N-Out dupe. It's a fantastic fix for all of us California transplants. Next time we'll just do a to-go order and enjoy their delicious burgers at home.

Kelly G.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious and fresh food... I highly recommend the Philly cheesesteak... One of the best I've ever had! The owner is always so friendly and gracious!
google avatar

Davis C.

Yelp
The prices have gone up a lot from what previous people have posted. A combo is $4.75 and the single cheese is 5.49 It just wasn't what I expected. Very little meat and just was fair. Always happy to support small business but will not be going back. The guy at the front was really sweet and personable.
google avatar

Bernice R.

Yelp
Came here on a Wednesday evening after reading the reviews about good the burgers are and how they taste similar to in n out. Although for me it did not taste like that, I personally loved the food! Burgers were cooked fresh, and fries were really good too. Service was friendly. I do wish they had a drive thru, we will be coming back for sure.

Daniel G.

Yelp
Like a burger from the store and made yourself. Nothing special and nothing great, average. Food services should elevate not make me want to stay home.
google avatar

Brad H.

Yelp
The grilled cheese is full of cheese and toppings. The burger is very much similar to In and Out and the perfect size and flavor combo- just like the classic. Very welcoming and appreciative service. Highly recommend this great local business.
google avatar

Nathan S.

Yelp
My family and I stopped here on the way to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital. The food was fast and delicious. The customer service was amazing and delightful. Also, it was reasonably priced.
google avatar

Ken J.

Yelp
Pretty average. With four burger places on this mile stretch, I can see myself coding this one again. Too bad, they have outdoor seating. Burger was okay. Griddled pressed burger. It was fine. Onion on it was ridiculous. Wife and I both had to remove the majority of it. About the size of a CD and solid. Special sauce was a miss for me. Tasted of sweet relish. Not a burger topping I choose. Loaded fries were strange. Between the carmalized onions and the special sauce they were very sweet. Jalepenos didn't add enough great to offset. They have Pepsi.... Just not good enough for me to revisit.

John M.

Yelp
The family running this place is super nice, but unfortunately this place is on the decline unless they can turn things around! The ketchup & mustard containers are gross, they need to be washed, sanitized, and refilled. I knew the original owner, who made this food a dead-ringer for In 'N Out Burger. I'm not sure these new owners get that, the food is slipping, cheese not even melted on the burgers or fries properly, yuck. Please Google pictures of In 'N Out for proper food presentation, unless they are taking this place in a different direction, which would be a mistake. I will still give them a chance and hope things improve!
google avatar

Lonny N.

Yelp
Takeout dinner at West Coast Burger and Dog in Nolensville, TN. A great classic cheeseburger, fries, onion rings, and shakes! Rating is a bit lower due to the fries needing to be hotter when picked-up. Still good, but better when hot.

Cade J.

Yelp
Best west coast burgers in the area and my go-to for an easy dinner! Staff is always friendly and they have gluten free options if needed.
google avatar

Dave D.

Yelp
We have lived in TN now for 18 months and this place is the closest option to In N Out by far!! It was GREAT!! I ordered the "Double-Double" and it was like being home.....so stoked!
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
Won't eat here again. Was charged $17 for a dbl cheese combo and because I wanted west coast fries another $4 was added. I asked why i was charged $4 for a combo and an additional $4 for west coast fries they said because the fries were an upgrade. Yeah so charge a little extra. Would have saved money if i just ordered everything separately instead of saying a combo. What a joke. I'll stick with hwy 55

Josh H.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! Everyone is always so sweet and pleasant to talk to. It's a very chill environment to sit and eat in. And the food is always top notch. I drive all the way from Murfreesboro to eat here when I'm craving in n out. Or when I want just a good solid burger, I know I can come out here and get a consistently good one.
google avatar

D D.

Yelp
Less then good. Nothing special here. Fair at best. Service was fair as well. Good fair. This could be a great place if ran correctly. Ambiance has potential but just not utilized.
google avatar

JaQuande J.

Yelp
I like going here when I'm in the area. I like the hamburger that is loaded! All my friends go here too! All these people complain about how expensive it is, but everyone has raised their prices! I went to McD and got a Big Mac and med fries and it was $8.47! I'd rather eat here, than to choke down Mickey D!

Dede K.

Yelp
Read a lot of reviews about "in n out" burger dupes. Waited over 25 minutes for a very average burger. Honestly tasted like a frozen patty, nothing special about it. There were only 2 other families in the business, it was dead. Owner was very nice. Service at the counter was bad.
google avatar

Caterina I.

Yelp
I honestly had a pretty good takeout experience here! I called my order in ahead of time and came to pick up. Of course, WC Burgers & Dogs is known for making burgers that resemble a very famous west coast burger chain. I would say the food is a nice nod to that style. The fries here are thicker than the other burger chain, but I honestly like that better because they don't get soggy. I believe all the burgers come with the "west coast sauce" by default, so I ordered my cheeseburger with the grilled onions. I also ordered the WC fries (ahem, *animal style*). I liked that the chopped grilled onions really resemble the kind you get from the other chain! Food was delicious and very reasonably priced, and I'm glad this little gem is still around in Nolensville, even though there are about 4 or 5 other burger restaurants around this area.
google avatar

Fallon C.

Yelp
Love eating at this place! The prices are good. This is the closest you will get to In-N-Out without being in Cali. The place is always clean. The service is wonderful! Definitely will be back.
google avatar

Frank S.

Yelp
This place makes good old fashioned burgers and fries. It's small and a little out of the way but my family and I drive 25 minutes there to enjoy the food and chat with the sweet family who owns/works there. The owner is also the cook and does a great job of taking care of you.

Jennifer F.

Yelp
Reminds of an In & Out meets beach side burger joint. Food is fresh and authentic. Their special sauce is great! Customer service is excellent.

Linda W.

Yelp
The best place if you're craving in-n-out style food!! The sweetest owners and great hot dogs!!

Lisa A.

Yelp
This place is SO good! As a California native, I have been missing In n Out. I heard of this place and had to try it and it did NOT disappoint. I had the double cheeseburger with west coast fries. It was everything I wanted it to be and more. The fries were fresh and there were a lot of them, even in the small size. The burger was cooked perfectly and the bun was perfectly toasted. The sweet man that works the register let us know they were having a special and serving Greek gyros so my husband ordered one with lamb. That was also fantastic. Great pita and delicious, flavorful lamb. I would definitely recommend this place if you're looking for a good burger or even a good gyro. I have tried many burgers in the past 5 years that I've lived here and this is, by far, my favorite. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Erin J.

Yelp
We really love West Coast! It's definitely reminiscent for us of a burger we'd get out in California. We've only had take out due to the pandemic but the staff is always kind. Sometimes it's a little slow, but I think it's due to them being short staffed. Be patient with smaller businesses during this time as they navigate these unprecedented waters. Oh, and get the cheese fries.

Siraj M.

Yelp
Amazing food and great customer service, loved the burgers and west coast fries Highly recommended.
google avatar

Susan S.

Yelp
Used to love this place. Really gone downhill on quality. Avoid the Wings. Entirely not worth the price they charge, no seasoning, and tasted undercooked. Stopped eating after first one. They had more skin than meat. Got a side salad that was awful too. There was more onions and carrots than lettuce. Oh, and your dressing selection is just RANCH. Wasted $12 bucks and 30 minutes of lunch break on this place. If you try this place don't recommend venturing anything on the menu but a burger. Last time I'm coming here.
google avatar

Drew P.

Yelp
This place replaced my favorite burger joint in the Nolensville area which was Burger Shack. West Coast burgers are just as good. I would highly recommend; the food was great. It's making its own way and not copying Burger Shack. I would also recommend their Oreo milkshake, it was really good. However the last one seem to have more vanilla than actual Oreo but I think if you ask for extra Oreo it works out really well.
google avatar

Rick B.

Yelp
OK so 15 years since we moved from AZ and this place finally gives us something close to that other burger place 'out' there! Simple menu with lots of options and prices can't be beat! Proves you don't have to charge $10 for a decent burger, we're talking $5-6 bucks for most options. Only reason it isn't a full 5 stars is the tables and benches could be in better shape, especially the ones outside, you'd think with demand for outside seating so high a little more attention to that would be in order. We couldn't even sit there because they were dirty and not in very good shape. Hope this place survives in the 'jungle' of other options in the area! Definitely a repeat place!

Kellie D.

Yelp
Don't listen to the bad reviews, this place is the best! The food is made fresh-to-order, the family who owns and managing the restaurant is precious, and everything is delicious! I recommend the Grilled Chicken Sandwich with French Fries. My two preschoolers love it too! They are picky eaters but always clean their plates when we come here. Give it a try!
google avatar

Shelley R.

Yelp
We've passed here many times but decided to grab a quick lunch today. The good: Owner was working the register and he was friendly and efficient. We both ordered hot dogs and fries. Both the actual hot dog and bun were very good and fresh. The bad: the fries tasted freezer burned. The chili on mine was fine but the entire thing was drenched in an awful artificial cheese sauce. They couldn't just sprinkle on a bit of real cheese? The tab for 2 hotdogs and fries, no drinks was $16.97. I wish we had gone to Sonic. It world have been better and cheaper.
google avatar

Fifi L.

Yelp
I'm not looking for a replica of In-N-Out, but this place definitely satisfies my craving for the best burger in the West. For those complaining about onions, ask for grilled ones. My only sadness is that they serve Pepsi products and that's not really much to complain about since there's Dr. Pepper!
google avatar

Alyssa G.

Yelp
Would you pay extra for this burnt bacon? I think NOT. The quality of this simple burger has gone down since it's new management. I'm highly disappointed because I used to love this place.

Rozella B.

Yelp
Being from California we wanted to try this place out didn't disappoint! Good burgers !
google avatar

Nancy S.

Yelp
Burger Shack is gone but was replaced by a great burger joint. Reasonable price. Friendly employees. Only down side was the loaded "supreme" fries were topped with sliced (cold) cheese. Burgers were delicious. We'll be back!
