The 22 Best Dive Bars in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"Perched right at the top of the street leading into Tourmaline Surf Park, West End Pub has been holding it down for locals and surfers since 1979. It’s the kind of classic neighborhood dive where the beer is cold and the regulars are always ready to slide over and make room. Inside, you’ll find televisions tuned to whatever game’s on, a few solid pool tables, darts, and a rotating lineup of weekly food pop-ups. Add in daily drink specials and friendly staff, it’s easy to see why people keep coming back. The bartenders and regulars will treat you like family–unless you prove you are not." - Kelly Bone

Google
Awesome brunch spot! Food came out fast & delicious! Honestly avoided this spot at first because it seemed super fancy & expensive— but the menu & vibe is very approachable, and you get an excellent value for awesome food. Coffee was surprisingly rich & really good! (*Not* watered down diner coffee) Beautiful waterfront view of Torrey State Reserve area! Definitely will be back!

Google
The structure is a dive bar but when the Soft soap generation overwhelms at night, they kinda ruin it. Couple real people, many fakes IMO.

Google
Great bar, awesome patio outside and the overall vibe is always fun. Younger crowd. Giving it 4 stars bc they really need to acknowledge the bathroom situation. For the guys theres 1 toilet. My gf said the same for the women and that’s outrageous, people gotta go when they drink!

Jerome Cooper

Google
This is a great place to hangout and enjoy a brew. Lot of locals hangout frequently and the servers are all amazing. I highly recommend checking out this venue if you are in the area.

Google
A cool little dive bar at the north end of Pacific Beach. They have a couple pool tables, a decent selection of beer, quite a bit of liquor, and a friendly staff. Not too much more to say!

Google
The bartender Jose Sanchez mentioned in his honest review name is “Trevor “ I’ve observed how he helps and treats all others why it a coincidence that he treats Mexicans with ignorance and rudeness what do you think he should keep his job regardless he is lucky he hasn’t done this to the wrong person be careful Trevor you’ve been lucky so far don’t push it!

Yelp
Gr8 place to hang out, chill out, shoot some schtick, talk to some beautiful babes. They have a burger person stop by on occasion to offer up some scrumptious burgers at a reasonable price. All staff is chill, friendly and helpful. They got a jukebox to help pass the time and a good selection of beer & tequila. Cruise by and say hey

Yelp
I've been coming to this bar since I was 21. It's always a great time. It can get a little cramped and crowded, but I always enjoy myself. The drinks are delicious and the crowd is a group of fun people .

Yelp
Super!! ....Fun, loud, and everything I expect a neighborhood dive bar to be. I walked over around midnight with friends and a dog, and let me tell you, everyone was so nice! There's a wee bit too much going on inside, with multiple pool tables and dart boards. It's cramped, hard to get to the bar, and difficult to navigate to the restroom. That said, the patio is where it's at. It's dog friendly, with biscuits and water bowls set out. Oh and besides lots of tables and chairs, there was a snack table. There's a very homey and backyard-like vibe going on. One huge thing to note is, if cigarette smoking offends you, this would not be a place for you. I didn't really know anyone yet randoms stopped to talk to me (I must disclose that I was in charge of the leash and it was mostly about the cute pups, who is a total chick magnet, but still...) Overall, a great place to nightcap! Pros: - ambience - patio - open late - workers kept the place tidy of empty bottles and glasses - dog friendly Cons: - restroom situation - difficult to navigate inside area

Yelp
This is to let the owner of West End Bar in North PB know your 2 male bartenders are stealing / robbing you blind . Feb 10th 2024 , Saturday from 9pm - 1030pm. We are 4 people who are locals and live 2 blocks away from your bar. Your 2 bartenders are charging different prices for the same exact drinks ordered This happened several times within an hour. Paying cash they pretend to ring it up and put the cash into their tip bucket next to the cash register all four times. Also the female cooking burgers outside , on your menu listed $8 for the burger , will tell you it's $11 total , so she is also robbing you blind. That's a whole crew of theif's, would not trust them with your credit/debit cards either. They would have a feild day. This place is not a dive bar , it is just plain and simple dirty from the employees to the restrooms and bar . Froggy's bar down the street and Silver Fox bar on Garnet ave, bars are pretty good .

Yelp
READ THIS BEFORE GOING HERE. Had the owner come up to a mentally disabled person, (me) to embarrass, discriminate, and ask me to politely leave because of my ADA service dog being on the floor. She said she cannot have any dog in here on the floor because there may be broken glass/liability.. #1. A service dog cannot be held. That would make it not a service dog. #2 has it been months since you've cleaned the floor? When glass shatters does no one mop/clean it up? I've never seen a glass shatter in silence... is that a usual nightly occurrence here to where no one does anything? But I understand, a mentally disabled person cannot go out to bars/restaurants I learned tonight for the first time. This poor owner has no idea that this was the biggest mistake of her life. ADA LAW.

Yelp
Come on! How does one not rate Westy five legit stars? Drinks are cheap, crowds are minimum. Day drinking feels good here. Late night it's THE PLACe To go. It skews younger at night. Days are locals. All times people are accepting and nice. Jen the owner is an absolute boss babe and she runs the place wonderfully. Love Westy

Yelp
Amazing bar right near the beach! We rode our bikes from Mission bay in 7 mins and had a blast! Pool, darts, golden tee. All the necessary good times at this spot!!!!! Thank you. Keep up the great vibes

Yelp
Fun locals joint!! Great feel and fun atmosphere. Awesome drink prices. Surf stories galore. Lovely bike ride from Pacific Beach.

Yelp
Great place for a drink and to watch a game. Great selection of booze and beer at great prices. Pool table and dart boards. Jukebox (touch tunes) is always playing a great mix. The crowd changes throughout the day and is no longer the West End of old.

Jojo K.

Yelp
Best bar, best people, best staff, best drink deals, most fun. Careful it's a slippery slope of fun (and pool)

Yelp

Yelp
Another great dive in PB/La Jolla. I can't say I never ate here, but I remember everything being cheap. Took a date here and did not close the deal though. Fun spot tho! Great people and darts and pool!

Yelp
This place is cool, a lot of fun if your trying to play pool. Nice outdoor smoking patio. Everyone there is generally having fun and the staff is nice. Except one skinny dude who wears oversized shirts and low brimmed baseball hats. He is a bartender that took this place down 2 notches. I got one drink, went back up and said can "hey can I get a rum and coke and close out." He goes away, comes back with the bill. I'm like okay. So I catch his attention and say "hey I actually..."before I could finish he yelled EXTREMELY loudly that "You already f*coin closed out". Everyone kinda looked away and I was like Um? Okay. I left the building, feeling verbally assaulted.

Yelp
I came here with my boyfriend and about 30 minutes into the night he got food poisoning from the pad thai place across the street. He called an Uber home and I wasn't ready to go, so I stayed and had a few cocktails, the bartender was extremely welcoming. Not only did they pour me a free shot but they also gave me a phone number to call in case I wanted to take my party to the next level, naturally I did. When I closed out my tab they also gave me a blowjob shot to take! They even took a video to send to my boyfriend. Vibes 10/10 Friends 11/10. Not only did I make great memories but friends for life. I actually invited the bartenders over for a BBQ on Sunday to meet my boyfriend! Love it here

Benjamin F.

Yelp
Bartender gave someone else my card when they closed their tab. How do you do that? They had jenga. That was fun

Yelp
This is a dive bar as dive bars go. The food is terrible and they own it; they serve Moulson beer, which is a rare find in the states; there are only a couple beers on tap; they've got plenty of games such as a large connect 4 and darts; there are always plenty of regulars who look at you funny if you aren't one of them. If you like dives, this is your place.

Yelp
As dive bars go, this is a pretty good one. I came by the West End on Christmas day and enjoyed a lager and a baked pretzel with a side of honey mustard. They also had a small buffet table with chicken, chili, and tortilla chips for free with a purchase of a drink, but I stuck to my beer and pretzel. The lager was good but I did feel it should be served a little colder than it was (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/west-end-san-diego?select=9j5eU80kWJJM4c9CFvN8og#WFMiiQXtF_YbBNviWr9pmg). The pretzel was okay. It tasted good and I always appreciate the rock salt on top of these, however it was not as moist and soft as others I have had (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/west-end-san-diego?select=9j5eU80kWJJM4c9CFvN8og#9j5eU80kWJJM4c9CFvN8og). It was a little tough. After munching down on my pretzel I chatted with the female bar keep a bit and she was nice. Full of energy would be a good way to describe her. The bar has pool tables, dart boards, and provide free WiFi which is a big plus. On the small but appropriate menu for a dive bar, they also make sandwiches. For now, a solid 3.5 stars or upper end because of that free WiFi, and be sure to serve colder beer!

Francesca L.

Yelp
We live right down the street and frequent West End. It's our go-to spot to watch the game. They have great drink prices, a pool table and darts, and an overall great atmosphere. This bar is filled with a variety of age groups, which always makes it a fun time!
google avatar

Yelp
This place has been around a long time. The customers are locals and they've been patronizing the bar for years. Super-friendly staff. The owner really cares about the customers and will do anything needed to keep people coming back.
google avatar

Casey S.

Yelp
Love you Dave Shaw!!!! Best bartender at West End. See you Thursday :P I love playing pool at this bar with my fiancé!
google avatar

Tami L.

Yelp
This is one of those places that you drive by for years and just never stop in to check out until one of your wild and crazy girlfriend's invites you out for drinks here on a Thursday night. It's a dive bar and everything a local, neighborhood dive bar should be. Affordable drinks and just people who are unpretncious hanging out and having a good time. Looking forward to stopping in here again.

Yelp
Great drinks, ok people. If your in the mood with the right crowd, this place is AWESOME!!!! And worth five stars. If you're not, well, you suck, but then give it one star. Sooooo, for now, I give it three stars, but expect that to improve soon.

James J.

Yelp
We were a party of 3 for takeout and that probably contributed to this restaurant's ratIng of only 2 stars. The Clam Chowder was on point, the Crab Cake delicious and the Calamari lived up to what I'd been told, it was so good. Now for what could have been better - the Angus Burger wasn't impressive and to add insult to injury they added cheese when I told them not to add it - I requested mustard and there wasn't any and the fries were the absolute worst, no flavor and they were cold.

Lorne C.

Yelp
Love this bar! A staple on La Jolla Blvd. I love the addition of the patio as it brings such a cool atmosphere to an already awesome place. I always make it a point to swing by when I'm in SD.
google avatar

Laniel D.

Yelp
Saw a review for "PVs" so I had to try it. I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED. This is the spot to start and end your night out in PB.
google avatar

Destany K.

Yelp
I presume that the only reason this place gets good reviews is because most people haven't been to an authentic dive bar. I mean, this place is in La Jolla. Look, it is divey, the bartenders aren't pretty and they make stiff drinks, but it still kind of sucks. One of the reasons I say this is because I asked for a dirty martini and he made it with Vodka. For a dive bar I would expect for them to ask if I wanted Gin, which I did thankyouvery much. Also, I wasn't a fan of the crowd. They didn't appear to be the typical "cool dive bar people" that I'm used to. They seemed a little stuck up. Really? I think I'll pass next time and stick to my Blarney Stone Pub in Caliremont.
google avatar

Zach V.

Yelp
Some people have a different view of a "dive" bar then I do. I'm from the Philly area and a dive around here is dimly lit, not too clean and has professional drinkers nestled at the bar. We were there the weekend before Halloween and it was packed. I know this might not normally be the case. Most of the people there were young and I didn't see any seedy characters.
google avatar

Avelino C.

Yelp
Well what do you expect from a dive bar that's been around forever. All the furniture is smelling of the past. Tobacco and beer stained pool tables. The smell of hard liquor imbedded in the upholstery. The aroma of drunken fools and merriment of the past permeating from the premises. Bartenders with old stories and new bottles of alcohol. A mix of well-to-do younger patrons and "never have done well" older wants to. It's fun to visit places like this to remind you how important life is what is important in life. Yelp Now that I have been yelping for a while, I realize what a cool application this really is. Yelp has become my "go to" site whenever I go to new city around the world. I've also been able to communicate with yelp friends from around the world whenever I travel to a new city in order to get advice of where to eat and also for business information. Yelp is also a great way to keep track of your past experiences and it has become a digital record of where I have been and how much I enjoyed those locations. Yelp is also really great place to connect with people in your own town to see what is going on and what is fun and which restaurants are new and exciting. Try it, you may very well enjoy becoming a yelper also.

Yelp
London's West End Between PB and La Jolla. Friday December 3, 2010 3 Stars I hate cash bars because I always want to drink more than the cash I have on me (even when I prepare to go to a cash bar). Plus its just bad business. As I get drunker, I want to drink more and buy other people drinks. For example, the last time I went to the night owl I spent $150 there's no way I have that much cash on me at the bar or at any other given time. They have a ATM but thats a huge deterrent for my drinking habit. I have a hard enough time getting money out of an ATM when I am sober. After I run out of cash, I don't want to read and especially not in Spanish. The bar itself looks super dive-y but it was really crowded. The drinks were not cheap and not strong unless you are a chick. Then you are going to get hammered. When I gave money to a beautiful girl to buy me a drink, it was twice as strong as my two previous drinks combined. I do applaud them for this smart business practice. Get Chicks Drunk and deter douche-bag guys from getting belligerent. Or it could be that its a bar for guys to pick up "tipsy" girls while not being intoxicated themselves. *If you are girl who is into creepy guys named Todd or Creepy guys with beard, this is the place for you. Side Note #1: The pool table is only 50 cents a game but it really unbalanced and hard to play around all the people surrounding it. Side Note #2: Hey lady bartender, when I shake my empty glass in the air and then put it on the bar and gently slide it towards you, it does not mean just take my glass and never return. It means I want another drink! Side Note#3: There is late night hot dogs stand directly outside. They served it in a waffle cone with mashed potatoes deep fried and topped with chocolate sauce. Overall, I get the appeal of this place. Bring Cash!
google avatar

Jon R.

Yelp
Great neighborhood bar, filled with locals. They got two draft beers and most of the domestic cheap beer. Pool tables are $.75 per game and busy, you can meet new people by playing against the people who won the previous game. Hours are very consistent, some bars close when it gets slow but they are open to their specified close no matter what. This is my favorite SD bar (it doesn't hurt that it's less than a mile away from where I live).
google avatar

Connor L.

Yelp
This place was not my kinda dive bar. I was here St. Patty's 2012 and what a pit. It was loaded with bros and frats who thought this place was their own personal Frat House. The place reeked. They didn't accept cards. And there was no one where to lounge stand chill be. I've heard that they received a makeover from one of those reality shows but I don't know anyone who has been here. I'm sure not about to give it a go just to see. I doubt with any changes made this places clientele has improved so save your money and just go to someplace in PB. Ugh.
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Such a fun spot! It's local and easy going vibes plus they have fun games to play in the bar. My friends and I have a great time at this bar!
google avatar

Cheryl S.

Yelp
Love this place!! Such a relaxed atmosphere and the bartenders are the best! The drinks aren't too pricey and it's a fun crowd!! Will miss this place when I leave
google avatar

Van They L.

Yelp
The bartender was very friendly and kind. I went with my Mom to play pool and she made us a fresh pretzel. The drinks were strong and delicious, just how I enjoy them. The pool tables were not terribly dirty, however, they could use a little dusting. They have a bunch of TV's playing the sports and had really affordable food. For example a $6 panini sandwich with chips. Def. a dive bar.

Cecelia P.

Yelp
Fabulous and fun dive bar! Especially Trivia Night. Drinks are fairly priced and the crowd is also fun.

Amy K.

Yelp
Josh is the best bartender, plus he's witty and hot. Truth be told he's hotter with facial hair but I'm a Beardo Update: super comfy barstools with lumbar support . Oh and Cori is the bestest
google avatar

Yelp
THE BEST BAR IN THE WORLD. The West End is a legendary tavern located on the edge of La Jolla and Pacific Beach. Right up from Tourmaline Beach, so you can surf early and stop by for a brew. You will meet people from all over the world. All ages. All life stories. Famous because it was the bar of choice for Jack Macpherson, La Jolla mailman and Mac Meda Destruction Company CEO. Mac Meda integral part of Tom Wolfe's Pumphouse Gang. An additional plus, if you need a workman of ANY kind...electrician, plumber, computer tech, landscaper, contractor, realtor, nurse, painter...they're all there and will probably give you a good deal on their rates.
google avatar

Scott C.

Yelp
Sweet jesus, I can't believe no one has rated THE BEST BAR IN SAN DIEGO yet. Are you kidding me? There is no way in hell you can beat Teeth Optional! The West End has all of these unassailable attributes and more: - bartenders you would expect to find in the Yukon Territory during the gold rush of '49, but more haggard - $2 beam & cokes - equal quantities of really hot skanky PB chicks and AARP members - 75% chance of seeing two dipshits with diagonally-oriented Volcom hats fighting each other over some skank - beernuts - huge bar and no-bullshit bartenders who will tell a patron to beat it for the wrong attitude ...and of course the Mac Meda Destruction Company. Perhaps the best part is that it's technically in La Jolla, the most stuck-up, snooty, and downright bourgeois snobville this side of Rancho Santa Fe. If you haven't been to the West End, you probably think PB has no good bars. It does. One, exactly.
google avatar

Carolyn G.

Yelp
London's West End is by far one of the best dive bars in all of San Diego. I organize a Dive Bar group. We have been to 10 other locations in the last six months, and this was by far one of the best!! I think what makes it so fun is that there is plenty of room inside. Many dives are too small. We brought in a group of 35 and never felt cramped. Yet it's not so big, as to where you would feel like it's empty. The location seems random at first, but it's really not. It's just enough outside of PB, where it can be a true dive. They have two of everything: two pool tables, two dart boards, two Megatouch machines. The jute box was a bit random but we were able to find enough songs to play all night. The drinks are very very reasonably priced! And the bartender was awesome! Having a friendly bartender can make all the difference. Most dive bars are staffed by people who like that the bar never gets busy. At least half of the bartenders at the other 10 dives we've visited seemed openly annoyed when our 30 person group showed up. Haha! I am not even kidding. All in all, this is a great dive bar!! I will def be back!!!
google avatar

Lillian C.

Yelp
Place is a dive bar. Very crowded and a lot of drunks. Place to go if you want to party.
google avatar

Jeff C.

Yelp
Man alive! If you are rolling into this place it is because you are planning on getting your load on. Can't really think of much else to say about it... other than there are a lot of bushes near by to puke in. Been there, done that. Oh and there is a damn good taco shop a little ways away from here, never been to it sober, don't know if it is north, south, east, or west, and don't know the name. They have a 2 burrito combo that you and your friend can split for fairly cheap, so save a couple bucks in your shoe or something.
google avatar

Amber Elizabeth M.

Yelp
People may think ambiance, amenities like pool tables or a view, or location are what make a good bar into a good bar, but the truth of the matter is the Bartender makes the bar. A shitty bartender, a rude bartender, a slow bartender, a clueless bartender or a bartender that is just "too good" to serve you a drink and you've got a shitty bar. PJ at West End rocks my socks. He was fast, he acknowledged our presence immediately and came for our order as soon as he had finished the other drinks. He had a hustle that you don't see in most bartenders. Yes, you should respect your bartender, but it should be a mutual respect. All too often bartenders abuse their power. Sure, the guy who is waving money around being a DB at the end of the bar has probably led most bartenders to be the way they are, but it was refreshing to see PJ work. Keep up the good work sir, and I'll be back.
google avatar

Nick T.

Yelp
I dont understand how this is classified as a dive bar because I dont think it is. Well, maybe compared to whats around the area then I suppose it could be but bear in mind, this place is practically in La Jolla I used to come here when I worked in La Jolla and lived In PB. I liked it alot better than the PB bars, that I will admit to. It was also on the way home so I used to go often. Come on a Friday or Saturday night and its still packed with PB types sprinkled with older, more mature Bird Rock folks. This is another bar that opens really really early, like 6 am I think. Crazy. Its a cool bar. I do like it and theres a taco shop right next door. I cant remember if you could bring food in here or not.
google avatar

Paul P.

Yelp
If it is after midnight and you still want to grab a beer or a cocktail in North PB, this is the place. The only place. All the others are closed. We met a group of friends on a Friday night at the West End. We walked in and found a spot at the bar on the eastern part of the bar. We soon found out why the bar stools were unoccupied, every few minutes or so the people playing pool would need you to move so they could take a shot. After a while, we just moved around the corner. What a waste of prime bar space. By 11:00, the bar was pretty packed. They have upgraded the place in the last few months. They now take credit cards, have draft beer (Sculpin! Yum!), new carpet, new hdtvs and in general a new look. We drank beers but friends reported drinks were strong and tasty. Aside from the nonsensical placement of the pool table on the east side, we had a nice time. Besides, after midnight, it is the only place to go.
google avatar

Linda N.

Yelp
As far as neighborhood dive bars go, this is my haunt of choice. The drinks are poured with a heavy hand, but come without the hefty price tag. Bottled beer selections are decent, and even though I tell myself to order a different beer each time I go in, I just can't tear myself away from the Guinness (it comes in a bottle, so ask for a chilled glass). The two pool tables at each end of the bar are sure to keep you occupied. And if that isn't entertainment enough, their online juke box will do the trick. And if you find yourself the designated drive amongst a rowdy group of friends, don't be afraid to have some conversation with the staff (who won't be as drunk as your compadres). Each and every one of them is friendly, and has a great story to share. But remember: cash only! So leave the plastics at home.
