Historic Cemeteries in London

"Lesser known than some of London’s other “Magnificent Seven” Victorian era park-cemeteries, West Norwood holds some of the city’s most beautiful memorial monuments and some of its oldest trees. Once also known as the South Metropolitan Cemetery, the Gothic Revival burial ground is now part of English Heritage’s National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. The cemetery was built in 1832-41 during the establishment of new park-like burial grounds outside of the city limits. The site selected had once been the Great North Forest, by this time with only a few trees standing. Some of these ancient trees were left standing in the new cemetery, and have recently been dated back as far as the 16th century. Comprised of Kensal Green, Highgate, West Norwood, Abney Park, Nunhead, Brompton and Tower Hamlets cemeteries, the Magnificent Seven were created in 1832 as part of an effort to move burials out of the City of London in response to the twin pressures of health concerns about overcrowded church yard cemeteries and desires for buildable land in the rapidly expanding city. Like many of the city’s other cemeteries it was damaged by bombings during WWII, causing the destruction of the former Dissenter’s chapel and damage to other buildings and monuments. Today, ongoing restoration and stewardship work is overseen by Lambeth Council and is largely advised by the Friends of West Norwood Cemetery, who also host regular tours of the cemetery." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

One of the 'Magnificent Seven' Victorian cemeteries of London, and well worth a walk around. Entrance is at the junction of Norwood Road, Norwood High Street and Knights Hill. There is currently renovation work going on at the visitor centre at the entrance, and in the Greek enclosure at the back. Work will soon begin on the rose garden and to create two new entrances / exits in Robson Road and Hubbard Road. The pictures attached show these sites prior to these works starting.

Very beautiful cemetery. Lots of helpful signs for walkers and maps to indicate where you are in the premises. Beautiful Greek style graves and lovely history given behind the area. Highly recommend for a day walk to get some sun or on Halloween!

Part of the 7 magnificent cemeteries of London. Pleasantly surprised by its surroundings.

Well organized cemetery on a fairly big land. Many different types of graves including more than 100 y. old ones. It's particularly beautiful at spring time for the flourishing tree's. The part with the crypts inside the fences garden is one of my favourite parts. You can find it at the back of the cemetery. Also, the crematorium is an interesting part of it as well and recommended to see to have a complete idea about this place. It's a historical gem and well deserves to be preserved for the next generation.

Google
Victorian cemetery with a controversial and chequered history. Eminently Gothic with a diaspora of mausolea, crypts, sarcophagi, catacombs and monuments scattered over the gentle slopes amidst ancient trees. The crumbling Greek Necropolis is especially, evocative and sepulchral. Redolent, poignant and worthwhile.

Google
Absolutely disgraceful upkeep of this cemetery. The entrance & front of cemetery may be well kept but move to the back & it's just over run, no cutting back the grass & weeds, for the third time this year we couldn't get close to the grave of our dearly loved mum & grandparents. The upset this causes us is beyond words. This has been an ongoing problem over the years but in recent times has become a nightmare. Please lambeth council get this sorted

Yelp
Interesting cemetery to walk around, in an otherwise fairly unremarkable part of London. Those buried here include not only the judge mentioned in the other review, but also: - Sir Hiram Maxim, inventor of the machine gun - Mrs Beeton, of cookbook fame - Sir Henry Bessemer, engineer - C.W. Alcock, founder of Test Cricket - Panayis Athanese Vagliano, Greek shipping magnate - Henry Tate, sugar magnate and founder of the Tate Gallery - William Collingwood Smith, noted watercolour artist - Mary Bessie Brough, star of various silent films ....and many more... Unfortunately , in the postwar period Lambeth Council took over the cemetery and demolished some memorials; after a series of court cases in the 1990s, some of these were restored. Lacks the panoramic views offered by some of the other "Magnificent Seven" cemeteries in London (such as Nunhead), but of significant historical interest nonetheless. Worth a visit.

Yelp
First reaching over you are the stone gothic gates by Sir William Tite, you enter into this high gated and fenced park and it become a trip into what could be imagined to be the past. With 200 year old and gorgeous columbarium, vaults and catacombs and headstones. Forget about local park, to find serenity in the city noise have a stroll around, pick some blackberries and be reminded of your looming mortality, take a walk in West Norwood Cem.

Yelp
This is one of the Magnificent Seven Victorian Cemeteries built around London. This is a very well maintained cemetery with several interesting people buried here. The Judge who sentenced Doctor Crippin to hang is buried here. In a coincidental way so is the radio operator of the ship that Dr Crippin was trying to leave the UK on. This was the first case ever to use radio to catch a murderer ( there is now doubt over wether Crippin was wrongly convicted). There are some lovely walks here and there is a lot of wildlife to see such as Foxes sunbathing in some of the more secluded places. There are several places to get a drink or food nearby. Well worth a visit.
