Google
Fresh and clean food access where families can find healthy foods for an affordable price. Very friendly staff and clean store. My children loved it in there. Easy access for strollers and walking room to be a smaller building. Will be going back!

Matthew L.

Google
Went in to find a decent camembert cheese or close facsimile. Cypruss, at the cheese counter, led me to the most delicious fromagé and even helped me pair it with the perfect crackers and fresh figs. Excellent work! I will definitely be back for their advice. Cheese Wizard!

Google
What a great place. Has everything one could need. Friendly and helpful team. Seasonal goodness.

Leah S.

Google
A little over priced which is understandable for the location but it's hard to find a better premium selection of fresh foods around. It's a great spot for quick in and out grocery shopping. Plus they have a nice plant department.

jen S.

Google
Very expensive compared to most stores on almost every item, but, very good produce. Accepts and earns double up bucks for ebt. Uses toogoodtogo to eliminate food waste at a discount. Very good food and health products available here. Very helpful staff. Nice atmosphere. Clean. Very wide variety of products and has hard to find local items and some sort of harder to find ethnic foods. Even has dried mushrooms. Has a nice parking lot that is free.

I love the Western Market. It’s nearby and the produce is usually fresh. I’ve been shopping there for 15 years. Their prices have always been a little higher than elsewhere but lately they seem to be a lot higher. I’ve now been priced out of buying many products and have just found myself chuckling and walking away from some items. My household makes a significantly higher than average wage as two professional DINKs so I’m not exactly sure who their customer base is. I think if they aren’t more careful they will price out almost everyone and their business will suffer. Lowering prices where possible and finding some lower price choices might keep some of their customer base. I’d hate to see what happens if their prices continue to remain so much higher than competitors.

Google
I had a wonderful experience at Western Market today. I was trying to find a locksmith, and for some reason my maps app kept directing me into this market. I learned that there isn’t a locksmith inside, but when I asked an employee for some clarification, he went above and beyond by directing me to a local locksmith he had been to nearby. He showed me directions on his phone and was incredibly kind and helpful. Overall, I experienced amazing customer service today, and will definitely be returning here to buy groceries in the future!

Alexandra A.

Google
The BEST grocery!! They have amazing Toogoodtogo surprise bags and brought it to my car when I had my puppy with me. Sweetest people and amazing options.

Yelp
I'm sure the locals know about this place but I just happen to stumble upon it, and I was pleased that I did. Western Market has a wide selection of fresh foods, drinks, meats, vegan foods and even more specialty items. The place was very clean and the staff were friendly. It has a high end feel to it but pretty competitive prices compared to a Better Health, Zerbos, or Westborn Market. If you're in Ferndale and need to make a grocery store run I would highly recommend this place!

Joe B.

Yelp
Careful shopping here. Several items I have run across are expired or close to expiring. The store really needs to have staff go thru the refrigerator case especially and pull old items.
google avatar

Angeline D.

Yelp
I used to go here several times a week. This was my preferred grocery market. They used to be cheaper than holiday market, Westborn and Trader Joe's. The last year, I have had to go to Trader Joe's or Westborn because they are cheaper, and I can budget better. If I spend $125 at Trader Joe's, I would be charged $250 at Western. I am a quiet person with cPTSD. My cPTSD is triggered when I am approached and people beg me for money or to sign up for stuff I CAN'T AFFORD. I no longer feel safe shopping because this grocery store allows solicitors in store! I got heckled to sign up for a newspaper! Why? Because I fawn, or cooperate when cornered as part of a cPTSD response when in a vulnerable state. This is one of the reasons why I can never go back. I also feel exploited with the prices of everything in store. I am on a tight budget since 2020, and I can't justify why I should pay $10 for a product that I can get for half the price elsewhere! Not only that, I have to check the dates on products. I have purchased crushed eggs, sour milk, expired dips. No more. I can't justify throwing my hard earned money away.

Lesley S.

Yelp
Love this place: great meat counter with my fave butcher (Maria?), lovely herbs, great fruit/vegetable section, good wine selection.

Richard M.

Yelp
Western now invite bums to sit outside of their entrance, blocking part of the driveway and annoying / repelling customers, and beg. Never was a problem until recently. I won't go there anymore. Their prices are out of this world! Stick to Kroger, Walmart, or Aldi's. Sam's or Costco is even better.

Terri H.

Yelp
Great place! Very Clean!! Friendly! Prices fare compared to other markets like this.

Yelp
This is my go to spot to get my knives sharpened for a reasonable price, just $2.50 a knife and they do it while you shop if it's not busy at the meat counter. I also love the bulk spice section and speciality hot sauces. Definitely more of a specialty food store or if you're in a pinch and forgot an item for cooking a meal. In the last year they've done a ton of great updates to the store: fresh paint, shelves, and produce bins. Not the biggest fan of the self-checkout since I feel like this neighborhood grocery benefitted from the personal touch of the cashiers. There are still a couple cashiers but they went from 4 cashiers to 2 and added 4 self checkouts. A little bit more expensive for staples but they have an amazing selection of prepared items for a to-go lunch or dinner. Quality meats at the meat and deli counters and a fun craft beer selection. Sometimes we gather meats and cheeses for a charcuterie board from here too. I also love their discount section at the back past the dairy coolers. I always get a day old bread and other food items they've discounted.
google avatar

Erica A.

Yelp
This place is a gem. They have great local food finds. They also have great vegan options. It's easier to run into and get what you need than chain grocery stores. The quality of their produce, breads and baked goods is unmatched.

Yelp
Every time I come in to this store, there is one employee following me around and laughing to my face. Yes this is extremely weird and hardly explainable in normal world. I took my husband to whiteness this and we approached this individual and he didn't even denied it . My husband called management immediately and they basically accused us of lying. Store is maybe nice but there is a rotten energy inside. We considering lawsuit. Harassment is not acceptable.

Garrett D.

Yelp
Wanna be Whole Foods with exorbitant prices every single product is 30% to 40% more than anywhere else. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. I can't believe how grocery stores are doing this nowadays. I just paid 10 dollars for some reeds ginger beer. Is 6.49 everywhere that's. 35%increase for what?! Ambiance?! Y'all wonder why small business go under. Selling generic products for twice the price.

kathryn l.

Yelp
Whole food prices $$$ Fun place to shop Good service with lots of employees to help in each department

L.E. S.

Yelp
I have shopped here dozens of times and the staff on the floor are rarely helpful and often borderline hostile. Maybe surliness is a job requirement. I don't need much help but being treated with contempt when I do, like I was this morning, is totally unacceptable. Particularly considering the prices here. Happy to take my dollars elsewhere from here on out.

Yelp
I would have left a higher rating, but after how I was treated I'm not sure how to feel. I am a repeat customer, I come here maybe once a week or once every two weeks. I was accused of stealing possibly $1.00 at most worth of side toppings for my salad. I will say that I did not know that I had to ring in the toppings along with my salad. Once she told me that I continued to ring my items and she went on with her conversation with a coworker. As I was leaving she yelled across the store saying "ma'am! Excuse me ma'am did you pay for the side items?!?". I replied "yes" and continue walking she continues to say "oh really, because I didn't see you" in a snarky tone. It didn't stop there she almost attempted to chase after me. It was so humiliating and I've never been accused of stealing anything in my life. I am truly disappointed, she could've just asked to see my receipt. The attempt to catch me red handed was extremely distasteful. In the event that I rung up my items incorrectly, educate me! Don't continue to talk to coworkers about scheduling. Then proceed to accuse customers of stealing because you didn't see them. There was a significant number of people in there as well, it was so embarrassing! All of the other encounters I've had at this market have been wonderful and pleasant. It is a bit overpriced, but I know and appreciate quality items, so I gladly pay. The soups and salads are delicious. The place is always clean and in pristine condition. Give them a try, don't let my encounter deter you from going. I'll still continue to support, but this encounter just left a bit of sour taste.

Yelp
Western market is a cute little supermarket located in Ferndale :-) It has all the essentials one needs. They usually have everything in stock. The best part of the store are the baked goods ! They have the best cream cheese brownies ! If you are ever in Ferndale you must stop in and get some ! You won't be disappointed. Due to COVID they don't have the soup or salad bar right now which is a bummer because they make great soup! However, I do believe that they have their soup prepackaged so you can still purchase it. When I need meat I always go here because they prices are reasonable and the meat is always fresh ! Can't beat a fresh hot rotisserie chicken :-) Also staff is always friendly which makes you want to return to the store. Give the market your business :-)

Yelp
This place fires one of the sweetest and maturest cashiers that I've ever met and it is sad that I don't get to see her there anymore. I saw her at a restaurant and she told me what they did to her and I couldn't believe it. I will not patronize a place that treats their good employees that way. My experiences there lately has not been good, the cashiers are snotty and full of attitude and that manager is not friendly at all and always look upset. Small businesses need to be better with the quality of people they hire or they will lose customers.
google avatar

Heather G.

Yelp
Really nice market, and great food choices. The prices are outrageous so they lost a star for that. I love the jalapeño pierogis (they're on the back wall).
google avatar

Sandy H.

Yelp
Just picked up our fruit and cookie tray for the holidays. The cookies are delicious and the fruit tray is huge! I ordered a medium and it was larger than expected. It looks beautiful. Can't wait for breakfast on Christmas. Great job Western!

Ava B.

Yelp
Quality food and fresh produce, but prepare yourself to spend a pretty penny. Staff is strange, some are VERY sweet and others are just rude and patronizing. Store is also pretty cramped. I live a few minutes away but I only come here if it's absolutely necessary.
google avatar

Kayla H.

Yelp
I used to like going to this grocery store to pick up some staples I forgot, or a quick lunch. Unfortunately, this has stopped as the ACLU workers follow me from the parking lot to the front door. They refuse to leave me alone despite me declining to talk. Overall, the store no longer feels safe to me since the ACLU workers don't seem to understand no, and continue to follow. Overall, great grocery store but it's not somewhere I will go on my own.

Yelp
I love this place I been coming here since I was a kid I love the fresh salads and soup. I love the flowers and fruit and vegetables meats.
google avatar

Chelcie W.

Yelp
In my previous review I mentioned how amazing this market is no doubt, but also how they have a beautiful outdoor mini nursery that just has a crazy amount of flowers, herbs, fruits, veggies and so much more. Since I was just here, I decided to takes a lot of pics just so everyone can see what I mean. They started filling in the area with some flowers and decorations about a month ago, but now that springer (spring-summer) is finally here to stay, everything has been put on full display, and its glorious! I love coming here during the warmer months and looking at all their flower/plant options. As soon as you walk up you're greeted with hanging flowers, different sized pots, bird houses, cool metal lawn decorations, potting trays containing lots of different flowers, strawberries, corn, and even tomato plants with wire cages so the tomatoes can have somewhere to hang/grow. Everything outside is for purchase and there's a small shed where some Western employees can help you with anything you may need. Along the sidewalk is where you can find a lot of their herbs like thyme, sage, rosemary and even a couple different types of lavender (my fave!!!). They also have some larger potted plants like aloe and king rose and just a sea of even more flowers! And of course there's always fresh fruit and veggies outside too, since the inside is literally overflowing with all that fresh goodness!

Wetto C.

Yelp
Amazing place for organic and healthy food at a great price, they have a great selection of wine, cheese, and meats. They also have a salad bar, and multiple soups to choose from. The service in this place is immaculate, they are very friendly people and will make sure you get what you need and are treated right. The space is very clean and you rarely see any clutter or mess. Definitely an amazing store to shop at regularly.

Stephn G.

Yelp
The store is.....fine. However, unless you have copious amounts of disposable income, DO NOT go there for a deli sandwich. Why? Because they're $20!!!! Are you out of your ever-loving mind, Western Market?
google avatar

Frank C.

Yelp
Western Market is the quintessential grocer and provisions store in the Ferndale area. It truly is an amazing experience to shop there! They have all types of specialty products and your everyday essentials, all at the highest quality available. The meat section has the best cuts and even includes lamb, pork, beef, chicken, and local seafood. I also love the Western Market spice blends! If you're in the Ferndale area you just have to shop there!
google avatar

Nicole E.

Yelp
This place looks cool and has a decent produce section but has very little specialize items and I am not so impressed by the foods they make. I like the random wine tasting they have by the meat section here and there. I try to patron the stores more often by my house in royal Oak, plus I feel there are more options to pick from there. This is a decent spot to pick up something simple and quick, but as it's a small one off speciality store, prices here can feel a bit high for what you get.
google avatar

Yelp
A small but packed high end grocery store. Located off busy 9 Mile in trendy Ferndale. They have a private lot, but sometimes it is very busy. Outside is a high end grill and lawn a garden toy/ornament section. Usually there are also plants. Inside is a maze of narrow crowded in shelves, quality produce, higher end food products, prepared foods, and a small but nice meat and wine/beer area. Everything feels cramped, and for part of the shopping you are funneled. All the products are high end/quality. During busy times it is crowded and difficult to shop.

Marley M.

Yelp
it's a nice place to shop for a few things and love the non alcoholic drinks called kin i notice they take them out of the box and people pay for them individually any where else you get them in a box and it come s 4 in it and it's about $17.99 but they are selling them in singles at 4.99 so it's giving money hungry I ll gladly go to a different store to purchase and now never stop in any more

Alexis Y.

Yelp
Great market, a little expensive but defined worth all the fresh and local items. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Monica W.

Yelp
Always helpful and knowledgeable. They have a wide arrangement of products, brands, and I believe majority organic. It makes me happy to support this local business when they constantly are friendly, clean, and stocked. The only downside is how cramped the checkout lines are but never wait more than 5 minutes to checkout, even on a busy night.
google avatar

Andrey T.

Yelp
This small-ish market tries to compete with the gourmet markets, while keeping prices reasonable and stocking eclectic items. This place once was a bargain fruit and vegetable market, with some staples. Then they remodeled and went high end. A genuine competitor to Westborn and Holiday. But for their space limitation, they would hold their own. Staff is always friendly and helpful. Prices for fruits and vegetables is reasonable. Prepared foods are tasty. Large meat and deli counter. Lots of specialty milks. Wine selection is their weakest point. Weird stuff you never heard of. Even Vivino can't identify many of the wines. Weird price points. I mean higher prices than I would expect for unknown wines. Very few $10 bottles. Other weak point is lack of selection of staples. But given their lack of space, can't really fault them for it. Good neighborhood specialty and fruit market.
google avatar

Max G.

Yelp
Cool store clearly popular with the locals. Stopped through a few times and the quick to go food is always good.
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
Nice grocery store, have some interesting items. Really nice prepared food section but the ultimate winner is the cactus chili the flavors are incredible not overly spicy. Beef , corn ,beans, tomato, onion and cactus. This stuff is top notch. The thing is you have to check their website to see what days they serve it. I have had other soups there and they are fantastic.
google avatar

Jon G.

Yelp
I live fairly close to this store. I've purchased items from here a few times and overall a great experience. Is it pricey? Yes...but what isnt in Ferndale. Also, you're paying for overall quality and their quality is off the charts. Fresh veggies, free parking, SOLID butcher! You guys are my new go to for when im feeling bad and bougie. #StampOfApproval
google avatar

Ronda N.

Yelp
As a Ferndale resident I enjoy shopping local. Western is the best produce market compared to Holiday, Westbourn or Trader Joe's. Some people complain about the prices but I find their prices just right especially for organic produce. Western has a great variety of fruits and vegetables. The meat counter is on point. The ready made food and salad bar is a nice addition to the store. The employees are always friendly and helpful. At Western you can meet almost all of your basic grocery shopping needs.

Cathleen S.

Yelp
I come into the to time to grab quick premade food. This was a chicken Caesar salad and probably a third of the container was filled with shredded Parmesan cheese. Lack of quality control. Sometimes I get the salmon Cesar and it will either have what seems like an 8 ounce serving of salmon or a 1.5 ounce serving- Very inconsistent, check your package.
google avatar

Claire C.

Yelp
The Western Market has been a staple ever since my husband and I moved to Ferndale! The workers are exceptionally nice and always willing to help. The produce is fresh and the baked goods never disappoint (especially the sourdough!). The store is stocked with fresh juice, coffee, meat, prepared hot foods, salads, dairy, wine and frozen goods. I love walking to the Western Market and seeing what goodies I might find If you want high quality items and a great shopping experience, come to Western Market.
google avatar

Caroline B.

Yelp
Great grocery store. I love the fresh selections of veggies. Kind of pricey but Im alwasy happy with the quality of the items I buy. Also only place in Ferndale to buy Boars Head deli meats and cheeses.
google avatar

S L.

Yelp
Gluten free selection is killer, produce is affordable and the variety is fantastic. I even love the plants they carry.
google avatar

Rodger W.

Yelp
My favorite market in the neighborhood. Killer prepared food, fresh meats, deserts, and the best small selection of wine in the state. The prepared food is about half the price of Holiday Market, and better. Back to the wine. I went in the other day to buy 2 mangoes, and i walked out with 6 bottles of rare Italian wines that I have never seen in the US, Including an organic Gorizian white made by a super low volume artisan winemaker. Props to the wine guy! Also, they stock the rare in these parts "From the Tank" French box wines, which are amazing.
google avatar

Stacia G.

Yelp
I moved into Oak Park a few years ago and took too long to wander into this store. It is a bit high end and you won't find cat food here. However what you will find is wonderfully fresh fruits and vegetables. There is also an amazing selection of kombucha and ready made foods. The soup is amazing and they have an array of pre-prepared foods that are reasonably priced. And not everything is pricey- but if you are looking for some amazing ghee it's here. At the meat counter they have "Day old" steaks that are marinated. They do run out if you don't get there early enough (and the meat is good and reasonably priced). Beware of going on Thursday night as they do wine tastings and you may wander out with some great bottles that are recommended by Cameron or Penrod. If you're looking for something out of the ordinary you just my find it here (like better half creamer!)
google avatar

A C.

Yelp
I love this grocery store and the staff are so kind and helpful! I love how small but convenient it is! So many Michigan products super affordable! And it's definitely a one stop shop!

A. A.

Yelp
the only reason I go into this store is because it's close to my house. I've never met a group of people so entitled and rude in my life. I can't figure out if they actually think they are curing cancer (or in this case, covid) or are they really that quick to forget that they are grocery store workers. You'd think by now they would have an effective, common sense, time saving and polite way of dealing with the pandemic. But no, they don't. Rude cashiers, unhelpful staff (when you can even find one), clueless door people and inflated price gouging. The only reason I go into the store is because their meats department is the closest thing to actual meat around town. If this tells you how annoyed I am with that place then you know it's bad but I'd rather shop at the Meijer at 8 and Woodward. and that place is a dump. Get a grip on reality. You sell onions, not solving world hunger. AND you're in Ferndale.
google avatar

Diane R.

Yelp
Wonderful market great for organic and local food. I bought the fresh cider for a gathering it was wonderful.
google avatar

Julian B.

Yelp
A tad pricey but some great specialty stuff. Hot foods and a salad and soup bar. Good coffee. Mexican 7 layer dip is out of this world. A touch small but that is some of the charm? Great fresh fruits and veggies outside. Saw some divine Mich. Grown tomatoes yesterday outside. Love the quality of their meats.

Yelp
Having recently moved to the area and (very) within walking distance of 9Mile X Woodward I've shopped all the markets in the area and can safely say Western Market quickly became the main source to fill my fridge. My partner is a vegetarian, so we need to go big on or go home on produce and this place delivers. Some reviews have stated that the produce is dirty but that has not been my experience at all -- if anything I sometimes question how polished and waxy certain products seem. I suppose if I were to come across some fruits and veggies that needed a bath I would simply remind myself that they came from the earth. The selection of organic and local produce isn't just good it is CHEAP and well worth supporting the smaller guy. My only qualm is that some of their specials are simply items starting to go bad which is fine, no point having it all go to waste, but there should be someone keeping an eye on the stock. No one wants to have to sift through countless bad strawberries to find one fresh enough and delightfully cheap pack. As far as the rest of the market the prices seem similar to other spots on 9 Mile, nothing impressive or offensive. However, one thing I am loving is the grass fed organic beef! I eat meat but I try to be wise about it and this is a rare gem!!, (which is reflected in the price). Safe to say I'm really glad Western Market is situated so close to my abode. I'll be spending a portion of each weekend there while in the state and hope that they can expand on their grass fed selection!

Yelp
I have a love-hate relationship with Western Market. They very often don't have what I need, but they always have something I want. They always have a nice selection of plants in their outdoor garden shop, during growing season.. They also carry art for outdoors. The grocery selection here is varied but small, as is the store itself. That said, everything is always fresh. They have a nice offering of ready to eat foods, including soups, pastries and of course rotisserie chicken. The fresh squeezed orange juice is delicious. You can usually grab a taste of it just as you enter. They usually offer samples throughout the store, including wine if you're lucky. The staff both inside and in the garden area are somewhat aloof, with the occasional friendly face. There is free on-site parking, but like most places in Ferndale, it's very limited.
google avatar

Ray M.

Yelp
One of my top favorite stores in this area. Gray employees with great attitudes. Great vibes. Super fresh everything. The fish is about the best I have been able to find. Great selection of fresh fish. They always have halibut filets which isn't the most common occurrence at other markets. Friendly staff. The variety of products gives an opportunity to try several different brands and decide what's most fitting your preference. I've been coming to this market since childhood. Has always been this way and I hope it never changes.

Johnny U.

Yelp
I cannot give more than 2 stars. It is VERY expensive. OVERPRICED $8.50 for 4 fried chicken legs when weighed. Let me share a story with one of the owners, Steve's brother. They stopped carrying shredded lettuce and I asked him about it. He acted nice and said, I can have that head of lettuce shredded for you. He came back and it was in a container. The sticker said almost $10. He gave me the full weigh price of the salad bar for the whole head of lettuce instead of $1.89 or whatever it was. It has a good deli and very nice staff. For that I will not give 1 star.

Yelp
Nothing wrong with making a profit, but with the pricing continue to drive up, existing customers will opt for larger purchases at places with more value. In the long run, reasonable pricing will yield more profit with more loyal customers. A long time customer who will choose a different option.
