I have no idea how I found this little gem but I'm so glad that I did. Honestly, I wasn't very excited about visiting, but, since I had already dragged my husband to an alpaca farm, I thought it was only fair that he got to do something that I really wasn't interested in.
When we got to the address, the road was closed. Surely the museum was closed too. (You can feel my heartbreak, right?). I called, they were open. (Sigh). They told us how to get onto the property - I think the left turn that we made onto the museum's dirt road was probably illegal - but we did get there.
Outside the museum were large hunks of metal - machines that I had no clue their purpose. I'd be lying if I told you that I gleefully walked into the building, anxious to be broadening my knowledge of mining. No, I sat in the car trying to think of reasons that would keep us from having to spend an hour or more broadening my knowledge of mining. By now, my husband was already walking in - it was too hot to sit in the car and since he had the keys, I was out of good options.
Walking in, I noticed that this museum lacked pretension. You buy tickets at a desk a few steps from the door. But don't let the casualness of the check-in process deceive you. This museum is a labor of love by those who want to share their knowledge and passion to those of us lacking either. I was immediately sucked in...
So many amazing displays, easy to read, easy to understand. You could read as much or as little as you'd like. There is so much more than just gold - other precious metals, gems and the king of all mining - coal were on display.
One room that blew my mind contained cases of various ores that were luminescent under black light. So cool. I mean, really, who knew these even existed?
We really did need to get on the road and this time it was my husband dragging me out, I could have spent the rest of the afternoon there - reading all of the displays and watching the available videos. There was a tour beginning in 15 minutes though we were the only ones there.
If you are in the area, please make the time to visit this little gem! (And yes, the pun is intended!!).
