Where to Find Delectable French Food in Austin

"The Westlake wine restaurant really hones in on high-quality French cuisine for lunch and dinner services. Expect classic dishes such as beef bourguignon, gratin dauphinois (sliced potatoes baked in cream), and duck. Then there’s the lengthy wine list with many, many, many French options. There are indoor and outdoor dine-in services." - Nadia Chaudhury

What a wonderful find I had an hour and a half to kill in between my son’s baseball lesson so I stopped in for a quick bite to eat. I ordered the muscles but their burger looked amazing. Also wonderful atmosphere plenty of elbow room, and the staff was very accommodating. They even gave me some samples of some great wine.

The best Greek salad I've had in years. I had the pork chop and Katherine has the salmon. Both were perfect. This was our first time here and we will be back. There is a table for two in the wine room you can reserve. This would be a great place for a company party or event. The wine selection was fantastic too. The owner is from Switzerland.

Google
Huge disappointment! Beef bourguignon had 1 little cube of beef and the rest just carrots. We send it back, but they still wanted to charge us for it by offering us 50% off of that dish. Manager or the owner tried to explain the recipe by saying “… carrots are part of the recipe..” Here is the recipe and the proportions by Julia Child (just incase): INGREDIENTS: 3 pounds (1 1/2 kg) beef brisket 1 large carrot sliced 1/2-inch thick The rest they can use Google to find. Convenient location was the only good thing about this place. P.S. 03/17/2023 - I've read you reply to my review. I was not alone at the table. I can ask everyone to share their opinion if they think my review was "deceptive". This is how Julia Child would respond to your reply. "Well, my dear, I've read your reply to my review, and I must say, it's always a pleasure to hear from fellow gourmands. As I always say, the best part of cooking is the ability to experiment and find new flavors that suit our unique tastes. So, let's not be discouraged, but rather see this as an opportunity to broaden our culinary horizons! There are countless recipes to explore, and with each one, we learn, grow, and refine our skills in the kitchen. As you venture into new recipes, you'll surely find those that will earn rave reviews from even the most discerning diners. Remember, cooking is an art, and like any art, it's a matter of trial and error. Don't hesitate to play with flavors, ingredients, and techniques to create something truly special. And most importantly, have fun while doing it! After all, as I often say, "The only real stumbling block is fear of failure. In cooking, you've got to have a what-the-hell attitude." I have no doubt that with persistence and a touch of culinary curiosity, you'll soon be delighting diners and earning praise for your delectable creations. Keep your chin up, your whisk at the ready, and your oven preheated - the world of wonderful recipes awaits! Bon Appétit and happy cooking!"

Google
The owner, Pierre is amazing. Super knowledgeable. The construction makes it difficult to navigate there but it is definitely worth the hassle. This place is a rare gem . Must try. They also do wine tastings!

Google
What a delicious birthday dinner! Wine choice is extensive and we were very well advised by the French owner and the sommelier. Our steaks were perfectly cooked, French fries are soooo crispy, with a final (secret?) touch on top that makes them unique. Chocolate cake also was a treat. Thanks a lot! We look forward coming back soon.

Google

Google
Love love it! Beautiful and comfortable inside, open floor plan with a great atmosphere. The patio is large and set up for a full dining experience. Great wine list with a helpful staff to make great suggestions. The custom charcuterie was really good. We’ll be back.

Google
Food was good but service was very slow. Went for Xmas Eve and they seemed overwhelmed despite the pre-set menu. Had several different servers and had to remind them about the wine paring that went with each course. Will have to try again on a non-Holiday to see how it truly is.

Yelp
I struggled here because I'd like to give them 3 1/2 stars not 3 however 4 was not happening and It's not that they didn't have a good intent, and there was some good food on the table but this restaurant needs to pay more attention to the preparation as in cooking. The owner and staff were very good. It is unfortunate that there's so much construction going on around this restaurant. I think it limits how many folks come here French onion soup tasty good base and cheese Mussels MEH, very gritty and the sauce seems like an afterthought, no herbs or flavor to speak of. They could not tell you where the mussels came from had no clue just said from a bag. Ratatouille good probably one of the best dishes on the table Brussel sprouts really good Carrots excellent Potatoes Dauphinoise one of my favorite dishes. The sauce was broken, the potatoes, heavy and gummy some were still hard as in in cooked. Greasy Beef Bourguignon a classic and prepared well, the carrots were especially delicious duck breast a l'orange one of my favorite dishes meant to be served medium rare. I'm sorry to report it was so overcooked it was like eating and organ meat and hard to chew we had to send back. The sauce was delicious but what they did to Duck was unacceptable Wine list comprehensive the sparkling rose. He was excellent. I have a glass. Considering the quality of the food, I would definitely mark this place is overpriced, but there is a glimmer of hope if they can organize the kitchen

Yelp
What a pleasure to find this gem. Excellent wine selection, dining menu and service. Refined and relaxed simultaneously. Plentiful parking and easy to find. Definitely pushed out our former date night regular go-to. C'est merveilleux!

Yelp
This is a nice spot in the Davenport Village complex! Check daily to see the HH deals. We went on a Friday and they had 2 for the price of 1 glasses of wine, which was a great deal! The wine selection is great and they have a wide variety from France as well. We only tried a couple appetizers but they were all very mediocre. Wasn't impressed by any. I think next time it's wine & cheese boards for me! They do have a full dinner menu though so maybe that is better.

Yelp
Best kept secret on the 360 in Westlake. They serve a delightful French style cuisine. Wonderful ambiance. Nice soft jazz. Forgot to do a picture because it was so good lookking, I dug right in!! I had the best perfectly cooked salmon and green beans and cherry tomatoes in garlic and shallots. They had a dessert that was amazing, simple, light, and crazy tasty. I'm usually very critical, but this was so nice. Service was pleasant and classy. Again, best kept secret !!

Nick C.

Yelp
The food and service were very good. Shared different dishes and a nice bottle of wine. I will return soon.

Yelp
Came by this spot Saturday night and ordered a bottle of Malbec and the charcuterie cheese board. The wine was delicious- perfect temp & great flavor, complimented the cheese very well. The cheese and charcuterie was a good size and tasty as well. Not too intricate but well done. Service was friendly and attentive. Clean and Relaxed atmosphere. It was nice that it wasnt really loud and crowded. You could really enjoy your wine and the company you're with. Overall very pleased with the experience and glad we decided to stop in. Took off one star just because it's really hard to find because the area is so dark at night. A lit outside sign would help as we thought the whole building was the cigar place next door and drove around looking for it. Also the cigars next door are so potent the smell permeates through the walls a bit which is a little annoying to someone with a very strong sense of smell and sensitive to smoke/cigar smell. Nothing against the business itself and might not even bother others. I would visit again the next time I'm in Austin especially if I'm looking for a more chill, uncrowded spot with parking. Wine flights could be fun too!!

Yelp
We visited for the first time and had a nice evening. Service was attentive and we thought food was truly good. It happened to be happy hour on a Thursday so our wine was $6 glass. We had brussel sprout appetizer which was huge and fantastic + burger/fried + beef bourguignon. All food was super good and prompt. We will be back. One concern was the very strong cigar smell permeating thru the walls from smoke shop next door. That was a little annoying.

Yelp
The owner is fantastic and so hospitable. The wine and food choices are amazing. I highly recommend coming here and ordering multiple plates and wine. We enjoy the Brie, Brussels sprouts, and penne al vodka!

Yelp
Super underestimated restaurant. I am so happy to discover the Tasmanian Jansz brut here. Had burrata and a side of veggie here (turned out to be bok choy). Loved the service and music/atmosphere

Yelp
They have great food and an excellent wine list. I don't drink, but the owners still recommended their wine room with a table for two, which was perfect for conversation and a wonderful meal. I highly recommend this place!

Grace S.

Yelp
Amazing service from the owner, the best food I've had in Austin for a while. Beautiful vibes inside and out. I cannot stress enough how good the food and wine is.... Also the wine brought to the table to taste, it was a dinning experience and a wonderful one at that! Perfect place to unwind!! (and mondays have a great wine deal ) My family's favorite haunt

Yelp
PHENOMENAL. Incredible - food quality, Sommelier (David) expertise for wine pairings is top notch, what a wonderful experience! We enjoyed the French onion soup and beef bourguignon - delightful! The burger was out of this world - so tender and flavourful!! Monday evenings - 50% off bottles of wine, the selection is amazing. We will be back!

Charlie S.

Yelp
Loved our meal at the Westlake Wine Bar. Food - amazing, owner - so hospitable. Incredible service and yummy.

Lauren S.

Yelp
Food, ambiance and service were all awesome. Looking forward to coming back again soon.

Yelp
First time here with friends and it was great. Good service, great wine (and at a fair price!), great wine advice and to top it off the appetizers we had were superb. Couldn't ask for more.

Yelp
Wow! Loved Westlake Wine Bar. We went as a date night. We ordered mussels as an appetizer and they stole the show. The wine selection was amazing and the staff was very knowledgeable about the wines. Food and wine was amazing overall. We will definitely be going back!

Yelp
Westlake Wine Bar is Austin's newest wine bar with over 200 wines from all over the world. I'm pretty particular when it comes to my wine since I prefer it really sweet and I finally found a restaurant that offers a few that match my taste. I got two dessert wines here: - Sauternes: this one gets it's flavor from a fungus which "infects" the grapes which shrivels them into crinkly pockets of sugar and flavor - this one is a bit lighter and brighter in flavor. From France! ($10/glass) - Inniskillin: this is an ice wine which is produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine and because the water inside freezes, it allows for a deeper more concentraded grape juice to develop - this one was my favorite. Like drinking boozy grape juice tbh. From Canada! ($18/glass) And to eat I got: - Classic Beef Tartare: chopped raw filet mignon with truffle, yolk, and crostini. Because filet is being used, it's gonna be very tender and be very flavorful. Paired with the drops of the sweet jam and damn, this was great! ($17) - Bacon Wrapped Dates: this one surprised me most because I don't care for dates, but these are cooked so they are really soft and "jammy". This sweetness paired with the savory bacon was an amazing combo! ($16) - Pan Seared Cod: this comes with squash, broccolini, brown butter, and sunflower vinaigrette. This sweet, nutty flavor paired well with the light, tender Cod. ($28) - Beef Bourguignon: this is a beef stew braised in red wine and beef stock with veggies. Has this thick, gravied consistency and flavor. It was good, but I desired more richness out of it especially since it was $33... - Tiramisu: great way to end the meal, but not as rich and flavorful as I would have liked. ($12) Overall, when it came to the wine selection I was highly satisfied! I will definitely be back for that. When it came to the food, some were good and some were great. The customer service was amazing, our server was highly knowledgable. And the ambiance inside is alright, I think sitting outside would be more ideal. With all that said, I give them a strong 4/5!

Yelp
We were treated like kings at this wine bar - fabulous food, terrific service and an excellent recommendation for the wine. Looking forward to returning!

Yelp
Great restaurant, service, food, wine list. Huge space for events. Staff is very knowledgeable. Owner is very kind.

Yelp
Dreadful. Bad bad food and overpriced wine that they make you believe is "special purchased" when in fact it is standard wine selection you can get at HEB The special was a "handmade pasta" which you could add a lobster tail and "special black truffle". The pasta was severely under cooked and tasteless. The black truffle tasted stale and flavorless despite us being told "we are in the height of truffle season" and the entire table side presentation of the truffle shaving. The lobster was very tough and rubbery Shame on us for not asking the price In advance This dish ended up being $115 per plate We will not be back

Yelp
I don't care how good the food might be or how great the wine list if an owner is not friendly. The place always looks empty and they turned us away without reservations. Not only no apology but an attitude. Plenty of great places to dine in Austin worthy of month long waits for reservations with friendly owners and staff. And they're not next to a cigar bar. I won't bother to go there again.

Tracy L.

Yelp
I've been wanting to come here since they opened. We were in the area and finally dropped by. I wish I could remember the name of our server, she was the best part of the place, very nice and attentive. We started with a glass of wine and a small cheese plate. I liked that you could build your own and there was a good selection for someone that can't eat cow's milk cheese. The tangerine chili olives were delicious. I ordered the Salmon which was just meh. A thin cut and really nothing special about it, especially for $37. My husband got the beef bourguignon which was very tasty but a rather small portion for him. We felt that we were the only table that the sommelier and/or owner didn't check by to ask how we were doing which felt crummy seeing we left with a hefty bill. Maybe it's because we aren't fancy Westlake people? That's the vibe we got. It's a new restaurant and you'd think they would want to make everyone feel welcome. We probably won't be back but it wasn't terrible. Nice wine selections. My Bordeaux was delicious though at $16 a glass you'd hope for a little better pour.

Noah B.

Yelp
Ok. Don't come here if you're in a hurry. Or if you want your order to be accurate. Pork chop was good (but small). The steak we ordered medium came out well done and it was not the right steak. Wine was good. Atmosphere is excellent. But plan to be here 90 minutes.

Jared P.

Yelp
Stay away! Owner keeps all tips from customer checks that are meant for the wait staff.

Yelp
I went here last night with a group of girlfriends and we were so pleasantly surprised. The wine selection was wonderful, and our waiter was very helpful in making suggestions to match each of our tastes. We all enjoyed our cheese plate, steak frites, and the burger. The owner, Pierre, came by to make sure we all enjoyed our meals and they even brought us dessert. We will certainly be back soon!

Yelp
Great food, wine, and pairing recommendations. Met the owner who could not have been more gracious or helpful

Yelp
We had lunch here for Mother's Day I recommend it Wonderful food Wonderful service Great atmosphere We will put this restaurant on the list of our favorites
google avatar

Ethan S.

Yelp
This is the worst place I have ever been. Do not waste your time or your money. This place is really awful. Waited for water while the owner and waitress drank at bar. I give them less than a month.
google avatar

Nic C.

Yelp
Best filet mignon I've ever had...although it may have been a special the day I came in. Looking forward to a rare cooked salmon my next visit, which may be tomorrow. The steak was seasoned and cooked to perfection. The chef went well above and beyond. The edgy yet delightful service was the cherry on top. Great banter in regards to fine wines. I love this place and would come back again. Excellent atmosphere.

Melissa G.

Yelp
Been here a number of times. The service is top-notch, the menu is inventive and the food delicious, and the wine selection is incredible. Great for just a glass of wine on the way home, a meet up with friends, or a special occasion dinner.

Yelp
Hi everyone! Westlake wine bar is an amazing find. My boyfriend and I are foodies and like trying new places. West lake wine bar has delicious steak tartar and amazing wine choices, especially by the glass which, I find wonderful that I can try/ pair my wine with their delicious French cuisine. I also like that it has a beautiful modern homie feel that you feel relaxed in. And Rama our server made our whole meal feel like we were part of the family and have been going there for years. Definitely going again.

Tom W.

Yelp
We made a come back to this neighborhood wine bar. Actually, we have stopped in twice since last review for just some wine and cheese. Tonight, we had fabulous service from Cali (spelling?). She was super attentive and made sure our night was special. The small charcuterie/cheese board was well assembled. We opted for a Pouilly Fuisse as a familiar French Chard. After, when we wanted another glass of white wine, Cali directed us to a dry Riesling that was available by the glass especially tonight. Fabulous. We had a steak salad and a steak frites with an addition of seethed foie grad. I am not sure about the cut of steak. The serving was small for the price, and not seasoned. Tough and overcooked. It would have been more appropriate as a tenderloin. The seeded foie gras was good, but also unseasoned. We lingered a bit late and opted for a final glass of champagne and chocolate cake that was recommended by Cali. Perfect end. Happy to report that we will return and hope to see the continued improvement.

Patricia W.

Yelp
This was a disappointing experience. An expensive, disappointing experience. The ambience was sub par; brightly lit and with a strip center feel. It would have been forgiven if the food had not been so bad. The pasta in the truffle pasta dish was like chewing pellets and the steak was just flat out bad. I will not be returning.
google avatar

Benjamin H.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I dined here last night, and it was amazing! Great ambience, excellent culinary offerings, and a well curated wine list. Rama, our server, impressed us with both his knowledge and warm hospitality. Service was on point and the pacing of our experience was perfect. We highly recommend a visit to Westlake Wine Bar, and make sure to request Rama as your server.

Yelp
First and not the the last time visit to this wonderful new restaurant with friendly staff and great cuisine. We met Pierre the owner formally from Switzerland and the family is all part of the new restaurant. Please visit and judge for yourself!

Kathryn B.

Yelp
Hidden gem in Westlake - food, wine, and service was great! We got the salmon crudo, caesar salad, and the burger - loved it all. Highly recommend!

andrea s.

Yelp
This place has the best service I have ever had!! They go above and beyond to make they're customer happy and the steak I had was cooked to perfection.

Katie B.

Yelp
I met my friend, who is a private chef, for happy hour/dinner here tonight. We arrived at 5:30 and left at 9 because we were having such a nice time. We started with the cheese board, followed by the onion soup and salads. The wine selection is great, and the food was delicious. Rama, our server, did an excellent job checking in on us and made sure we were taken care of. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I have been looking forward to trying this place and I finally got an opportunity. The build out is nice though the open kitchen (which I normally like) is really messy looking. The food overall was pretty good. Nothing great but good. We had a very nice bottle of wine at a price that was fair. The problem is the staffing (or lack thereof). It was not busy so you would think the service would be good. Wrong! You could tell the poor server had not been properly trained, she was running around due to a lack of other severs, and it was frankly a disorganized mess. It took over twenty five minutes to get a bottle of wine opened. The apps came out late and right before our entrees. The fries were cold. Nobody ever came to pour the wine for us after the first pour. The man who seemed to be the owner/manager spent his time talking to another table. Another guy working there (wearing a t shirt) spent his time on a computer in the front. All while the understaffed servers were running around. My server was very nice. But you could tell she lacked any real training. This falls on the management. All of it. We spent $275 for two people. Certainly not worth it considering our experience. Ironically we would have spent more but they never came to take our dessert order in spite of asking...

H T.

Yelp
We just discovered Westlake Wine Bar and really enjoyed it. A very nice wine selection and delicious food. It is our new favorite place for a pleasant relaxing evening.

I G.

Yelp
Went for a wine tasting last week. It was cramped and loud upstairs with a cheap charcuterie board. Had to serve ourselves water and get up to get any food as no wait staff. Very poorly organized. Owner referred to a website to get information on wines and had a cardboard poster with the picture of France for us to refer to. He adamantly was trying to hold tasting to an hour to get us downstairs to his restaurant for dinner and repeated this time limit twice. Luckily we couldn't wait to leave. Way too loud in room so couldn't even hear my table mates 2 people away, and room smelled of cigars.Overall not a great experience.

Lee M.

Yelp
Really disappointing. Our intent was to have wine and appetizers and celebrate birthdays. The menu for appetizers was limited but we decided on the hummus, bacon wrapped dates, and Parmesan fries. That night we were told they were out of the dates and hummus. A new menu was planned for the next day. Yikes! That didn't help us. There was a scramble to find anything on the menu that would serve as an appetizer. Settled on mediocre peppers. The wine was good. The server was also good. Everything else was forgettable. We won't be back.

Robbie L.

Yelp
I first tried this restaurant a few months ago while feeling adventurous, and I am now a regular! The food is spectacular, and service is even better. Their wine selection is great and the staff were very helpful. Leonard was my server and he did a great job!

samantha s.

Yelp
This place had the most wonderful service and the greatest wine selection i've encountered! The suggestions were amazing and their wine tastings are one to not miss! My server was Leonard & he was one of the most friendly servers i've ever had!

Dave H.

Yelp
First time here. Still almost soft launch. Great food and wine a little pricey but a really nice addition to a part of town where the choices for dining are limited.

Sally C.

Yelp
We were excited to try this French restaurant for dinner. The hostess was lovely friendly & kind. It took forever for the server to acknowledge us. As we viewed the menu we noticed how pricy it was but it didn't deter us. Finally our server took our wine order. His attitude was hurried. As I looked around there wasn't many people in there. We finally ordered dinner (it was good) but the server was horrible as he had to go and get us fresh silverware. When he returned it was just strewn towards us. The owner came to our table to refill our wine. I asked if he was the owner. He was so unfriendly. Needless to say we won't return.

Amy C.

Yelp
The restaurant has a beautiful ambiance. The European wine list is excellent! The food was extremely tasty. The service was very good! The only recommendation would be based on the name 'Westlake Wine Bar' I would add more American comfort food. We will definitely be back to eat and drink soon!

V. Linn S.

Yelp
We all enjoy being treated special, I'm no exception. Tonight, my wife and I attended an Italian wine tasting event, which was really good and informative. Afterwards, we were hungry and thinking about dinner. We ran into Pierre, the owner, who remembered us from previous visits and offered us the wine room to dine in. It was just me and Julie being taken care of by Pierre. We ordered wine, appetizers and entrees. As we were finishing up, Pierre asked if there was anything else we would like? I suggested only if he wanted to open his favorite bottle of wine to share. A few minutes later he came back with his "friend" Stacy, who was charming, and we all enjoyed a bottle of Bordeaux, which nearly converted me from Italian wines. We spent the better part of an hour just talking, getting to know each other and enjoying each other's company. It was one of the best experiences ever. Thank you and we can't wait to be back.
