The Best Pub Grub in London | Scotch Eggs, Sausage Rolls and Chip Butty | Eater London

"Antic pubs are contrived, certainly, but serve a purpose. Westow House in Crystal Palace, Catford Constitutional Club, Tooting Tram & Social and the East Dulwich Tavern are all mainstays in their locale. Regulars are as consistent as the pubs themselves. Juicy sausage rolls are one frequent menu item worth trying, as are bacon and egg sandwiches. Menus differ between pubs, with some hosting pop-up ventures; other establishments are far more geared towards music and drinking and food features hardly at all. Still, it’s fair to say that in most Antic pubs you’ll find something good to eat, be it a slab of shepherd’s pie or bowl bouillabaisse and crusty bread." - Josh Barrie

Me and my wife stayed here for the facing south concert today, we arrived at 3pm and were promptly greeted by a member of staff on her break (thank you for giving us your time) we checked in and dropped our bags off in our room and we went downstairs to the restaurant/bar area and was served by a lovely gentleman with long hair who served us our pints and took our food order (we highly recommend the smash burger!!) even tho the pub was busy our food took no longer then 15 minutes to get to table which was ideal as we were on a tight schedule to get to the concert. After the concert and we returned to a lively classy atmosphere that took us by surprise as we thought they would be closing down by 11 we stayed for 2 drinks and returned to the room which has a comfortable large sized double bed Couldn’t recommend more we will be back on our next outing to Crystal Palace!

Popped in for a Sunday roast just after 3 and told to go away as fully booked for football - which didn’t start till 5, so I’m sure we could have sorted something out - the guy in the back was so rude, and fancy booking the entire pub out - I live locally so I guess I’ll consider my options now during their quiet times when they want the custom. I went to the to the Faber Fox down the road, who were exactly in the same situation with the football, but willing to be more reasonable, and who have excellent roasts I might add!

Highly recommend this hotel. The rooms are wonderfully decorated and very clean, beds are comfortable. Breakfast was very good you can choose from their menu. The staff is helpful and friendly. The only thing no elevator but the staff will carry your suit cases up and down.

We booked into Westow House as we were wedding guests at nearby Kingswood House (Bovril Castle). The venue was only 5 mins away so Westow House was perfect for us. We were extremely lucky to get an early check-in which meant we could leave our bags etc and finish getting ready for the wedding in good time. This isn't guaranteed though - just fortunate for us as the hotel was relatively quiet on a week night. The staff are lovely, friendly and accommodating. The hotel decor is gorgeous and the bed very comfy. We were very surprised how quiet the room was considering the location and enjoyed the views of London. The luxury natural Bramble toiletries and fluffy white towels were a lovely touch. Breakfast was plentiful and the coffee was excellent.

Very lively pub on busy corner of c.p. Food varies, sometimes its spectacular and others not. Last week waited over an hour for food and was over cooked but then the week prior, had the best fish and chips I've ever had! Photo of the good food day lol

We had the best time at Westow House. The rooms are beautiful, and so comfy. Food was great and service amazing too. Friendliest staff :) Easy to get into central London. Will definitely stay here next time we are in London.

We only came in for dinner. The service was excellent. The woman from Vancouver BC made us feel like home and took great care of us. The Sunday chicken roast is enough for two people, especially if you add on those delicious lamb skewers.

What a wonderful pub hotel! We only stayed one night, for our Crystal anniversary (see what I did there?) but I only wish we could have stayed longer. Beautiful room (we stayed in Hawk), with amazing views over the park and London. The staff were lovely and helpful. The bottle of bubbly in the room fridge was very gratefully received and the little bag of treats and the card was a wonderful surprise. We slept very well, and the breakfast was delicious - I had a full English, which was all perfect, and a delightful member of staff carried the French toast with berry compote, coffee and drink up to the room for my wife, which she absolutely loved. Late checkout was great too. Thanks so much!

Yelp
Perfect modern, cozy pub overlooking Crystal Palace Park Great menu with the classics (fish and chips, roast dinners) and vegan friendly options too Tons of space offering multiple rooms for the vibe you like - dining area with service, bar area to order at the bar and TV for football games, and upstairs seating that is often quieter Highly recommend the "pub desking" option if you want to work from a public spot. For £15 you get bottomless coffee or soft drinks, lunch or breakfast and a pint or glass of wine at the end of the day. AND because it's also a hotel, they serve their awesome breakfast everyday and early - very rare for pubs in London

Yelp
This large, rustic pub is close to Crystal Palace Park and a great venue to grab dinner after enjoying a day outside! It can be difficult to get a table on the patio when it's nice out, but it's definitely worth it. There's ample space inside as well. The food is decent pub food at a decent price, overall a nice pub.

Yelp
Westow is a funky little spot that is worth trotting out south for. It's a good blend of almost gastro, traditional and trendy, offering a not too bad wine list and good man size portions of food. It is such an off the wall stepping back in time sort of place. The walls a covered with shelfs overflowing with old books, quirky art work, old Chesterfield sofas and vintage chairs and tables. It feels a bit like a living room. In the back there is a pool table and board games are also available. A fantastic place to work from or take a book order a lovely glass of red and curl up on the sofa with a book. Arhh bliss. Ps. there is also a large outside area which is always packed in the summer and they often have a DJ on a Friday and Saturday evenings.

Yelp
A large venue both inside and out. There is limited seating outside, although on a warm summers evening there is never enough but if you are quick you might just be able to bag a table. They have a wide selection of ciders and beers brewed by small breweries. The staff seemed knowledgable on the types of beers available which is always a good sign. I have see. Signs before when they host beer and cider festivals. There are lots of sofas and chairs and tables in the main bar area, nice and comfortable if you are in for the long hall!!! At the back of the pub is a dinning area which has a combination of booths, small to medium tables with a mixture of chairs, so pick wisely if you are going to spend a long time in the dinning area. Once you have a table and have decided what you are go to eat you have to order at the bar and remember your table number. Whilst the menu has staple pub grub on it I found enough variety to make me comfortable ;) I was here on a Friday evening and it was liveliy and had a DJ who played some good tunes. The prices are comparable with similar establishments in the area but it benefits from the outdoor space and the large indoor space. Plenty of busses pass this pub there is a cab station around the corner and Crystal Palace train station is within walking distance. Handy transport if you want a drink or two or even three...

Yelp
A short walk from Crystal Palace Train Station and even shorter from the bus station so great place to not have to drive to! Big venue inside with restaurant at the back if you feel in the mood to stay for food. Comfy sofas and table areas inside with free Wi fi access also. Nice place to come for a quiet drink whilst you work or to catch up with friends in a nicely decorated venue. Both kid and pet friendly with the pub cat there to welcome both! Reasonably sized outside area also which is nice to sit out in and watch the world go by. The park is also very close so easy to pop in for a refreshment after your walk about in there and before you jump on local transport nearby. Lots of restaurants in the area also should you wish to eat something different than their offering. It can get a little loud in the evening with the onsite DJ.

Yelp
Westow House is the Antic pub chain at its best: A huge, airy, high-ceilinged, sprawling building, adorned with a mismatch of wallpaper and decorations that despite trendy still feels individual. An great range of excellent craft beer. Friendly young staff. Good music playing in the background. The beer on draft is well-kept and ever-changing, but their refrigerated selection caught my eye most, with a number from US brewer Rogue, and an unexpectedly superb earl grey infused bitter from Wandsworth brewer By the Horns. There are plenty of places to sit inside and out, including several sofas inside. They also have board games to use for a £5 deposit. I didn't get to try their food but even so, I loved it here. I doubt there's anywhere better in Crystal Palace.

Yelp
Two words for you - new chef. Went here on Saturday for a quick bite even though I'd heard it was a bit hit and missonly to find a tiny but very good new menu of your usual gastro pub stuff (posh burgers, pastas and some nibbly bits). Ordered the chicken burger and was very impressed to find it was proper chicken, well marinated, served on good bread. Chips were fresh, they still had the skins and had obviously been cut by hand and deep fried to order. It only loses a star because drinks are pricey, but you pay for the decor and atmosphere as much as you do the food and drink. I love the walls covered in bookshelves, the trendy dark interiors and the fact they have a selection of board games on offer. Also, the staff are lovely. There aren't many places in London where you'll be complimented on your t-shirt as you approach the bar.

Yelp
Like this place as you can play Table Tennis! That's Right Table Tennis, watch the football and have a great meal. Westow House is also a nice place to chill with a good selection of food, drinks and books. Lovely on a Lazy Sunday.

Yelp
Went here for Sunday lunch, and while I love going and sitting inside - it's so open and welcoming, and there are books everywhere - for £9 the roast dinner was pretty standard. It was a shame really. And it also cost £7.40 for a pint of Youngs bitter and half a Leffe. That's at least £1.50 too much.

Yelp
Poor selection of wines although the place itself is really cool and well decorated. The music was good too, no radio hits which is difficult to find.

Yelp
this place was one of the deciding factors in my boyfriend and i moving to crystal palace! obviously it's very important to have good local bars, and this is one. they have chesterfields, floor to ceiling book cases, reasonably priced, good food, chilled wine, and a friendly ginger cat. A FRIENDLY GINGER CAT. we are moving into our new pad on saturday, and are definitely looking forward to spending (lots) more time here.

Yelp
Sunday roasts are a dangerous business in London, if you can get a seat with ease then there's probably something wrong with it. But the roasts here are the business. And you get KALE. So yeah, kale and beer. Let the good times roll.

Yelp
Good selection of real ales, however the staff have little to no knowledge of the drinks they are serving and are generally disengaged. They would greatly benefit from basic customer service training let alone additional product training. The staff spoil an otherwise good pub.

Yelp
Went here last Friday. Nice relaxed atmosphere with some good soulful/funky house music from the DJ. Staff friendly and not too rammed.

Yelp
Nice, spacious pub with plenty of seating inside. Pool table, pinball, table tennis and board games all make it a great place to meet friends. The menu looked good, but we weren't here to eat. Would consider returning to try the food though. Drinks are on the pricey side so only stayed for a couple.

Yelp
There are two faces to this Pub. During the day and early evening this is a relaxing place to have a drink with a pub cat wondering around, books to read. The food is good and getting better with the new Chef, its moving towards Gastro Pub. After 7 on Fridays and Saturdays its very different. The late evening to night atmosphere is vibrant and fun. I was there recently and they were having a Northern Soulnight which was great. The drinks are London prices but the service is great. My only issue is that as the night goes on you get some of the younger crowd coming in and the vibe changes and gets a little tense. Its a nice cosy pub with good food and a cat. I just wish the doormen would control the drunk teens after 12.

Yelp
Nice pub. Good beer. Ok food, great atmosphere apart fromFri/Sat pm, but then where is there?

Yelp
The Westow House is one of my locals but recently it's become my favourite. Was there Sunday and couldn't get a table as it was so busy, so after speaking to the staff, they actually created a table for my friend and I. Wine selection really great and the sunday roast was outstanding. Other pubs on the triangle should take note: great service and delicious food equals a full pub!

Yelp
Great pub for every occassion. Fri & sat this place is packed, great people and decent drinks. i came on a nice sunny afternoon. Has a nice outdoor area with lots of seating so perfect for a few ciders in the sun. Venue is big and has a relaxed chilled seating area, with a lower ground more formal area. The nibbles from the bar are great with a couple of drinks, so would def recommend.
