I've been a consistent visitor of the Westpac Open Air Cinema over the past 5 years and it just seems to be getting worse every single time.
Two years in a row now I've attended sessions where they have a party boat right behind the screen and you're listening to half the movie and the other half the boats music. If you're running such an elaborate event that brings in an enormous amount of money, there should be care taken that they work with council to not allow party boats within the vicinity during session.
The sound in the session I watched recently was also horrible, I spoke to my party of friends and they all said they struggled to hear the dialogue but the action scenes were overly loud, and certain speakers created echos which were distracting.
These two issues weren't even the the most pressing, this year the inclusion of the Luke Nguyen dining experience was easily the worst part of the night. Our group decided to skip dinner and have it at the cinema, only to find that the Luke Nguyen menu had only a few appetisers and a couple of mains (pre made pad Thai in a take away container)on the menu. The food was overpriced, cold, pre made and are sitting there in mountains at the collection point. The chicken skewers we bought were pink inside and we had to toss because it felt unsafe to eat. The bao's were easily the worst baos I've ever had with cold stale pork, with barely any meat and doused in sauce.
Provided you buy general admission tickets, it's the only food vendor you can eat at, I would definitely skip it and eat prior. To advertise it and associate it with a celebrity chef so as to legitimise it when it's actually garbage food is misleading.
Given the poor quality sound, background noise distractions and the dining experience, I would probably skip this, especially if you've already been before. Such a shame because the initial experiences I'd had with dining and the cinema itself were so much better than what it's become.
