12 Spots for an Exciting Lunch Break in Charlotte

"Is there a better success story than WTF’s move from food truck to restaurant? Greg Williams and Jamie Barnes have turned fast food on its head, with creative takes like lobster mac and cheese fries, housemade tater tots, and burgers. Throw in a few treats like sweet potato bread pudding and a crazy list of milkshakes, including turmeric-tinged Golden Milk, and their signature “yum yum sauce” takes on a new meaning." - Katie Toussaint, Kathleen Purvis

These Black-Owned Businesses Are Shaking up Charlotte’s Food Scene

"After graduating from Johnson and Wales Charlotte, friends and chefs Jamie Barnes and Greg Williams launched the What The Fries food truck out of a former FedEx delivery truck in 2015. After years of long lines, in March the duo opened their first brick-and-mortar location where they hand cut each and every fry. Standouts include their hibachi shrimp fries (topped with bok choy, carrots, scallions, and homemade yum yum sauce) and over-the-top bread pudding tots, and the owners are hoping to expand with additional trucks and a second physical location in 2022."

Local Foodi Truly Authentic

Google
Let me just say...I'm a local and have eaten this food for many years. If any of you real fans know we waited outside at water ridge parkway for this food for a minute via the original food truck. But it wass well earned definitely yes! Now they have a brick and mortar guys and the food is just as amazing. I didn't ask but not sure if they still make the blackberry ketchup but if not I'm still so impressed. This is a moment I won't forget eating this amazing food. I also tried the sweet potato cookies and they were delicious. So listen they are located inside the building I will post pictures not the way you would expect as a store front as Google describes. Look for the big orange sign and you will truly find some good eats. Please comment or share your experience because I'm sure they would love to hear all the great energy. I'm not impartial just impressed. Keep it up guys. I look forward to my next plate in a few days!

Google
Absolutely the most delicious meal I've eaten in a very long time!!! This was my first time going & I will definitely become a regular. Loved the atmosphere and the staff was extremely friendly! They were very helpful with guiding us through the menu making delicious recommendations. Let me tell you, I was not disappointed with the selections. Look at the below photos and you'll understand why my belly thanked me. 😍

The food was really good. We went on a Saturday night after a rush so they were out of some of the things we wanted to try. Bacon cheddar fries were delicious. The truffle fries were ok, but they didn't have as much toppings as the other fries. Burgers were thick, juicy and delicious. We definitely want to go back when they have everything available.

This place is incredible! If you think this is just a fry place, you are incredibly wrong! They serve pure deliciousness! The lady working was incredibly friendly and kind. She took the order quickly and asked us to wait in the purple area for our food. I could smell the food being made and it smelled SO GOOD! We received a text when our food was ready and another extremely friendly lady gave us our food. We went to our car to eat and every bite was a little piece of heaven. The fries were perfectly crispy. The mac and cheese on mine was seasoned beautifully and oh so cheesy. I seriously wish there was one of these closer to me!

1st time at What the Fries! A co-worker suggested eating here and I'm so glad I went earlier today for lunch! I had the steak hibachi fries. They were so good! We tried a side order of the mac and cheese...it was great too. My sister had the crab rangoon fries and loved them. My nephew had the cheese quesadilla which had the decadent mac and cheese inside! To finish our meal, we all ordered the strawberry cheesecake bread pudding and the purple sweet potato bread pudding. Oh my...we loved it! I loved how the employees walked throughout the restaurant checking in on their patrons to ensure we were fine. Will tell others about my dining experience here. Please take my word (and my pics) and try it for yourself! You won't be disappointed! Can't wait to go back!

Well where do I start!!! I walked in here with my daughter and her friend and I always look for the health code rating. 94.5 not to good for me that’s close to a B for sanitation. The young lady at the front was sweet, but I could not eat here because of the grade. Well my daughter and her friend did they orders the lobster Mac with an add on of crab meat and her friend order truffle fries. My daughter said the mac and cheese was dry without the sauce and it was overly salty. I tasted the sauce and it was extremely salty. I have to agree to that. My mouth dried out from that. The truffle fries were salty as well. I tasted that sauce too. It’s not fair to do a review and not at least taste the food. The fries, I know I saw in the reviews that they were fresh cut. THAT’S A LIE!!! Those fries are frozen I know what fresh fries look like and those are definitely frozen. I know when the owner has commented on other reviews when they said they were frozen as well, the owner said they were fresh cut daily. Again those are frozen bagged fries that came in off a truck. Let me tell you something when you come here you will see the fries sitting in a tube by the fryer. #1. Fresh fries have to sit in water until they are ready to fry. Those fries where not sitting in water at all. So the owner can not lie about that. #2. Frozen fries cook up faster than fresh fries.

Love What the Fries in Charlotte NC. The service is fantastic. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. Love the food too. My favorite dish is the lobster mac & cheese fries. We also had the crab Rangoon fries. They were good but would try something different next time! The chicken sandwich with hot honey was amazing- really crispy and well seasoned. Loved the bread pudding tots too! Would definitely get those again!!! Can’t wait to go back.

Google
The food is delicious and worth the hype! I came on a Saturday right at noon and there was a very short line that moved quickly. I ordered the bacon cheese fries and they were fresh and hot, even with the many toppings. My food was brought out approx. 2 minutes after I placed my order and everyone who worked there was incredibly friendly. I am planning to go back soon to try the hibachi fries. 5 stars for the excellent atmosphere, service, and taste!

Yelp
So, I have the pleasure of enjoying their food at the west side fish fry festival last weekend in Charlotte. At the festival, there were several vendors selling various versions of fried fish plates. What the fries booth was situated between three of the most popular stands at the festivals so, I didn't initially notice their menu. However, after standing at adjacent line for over 10 minutes with no movement, we decided to check out what they were offering and lo and behold, the final day of the program. They had a really good deal so we switched lines. Boy, am I glad we did! hopefully the pictures tell the story but this was an enjoyable meal. The fish was fried perfectly. The portion size was perfect and to top it all off they offered a banana pudding which we promptly smashed before we even got to the fish. I definitely am looking forward to my official visit to the restaurant!

Yelp
Oh. My. Gosh. WTF with What The Fries. Essentially, this place is plain french fries with a boatload of toppings. And I'm sold. On their menu, they have a lot of different options in combination. You can also add proteins on top. My friend and I got the french fries. But they also had other sandwiches and more hearty options. The sauce and the toppings were all incredible and gosh I wish they weren't so far away from me. But it's probably best for my stomach and my wallet. I'll have to keep an eye out on their food truck, I just hope that they come up north a little bit more !

Yelp
I am beyond proud of this business! I have been supporting them before they had a physical location. Their food truck was always in different locations around the city & there were plenty of happy customers! Walking into the physical location, I was greeted with great customer service by the staff & the place is well decorated. I didn't have to wait long for my food and it was fresh & hot !! I am obsessed with the shrimp hibachi fries. I will be back soon
google avatar

Yelp
After realizing my last review was based on the food truck, I wanted to be sure to provide an update for their restaurant. Not much has changed since the last review. They still offer top-notch food and service! Simply put.....these guys just do not miss! Everything that was ordered at the table was hot and delicious. And who knew that a French fry could taste so be good?!? Their in-house hand cut fries can be topped with literally anything and it would be a win. Keep doing what you're doing!

Yelp
Went to their brick and mortar location twice now. Each and everytime there's lines no matter what time it is.. But omg, it's sooo good. I had their steak hibachi with their house made yum yum sauce. And I can just die. The steaks are nicely done. Melted in your mouth. Their bok choys and veggies were nicely sautéed. Still have their slight crunchy and so is their fries. My son had their Mac and cheese topped over fries. And omg this boy loves their yum yum sauce. We spent $3 for extra extra sauce. He loves their burger with yum yum sauce on it of course. Service can take a bit longer because they are alway busy and prepares when order comes in.. Nothing left sitting out.. which I love. It's a drive for me since this location is in Pineville across from NOVANT but it was worth it

Yelp
Hands down the most amazing food! Was visiting family and in town , decided to stop in for a late night dinner. Best decision hands down! Listen, this place was delivered! Amazing service and the Ambiance was clean , inviting, with music and friendly staff. The red velvet cake was sold out by the time we got there unfortunately , but i heard great things. Also make sure you try their house made sauce, it's so good. 100/10 your loss if you don't come through.

Yelp
What The Fries is often imitated, but never duplicated. I have been a loyal customer since the original food truck years ago. Since opening the brick and mortar location, they continue to evolve and experiment with new flavors. I can't get enough of the hibachi style fries with homemade yum yum sauce. The burgers and chicken sandwiches never disappoint. Today was chicken dinner night and I was able to pre-order online and pick up my meal with no wait. This consisted of 3 pieces of fried chicken, 2 sides, cornbread, dessert tots and a drink! Special sauces on the side topped it all off. Honestly, I'm starting to think they just can't mess up. The staff are all so sweet and patient. And lastly, the decor in the restaurant is just the cherry on top, it makes you proud to be a part of the Queen City.

Yelp
I'm literally just back to say *drool* Next time we went, got 2 orders of the bread pudding. FYI: for anyone wondering...leftover bread pudding tots are amazing because it's just as delicious the next day. Round 2!!!

Yelp
After trying the food truck, was able to try the brick and mortar location. It had the same BANG as the food truck and was really good! Tried the Veggie Hibachi Fries this time and although meatless, was just as good as the other options! Staff was still amazing and the location had plenty of seating! Located on Park Road off of 485 in Pineville. Definite MUST TRY!!

Yelp
From food truck to storefront. I've been hearing about What the Fries (WTF) for quite sometime however their massive food truck line never gave me a chance. Well, today WTF was not only a delicious experience but a nostalgic one as well. From the dope art pieces, games, arcades to 90s R&B playlist, its definitely a vibe. This was my first time having a oxtail quesadilla along with their classic fries and Mac & Cheese but it was just what I need to remind me a taste of the 90s is never too far away. If you are a fry lover, What the Fries is a must try.

Yelp
I'm so mad at myself for not trying their restaurant earlier. So many missed opportunities to show this place off to friends in town. I'll admit I was a little suspicious of the quality of the food when they open a B&M as I only knew them as a food truck. But they surpassed my expectations. Absolutely delicious! I mean fries loaded down with all your favorite toppings is good but they take it a step further with their creative ideas and suggestions! Atmosphere is fun with cool aesthetics and upbeat fun music to complement the vibes. I believe they were playing Push it by Salt n Pepper and I was all about it! Service- Outstanding Food - Hibachi Chicken! OMG. The sauce was amazing! Leftovers? Tons of it and tasted as just as I ordered (hard to do with fries). Definitely will be back!

Yelp
While out here visiting a friend from my hometown who moved out here 10 years ago, I wanted to get some homegrown food experiences in before hanging out at some of the more traditional upscale foodie spots in the area. My friend suggested What The Fries and said they make gourmet fries. I gave him the, "seriously...." face an he reassured me it would be good. Well, it wasn't good...it was GREAT! I ordered the lobster mac n' cheese fries and a milkshake. Now before you read any further, take my advice and do NOT eat cheesy french fries and a milkshake to eat together unless you just want to torture yourself later. The fries were AMAZINGGG and what set them off was the red cabbage. Something about the texture of the cabbage with the lobster an crispy fries were just awesome. I barely finished the lobster mac an forgot I still had a milkshake to finish lol I'm glad I started my foodie adventure here.

Yelp
I've been waiting over a year to try this place and y'all....I think I ordered the wrong thing (insert crying face emoji). I wish they had half orders because I would be so much more enticed to come back. After being greeted with no line in front or back I started to ask the lady in the front for suggestions. I asked her whether I should go with a wrap, Mac & cheese fries or chicken hibachi fries. She said of the three she's only had the chicken hibachi fries and I asked if she liked them and she said yes so that's what I got. The line was picking up behind us so I hurried up and chose. The fries were served in a timely manner and were visually hot which is awesome. Presentation is amazing. My hibachi fries had a cut up breaded chicken tender on top with delicious Yum Yum sauce spread across the chicken. Here's where I went wrong... I ate all of my chicken first and then I was left with a huge boat fries and slaw. I don't like slaw ...(dumb of me to order this I know) but chicken tenders and Yum Yum sauce called my name. There's an extra charge for more sauce and the line was long so I just gave up and tossed it. Now my friend ordered the lobster Mac and cheese fries and I'm so mad I didn't get that. Not a huge lobster fan but the mac & cheese was so good. From just tasting his I know that if I would've ordered the mac & cheese fries it would have been a 5 star experience but you know.... had to learn for myself. Anyways, it was more of a three star experience for me but I don't wanna be a hater so I'll give four. Like I said, I've been waiting over a year to try them so it's a bummer that my craving wasn't satisfied but maybe one day I'll be back.I

Yelp
We were in the area and decided it was time to finally check out what so many people have been talking about. We were not disappointed. We came pretty close to closing time so we had to take the food to go but we didn't mind. We ordered the Lobster Mac and cheese fries and the shrimp hibachi fries. There a few gluten free options so just keep that in mind. I loved the lobster Mac and cheese fries. It is a decent sized meal. I didn't need really anything more afterwards so that's all I ordered. My significant other had the shrimp hibachi fries and since there weren't many GF options , he had to pick pretty carefully. It wasn't quite enough for him but he has a tremendous appetite. Definitely worth a stop! You will thoroughly enjoy it

Yelp
PSA: order the sweet potato bread pudding and thank me later. Hot and fresh out the kitchen... Great spot! Lots of delicious fries options, burgers, milkshakes and bread pudding made with taters. You order as you enter and then sit down, and they call your name when your food is ready. Beware it's a popular spot so there might be a line out the door, but it moves quickly. My first time coming I had the shrimp hibachi fries and this time I had the burger and then the bread pudding. Highly recommend the shrimp hibachi fries and obviously the desserts. The burger was good too, but I liked the other things better. Loved the vibe of the space too with lots of cool art and murals.

Yelp
This place is hot and new on the scene. Concept is great, fry base and a variety of toppings. I got the lobster Mac fries and my kids got the hibachi and a burger. Food was delicious however I would suggest eating the food in the restaurant as it does not travel well. Also prices are high b/c the quality of the product is top notch. There was so much lobster on my fried and not chucks but whole claw meat. The burger was huge and made to order. The steak on the hibachi was cooked perfectly. So don't complain b/c it's worth every penny.

Yelp
Yoooooo! If you're into loaded fries, THIS IS THE PLACE TO GOOOO!! This was my first time and won't be the last. The place is pretty colorful, laid back, good music playing and overall a fun vibe. Staff were all lovely and friendly. The FOOD WAS AMAZING. Ordered: the Mac n cheese fries (excellent), hot fries (fun!), hibachi chicken and hibachi shrimp (amazing!! They did not skimp on the shrimp!! LOADED with shrimp!!), the oxtail quesadilla (omg that meat was tender and full of flavor), kids meal cheeseburger fries (tasty!), banana pudding (ended up ordering two more to go!), and a milkshake (so much fun and tasty)! I'm happy with our visit and cannot wait to return to try some other of their flavors! Support Black business, y'all, especially this one!!

Yelp
Not only is the food amazing but the experience of it all as soon as you step inthe door, makes the drive i made from VA worth it. The food portions are plentiful. The cashier and manager and staff all greet and address you with loving arms. The Art Deco and graffiti walls encompass the culture that defines this establishment. Now the food, huge portions!! No way you can eat it without sharing it. Had the cheese steak, lobster Mac and cheese, and banana pudding in a cup. ALL OF IT was mouth watering delicious. Definitely worth the trip to Charlotte....!!
google avatar

Neema B.

Yelp
One of my favorite food trucks now has a restaurant. And I finally had a chance to visit it recently. We arrived around 2:00 on a Saturday afternoon and there was a pretty long line outside since there is limited space for you to wait in line inside the restaurant. It moved fast, I think we waited about 25 minutes in total. It was a hot day but the sidewalk is covered so at least we were in the shade. Once inside, ordering was easy and the person taking our order was friendly. I ordered hibachi fries with steak and shrimp and it was ready in 10 mins or less. There is a long bar inside where you can retrieve your order. The fries were amazing, as always!! The ingredients were fresh, the steak was tender and the seasoning was on point. I have never had a bad meal from the food truck and I've been several times; the food I had at the restaurant tasted the same as what I've gotten off the truck. Speaking of the food truck, they also had that parked in the lot. Nice reminder lol
google avatar

Yelp
If you're in Charlotte, you HAVE to try What the Fries! Honestly, you probably couldn't go wrong with anything on their menu. We got the hibachi chicken fries and the flaming hot fries with bacon added. Even though it does seem a bit pricey, it's totally worth it because the portions are huge and very filling. They do not skimp out on anything! They are both quality and quantity. The crispy chicken for the hibachi chicken fries was delicious! The chicken was crunchy, but still moist and tender. The bacon on the flaming hot fries was unlike any other bacon I've ever had. It had just the right amount of seasoning and wasn't overly salty or greasy. All of their combinations just work - everything was delicious and flavorful! Staff was friendly and efficient. The location is very spacious and social distancing protocols were met. I'm still thinking about their fries after I ate there! I can't wait to come back to try something else!

Yelp
Finally had a chance to visit the first What The Fries locations. I've visited the food truck a few times but I was happy to hear they finally have a building. My order was ready in a matter of minutes which is awesome for a Friday. All the staff wore mask and social distancing was enforced. The cashier was knowledgeable about the menu and patient while I decided what to order. Resturant: the location is spacious with plenty of seating. They have a separate waiting area for to go orders which is great for social distancing. Order: Hibachi Fries with Shrimp 5/5 Snapper Fish Sandwich 5/5 The hibachi fries with shrimp are my absolute favorite dish. The size of the order is pretty big for one person. You could have this as meal by itself. The smell and taste are amazing. I love the combination or flavors from the carrots and yumm sauce with the shrimp and fries. Im convinced yummy sauce makes everything taste delicious. The Snapper Sandwich was delicious and bigger than expected. It comes with two pieces of fried snapper on a toasted bun with lettuce and yumm sauces. It comes with spicy yummy sauce but I'm not a fan of spicy. Both dishes were amazing. It was so much food, I had to take break to finish. I highly recommend a visit. Next time, I have to remember to order the dessert or a milkshake.

Yelp
First off the customer service was EXCELLENT!!! This was my first visit and definitely not my last. The atmosphere was a VIBE with 90s R&B playing as you eat. Now the food.....was delicious who has ever heard of OX TAIL QUESADILLAS?! So I just had to try it.....This place was also boyfriend approved.... Definitely check them out if your in the area!!!
google avatar

Charity R.

Yelp
Omg! Why didn't anyone tell me?!? This place is amazing!! We ordered the cheeseburger quesadilla & the oxtail quesadilla. We also ordered the steak hibachi fries. When I tell you that there's enough food to share, I mean it. We could've just ordered the fries & been done with it. The servings are massive & they aren't skimpy on the toppings. I love the fact that it's a black owned establishment that started as a food truck & successfully expanded to an actual restaurant. Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Frieda M.

Yelp
Amazing experience! The food was delectable!!! We both ordered the Hibachi fries with shrimp. The shrimp was plentiful in the dish! The serving size was perfect and we were satisfied! The service was great, and the food was well seasoned! We loved the vibe of the restaurant! Oh and the restrooms were clean. Hand sanitizer was available for each table. We will be back!
google avatar

Ethan L.

Yelp
Finally got to try this place! Been following them for a while and mouth waters every time I see their food. It for sure lived up to expectations. All staff was super friendly, attentive, and personable. Again good was incredible. Had the Mac n cheese fries and honey chicken fries (special). So much flavor and love is poured into this. I wish I could come here more often. If ever on the area I will be back!

Yelp
I am so glad I finally got to try this place! I live a good ways away, but was on that side of town so decided to check them out because everyone speaks highly of their food. The word of mouth was accurate, everything was delicious! I ordered lobster Mac and cheese and the bread pudding tots for dessert. I'm pretty picky about my Mac and cheese, but theirs was delicious and not dry at all. The mix of cheeses (Boursin, Gouda and Asiago) was perfect and the cheese was very melty. I wish I could post the video I took! There was a healthy portion of lobster chunks in the Mac and cheese, which I was grateful to see. I made a last minute decision to order the tots and i am joyful that I did. Big bread pudding fan, and the purple sweet potatoes just made it even better mixed with the toppings. I also loved seeing all the local artists work in the building. I'll be back soon!

Yelp
This place is french fry heaven! Loaded fries are one of my top 5 in favorite foods. PLUS it's black owned and has a food truck. I ordered the Cheesy Gooey Fries and added bacon and shrimp. One word. BOMB!!!!! Everything came hot and the cheese was melting on my fork and in my mouth. This place has been in my dreams, them fries have me in a chokehold I swear. I've been dying to go back and eat! I did a reel on IG - StephColleen

Yelp
My fix was finally satisfied and I couldn't have been happier. Sometimes when you see food in pictures, you finally go to try and it doesn't live up to the expectation. However these lobster mac fries....I think my plate sums it up for you. When it comes to seafood like lobster rolls and fries, many times people short you. But I promise this was not the case. It was lobster on top of lobster and seasoned well at that. Even the mac and cheese that came with it was just as good. Customer service was great, it wasn't too busy when we walked in, and they were more than helpful when we dined in. I'd definitely return again. If you go try the lobster mac and cheese. You won't regret it. You may need a nap and have to burn off the calories after but it'll be worth it.

Yelp
Amazing food from start to finish. Cool chill spot for a quick bite and also the service is nice. Even enjoy their food trucks around the city.

Yelp
What food truck would cause people to stand in the rain during quarantine during their neighborhood food truck event? Only the What the Fries food truck! There was a crowd of people waiting to get their food. Thank goodness I placed a preorder. I decided to get the Shrimp Hibachi Fries and the Bread Pudding for the day. The fries were amazing as always. I'm not a huge seafood fan so I think I preferred Shrimp and Steak fries. The yum sauce really add a great taste to the fries and shrimp. I never knew the flavor of the bread pudding but it was so good. It was my favorite out of the two items I ordered. Since I placed a preorder I got there a few minutes beforehand and was told the items would be ready at 6 the time I had scheduled to pick up. They were ready right on schedule and were piping hot. So happy I placed the preorder and didn't have to wait in the rain like so many others! I really wished they had other items available but since it is quarantine time I totally understand and am happy for what I was able to get. The What the Fries truck is definitely a must try. Yelp
This is the place where diets go to die. I have been following this restaurant on Instagram for some time now. I finally decided to give them a try. There are so many good lookin' options to choose from. The cashier was very nice and even had a few recommendations for a first timer including the cheeseburger quesadilla, oxtail quesadilla and what you see in my photos the chopped cheese sandwich. Everything was amazing. Sandwich gave a Philly cheesesteak kinda feel to it and the fries were hand cut and fried by someone's grandmother lol just kidding but hopefully you get where I'm going with this one.
google avatar

Bree B.

Yelp
This place is amazing! I ordered the crab rangoon fries and sweet potato bread pudding. My friend ordered the steak hibachi fries. All items were delicious. They give me plenty of food and I ended up having leftovers. It is a bit pricey but I'd go again.

Yelp
This is restaurant is amazing! I waited outside in the rain to eat at this place! Their food truck would come to my job but I couldn't try it because of the long lines. However, we were near the business after a day of running errands and decided to stop in. There was a small line at 3 pm when we went and we didn't mind. That said to us that this business is good. When it's your time to order, you will order at the front and wait until your name is called. Super simple. Your order comes out fast. We order the chicken finger sandwich, burger, and lobster Mac and cheese fries. The sandwiches and burgers come on a purple potato bun and that made a world of a difference. It added an extra flavor that i didn't know i needed. Everything was cooked to perfection. The lobster Mac and cheese fries were to die for! It's definitely big enough to share! They were so good and packed so much flavor

Yelp
Who doesn't love loaded fries? Nice environment, I loved that they played older hip hop. Great service. My only complaint is as unique as their toppings are, I wish the fries were seasoned before adding the toppings or at least have salt and pepper on the tables. I'm glad they have a sit down location. I'll be back.

Yelp
This plays has an overwhelming amount of options! It was so hard to choose but luckily just about everything I had was amazing! Would definitely get the quesadilla again. Wasn't too fond of the crab rangoon fries because I didn't know it would be such a huge amount of crab in the shape of balls. Other than that this is a 10/10 location for a tourist like myself.

Yelp
I have been wanting to try WTF for awhile and finally got the chance to do so. I was not disappointed. I had been delaying trying them because they didn't have a physical location and then when they finally had a physical location all I heard about were how long the lines were. Finally decided to try it on a Saturday. Parking/Wait time: They are located in a shopping complex with lots of parking so you shouldn't have an issue finding parking unless you are trying to park close. This place gets busy so go on an off time if you can. We went on a Saturday afternoon and there was a line. It took about 20-30 minutes to get to the register. Atmosphere/ambience/COVID: No complaints. The inside reminds me of a high school cafeteria. No frills spot but I loved the theme/decor. There was hand sanitizer everywhere which was great. However, there wasn't much spacing between tables. Service: No complaints. You order at the register. I can't remember if we had to pick up our food when it was ready or if they bring it to you but they don't wait on you while you eat. Food: The food was definitely worth the wait. I ordered the lobster mac and cheese fries and the chicken sandwich. I was excited and overwhelmed by the amount of food. :-) My only complaint was the mac and cheese on my fries didn't add anything. I would have been happy with just the fries and lobster. My friend loved his double burger and steak hibachi fries. He said it is now his favorite burger in Charlotte. Overall: Would I return? Absolutely.

Yelp
WTF!!! That's right What the Fries!! They never cease to amaze me every time I hunt them down and stalk the location of where the food truck will be each day . You can simply go on their website and check the days and times of what pop up location the food truck will be at each day. Did I mention they were also featured on the food network Chanel ? Which they deserved every bit of that screen time. To name a few of the items I have tried thus far . Shrimp hibachi, their famous chicken sandwich and truffle fries . I'm going to keep this review short n sweet (go now )!!

Yelp
What the Fries is worth the hype! The restaurant has a great vibe in colors, wall art and even an NBA Jam arcade game. And the loaded fries are delicious and well portioned for the price. We tried the chopped cheese and bacon loaded fries. The fries were still crispy underneath the mounds of toppings. We'll return and try other menu items. The staff was also super friendly and helpful in navigating the process for ordering. 5 stars all the way. Clean, plenty of free parking and good seating space inside.

Yelp
We started from our place to drive around the town and felt trying something unique and tasty, thought to give this place a try (as the name sounds fancy ). This did not disappoint us at all. We ordered just one hibachi chicken fries as we weren't sure how it will come out as. Damn they were so good that we regret not ordering more. We had to wait for almost 20-25 mins and I think if you order to take out it will be faster. Anyways, great combination of Chicken and fries. Definitely worth a try. Your taste buds will be satisfied.

Yelp
This place thinks way too highly of themselves. The food was fine, but well overpriced. To boot, even though I bought chicken tenders, the staff outright refused to give me sauce. The people calling out orders rudely told me sauce was $1 extra. They rudely told me to get back in a long line to pay. My entire party of 6 was already served. Mind you, each person spent around $20 apiece for the food. Every member was argumentative, and acted as if I was a Karen for not wanting dry chicken. It was bizarre to say the least. I also had the hot Cheetos fries which were underwhelming to say the least with very little hot Cheeto dust. The most liked item from the table was turning the hibachi fries into a wrap. I was very excited for this place only to be greatly annoyed after being talked to rude numerous times. It truly was an absurdity for the level of trouble getting it turned into. They also made some remarks as we left about the table which was strange given that we cleaned up.

Yelp
Visited on a Friday evening. There was no wait and not many people dining inside the restaurant. The service was good. The guy at the front was very friendly and able to make recommendations. I was bummed to see that the menu had recently changed so the things I wanted to try were no longer available. We tried the smoky bacon fries and the fish sandwich which was recommended. The fries were great. They really had a good flavor. The fish sandwich was very mediocre and lacked seasoning in my opinion. It was almost overly crunchy. The restaurant displayed some cool art pieces and had a fun 90's vibe. I would definitely return in the future to try more fries but would skip the fish sandwich.

Yelp
Why haven't we tried them before?! Every time they are in our area we overthink it and then all the spots are taken. This go around we made sure to place our preorder the day before. I received a text message the following day when they started and finished my order. There were no issues with time, the food was ready during my selected pickup time. We ordered a burger, a chicken sandwich, truffle fries, a side of lobster Mac n cheese, and bread pudding. The food was delicious! Solid burger and chicken sandwich but the fries, Mac n cheese, and bread pudding are the real deal! The portion sizes are large so you get your money's worth. I will be keeping an eye on them for the next time they are in my area.

Yelp
Wow! My girlfriend and I tried what the fries for the first time on Saturday! We both got burgers and we shared the lobster mac and cheese fries. The fries are definitely a 10/10 ! The manager was very nice he went around to all the tables in the restaurant to check up on customers and he cleaned tables as well! Though he was busy the manager still took the time out to explain the menu and answer my questions about the strawberry shortcake milkshake. He made it sound so good! I definitely have to try it next time! We will be back!

Yelp
Visited on a Wednesday for lunch after the Charlotte snow. The decor was very laid back and chill with aspects of Charlotte and black movies. After looking at the menu and asking a few questions I decided on the veggie hibachi fries and lobster quesadilla, to go. It's an open concept so I was able to see them make my food. Once it was ready, there was another area where I was shown my food, it was bagged, and I was given condiments options of ketchup, mustard, hot sauce, and salt and pepper. I chose hot sauce only. Food smelled so amazing and I couldn't wait to get home to eat. After seeing the portion sizes I realized I had ordered too much food, lol. I started with the quesadilla which was 4 good size pieces. In one of the slices there was a piece of a lobster shell. The quesadilla was good but nothing really special. The fries was my purpose of going so I was ready to dig in and they were so delicious. Once I got started I couldn't stop. That hibachi sauce was A1. I was able to get toppings with each bite of fries. The fries were as crispy as could be seeing as I took them to go. I was very satisfied with my fries and highly recommend.

Yelp
If you didn't know - What the Fries has A LOT MORE than just fries - they also have a crispy chicken sandwich - (deep fried chicken strips, yum yum drizzle, garlic mayo, house pickles), and MASSIVE tater tots! If you haven't had anything ube flavored before, fear not - it's just a slightly sweet, yam flavor - it's not overpowering and is mellow! Other items featured (because of course - you still have to get the fries): Burger on a Ube bun Mac and Cheese Fries Shrimp Hibachi Fries Chicken Hibachi Fries *Just a pre-warning that consuming WTF Fries food may induce an afternoon nap - so make sure to factor that in. For my Charlotte OG's - WTF Fries replaced CiCi's pizza on Park Road extension near the Pineville area. It's pretty easy to spot - everytime I come there's a line out the door! @feisty.eats

Yelp
After stalking this place for about a year, I was finally able to be in the right place at the right time. It seemed unreal to finally be in the presence of the great "What the Fries" truck. After hearing so much about them and seeing those awesome pictures, it was finally my turn. I ordered the lobster mac fries, with a double cheese burger. After waiting a short while (I made sure to come early because I heard how long their line can get) I was able to get my food. Ah, the weight of that container let me know that it was about to get real. After getting to my car I was able to snap a picture. OMG! The pictures did not lie. It looked even better than the picture that I took. After getting home, I was able to get my first taste. The fries were crunchy even under the cheesiness of the lobster mac. The lobster pieces tasted like the real deal. This was definitely not any of that imitation stuff. I took a bit of my burger... perfection. The meat was flavorful, the bun was soft, the cheese was perfectly melted, and the garlic mayo esd the icing on the cake. Let me tell you, this burger was huge. After two bites, I wrapped it up for later so that I could focus on the lobster mac fries. Even then I could only eat half. Needless to say, today I became a true fan of "What the Fries". After such a long time of waiting to try it, it was definitely worth the wait. If you get the opportunity, check them out. I know you'll love them too.

Yelp
Hands down the most COVID-19 friendly restaurant. They have hand sanitizer on each table. You MUST wear a mask upon ordering and dining in. If you don't have a mask, you can buy one there, .50 cent per mask. ALL employees was wearing their mask CORRECTLY (that means coving MOUTH AND NOSE). FOOD: the fries was yummy. I came with a lot and I was unable to eat it all. Now I did have the Mac & Cheese and I was not a fan. A litte to water down for me. I'm really picky with my Mac & Cheese. INSIDE: sooo 90's!! I LOVE! The whole vibe even the music.

Yelp
I heard about their food truck but could never make it during the scheduled hours. So when I heard they were opening a new location in Charlotte I made it a point to visit. I was pleased with the staff and service we received. The cashier explained the variety of loaded fries they were famously known for. She also recommended the wings and chicken sandwich. This black-owned establishment deserves a visit. We are definitely going back to try the loaded shrimp fries and dessert. What we ordered Lobster Mac-N-Cheese Crispy chicken tender sandwich w/yum yum sauce on a potato bun Sweet & Spicy wings Fresh cut fries If you go on a Saturday, I recommend going at 11 am when they open. The line can get pretty long during lunch.

Yelp
My sister and I were looking for a quick, yet fulfilling meal. Via Yelp, we found What the Fries. It was truly worth the visit. There was no line on a Saturday afternoon and they cooked the food fresh. We both ordered the Chopped Cheese Sandwich which is their take on a cheeseburger. 8 oz. Burger Patty - Chopped| Lettuce | Tomato | Red Onions | Boursin Cheese Sauce. OMG...it was delicious!!!! Melt in your mouth type of OMG. The combo came with a side of seasoned fries and a refillable soft drink. I plan to visit again to explore more of the creative menu. Brilliant concept!
