The 38 Essential Restaurants in Detroit

"The city’s first Black-owned, takeout-friendly food hall provides Detroiters with several food vendors in a convenient location on the city’s westside: a barbecue spot called Detroit Wild Pit, offering St. Louis-style pork ribs; customizable rice bowls from Poon’s Hibachi Grill; smashed sliders from Crazy Burger; refreshing blended drinks from Your Perfect Blend Smoothie Shop, oxtail mac ‘n cheese from Noodle ‘n Cheese, Heavenly Chicken and Waffles, Life is Sweets ice cream parlor; and regional hot dogs and pizza with outrageous topping combinations from Bodega, featuring the creations of Pizza with Attitude. Each food stall is tightly packed within the single-story former office building, so keep in mind that space is limited and dining will likely need to take place elsewhere." - Serena Maria Daniels

Whatcha Wanna Eat is the first Black-owned food hall to open in Detroit | Eater Detroit

"Opened completely under the radar on Detroit’s westside, I found Whatcha Wanna Eat—said to be the first Black‑owned food hall in the city—revealed itself to massive crowds during its opening weekend in a single‑story space on McNichols. Founded by husband-and-wife duo Bobby and Gena Bailey, the couple converted a former rental hall (one property the Baileys had owned for about 25 years) into a nine‑vendor food hall that they paid to renovate largely out of pocket and financed using revenue from their nearby small businesses (Cafe 6, the Beauty Cafe, and Spud Headz). The hall features a variety of cuisines from vendors who pay a deposit plus $3,000 a month and are responsible for supplying extra equipment; most visitors learned of the opening via social media or word‑of‑mouth. Crowds and cramped, narrow stall layouts have produced long wait times and confusing lines, and parking is a challenge in the residential‑bordering business district, though the Baileys hope to add a small outdoor patio for seating. The organic buzz even attracted Detroit native TikTok reviewer Keith Lee and drew interest from local media and Mayor Mike Duggan’s office about a potential ribbon‑cutting, while neighbors and visitors have expressed gratitude for a more diverse dining option closer to the community. The hall is at 10625 West McNichols and is open 11 a.m.–9 p.m. Tue–Thu, 11 a.m.–10 p.m. Fri–Sat, and noon–6 p.m. Sun." - Serena Maria Daniels

Google
This was my first time visiting What You Wanna Eat and I was pleasantly surprised by the wide variety of food vendors to choose from! It’s a great concept that brings the community together while supporting local, independent businesses. I ordered from the Hibachi vendor and went with the chicken and steak hibachi fried rice. I requested my steak medium well, and while the presentation was great, the fried rice was a bit undercooked and the steak came out well done. Service was great! That said, I appreciate the effort and flavor, and I’ll definitely be back to give them another try. It’s a fun spot overall and I’m excited to explore more of the vendors next time!

It’s great to see so many black owned food spots in one venue. Great hub for the community. They even host events for the locals. Seating is limited indoors but has tables outside. Street parking Is also limited so find parking wherever you can. Everything from wings to hibachi, ice cream to Mexican, seafood to smoothies. Question truly is what do you want to eat???

This place is PHENOMENAL. The vibes were very much warm and fun. It was so much black excellence, and seeing all the different concepts was so dope. I got a smoothie that was the best I'd ever had in my life. And a brisket mac and cheese bowl. Both I would give 5 stars. If you're looking for a cool and fun spot to grab a bite and vibe out, this is the place.

My son and I tried the smoothies for the first time, they were phenomenal! Perhaps the best eight dollars I've spent all year. ( I had the green gobling). If you haven't been, you need to go.! There are several restaurants within the food court. I love the italian sausage macaroni bowl! Wing fellas is definitely a must have. Their food is cooked to order. It's worth the wait. The oyster bar. It's perfect to satisfy that quick seafool.Boil craving.

I was so excited to eat the location and it’s worth the wait. Super great food options that are social media ready to post. Love the food and the desserts. Con: No parking and if the establishment is crowded it’s super hot!

Finally something good for us by us. Must admit, didn't have high expectations. But oh baby! The variety of options from ribs wings tacos and everything in between. Place was clean, service was (just alright). If your from Detroit, you know) But the food was awesome. Try the taco spot for sure. That Doritos steak nacho, awesome. ( Them damn jalapenos though, hot af 😲😲). But I like hot, so it was perfectly hot for me. Also hit the smoothie spot. I got the chocolate banana... The bomb. And the prices.. very reasonable. Detroit is on the rise. And we have to keep our small black businesses on the rise as well. I recommend this spot 9/10

Google
I’ve gotten a few meals here just out of convenience. But I’m not certain I’ll be returning. The waffle spot was decent, until they gave me 1 turkey bacon. The smoothie spot is right on. Then I went to the cornmeal spot where there was some sort of meat in my rice and beans for $27. Not worth it anymore. I probably won’t be returning.

Google
This is the first lack owned food truck I have ever been to. They had a good selection of food . I ended up ordering the wings at one place then ice cream at another. Everything was delicious no complaints. I am definitely going back to try the rest of the spots in there.

Yelp
September 22, 2023 The wait time is Long. Borderline Tacos + Things Of course, I ordered beef birria. My wait was from 355p til 425pm. (I was hungry) My side of cilantro rice was "wet," mostly like a "risotto," according to my friend. HEAVY on cilantro, doe. I liked it. The (3) birria were in corn tortillas, and the consume was delicious. I wish I was given more than 1 lime. Aside from the non rush hour 30 minute wait, I enjoyed my 1st restaurant choice from there. Friend got Wing Fellas tangy bbq "wings" (10. damn wing DINGS) Sauce was good.

Yelp
This is a very neat concept and I'm happy to see and support black businesses in black neighborhoods in Detroit. You can dine in or get your order to go like most people. Customer service was great at the two establishment I dined at. I ordered a chicken and waffles dinner from A Taste of Heaven. I don't fried food at home so going out and having some really good fried chicken is a treat. I enjoyed my meal from here. The only downside was my potatoes were overly salted and had too much butter in them. They had good flavor but I couldn't finish them. I like how they be vented my carry out order by poking holes in the top so the food could stay crispy. I got a few desserts from the Life Iz Sweets counter. I really enjoyed the key lime cupcake. It was very tasty but on the small size for a cupcake that was $5. Would I buy it again? Yeah, it was really good! I'd definitely come back here to try other vendors. Hopefully, they will expand to the available space next door. I'd like to see more healthy food options though. A salad bar or vegan/vegetarian restaurant would be great. I can't wait to come back. Parking sucks so beware of that but it's definitely worth a visit or 2 or 3...

Yelp
It feels unfair to rate here based off the food since each restaurant is its open separate business and deserves their own reviews. We've tried several different spots inside and it can be hit or miss from food quality to service. I'm rating based off the hall itself. It's only been open about six months and somehow it's starting to look rundown already. Each time we've been, I haven't noticed anyone wiping down tables or cleaning up. The counters have divots in between the wood planks and they're filled with crumbs and trash. Lots of stickiness. The paint is chipping away. It would make a difference to have a staff person moving around and cleaning up and helping to guide guests on their different choices. It can be difficult to move past people when it's busy. We'll be back. None of this deters us completely or takes away from it being a dope concept with crave worthy menu items. The kids still love it despite long wait times. We probably won't eat inside though and maybe wouldn't suggest it to our friends without disclaimers.

Yelp
I was bad with the photos this time sorry guys!! But when I say this place is amazing! It's truly a gem of them city. Going in I was amazed by the establishments aesthetics, very lively. They had at least 7 different places to choose from, like bakery hibachi barbecue soul, food, Mexican food, and fresh juices, and smoothies. I will definitely be back

Yelp
Inside the food hall we tried 3 different places. 1. Delectabowls 2. Poons hibachi Grill 3. Life is Sweetz 1. The delectabowl was delicious. I ordered the comfort bowl which was coleslaw, pulled pork and cornbread all mixed together, it was so fulfilling the coleslaw was just right and the pulled pork mixed with the bbq pulled it all together. 2. The hibachi was DELICIOUS . The steak and shrimp was seasoned good. The veggies were cooked to perfection. Some of the best hibachi I've ever had 3. Lastly we ordered dessert from life is sweetz. There is a variety of options to choose from but we got the Banana pudding with a twist. The twist was strawberry cake layered at the bottom. Which was a very surprising twist but it was so good There are 7 more restaurants in there that we missed which included a chicken restaurant, taco place, bbq place, burger joint, hot dog (bodega) place, smoothie place and a sandwhich shop but overall everyone in there is so friendly, it is somewhat small, there are seats near the window to sit and wait for the food and to eat but it's not really a dine in type of place

Yelp
Gourmet Crazy Burgers was excellent. I wanted to see for myself, what all the hype was about. I was more than impressed! I ordered a burger "Da Blvd", it was one of the best burgers I ever had. I visited since I was in the area. I decided to 'TRY' the burger before starting the 30 minute drive home. The burger and fries were so good that I finished it. I wanted to place another order to take home but didn't want to be too greedy! LOL. I will return. I highly recommend!

Yelp
We came here from a tiktok recommendation and it was a nice mix of options available. It includes a nice food court option for local black owned restaurants. We had the lemon pepper wings, ranch parmesan tossed curly fries. We had the ribs and Mac and cheese. The wings and fries were delicious and well seasoned. The ribs were delicious with an asian seasoning flair. Mac and Cheese was fresh and cheesy. The ribs took a little longer than expected like a 25 min wait.

Yelp
Everything we tried was SO good. The peach waffle bites from Life is Sweetz were LIFE. We also had Cajun chicken wings from the wing spot and loaded Mac n cheese from the smoke spot. We will definitely be back. Too many good choices for one trip. Service was great at all the shops we went to. It's not fast food but good food takes time. Maybe 15 minute wait at each shop. Worth it. Wish they had a bit more seating but we made it work.

Yelp
So I thought this was a really dope idea that Detroit decided to put on the block. Ever since Keith Lee did his review, people been talking about it so on my visit home I have to give it a shout. Loved it. They have about eight or so different vendors and you can get basically anything you want from popcorn to juices and smoothies to hibachi to burgers to ribs. Everything I had was good, everybody was super nice and the space was very clean. They have places against the wall for you to sit at if you wanted to eat there So it's not like it's a lot if there's a lot of people in there but for a few people, there's plenty of seating. You can actually probably sit outside in a couple of seats if the weather is nice but this time of year, Michigan may not be kind. The smoothie place was great. The smoothie was big fresh and flavorful. I tried wings from the Wing spot, I tried the barbecue spot, and the hibachi spot was good as well. I was with a bunch of people so we all tried everybody's dish so I didn't get all this on my own lol! When I go back? I would. I feel like you have to go back multiple times to try all the things. Not everything was open at the same time which was probably the worst part about it, I heard that the burgers are good but when I was there everything is open except the burger spot which kind of suck but that wouldn't deter me from trying it again. It looks like the burger spot opened up after everybody had gotten all their food and we were all full lol. That's not a deal-breaker, not the end of the world, it just gives me a reason to come back and give it an extra star when I try that.

Yelp
This is an amazing idea, and I hope more cities do it as well. The vibes were great, everyone worked together, and it made for a great experience. There's variety, so there's something for everyone. We chose BBQ, and it did not disappoint. We had corn on the cob, smoked wings, and ribs. The food was super affordable and delicious. I look forward to coming back to try different stalls. The parking wasn't an issue for me. It's on street parking and the side street is residential. We did park in the residential area, and no one had an issue with it.

Yelp
Always A1! Friendly staff and prompt service! If you not up on it, you better get with the program! You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Great lots of choices and tasty options. Enjoyed the over all experience. It's like a luxury cafeteria didn't know which line to jump in! So I choose multiple.

Barb L.

Yelp
Went to Borderline Tacos and Things. Why would a place that claims to serve "Authentic" Mexican food, offer Doritos for Nachos? I can make that at home with Doritos from the grocery store. SMH!

Yelp
this is trash!!! went to the bbq place and this is what i got served! wtf is this! total disappointment!

Sydney T.

Yelp
I loved this place. My family and I couldn't decide what we all wanted to eat. We went here and everyone was able to get the things they wanted. Things w were e slightly on the pricey side but it was SO worth it. My niece had a burger, my fiancé had the hibachi and they devoured their food. The customer service and vibes from the staff were awesome. I REALLY wanted to try the beef brisket at Wild Pit however the lady was unenthused and said they ran out of brisket and I would have had to come earlier . But nonetheless the guys at the burger place were so awesome so it made up for it. I still hope to try the bbq place as long as there is someone else working. But overall great food and service. Wish I could share pics but the food was already gone!

Tyler S.

Yelp
Went to get food at the habachi place. Food was good but the staff was very rude. The lady in the front was very rude. They messed up my food and I called to tell them.. they told me they would remake it. I came up there and they started to argue with me about 2 garlic butters. Just didn't give good vibes at all.
