We hosted a Welcome Party on the Wheat and Water outdoor patio a couple of weeks ago for our daughter's wedding weekend. We worked closely with Andrew on our needs and special requests and he did an amazing job of accommodating our group. Everything from the food and beverage we selected, table placement, and layout of the space, could not have been better. In addition to the party, we had a private family dinner before hand ordering directly from the menu and bar on a separate tab. Everything was delicious. The party food came out hot and on time and was refreshed throughout the evening. Our server, Makenzie, along with Andrew, handled the entire event with grace, efficiency, and humor. The evening could not have been more perfect. Note about the photos, we did bring in some of our own decor!

I went with my coworkers. We got a reservation at 7 on a Thursday, not realizing that they close at 8. We did have to order quickly, but they didn't rush us to eat and get out. I am vegan, so this wouldn't have been my top pick based off of the menu, but my coworkers chose the place, and sometimes restaurants do well with their accommodations. Out of the appetizers we ordered, I could eat the house salad and the brussel sprouts without cheese. The salad was okay but needed more dressing. The brussel sprouts were actually pretty good although they were a touch overcooked. For my main they were able to make me a veggie pizza without cheese. I have had good, flavorful pizzas without cheese, but this wasn't one of them. The veggies were just cut up and tossed on with no thought. No color on them. No seasoning. Bland and boring. Solid three stars.

Google
We normally love wheat and water but ordered takeout and it seemed like they gave us 2 old pizzas that had been sitting for hours. The cheese was hard and crusty and the pizza was really cold. Hoping for a better experience next time! Maybe it was just the takeout issue?

Google
Great spot in Birdrock with a good selection of beers and cocktails to choose from. The margarita special on a Saturday night is worth going in for. Really enjoy their burgers along with the fries, and they do a really good job on cooking the chicken wings so that they are crispy

We went with our family for dinner, granted it was a large group. The pizza was ok and the bacon burger was tasty. The waiter was very soft spoken and did a fair job. Ask me if I wanted a refill on my drink twice, I said yes twice but it never materialized. At time to pay the bill we asked if he could split the bill amongst the family groups of three to four people he said no he couldn’t do that but said “ so split the check into 4 quarters. I ended paying $148 for a 1 pizza, 1 burger and two drinks. Way over priced for mediocre food.

Google
I am not really a pizza person but Wheat and Water was wonderful! The crust is very delicious and everything was well seasoned. The service was nice and the restaurant is a great spot to watch any game night with TVs on most walls. The buffalo wings were super crispy and enough spice to make your nose run and still delicious! The drinks were too dry for our taste but at least you get your moneys worth in alcohol. The mozzarella cheese on our margarita pizza was not melted which made it tough and over powered to pizza. Overall though we will be coming back.

Google
We decided to try this place, as we were in the area and looking for a beverage and a bite. The atmosphere is relaxed and pleasant, and the service was good. Menus are still QR code-only, which is meh. We went with an order of Brussels sprouts, which were acceptably tasty, but honestly, among the oiliest I’ve ever had. I don’t feel that the prices match the quality of the food. A side of French fries is $12! If you’re in the area, I’d recommend, but I wouldn’t go out of my way.

Google
I had reserved a table for outside dining at 6:30pm (perfect for that cool late spring evening). The patio was nice with high-top table stools that gives you a view of the main drag. Note: watch out for the table splinters catching your clothing There is an extensive beers on tap list and pretty good list of wines by the glass (although pricey compared to other places). The pizzas were well-prepared and the combos were compelling.

Yelp
What a great place! All I can say is, if we had service like this in the town I come from, we'd could do a lot more business. Tonight, we come in and they're very welcoming to our family, including the toddlers. Then after the kids spilled stuff off the table the staff has to come and clean up... this adorable waitress, Makenzie, laughs and says, "clean up on aisle one!" She teases the toddler and cleans everything up and asks us what else she can do for us . Oh and by the way, did I tell you how great the food is ? The pizza with bechamel sauce was wonderful and so is the beet salad. This was a really fun night and it's a great restaurant. Oh I forgot to say they also play a great soundtrack: I heard the Rolling Stones at least three times.

Yelp
This is the spot! Our servers, Damon and Mackenzie were the best and the food and drinks were on point. If you are ever in the area, slide through and you will have a great time.

Yelp
IMO- if you can walk there, it's pretty good. I wouldn't drive out of my way to go there. I do go there quite often but they need to step it up a little bit. Bbq chicken pizza is yummy, burger is ok. If you're hungry, you will be happy here!

Yelp
Portions are very generous. I mean hefty as it gets. The service staff- Daemon really took care of our family. He's Knowledgeable of the menu and confident with his answers. We unfortunately have a peanut allergy and he has us at ease. No worries at all. He's got this Swagger but professional side to it. A true asset to the team with a brilliant future The music was great and really set a lively vibe. Can't wait to come back. Corkage fee is $12. Very reasonable if you care to bring your own bottle of wine. One more thing, the cookie a la mode dessert is phenomenal.

Yelp
A group of four of us went for lunch and split two pizzas, and also got drinks. It was the perfect amount of food, and the Pool Boi cocktail was a tasty spin on a mojito type drink. They have indoor and outdoor seating, including a patio are that seemed to be reserved for a private event today. They have lunch and daily specials that the waitress explained once we sat down. She was friendly and helpful the whole time, checking to make sure we were all good and bringing fresh water.

Yelp
$5 draft beers !!! Mia, our waitress, was extremely friendly and attentive as we were celebrating cinco de mayo (eve). Food and drinks came out super fast. There's even a deal where it's $15 for a full pizza and beer. Perfect place to grab a drink with friends on the weekend. You really can't beat $5 drinks... especially in San Diego.

Yelp
I want thank you for the delicious drinks Mia was my bartender so cute and super nice make really good cocktails Great environment and nice place

Yelp
The atmosphere is absolutely great. The location is perfect, the food is wonderful, hands down to chef Junior. We tried the steak, pizzas, salads, dessert, and everything was great. This is our favorite spot from now on.

Yelp
I've been bringing my daughter here once a week since her mom and I split about 18 months ago. I recommend to everyone I know to go, because their cauliflower crust is (was) the BEST. We went today and they changed it--to some cheap imposter. It's like eating paper crackers. So sad. This place has been our "thing", and her treat, and now we are lost, lol. Jack and Monica (and Luke and Molly) are great, and we will miss coming here. Hopefully they wise up and change back to the OG cauliflower crust.

Yelp
I had been wanting to go to Wheat & Water for a while now because people in Birdrock have recommended it to me and they were right - didn't disappoint! It's a casual spot but also cute enough for a date night. Portions are big and great for sharing. We got the linguini and meatballs, caesar salad and cheese pizza. The pizza was by far the best but the meatballs and garlic bread were also so good. If you want to get some wine, the house wine was surprisingly good. It was a french wine from Cotes-du-Rhone, not too dry and not too sweet. We had tons of left overs and were too full for dessert so definitely will have to come back to try those!

Yelp
Great spot for pizza and trivia! The food is wonderful and loved the energy. Also I could actually hear the questions during trivia!

Yelp
I always forget about Bird Rock, but they have such cute restaurants! We met up with friends at Wheat & Water. They made sure we had reservations since this place can fill up quickly on a Friday night. The space has a casual and comfortable feel and we enjoyed sitting on the heated patio. Our food was tasty! I ordered the krabby patty which is a crab cake sandwich. The sandwich was really good! You can order it with either a side salad or fries. I went with the salad, but it had lots of arugula and spicy greens, so make the decision you want and get the fries! Their pizzas are phenomenal. My husband got the gabogool and it was perfectly spicy with crisp and thick meat on top. The crust was perfection! Solid spot!
google avatar

Elana M.

Yelp
Went for pizza and pitcher night and was not disappointed! Any pizza and any pitcher for $11 off? Yes please! So many delicious pizzas to choose from, we went with the Gabagool. Very tasty and spicy! We were sat right away, ended up sitting at the bar and had great service while also getting to catch some of the football game. Will definitely be back to check out their other daily specials, happy hour, and other pizza options!

Yelp
Food was good but the pizzas were very thin and very wet -- the kind you either need to eat with a fork or wrap around the crust. Very messy meal! Wish they were thicker. Went through maybe ten napkins each but they do give you a bucket with napkins and extra utensils so maybe they know. Service was great, very attentive.

Kendall B.

Yelp
So thankful I live so close to this restaurant. Their pizza is insane with clever flavors (my favorite is the classic and baked potato). I love the vibes here and it's always going to keep me coming back :)

Yelp
We love Wheat&Water. Great food-our current fav-the shareable-steak/chimmichuri on a bed of arugula-and toast points-YUMMMMM!! Great service!!Yummy drinks-espresso martinis-and nice Mexi beer. Walkable distance to our house. When you are there, you are family. Great addition to the LJ-BirdRock community. We are glad you are here!!

Yelp
Holy . This place is SO good! I got the ceaser with chicken and meatballs and it was legit the best of both I've ever had! Our sever was Destiny and she was the sweetest most attentive server. A+++ service and food!! Plus I love how they are dog friendly. Muffin also gives the food and service an outstanding review!!
google avatar

Megan S.

Yelp
Went here with some friends on a week night and wasn't overly impressed. I will say the interior is super cute, has that beachy La Jolla feel to it. Lots of tables both indoor and outdoor. Service was so so- took forever to get our initial drink order so we just ordered food and drink at the same time. We ordered a few of the cocktails which all were very sweet, flavors weren't well balanced either so one of them was overwhelming with mint. We ordered a salad and charcuterie board and the kitchen was super slow, given the time we waited for the food I would've thought it would've been higher quality. As we approached closing the team looked antsy walking around eyeing us and made us feel super rushed to finish up and get out. Overall not a bad spot but make sure you've got time and I would go well before closing...
google avatar

Lino V.

Yelp
Pizza was very small. The back of the restaurant was too dark. We had to turn on our phone light to see the menu. Service was ok. You have a horrible happy hr. It's from 4 to 5. It's a joke since people get off at 5. Why don't you have it til 6. Not going to this place again.
google avatar

Yelp
This was a great dinner spot for kids. We were quickly seated, and our waitress brought a paper menu and crayons before we got settled. Their kids menu is great, and the kids had exactly what each wanted. The food came out very quickly and was all good: we shared a bbq chicken pizza and Brussels sprouts, while the kids got a cheeseburger, grilled cheese, and pasta. Good food, and great service that caters to the littles: Wheat and Water is a huge win for parents.

Nico Z.

Yelp
The food here was awesome. First time trying this place as we always drive by. Super cute and great place to watch games or have a good dinner. The pizza was a mix between Italian Neapolitan but also has your classic American pizza taste. Very good food and will be back!
google avatar

Dan B.

Yelp
We came in with a younger kid on a Sunday afternoon and the staff was great and very accommodating. They had the TVs on the football games and coloring for the kid. Pizza was great and just really liked the neighborhood feel of the place.
google avatar

Kyle K.

Yelp
The beer here is fantastic and the eats are excellent as well. The pizza is tasty without seeming too unhealthy or insubstantial. The don't bother me I'm local lager is delicious. It's a neighborhood favorite that I keep coming back to.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a great local gem. Right in the heart of Bird Rock. They have a great indoor/outdoor setup. I love the patio on a sunny day! I also love their brick oven pizzas. The loaded baked potato pizza is my favorite! It's honestly not a flavor I order often but it was delish! They also have a great Tuesday beer & burger special for $22. This includes great craft beers like society pupil. Easy to park & great for a date night or hangout! the staff was friendly & awesome too!

T P.

Yelp
Haley was the best!!!! Best food place place. Everyone needs to go and order the pizza on Wednesdays
google avatar

Naidey L.

Yelp
I went here on Sunday and Destiny was my server. She was bartending and serving at the same time. She was quick and efficient, and very knowledgeable about the menu. I can see myself coming here again because the service was so amazing. She was very attentive to everyone she was serving and it was an overall great experience. Amazing food and service :)
google avatar

Yelp
Went late at night after a 5 hour flight and was starving because it was 11pm where we came from! Food was fast and delicious and portions were huge. Got a Cesar salad to share between 2 of us and our own pizzas. Too much food but I enjoyed the leftovers the next day! Sauce on margarita pizza was delicious!
google avatar

Trinity F.

Yelp
Great food the pizzas are awesome but they have way more to offer. Definitely recommend the fish tacos and the steak appetizer was to die for. The burgers and salads are good too. The bar has lots of great specialty drinks to offer. Chef Joel always has yummy specials so be sure to ask
google avatar

Rich P.

Yelp
This place has always been able to accommodate our group. We're a family of 5, so when we arrive with friends its always a party of 10+. They have booth seating as well as an outdoor patio- perfect for kids. They also have coloring pages and crayons for the kiddos. The prosciutto and arugula pizza and beers hit the spot!

R N.

Yelp
Mushroom Pizza: Fish Tacos: Huge Caesar's Salad: Solid brick oven pizza. Group of four went with our server's recommendation: fish tacos, only served at lunch, and her favorite pizza was mushroom. We were not disappointed. No waiting on our food...no waiting on our water refills... no waiting on our drinks. Ate outdoors, shaded, nice breeze, no complaints. Walked away happy - and with leftovers.

Heather N.

Yelp
Awful. Stood outside for 20 minutes waiting for them to open. The specials are listed for Dec 23, per their website they are open today. Awful when you tell your hungry and thirsty kids we are going out for pizza and they randomly aren't open but the lights are on.
google avatar

Yelp
Food: 7/10 Service: 9/10 Ambiance: 8/10 Came here on xmas-eve-eve, had a drink and a small dinner to share. We got the caesar salad, tuna steak burger and fries. Fries were really delicious, double fried crispness and salted perfectly. Flaky outside and soft/starchy inside just as I like it. Tune steak was a bit over salted and over cooked for my taste. Drinks were strong and good. Caesar salad was huge and great for sharing.
google avatar

Reagan S.

Yelp
Food: got the margherita pizza with pepperoni. The sauce is really tasty, good consistency and flavor. The crust is good too you get the charred bubbles, not a ton of flavor. Toppings all tasted good. Pizza size is a bit on the smaller side, not enough to fill up two people(my boyfriend stopped at Wendy's after because he wasn't full). Ambiance: nice patio for warmer months, good amount of seating inside Service: good service, friendly staff Overall experience: fun place to get pizza and then walk around the neighborhood/beach
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
This $20 fried chicken sandwich would have been absolutely delicious, but they served it on a bun that was burnt to a crisp.
google avatar

Nah ..

Yelp
The pizza is average - better than Mr. Moto's but that's not saying much. San Diego has way too many pizza and burger joints and doesn't need another average one tbh. The bigger problem is the biting insects that feast on you while you're trying to have dinner. My whole family got bit up - not sure by what - fleas or mosquitoes. I got bit 8 times, my kid and husband each have 4 bites. We mentioned it to the waitress but she didn't seem to be too concerned. It's been the first time we've been bitten eating out in San Diego for over a year now. Hope they can get rid of those biting insects. The restaurant allows dogs inside despite a sign saying no pets so I wouldn't be surprised if there were fleas.
google avatar

Eric G.

Yelp
My experience there could not have gone better. I was there on a sunday afternoon hoping to watch the Padres beat the Dodgers. Cool spot, great service and good beer. The pizza was probably the best I have had in San Diego. It was perfectly cooked. They have the a stone pizza oven heated with wood and it makes a huge difference. The crust was about as perfect as it can be. They also don't mess around with the ingredients, all top notch. I live in North County and I will definitely be back. I which they opened one here.

Yelp
Excellent drinks, delicious pizza!! Highly recommend!! Bartender, Bradon, super nice guy!

Yelp
The food is delicious! The service is fantastic!!!!! The ambience very, very good!!!!

Yelp
What's more bitter than beer? Their pizza! It was burnt. Been wanting to try this place for a while and sad to say I don't think I will be in a hurry to come back. Complementary water was lukewarm (can't really complain since it's free) Their Chicken Wings with house-made Calabrian chile buffalo sauce was too chewy and fatty. The Spinach & Strawberry Salad sounds refreshing. But it lacks flavor, I think they forgot to put the honey vinaigrette we didn't taste any dressing at all! Other than that, the atmosphere is nice and the servers are friendly, but the food needs improvement.
google avatar

Alice A.

Yelp
For $21 the beet salad that was delivered to my house was criminally tiny. My husband ordered pizza, which I didn't want to eat, hence the salad. The "salad" is more like an amuse bouche. Aka - smaller than an appetizer. The pizza is ok, no better than Woodstock. We should have ordered from Catania.
google avatar

Meagan E.

Yelp
The Good: New menu. New version of the classic is absolutely delicious. Pep, bacon, caramelized onion, bomb meatball bits (i dont even like meatballs). The Bad: Its Jan 2021, COVID surging better than ever, and they are NOT following guidelines as the place was PACKED, far beyond the limited capacity currently ordered. The Ugly: SEVERAL servers going from table to table with NO MASKS. If we hadnt paid in advance of our pick up I guarantee we would have ordered elsewhere. Completely unacceptable. So dangerously irresponsible I have to take 5 star food off my list of options.
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
I've been twice and both experiences have been great- it's such a cute place. The beet salad was delicious. I also tried the cauliflower pizza, which is some of the best I've had. Another time I had a burger, which was yummy. I sat at the bar both times, and both bartenders were very friendly. I'd like to go back for live music.

Mika

Yelp
Destiny is the absolute best! We went there for trivia last week, and she made the whole vibe (great beer recommendations too!!). Would recommend trivia on wednesdays there, and definitely recommend it if she's your server!!!

Yelp
This pizza is still amazing, came here about 2 years ago and loved it. got the vegan pizza...amazing!!! nowwww lets get down to covid business! first let me say we paid for our food in advance for pick-up, as we have been doing since the pandemic started. When we pulled up the patio was im sure OVER capacity, i go inside to pick up my food and it looks like a damn mad house, im thinking to myself what in the hell??? then i see two men with no mask ...its not until maybe 2 mins later i see them going to tables talking to customers and the hostess and im thinking to myself "i know they don't work here" WALKING AROUND WITH NO MASK!! that made my blood boil so bad being that we already paid for our food. if we just went out there and ordered on the spot and i seen that, i would of took my money elsewhere!!.To A restaurant that takes the pandemic serious! I wont be going back! wheat and water is just out of control. DO BETTER

Yelp
Wheat & Water caught my attention when I looked at restaurants that were near the place we'd be staying in La Jolla. For one thing, the name reminded me of San Francisco's Flour+Water (which has now morphed into the Flour+Water Hospitality Group :-) ). For another, it had excellent reviews and sported an attractive menu. I reserved for the first night of our stay. We liked the place so much that we came back two nights later for the last of our three nights in LJ. What was good about Wheat & Water? First of all, we liked the friendly enthusiasm of all of the personnel. The place looked good and felt good. It had plenty of TV screens for sports watching. Our outdoor table (first visit) put us in a good mood, and our indoor table (second visit) put us in a prime position to watch hoops. Secondly, the beers were wonderful! I l really loved the sour beer (Lost Abbey Tiny Bubbles Orange Guava Brut Ale) and the hazy IPA (Glass Embolden Hidden Paradise). The white wines were A-OK as well. Finally, the food was great! We had the brussels sprouts appetizer both times, and I can speak highly of three salads (black garlic caesar, butter lemon wedge, and the chopped), as well as the burger. Overall, this place is a real winner. I wish that they'd open up a second location in NorCal.

Hannah C.

Yelp
Wheat and water is amazing! Came here on our vacation and made friends with their awesome bartender Damon! He makes great cocktails and the food is delicious. We love the Brussels sprouts and the Miami's Finest cocktail they just added to the menu is so good. 100% would recommend.
google avatar

Chloe C.

Yelp
Update: still great for Happy Hour. We liked the HH fries but weren't as excited about the slider or taco. I felt like the fried were a better deal and the pork was a little dry in the slider and taco. As for pizzas, we love the gabagol. I also really liked the baked potato pizza if you're feeling a little more adventurous.

Yelp
Great pizza, really enjoyed it as we took out for a group. Didn't eat inside but looked like a good vibe inside. Nice staff.
