D.C. Oktoberfest Parties Tapping Local and German Beers | Eater DC

"At the 30-acre Loudoun County farm and production facility — prized by local brewers for a “land beer” approach that uses Virginia grains, well water, and native yeasts — the third annual Oktoberfest will tap four beers: Oider Ursprung (made with 65% Bavarian grain), a malty Ursprung Festbier, a rich and dry Bauernhof Alt blended with chocolate wheat, and the Corn Crib Farmhouse Ale; the event also includes bratwurst, traditional music and games, German-garb and stein-holding competitions, a $24 ticket that includes a commemorative half-liter stein, and a family day on Sunday when kids get in free." - Gabe Hiatt

A few Saturday's back my wife and I visited this beautiful little farm brewery on our way down to the Washington DC suburbs. It's a delightful spot with a little bit of everything including a Saturday morning farmers market. The setting is rustic, and totally appropriate. The staff was very friendly and helpful with suggestions regarding both food and drinks. Both the lunch and craft brews were awesome. Definitely a place worth h checking out.

Google
My favorite brewery ever. Of all time. I’m so particular with the beers I drink and I’ve enjoyed every single one I’ve tried from Wheatland. It’s family-run and I always have the best time every time we go. Their farmer’s market has amazing vendors and more curated, so it’s not too overwhelming for me. They have an amazing playground for kids too. If you’re in the area, go!! Quickly!!

Joe A.

Google
Great selection of beer! You can also remote working there! They also have food and outdoor heating/fire pits

Scott W.

Google
Nice selection of beers, highly recommend the IPAs. The locale and scenery steals the show here, beautiful farmland in a scenic setting, peaceful and quiet. Lots of benches and covered seating, and plenty of indoor seating, both in a renovated barn and indoors air-conditioning. Food trucks are also available, and they are kid and dog friendly. Highly recommended.

Google
Absolutely love this place. The staff is very friendly.Their field side IPA is fantastic. The place is beautiful. Great outdoor area. They also have a beautiful barn seating with wonderful dim lighting inside. Being a working farm, you can actually see where they grow the wheat and barley that you are drinking. They have a board with the homegrown ingredients percentages that make up your beer, the field side for example reads 100%. They have a decent food selection in addition to whatever food truck might be there. Absolutely recommended.

Google
Came here with the family after trying a beer in the 3rd anniversary box from High Side in Fairfax. So glad we came, this place was awesome! The grounds are gorgeous (and historic) and we'll set for social distancing while still having ample seating. The option to order at the window or via QR code was appreciated, especially these days. We ordered food and beer and I've got nothing but good words about both. The food was delicious, the only downside being the limited quantities so order sooner than later or it might run out. As for the beer, the word that comes to mind is; clean. The beer just tasted fresh and clean. Nothing too fancy, nothing overwhelming, just crisp and well done. And it certainly doesn't hurt that they provide the origins of all of their beers. One of the best breweries we've discovered in a while. We'll be back for sure!

Google
Perfect place to go, especially on a fall day! The fields of sunflowers provide a beautiful backdrop for photos. The beer & food can be enjoyed either at picnic tables or around a fire pit. Bring your dog, your kids, your whole family! Enjoy!

Google
My husband and I celebrated our 18 year anniversary here and Wheatland made it extremely special for us. We originally reserved adirondack chairs around the fire pit, however with the wind gusts we decided to opt for an igloo in which Wheatland's team was more than accommodating. Upon arrival we saw that they went the extra mile by lighting candles and placed a very cute sign with our names on it. The igloo was extremely warm; warmer than other igloos that we have been in that actually had heaters in them. The grounds were clean and even better....so were the bathrooms. Taylor was was an added bonus to our day as she was super cheerful and always had a smile! The sandwiches were yummy and you could taste how fresh their brews were, definitely worth the hour drive. We can't wait to return during the warmer months.

Yelp
Finally got to try Wheatland Spring and was glad we did! It's very family and dog friendly, with lots of grass areas and a nice playground. There is food too with a pizza truck parked on site, and a long beer and cider list. Staff was fantastic and helpful. If you are looking for a place to enjoy Loudouns beers and ciders with the family in tow, Wheatland, Harvest Gap and Vanish are all great options- or go to all three!

Jeffrey A.

Yelp
Excellent heritage beers!! Loved Tabula Rasa. Had good sandwiches, blue grass music and fantastic atmosphere. Really worth the trip.

Yelp
Updating my review. We continue to be impressed by Wheatland Spring. They have a great family vibe and wonderful outdoor views. The beers are elevated in quality. This is because Wheatland Spring is an estate brewery, meaning their 30-acre farm is dedicated to growing ingredients for the beer, including malting barley and other grains bred specifically for brewing. Beer list is available here https://www.wheatlandspring.com/beer The stand outs are: 1. Hope Grows: a pine and citrus forward but balanced IPA at 6.4% ABV. Proceeds support research at Virginia Tech testing hundreds of new barley types bred specifically for the Mid-Atlantic growing region, see more here https://www.wheatlandspring.com/hope-grows 2. Long Shadow - an amazing chocolate stout that pairs well with red meat and is very drinkable on its own. It's the best craft brew stout in the NoVA region. Because of the high quality and lower production yield, prices are a bit high compared to other local breweries. We think it is worth it. Food wise they have a rotating with sandwiches including a Cubano, caprese and a grilled cheese. Often there are food trucks there on weekends. Reservations are not required, but are available to Fork + Rake Members. From May to October on each Saturday from 11:00am - 1:00pm they have a wonderful farmers market that's worth checking out.

Yelp
Very cute brewery and farm with a small, scratch kitchen and very interesting brews. I'd been wanting to stop by forever and finally got the chance while visiting my parents. It's a working farm so there are tractors running all over, staff doing multiple jobs, and the whole place feels alive. We got their pretzel which is a more Bavarian style and comes with a really nice, sharp mustard. You can get Nutella but that's blasphemy, in my opinion. Their beer was excellent, too. The stout has a really roasted chocolate flavor. The smoke doesn't overwhelm the nuttiness but compliments it. Their estate lager Pilsner was also excellent with way more body than you'd select from such a light beer. Really good head on it and was perfect for a sunny day. If I'm in the area again I'll be stopping by, for sure. I'd like to try their sandwiches since they farm the ingredients right next door!
google avatar

Teresa L.

Yelp
Love this tucked away, dog friendly brewery! There's a handful of outdoor seating options and I could see this place filling up quickly in the summer months so keep that in mind. The wine was refreshing and the pretzel hit the spot! Their pretzel cheese dip and mustard are must try's as well.

Yelp
Wheatland Sprig Farm/Brewery is a modest farm in Waterford VA, A few buildings including a barn does not immediately strike you as a must visit. But visit you must. There is a barn which can be rented and a few buildings for cooler weather, but the majority of the area contains a lot of large tables suitable for groups. Its a great place to come with friends and enjoy the location as well as their refined beer selection. Parking is easy with no hills or long bumpy roads to access. They have a truly impressive selection of craft beers brewed with love and care. When we were there, they had at least 12 beers available. A visit to their website reveals the place is really a farm which uses the wheat in their beer. The brewers here are clearly passionate about their work, including as many local ingredients as possible and experimenting in techniques to provide a varied selection of unique and tasty beers. The cans actually show the percentage of local vs from farther afield. I had their Alt Beer which is dark, malty and satisfying, think brown ale or porter with a bit more sophistication. It was on tap but also in cans. My wife had the Westerly ale which is open fermented and was a farmhouse style ale with a nod in the direction of hefeweizen. The brewer I spoke to, Austin knew his stuff and was eager to provide samples and answer questions. I also had a bottle of Eyeglass (later) which was a decent farmhouse style ale. Food selection is modest, but does include sandwiches which is better than some places. I loved the location, the selection and the general, for want of a better word, "farminess" of the place. Very kid friendly and dog friendly. Not spoiled and worth a visit. We are heading back there as soon as possible.

Yelp
We had the best time at this brewery . The bear was top notch. There was great indoor and outdoor seating along with a park for the kids . We also enjoyed the food! Highly recommended.

Yelp
I don't have enough praise to to adequately describe how good this place is. Coming from San Diego as a craft beer snob, the beer here was so good that we used to trade for it. Now Im happy that it's close to where I live! I love that they specialize in a bunch of European styles of beer, which is something that has been largely left out of the craft beer world. If you get an estate beer, the grain for the beer was produced on the farm/brewery grounds, which is an awesome (and delicious) concept. The beer is great, but the environment is even better. Family friendly, this is a place that my kids look forward to going. Beautiful location too. Staff is next level friendly, and so are the owners. I never regret coming here. I also love that they do a lot of community type events, (farmers market, final fridays ect.) and support other small businesses in the area.

Yelp
Had a great Saturday afternoon at Wheatland. Reservations were easy to make online, and they let you book two 2-hr slots for a longer stay. We originally had an igloo but it was so nice outside in the sun that they let us switch to a large picnic table which fit 6 easily (8 in a pinch!). 4 star rating because it was a little expensive but the beer selection was extensive. We enjoyed the Bauernhof Altbier, Haidhausen Dunkel, River + Flood DIPA, Köln Kölsch (husbands fave!), East Crib (my fave!!), and Farm Chores. No food truck today, but their pressed sandwiches were excellent - grilled cheese, turkey, rubens, and Cubans. COVID socially distancing and cleanliness excellent as well! They are cashless, so you order from the table and the beers and food are brought out quickly.

Yelp
Quaint snd quiet setting on a Sunday midday. The brewery has plenty of tables with umbrellas at each along with a shaded area with more seating, including a circle of Adirondack chairs. Usually when you go to a brewery or vineyard and it says "no outside food allowed", you get sad or disappointed that you can't bring your own picnic. That's not the case here! They have freshly prepared foods (not from food trucks) they actually make it onsite! We tried the Pulled Pork Sandwich (with Texas BBQ sauce) along with the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. They were both so tasty! We also subbed mac and cheese for both sides and it was worth it! We tried a stout and the Du Champ and liked both. Tips: - If you are thinking about bringing a jacket, bring it! It does get quite breezy on the small hill they are located on. - When you're arriving on their street, be sure to look out for their sign. GPS wants to take you to a private residence but the entry to the brewery is just past that. - They are family friendly. - There is a sunflower field across the street which makes for some beautiful views (not sure if it is on their property).

Yelp
Wheatland Spring does everything right, from their amazing and distinctive "land beers" (easily some of the best in the DMV) to their beautiful farm space with plenty of room for COVID precautions to be implemented perfectly. The beers are incredible across all styles, and while they make hoppy IPAs, their focus is on pilsners, lagers, classic German styles (dunkels, altbier) and wild ales, in line with Jester King and Fonta Flora. Their staff are incredibly friendly and can easily recommend something whether you're a beer geek/brewer who wants to geek out on an open fermented brettanomyces beer with local grains(the Du Champ, fwiw) or just want to enjoy a great beverage. The food here - mostly sandwiches and chips - is also really solid, with an amazing Cuban sandwich and one of our favorite vegetarian options, the Caprese, which has both basil and pesto for bonus deliciousness. All of this plus this beautiful gorgeous space to relax at? It's a no-brainer. Kid friendly, pet friendly, too. I'd recommend a reservation, especially on a Saturday, and you'll get two hours outside or in one of their beautiful barns. We're an hour away but we're here all the time because it's just such a wonderful combination of kind people making great beer and food in a relaxing place.

Yelp
Doesn't get much sweeter than this...even the honey bees approve!! Lovely IPA. Honey bee on a pint glass.

Yelp
4/5, November 2021. We stopped here on the recommendation of a friend. They had good food options that were tasty if slightly pricy. The beer was good and they had several very competitive styles. They had a few different "indoor" seating locations in addition to plentiful outdoor seating. While it was a ways from more built up locations it wasn't too far and definitely worth the drive. We'll certainly be stopping back again soon.

Yelp
This is such a cute brewery. My bf and I came here when it just opened at 11am this past Sunday. They have plenty outdoor seating, and a barn for indoor seating. Ordered a flight, all were good but the porter fell a little flat for me. Tasted more like a brown ale. Loved the lager and altbier!! I am not sure due to COVID everything is just a bit more expensive now, but a flight is around $16 which is just a bit pricey. The farm itself is huge and the brewery is just a small part of it. They have rotating food trucks, and the taco food truck is on point. (unfortunately I don't remember the name!) I want to come back and venture out to see horses (not sure if that's allowed though) and maybe stay at the little Airbnb on their website. Lol.

Yelp
I waited a year to see if the beer got better. Nope. Beer is still very expensive compared to others. This beer is on the bottom tear of loudoun's breweries. Go anywhere else.

Yelp
I discovered the existence of Wheatland Spring Farm + Brewery during a recent trip which took me through Waterford, VA - I noted the sign for the brewery as I drove by - and made a note to look into it online when I got home. My group of friends is still practicing social distancing during the COVID-10 Pandemic - so we still do not go out to places like we used to. So I went online, ordered some of their beer - and specified "curbside pickup." I drove out on a Saturday morning, pulled my truck into the area for curbside pickup - a young lady came out to ask my name (she was wearing a facemask - I pulled mine on before opening the window). She got my name, retrieved my beer order - and placed it in the back seat - and I was on my way! I ordered the only beers available at the time in cans: Fieldrise IPA (4.5 stars on Untapd) Weizenland (4 stars on Untappd) I dropped off some of the beer at two of my friends house - a their front door. I was very surprised at how good the Weizenland was. I am not a fan in general - of the "Hefeweizen" style. However, this one was really good! I can see ordering a pint of this. I love a good hoppy pale ale or IPA - and the Fieldrise IPA was outstanding! I look forward to a time - Post COVID-19 Pandemic - when we will come out as a group - and visit Wheatland Spring Farm + Brewery - in person - to stay and taste all the ales! #WheatlandSpringFarmPlusBrewery

Yelp
Beers were solid and the atmosphere was relaxing. Staff was also super polite and helpful explaining all the types of beers. During covid, I would highly recommend reserving a table in advance if you don't want to sit on the grass.

Yelp
I'm probably going to average 1 5-star review update per year for Wheatland Spring Brewery. We had our wedding reception at Wheatland this spring and I couldn't have asked for a better place for it. The barn was a perfect spot for our 15 guests to enjoy a sit down dinner. Coordinating with Wheatland was laid back, easy, and that made it stress-free (unheard of for wedding planning, right?!). Their new events manager was an absolute dream to work with. The brewery itself is, of course, amazing (the beer is simply excellent and the location and surrounding scenery is magical), but it is the people who staff and run the brewery that make it the best one around. Just cannot say enough good things about this place so do yourself a favor and experience it first hand!

Yelp
After finding Wheatland Spring Farm and Brewery on Yelp this quickly became my favorite Brewery. I got the DuChamp both times that I've been here and it's great because it has light flavor which I look for and it pairs well with the food they have to offer as well. I have tried both the barbecue chicken and the pulled pork sandwich. Both were great but my favorite by far is the Pulled Pork Sandwich. In addition the Mac and cheese was delicious as well and goes well with the Pulled Pork. They have a pretty large outdoor seating area which is where we spent our time both trips that we have taken here. I would highly recommend for anyone looking for delicious food and good beer.

Kiya D.

Yelp
We came for an awesome deal on brat & beer! $7 for a brat and a drink. Five min wait for our food, completely open & comfortable seating! Pretty decent servings and the brat tasted great! The garden is really pretty to look at while you're eating as well! Plus a lot of open space to just walk around with your dogs!

Yelp
This farm and brewery is so amazing! I made reservations online, very easily and when we got to the brewery, they reserved the barn for us! OMG! It was so cute and warm and farmy. We had a such a great time at this place. The beer was really really good! The food they had was also very delicious and the staff was really kind, welcoming, and really helpful! I will definitely be back to this farm and brewery!

Yelp
This place is a super cute getaway from the city. Location wise is super easy to get to. Beer wise, they've got plenty of options and on the weekend we went, we got super lucky! Not only was there an amazing Puerto Rican food truck with yummy sandwiches and empanadas but the sun flower field looked beautiful! I loved the place so much that we decided to go AGAIN the next weekend. Unfortunately our experience wasn't the same due to #1 the flowers being gone! And #2 our sandwich order took over an hour. This time the food order was placed with Wheatland themselves so I understand they got super busy but will definitely be back next year!

Steve S.

Yelp
A bit of a bummer. $9 ok beers and 40 min wait for a cheese sandwich. Save your time and money.

Yelp
Great customer service, good beers, and good buffalo chicken paninis. What more could you ask for. Can't wait to come back.

Yelp
Fun and cute outdoor barn brewery! We were on vacation visiting family, and they drove us out here, and we were not disappointed! It's around 39 minutes from Dulles airport in the Virginia rolling farm area. This brewery is on 30 acres of land, dated from circa 1852 and they have around 8-9 beers on tap that they brew. $8 for a 16 oz and a flight of four 4oz for $16. Great service, they usually have 1 or 2 burgers on the menu, I had the special gazpacho for only $7, and they grow all their vegetables and herbs, and smoke and grill on the premises. Plenty of seating from bench tables to an open barn with table seating to a bar like high seating next to the beer making. Clean restrooms in the back, and live music on Sundays from 2-5pm. They close at 6pm. Pet friendly, plenty of parking, and a great place for a fun day for 2 or a large group of family or friends. There are around 38 brewerys in the North Virginia area, and they have a map of all of them, and stamp them after your visit. Definitely worth driving out there.

Colin M.

Yelp
Food is good, as well as very inexpensive for the area; I ordered a delicious roast beef panini melt and it only cost me $9.
google avatar

Tyler E.

Yelp
let me just start by saying that this place was absolutely gorgeous. Besides being in a beautiful barn with loft seating, they had some really great beer. And really sweet staff too! they were kind and gave us a little bit of the background and checked on us a couple of times throughout our stay.. not only that but, we got stuck in the mud in the parking area and they helped push us out without anything but laughs and friendliness. our bad for misjudging how wet the ground was, but they had mapped out clearly dry areas and we did not pick one lol. Seriously an all around great place, will definitely be returning, and owe the guys there one!

Yelp
We went to Wheatland Spring for their Oktoberfest and had an amazing time. The beers are phenomenal and the space is great. Lots of spaced out cheers and tables. We can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Amazing beer, wonderful service and views that are just fantastic! Love this place and look forward to our next visit. Bonus- Iron Maiden (on the stereo system not live of course) was playing on the way out.

Colleen M.

Yelp
Stopped in around 1pm on Friday, first time here and really enjoyed the the beer & Cuban sandwich will have to come back when it's warmer

Yelp
We went to Wheatland Spring Farm for their first annual Oktoberfest. It was fun. We went Saturday afternoon because we wanted to check it out before it got super busy. It was soooo sooo hot that day! They had a beer tent set up and they also had seating in their barn. They had traditional Oktoberfest food for purchase (although the pretzels were cold!) as well as a marzen style lager. The beer was good. It was really good. We purchased their mugs to take home because they were so cute. I def want to go back to try some of their other beers. There were quite a few people there and it was getting busier as we left. The price point of the beers was great. Make sure you stop in. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Newly opened brewery in western Loudoun. Beer is brewed with their own wheat and artisanal water. I filled up a growler to go of their NEIPA and was not disappointed.

Yelp
This has recently become one of my favorite spots to visit with my wife/friends. The staff is great and seem to be doing a great job following COVID protocols (reserving seats ahead of time, placing your orders on stumps a short distance from the table, QR code ordering, etc). I have really enjoyed the sours and farmhouse saisons I have had there. The sunflowers were in full bloom the second time we visited and my wife was able to pick a handful of stems for a reasonable price. This is a great spot especially now since it is fully outdoors, has an adequate amount of seating, and gives off less of a party/free for all vibe that some of the larger outdoor breweries in Loudon County give off.

Alex T.

Yelp
Updating to include an in person visit finally! My Fiancée and I came here for a socially distant Oktoberfest yesterday and it was an amazing event. You can tell that they worked hard to make this a fun and safe event. The beers continue to be outstanding, the sunflower fields are beautiful, and everyone who works there is above and beyond friendly!
google avatar

Rikki H.

Yelp
We had no idea this was a new brewery when we chose to visit. We spent a lot of time talking with the owner and his pride in his craft is evident. If you're in the area and like beer, make sure you stop. You won't be disappointed. My husband and I chose to split two flights so we could try a little bit of everything and went home with two different bomber bottles full of deliciousness. So glad we stopped and can't wait until we're in the area to visit again!

Matt ..

Yelp
The best farm brewery in Va. Delicious beers/so many diff styles done well, great vibe/comfortable environment and always a fun/informative/enjoyable experience connecting with awesome beertenders. Just come as you are, and drink fresh beer with character. And history, as well as passion, that goes into it. You won't be disappointed. They've got a beer for everyone. And if you're not sure, they'll help you figure it out. We're lucky to have them. Always a great time.

Mike F.

Yelp
What a great location! Beer was very good and they had non-alcoholic drinks for kids (and popsicles). Even though tables are out in an open grassy area the awnings they have installed ensure much needed shade. I would have given them 5 stars however the current separate order and delivery window does not allow for the staff to keep up when busy and beers are slow to come out. A very minor critique because staff was very friendly despite being very busy.

carolyn R.

Lovely spot, solid beer. Very fr

Yelp
This is truly a unique place. The setting is beautiful and laid back. There are several places to sit and enjoy the view. The beer was awesome and the staff was super friendly.

Yelp
We love going out to this brewery! It's quite a haul for us but worth the drive. The brewery is new, clean, and so charming, with friendly service, delicious food, and incredibly good beer. You'll love the taste, but once you learn it's made with wheat they actually grew on their land and crops from the farm across the road, you'll feel the love too. It's beer made with heart. Can't wait to go back.
