Proper English: Exquisite English Country Hotels

"England’s coaching inns are the ancestors of today’s pubs, and the Wheatsheaf is as true as can be to the classic, slightly utopian ideal of a public house as a welcoming place for a drink, a delicious bite to eat, and an attractive, comfortable room for the night (plus decidedly non-pub amenities like a spa in the garden and shooting or fishing outings)." - The MICHELIN Guide

Wonderful stay at the Wheatsheaf. Beautiful cosy rooms and hotel is in a lovely setting. Breakfast was delicious. Nothing too fussy but fresh and tasty produce. Dinner the night before (the beef roast) wasn’t the best however could be due to ordering later in the day. The staff dealt with my concerns very well though. Lovely touches throughout our stay which were very much appreciated. Will definitely look to return!

Lovely location, convenient for places like Bourton, Stow & Moreton, but in a nice quiet little town with it's own little shops & a nice wine bar (if you're not into the well kept Youngs beer at The Wheatsheef). Our room was an "outside" room but convenient for the bar & restaurant. Well appointed & clean. The only thing we weren't sure about was that it had no shower, but the bath was a nice change.|Food in the restaurant was first class, including the Sunday roast, which was the best we've had for years & breakfast was great. The beer was great too. A nice garden & outside space to meet friends for a drink & eats.|Parking was a bit of a challenge sometimes, with a small car park, but there was usually parking in the big street outside.|Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay & would have no hesitation in recommending The Wheatsheef to anyone.

First time in Northleach, a very small and quiet village. Staff were very welcoming and we had a lovely room. We dined there more than once as the food was excellent along with the service. Almost an old-fashioned and welcome approach, with plentiful mini bar and snacks in a beautiful room with a very comfortable king bed and soft pillows. |A special touch was a small bottle of fresh milk left every day for teas and coffees. I would highly recommend this hotel and I left wishing I could have stayed longer.

Where do I even start?|I booked to stay at the Wheatsheaf Inn with my boyfriend for 3 nights with no real high expectations of the hotel or area. When we arrived, it looked like any old pub, but let me tell you, looks can be very deceiving!||The pub/hotel is absolutely beautiful inside, full of character and charm with that traditional Cotswolds Stone throughout. When we were shown to our room, which was outside on the ground floor, it was absolutely perfect. The room was beautiful — warm, stylish, and cosy, with a lovely freestanding bath that added a luxurious touch (although admittedly a little tricky to navigate when you’re not used to that style!).||The staff were amazing from start to finish — so friendly, welcoming and attentive. A special shoutout to Duncan, who was incredibly helpful throughout our stay and made everything feel so easy and relaxed.||We had dinner in the Garden Room every night, and the food was absolutely fantastic. Every dish we tried was delicious, beautifully presented, and the service was consistently excellent. The overall location is also great — peaceful, scenic, and a perfect base for exploring the surrounding Cotswolds villages.||We left feeling relaxed, well looked after, and already talking about when we’ll come back. Highly recommend!||We had one issue with the blinds not fully covering the one of the windows in our room, and rang reception and within 5 minutes the issue was sorted.||Would absolutely stay here again, thank you so much to the team for making us feel welcome and giving us the relaxing stay we desperately needed!

We had a lovely stay at the Wheatsheaf! Rooms were super cosy and beautifully furnished. Also enjoyed a relaxing bubble bath. Food for dinner and breakfast was very good! Short drive to Bibury with beautiful country walks. Overall a lovely country stay. Would come again.

Visited for a business meeting and team stay over. From day one of booking, all the team have been incredibly helpful. Duncan and Harriet looked after us on the day and couldn’t have done more to make us feel to welcome. The service was impeccable. The rooms were immaculate with some very thoughtful small touches. I would highly recommend.

We stayed for 2 nights in December and thought it was a really good hotel/pub/restaurant and would stay again.|The food was to a high standard and we had two really good evening meals there. We also like the small sitting room to have coffee in afterwards.|The only issue was that the room we were originally allocated had a freestanding bath within the bedroom. There was however no shower cubicle just the shower head spray attached to the bath taps so it was not really possible to have a shower. Due to mobility issues (I cannot get into a bath) we needed a walk in shower so we had to change rooms. Our fault really as we did not specify on the booking. However my husband said that while he does not have mobility issues he wanted a proper shower and does not like baths in the bedroom area. Surely it must make the room wet and full of condensation. Also slightly strange was that the two sinks were also in the room. Only the toilet was private. This may be personal preference but when booking just check the bathroom set up of your room. We prefer our bathroom separate from the bedroom.

Had a great stay here. The rooms are spacious but still feel cozy, with nice little touches like a Dyson hairdryer and a proper coffee machine. The tub was a great addition, though there’s a shower too if you prefer. Everything was spotless, and the staff were brilliant—Steven and Harriet especially made us feel really welcome. We ate at the restaurant, and the food was excellent—definitely worth a visit. Parking at the hotel is limited, but there’s loads of street parking right out front, so it’s not an issue. It’s also only a 10-minute drive from Bourton-on-the-Water—not why we stayed, but good to know. Highly recommend and will definitely be back!
