The Wheatsheaf has been the worst type of dive pub for years. Decades, even. We can all agree that slumming it is fun, but this place was just sad.
Until recently, that is. Last month the property was taken over by the Antic group of pubs, familiar to Tooting residents from their excellent Antelope and Tram & Whistle pubs.
The Wheatsheaf is definitely a work in progress, but charmingly so. It sticks to the shabby-chic ethos of the other Antic properties, but since the transformation is not yet complete it occupies a place between hipster hangout and tetanus petri dish.
The best features, in no order, are the truly dingy furnishings, the decent real ales, and the crusty locals who haven't yet noticed that they're no longer the target demographic. This will change as soon as the kitchen is operational (late December), so soak it in while you can.
Just make sure you don't touch the toilet seat.
