Wheelcake Island Review - Shepherd's Bush - London - The Infatuation

"An island made out of a fluffy Taiwanese pancake is exactly where we’d rather be 95% of the time. Especially if it’s as good as the wheel cakes that can be found at this stall in Westfield. They’re a cross between a pancake and a bready cake, are made fresh daily, and filled with things like vanilla custard, chocolate, matcha, and oreo. The cakey outer layer is light and slightly salted, and complements the sweetness of whichever creamy filling you choose. You can go classic with the vanilla custard, but we love the chocolate vanilla and oreo flavours. They also have some limited edition seasonal options with things like biscoff or sweet pumpkin which are always excellent. photo credit: Giulia Verdinelli" - Rianne Shlebak

Perfect place to grab a quick, sweet pick-me-up. A single custard pancake is £3.50, with options of vanilla chocolate or matcha! This stall is placed right in the center of Old Spiralfields Market among the other small food stalls. A little heavy on the vanilla flavouring, but it was just the right amount of filling! Worth a visit and the staff are super friendly!

Lovely cute bites, I tried 3 flavours: Azuki Bean, Matcha and the Chocolate & Vanilla wheelcakes, all were well-filled (so be gentle when biting in otherwise the filling can squirt out), the fillings were nice and creamy and thick. They were all good but I personally liked the Chocolate & Vanilla one best. I'm curious to try the other flavours available.

FLUFFY CAKES FROM TAIWAN 🇹🇼✨ 📍 Old Spitalfields Market, London ⭐️ 5/5 💸 £ 🍴 If you’re wandering through Old Spitalfields Market and spot a cute stand with a line, you’ve probably just found @wheelcakeisland 👀 These pillowy Taiwanese-style pancakes are the ultimate sweet street food treat. Think fluffy, cloud-like cakes with molten fillings that melt in your mouth 💭🍰 I went for the chocolate one and WOW! Warm, gooey, rich and totally addictive 🍫 I was so tempted to try the classic red bean too, and next time I’m 100% going for the matcha as well 🍵 These little pockets of happiness are freshly made right in front of you, which makes the experience even better. Super affordable, super cute, and perfect for a sweet bite between market strolls. Definitely save this one for your next foodie adventure! 💜

These wheelcakes are a yummy and not overwhelmingly sweet treat. They are slightly crisp on the outside and the matcha custard is subtly sweet, not bitter and delicious. I would recommend and would come back to try the other flavours.

Stumbled upon Wheelcake Island during our mini-moon food tour in London and boyyy was I excites when I spotted it!! I love wheelcakes, obanyaki, imagawayaki, whatever you want to call them, I love them. Specially with adzuki(red bean). But I've since tried their custard and special seasonal flavours too like pumpkin!! All great. But red bean remains my favourite. Would recommend the trip, there are a few locations in London but this is the cutest!! I love the frog display so much 💚💖🙏

Was very good, a bit on the not so sweet side. Also had the drinks which was way better than a coffee shop but a little wait. The cakes where amazing we had to try all four. All was so tasty but our favorite was the chocolate one.

While wondering around Spitafield Market, @wheelcakeisland caught my eye with their delicious looking and freshly baked before your eyes Taiwanese filled pancakes 🤤 I couldn't resist and bought 3 of their flavours to try: Adzuki Bean (sweet), Matcha 🍵 and Chocolate (mixed with Vanilla Custard) 🍫 The experience was... a bit underwhelming 😔 The dough was still a bit undercooked and the flavours did not live up to the expectations. I did enjoy the 'chocolate' one, but I don't really consider nutella an actual chocolate flavour 🤷‍♀️ (just my opinion). The matcha one was just ok, as it tasted more of vanilla custard, rather than matcha 🙁 Sadly I found the adzuki beans not to my taste at all, as it was barely sweet and beans were only half way made to paste. It was not good... 😑 I really wish I had a better experience, as I was really excited to try them! I might give them another go if they come out with other flavours to try 😊

Definitely worth a try ✅ if you’ve never had one and true-to-memory if you’re a wheelcake fan. Wheelcakes (車輪餅) are a dessert made from a fluffy pancake-like batter, cooked in cast iron pans, with a creamy filling inside. 🤩 💵Price: £10 for 4 which I’d recommend so you can sample the different custard flavours! ☑️ They’re made freshly, on-site, so the custard filling is hot when you get them. ⏰ Waiting time: Being freshly-made does mean that you may have to wait around 10min for your order depending how busy they are—but it’s well worth it and there’s so much to see at Old Spitalfields Market while you wait. You’ll get a ticket number 🎫 so you can come back and collect your order. Menu: The wheelcakes come in a variety of flavours. Vanilla custard is the golden standard 🤤 but I also tried: the 🍵 matcha, azuki 🫘 bean and chocolate 🍫 (my favourites are in that order too but it’s definitely down to personal flavour preference). Wheelcakes are each marked with a symbol 👀 so you know which one you’re eating (image added for reference). I’ll definitely be back! 🥳

Yelp
Pretty cool that they have the Taiwanese Wheelcake in this food court. They make them at their stand on the griddle, but it doesn't seem they're made to order. I got handed mine real quick; I'd actually be ok if it took a tad longer to make fresh from scratch. Bean: The classic. Nice crispy exterior. Fluffy cake underneath. And a subtle bean paste in the center. Vanilla & Chocolate Custard: A newer take on the wheelcake. Really enjoyed the creaminess. Also, I appreciate that I didn't need to choose flavors and could enjoy both a dollop of vanilla and a dollop of chocolate.

Yelp
I had one of these at Spitalfields Market and it was delightful. (I had the vanilla custard and Biscoff.) I've never had a tasty treat quite like this before - it was very unique, but also very lovely. I highly recommended as a fun snack to enjoy while out on the town :)

Yelp
I had a Matcha Wheel Cake that I really like since the dough was tasty without being too sweet.
