My 7 year old son and I had a great time at the Wheeler Ferris Wheel and accompanying park on a Saturday morning. We were there for a birthday party. There is a covered area with 4 or so picnic tables and a ping pong table. It was nice to have such a large shaded area. I think you have to reserve the tables for parties, but I am not sure about that. The party was early (9 AM) so we were the only ones at the park in the beginning. However, by 10 more people had arrived and by 11 it was humming.
Tip if you do have a party of some kind at the Ferris Wheel: booze is not permitted. We had brought supplies for some early beermosas and were told politely that alcohol was not permitted.
There is plenty to do at the park in addition to the ferris wheel. There are several games for kids, a bunch of hammocks for chilling, and the famous OKC sign for all of your picture taking needs.
There is a small snack bar with bottled drinks and a couple of things to eat. The prices seemed a little high, but not outrageous considering you are at a cool park and not a grocery store. If you want a large meal I would bring food, there's not a ton available. There are also restrooms, although we did not go in them so I cannot opine on the cleanliness.
The ferris wheel is the main attraction, and for good reason. It goes pretty high and you can get a great view of the city in all directions. The entire ride takes between 6 and 7 minutes. It also does not move fast. We had several kids ride it, ages 1-7 years. None of them had issues with the height and all enjoyed it. The compartments are decently comfortable and can seat several people. They are also sturdy, we never felt unsafe throughout many rides.
The pricing is $6 per a single ride ticket, $10 for a day pass, and $20 for a season pass. When my son first rode it, he was a little scared so I did not know if he would want to ride again. So, I only bought the single ride ticket. Of course he loved it and we probably went on it 5 more times. So, after that first ride when it was confirmed he liked it, I went back to the window and asked if I could have the day pass, with the price of my single ticket subtracted. The answer is yes, that was their policy. Clearly I am not the only one who had this issue. Great customer service.
The employees were friendly and I saw them on more than one occasion cleaning various areas of the park. Glad they are maintaining it properly. We will definitely be back, I will want to check out the view at night. This is a great start to what I've read is going to be a significant revitalization of the Wheeler District. OKC needs more places like this, recommended.
