Yelp
This restaurant looks so good on its website and menu, we were
excited to experience my mothers 79th brirthday on Mothers Day. We made a 6:15 reservation for 5. My mom has recently been in the hospital for several months amd she was excited to get out of the house. Mom is a vegetarian and was looking forward to a mushroom pasta dish they advertised. It turned out the pasta was sold out, as well as the steak? This seems bizarre for 6:15pm on a holiday where people enjoy eating out. What is equally surprising is that their only other vegetarian offering is mac and cheese and a side of vegetables. What a disappointment to have no pasta or steak! We had the bread and cheese board, it was very average; and the fried green tomatoes were very good, actually the only item that reached our table still hot. Fried green tomatoes were solid. We waited over an hour for a sandwich, a salad sans steak, fish and chips, and our guest of honor vegetarian had mac and cheese and a side of grilled veggies. It always tells you alot about a place when they make you wait over an hour and then the food comes cold. The manager visited our table and apologized and expressed that we would not be receiving a bill, she was friendly and seemed honestly sorry, she even offered more cocktails and deserts which we declined. We had a cake waiting at home and my mom doesnt stay up really late so we just wanted to be on our way. Of the main dishes, the fish and chips still had some warmth in the plate however everything else was cool. I graciously left a $20 as a tip and we departed. On our way out our server stopped me and said we needed to pay for our drinks, he stated "FL law doesnt allow the comping of drinks", I said "the manager said we would not be receiving a bill?". And he insisted on payment. So i gave him a couple more twenties, knowing full well I was being shaken down. At that point we just wanted to get on with our evening and put Whiskey Cake behind us, so I wasnt going to argue with this obvious scammer. As I was getting my car from the valet I called and let the manager know about her dishonest employee. It seemed like she wanted to offer to do something else, but I declined. My family has been in the restaurant business for years, currently a cousin owns French Laundry, another cousin has The Meat Market, and many others. We are accustomed to fine dining and exemplary service and we expect our hosts to be gracious for our business. I would say Whiskey Cake has done a great job marketing their business, but certainly falls flat in the delivery of good food, good service, and unfortunately they employee at least one person whose behavior is highly unethical and maybe criminal. I would never go back to this restaurant. I feel we would have had better food, better service, and more fun if we had walked 50 more feet and entered the malls food court.
